NEWS FROM THE PRESIDENT –
Sue Minarchi
Welcome to the beginning of the 2016 Season at
the Christian C. Sanderson Museum. There are
going to be some wonderful things going on at the
museum this year, so expect to be dazzled!
Our exhibit this year will be “Simply Sanderson”
where we will take an in-depth look into the life
and times of Chris Sanderson. As you know, Chris
was a multi-faceted man. We’ll explore all of his
passions, and show photos and artifacts that have
never been seen before! As a special treat, we will
have Victoria Wyeth at the Opening Event of this
exhibit. Victoria will share stories about growing up
in the Wyeth Family and will give some insight into
the art of her famous great-grandfather,
grandfather, and uncle. As you know, the
Sanderson Museum has original art from all of
these wonderful artists and they will be on display,
along with others from Henriette Wyeth, Peter
Hurd, and Ann Wyeth, and John McCoy. You can
get tickets by visiting the Events page on the web
at www.sandersonmuseum.org. Better hurry …
this exhibit opening will sell out quickly.
The 2016 schedule is full of great events, too. In
response to many requests, we are very happy to
announce that we will have a Square Dance at
Thornbury Farm this year. You know how much
Chris loved to call square dances, so be ready to
“bow to your partner” and dance along! There will
be a live band, dance lessons, and fun for everyone
in the family!
We will also have an Artisan Fair in the spring with
some wonderful en plein air paintings done at
popular local locations, and our always enjoyable
Sanderson Shopping Spree in the fall with many
talented authors and crafters. Come prepared to
have a good time and purchase those special gifts
for everyone on your list.
There is a lot going on … exhibits, events, art, and
lots, lots more. The Sanderson Museum is open
Thursday through Sunday from 12pm to 4pm, and
most holidays. You’ll want to share this unique
museum with your friends, so bring them along.
Looking forward to seeing you at the museum!
ASK TO SEE
Chuck Ulmann, Curator
It is probably safe to say that the Sanderson
Museum has at least two thousand photographs of
Chris or pictures that Chris took at the many
locations and events he attended. Less than 100 or
so have been published.
"Simply Sanderson" is going to let you see some of
these images. I have spent more than a few hours
reviewing the files to find some that are worthy of
being shared with the Sanderson Museum
members, and guests when they visit the exhibit.
Right now I'm looking at about 8 binders full of
images that need to be culled down to the number
that we will be displaying.

In one of the binders, I located an envelope with
about 100 negatives with a note that these
negatives had never been printed. I had them
printed on proof sheets and have been
reviewing them.
So what have I seen? One is of Chris attending one
of the presidential inaugurations. I can't tell which
one, but I think it is from the 1940s based on the
car in the picture.
There are a number from Chadds Ford. One shows
Chris in rubber boots with binoculars. I wonder
what he sees!
There are a number of color images from the late
50s or early 60s. One looks like he is standing on
the bank of Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies,
but some more research will be needed to
accurately determine the location.
There is another one that shows Chris standing in
the doorway of the log cabin in Downingtown.
Others are from Phoenixville and the area around
there. I'll get one of my "experts" to help identify
these locations as well.
Another one is when Chris is likely in his twenties
sitting on a boulder with a tree behind it looking
out over a field. I wonder where that one was
taken.
And, last but not least, there is a picture that Chris
took of himself in a mirror in front of a Grant’s
dime store with a 1953 or 1954 Chevrolet or
Pontiac 4 door sedan behind him. His briefcase is
sitting on the ground and open from getting his
camera out. This is not the first photograph like
this. I have seen some from the 1940s as
well. How do you like that? Chris taking a "selfie"
before smart cameras and smart phones!
Chris taking a “selfie” in front of Grant’s Dime Store.
Can you image the pictures he would have taken
with a smart phone? He was ahead of his time
using old technology. He would probably have
been a voracious texter too. I can't help but think
of all his notes as his version of today's "blog!"
So "Ask To See" some of the photos and notes that
were ahead of their time.
Don’t miss out on the opening event of
