Childfriend of the Year Recipients Named
of the Year award will be presented to
Amy Spears and the KFC Foundation, Inc.
Amy Spears is known around Home of the
Innocents as a board member, committee
member, letter writer, tour guide and
advocate extraordinaire! We could simply
call her a volunteer, but that wouldn’t come
close to describing all that she does. Instead,
let’s call her a champion for children.
Childfriend of the Year 2010
Amy Spears
Since 1997, Home of the Innocents has taken
time to honor individuals or organizations
in the Louisville community and beyond
who have shown exemplary service to the
protection of, and/or advocacy for, children.
And Each year, it becomes more and more
difficult to choose our Childfriend of the
Year, as there are so many wonderful people
out there making a difference in the lives
of children. There are a like number of
organizations that have made long-term,
concerted efforts to focus on children’s needs.
This year, for the first time, Home of the
Innocents’ Board of Directors has chosen
two Childfriend of the Year recipients! On
Wednesday, June 9, the 2010 Childfriend
Amy began her work with the Home
by invitation of a friend, Karen Harvey,
who was serving on one of the Home’s
committees. Amy was asked to help survey
the kids about their likes and dislikes
regarding our services. She remembers that
one of the kids told her that it was cold at
night. When the committee reported that,
they found out that there was a vent above
the child’s bed – an easy problem to remedy.
That small success, which meant so much,
was enough to win Amy over; almost 30
years later, she is still here helping the kids.
In the early 1990’s, Amy served as
the President of the Home’s Board of
Directors. During her term, she oversaw
the renovation of the Gray Street location,
which necessitated moving all the children
out of the building for a short time. This was
also when she started conducting speaking
engagements on behalf of the Home to
support fundraising efforts, including Metro
United Way. Amy had never done any kind
of public speaking up until this time; today,

Home of the Innocents’ Kosair
Charities Pediatric Convalescent
Center (KCPCC) is Kentucky’s
only center of excellence for
children’s long-term nursing care.
The KCPCC cares for children
from across the region with severe
and profound disabilities requiring
24-hour skilled care. If it were not
for the Home, these children would
grow up in a hospital. The KCPCC
cares for children from birth to age
21, is home to 46 children, and will
soon expand to a capacity of 76.
Kids in the KCPCC currently
participate in aquatherapy
about once a month off-site. The
medically fragile children served
at the Home’s KCPCC benefit
greatly from the liberation and
weightlessness only found in a
specialized therapy pool. The
Kay & Jim Morrissey Advanced
Therapy Center is currently under
construction at our children’s
village to allow for more frequent
aquatherapy.

main initiatives - KFC Feeds Program,
KFC Colonel’s Scholars and Colonel’s
Kids. These programs are dedicated to
helping the community’s kids by providing
opportunities for higher education,
helping feed children through local food
distribution centers, and providing disaster
relief to children and families with hot
meals. They also support the World
Hunger Campaign, which raises funds to
feed children in countries that suffer from
under-nutrition.
When Gordon Brown, the current
President & CEO, came to the Home, an
organization called the Children’s Alliance
had just been formed. The Children’s
Alliance is an association that helps shape
public policy to better benefit Kentucky’s
children and families. They are the voice
of our constituents in Frankfort when
we cannot be there. As Amy continued

An Oaks Day to Remember

This year, our Kosair Charities
Pediatric Convalescent Center
(KCPCC) kids were so excited
to be part of the Kentucky Derby
Festival activities. With the help
of the Louisville Fire Department,
we had several KCPCC residents
walking and wheeling in the KDF
Mini-marathon!
Since the children are all wheelchair dependent, each KCPCC
resident was able to complete a
small segment of the marathon.
The fire fighters, as well as Home
staff, volunteered to push a child
through his/her portion of the
Mini-marathon.
Advanced Therapy Center, continued
The Kay & Jim Morrissey Advanced Therapy Center will include a large therapy
space, room for large equipment therapy activities, therapy during inclement
weather, and a customized therapy pool. This facility will be open to all of
our residents, as well as children throughout our community. The Kay & Jim
Morrissey Advanced Therapy Center is scheduled to open in Fall, 2010.

Home of the Innocents’
innovative program, Project
Keepsafe, provides such a
service. Project Keepsafe
provides 24-hour residential
care and other therapeutic
support once a mother
like Sarah commits to
an intensive treatment
program. Sarah does not
have to give up
custody of her
child to the State
to use Project
Keepsafe.
Services for
children include
shelter, meals,
clothing, toys,
medical and dental
care, recreational
activities and an
extensive backyard
play area. Each
child receives
a thorough
assessment and
age appropriate
counseling,
utilizing individual
and/or group sessions and art therapy, to
help them understand what is occurring
in their family and to be part of the
recovery process. Arrangements are made
for parental visitation, and if the child
or children attend school, arrangements
are made for them to remain in their
own school, eliminating an additional,
unnecessary disruption.
A great indicator of Project Keepsafe’s
success is that in its eight-year history, 94%
of the children served were safely returned
to their families without a change in
custody. Project Keepsafe has helped a total
of 253 children from 131 families since it
began in 2002. In 2009, Project Keepsafe
helped 55 children from 26 families.
The need for Project Keepsafe is growing
exponentially even as we see the financial
support of this critical program waning.
How does the Home plan to respond to
the increased need? “We plan to reach out
to the people who love us, and love our mission
to kids in crisis”, said President and CEO,
Gordon Brown. “We will find the money
through private sources to help us continue to
serve the underserved. Our number one value
is ‘family is important’, and if we can aid in the
recovery and reunification process, we want to
do that.”
In its eight year history, 94% of the children served
were safely returned to their families.

children struggling with these issues?

programs the Home has put into place for
family preservation, by making a donation.
As for Meredith, she stayed with us for
30 days while her mother successfully
completed her treatment program. Next

desperate family seeking our assistance.

With a Purpose
In December, a pajama party was
given by the Hillcrest Parents
Group and St. John United
Methodist Church for the children
of the area. Each child came in his/
her PJs and brought new PJs for
the kids at Home of the Innocents.
They ate snacks, watched a movie
and had a great time. Over 100
pairs of pajamas were donated to
the Home. Thanks to all of the
children who made a donation.

Therapeutic Loving foster Care (TLC)
teaching parent, Rickie McFall, passed
away Tuesday, December 1, 2009.
Rickie had suffered a heart attack a
few days before Thanksgiving Day, and
slipped into a coma from which he did
not recover.
Rickie and Sherre McFall
Rickie and his wife Sherre joined the
Home of the Innocents’ TLC program
in 2006. They had fostered for some
years prior to that with another agency
and adopted a teenage daughter,
now grown. They experienced some
difficulties while with the other
foster care program that led them to
question whether they should continue
fostering. Thankfully, for five special
girls, they decided to give TLC a try.
After joining the TLC family in 2006,
the McFalls went on to adopt Macie,
who had lived in the Home’s residential
program prior to being placed with
Sherre and Rickie McFall. Macie was
a child with exceptional issues, but
the McFalls knew they were her new
“forever family”, and they hung in there
to help that dream become reality in
December, 2008. They were close to
the completion of the adoption process
with their second “forever” daughter,
D. (abbreviated due to confidentiality),
when Rickie passed away.
During this past summer, the McFalls
accepted a child into their home who
was placed via Kentucky Impact Plus

of Life
Rickie McFall, cont...
(KIP). This teenage girl had some
difficult emotional and behavioral
issues, as well as difficulties with her
birth family relationships. Within a
few short months, Sherre and Rickie
had built a relationship with the child’s
maternal grandmother and provided
support and mentoring for the child to
such a degree that she was successfully
reunited with her family. The Home’s
KIP team continued to work with this
child and her birth family, and Sherre
McFall remains a support to the child
and her grandmother to this day. It
took the patience and wisdom of this
seasoned foster family to help this
natural family find their strengths and
common ground.
Shortly before Rickie passed away,
the McFalls had accepted two more
girls, a teenage mom and baby, into
their home. Due to the teenager’s own
painful grief for a lost loved one, and
the need for Sherre and her family
to work through the next days and
months of grief and recovery, it was
decided by the children’s team that it
was in their best interests to move to a
new TLC foster family. On the day the
child moved her belongings from the
home, Sherre McFall told her that she
would always be a support to the young
lady and her daughter. A testament
to the strength and resilience of this
amazing mom is that even in the midst
of all of the challenges of the past few
months, Sherre has been focused on
how to help her girls through this
difficult time of losing their dad.
We at the Home are blessed to have
worked with Rickie and Sherre as a
team; we will miss Rickie and we are
supporting and lifting up Sherre and
the extended family at this time. As
Sherre believes, the McFalls were called
to fostering, and the successes of their
former and current foster children are
a testament to this wonderful couple.
They have established a legacy that will
forever change the family trees of some
of Kentucky’s children in crisis.

Benefits the Home
This past April, Anne Hall,
grandmother to Lauren Stokley, held
a fundraiser for the Home in memory
of her granddaughter at the famous
Castle Post in Versailles, Kentucky.
While the event was a wonderful
success, and everyone had a great time
seeing Castle Post, the best thing was
remembering Lauren.
Lauren spent three years at Home of
the Innocents in the Kosair Charities
Pediatric Convalescent Center. She
was born with cerebral palsy and died
at age 9. Anne wanted to remember
Lauren and “Lauren’s Friends,” the
other children living at the Home.
Thus began her six year planning for
this brunch event.
For the Home, this was extra special;
not only did this event raise awareness
and funds for the Home, but it also
allowed us to honor Lauren and her
time spent with us. The Home would
like to thank Anne Hall, Jackie Webb,
Mr. Tom Post (Castle Post owner),
the committee members that helped
plan the event, and the guests that
attended. It was a beautiful day,
remembering a beautiful little girl.

A Snapshot
The Home provides programs and services for these
children and young adults in crisis:
•
Medically fragile and terminally ill children who
require 24-hour-a-day skilled nursing care.
•
Those who require emergency care due to abuse,
abandonment, neglect or homelessness; or who
need foster care.
•
To homeless, pregnant, or parenting teens,
and their family members needing case
management, education, parenting, and
independent living skills.
•
Children with autism & special needs.
•
Young adults who are homeless or at risk of
homelessness, are in crisis due to mental health
or abuse, and to families who are struggling
to maintain their children in their homes to
provide stability and skills for self sufficiency.

Our 46-bed skilled nursing facility provides specialized care for
medically fragile and technology dependent children. We serve
children from infancy to age 21 who need 24-hour care as a result
of birth defects, birth injuries, chronic or terminal illness, or
accidents. Our pediatric specialists provide residents
with the best medical attention and
therapies available, while ensuring
that the kids enjoy the fun and
educational activities of
childhood. Children are
