THANKSGIVING 2014
HAPPY THANKSGIVING
Dear Associates,
This Thanksgiving, I am again reminded that we
have much to be thankful for at Sanderson Farms.
Voted as one of America’s 100 Most Trustworthy
Companies by Forbes Magazine, our company is
blessed to have directors, employees and contract
producers who consistently uphold our company’s
vision by being honest, trustworthy and treating
people with respect and integrity. With solid
operating margins, favorable market conditions and
an eminent expansion into East Texas, Sanderson
Farms is poised for future growth and additional
opportunities to reward its shareholders in 2015 and
beyond.
We are pleased with the construction progress of
our new Palestine, Texas facilities, and we expect to
begin processing chickens on February 9, 2015. This
expansion will increase our company’s processing
capacity by nearly 15 percent and will add another
1,200 employees to our ranks. Sanderson Farms
looks forward to the opportunities that these new
state-of-the-art poultry facilities will create for our
shareholders, customers, employees and growers.
Thanks to the due diligence of our employees
and contract producers, Sanderson Farms has
had yet another outstanding year. We continue to
recover from the challenging market conditions
of 2011 and 2012 in spite of lower than anticipated
processing volumes triggered by decreasing hatch
rates and lower live bird weights. The high prices of
competing proteins have offset such shortcomings
in our performance and shifted more consumer
demand to affordable proteins such as chicken.
Cash prices for corn delivered to the company
decreased 28.7 percent compared with the third
quarter a year ago, while the price for soybean
meal delivered to the company increased 17.6
percent. For the nine months ended July 31, 2014,
the company’s cash prices for corn decreased
33.7 percent, whereas soybean meal increased 3.7
percent when compared to the nine months ended
July 31, 2013.
While market conditions remained favorable
during the quarter, financial results were negatively
affected by lower than anticipated volume
processed at the company’s poultry plants.
THANKSGIVING 2014
Several factors contributed to the reduced volume,
including fewer head processed as a result of lower
than target hatch rates at our hatcheries and lower
than target live weights of chickens processed. The
hatch rate has now recovered.
It has been disappointing this year to
make no progress on our operational goals.
That must improve in 2015. I am optimistic that
2015 will hold great things for our company. We will
continue to maintain a strong balance sheet that
supports our business and provides the flexibility
to pursue a growth strategy that allows us to
perform consistently within the top ten percent
of our industry. It is my hope that in 2015, we, as
a company, can surpass all our goals to achieve
unparalleled standards of performance in
our industry.
By the time this letter reaches you, we will
have concluded our second annual Sanderson
Farms Championship golf tournament. I have high
hopes that this year’s tournament will exceed our
contributions to Friends of Children’s Hospital from
the prior year and create additional opportunities
to assist critically ill children through the charitable
care provided by the Blair E. Batson Hospital for
Children. During this season of Thanksgiving, what
better time is there to give back to those who
are less fortunate than us and thank God for the
blessings of health and healing.
This Thanksgiving, please join my family as we
allow this holiday season to be a season of joy and
gratitude to God for all of our many blessings. Susie
and I have so much to be thankful for this year, most
importantly, for our health, our three children, their
spouses, and our three beautiful grandchildren, who
continue to be such a blessing in our lives. From my
family to yours, may this season of Thanksgiving be
filled with many blessings and plenty of time spent
with your loved ones.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Lampkin Butts
President and Chief Operating Officer

Development and Corporate Communication, has
been named amongst the Girl Scouts of Greater
Mississippi’s 2014 Women of Distinction. The Women
of Distinction honor is a part of a national Girl
Scout program that celebrates the achievements
of women. Honorees of the program are women
whose personal and professional accomplishments
make them positive role models that inspire girls
to achieve their own goals and dreams. Women
recognized by the annual Women of Distinction
program exemplify the Girl Scout Promise through
ethical leadership and a commitment to making
a difference in the lives of their fellow citizens
through community service.
Robinson, a Jones County native, has served in
various capacities throughout her more than 36
year tenure with the company, beginning her
career in the poultry industry as a Cost Accountant
shortly after her graduation from college. Robinson
graduated from the University of Southern
Mississippi with a Bachelor of Science degree
in Business Administration with an emphasis in
Accounting.
ROBIN ROBINSON
In 2000, Robinson was named to her current
position with Sanderson Farms as Director of Organization Development and Corporate Communication.
As director, her responsibilities include Training, Trainee and Internship Programs, Recruitment Program
and Corporate Communication. She currently chairs Sanderson Farms’ Wage and Salary Committee, as
well as serving on the company’s Executive Committee and Diversity Committee.
Robinson serves as the Chairman of the Board for the Jones County Junior College Foundation and is the

CHICKEN
in my Chicken
By Dr. Phil Stayer,
Corporate Veterinarian
How often have you been asked,
“Are there hormones in my chicken?”
I get that question all the time. “How
else can chickens get so big, so fast?”
The simple answer to the second
question is intelligent selection. Good
ole’ Mendelian genetics has produced
linear improvements on growth rate
and feed conversion since the 1950s.
In truth, the only consumable
foods that do not have hormones
are water, minerals or completely
synthetic (man-made) items. Every
plant and animal has some type
of naturally occurring hormones to
regulate growth, healing and other
functions of life. Any meat we eat,
whether wild caught fish, farm raised
fowl or free-ranging beef, has some
remaining hormones from when the
animal was still alive. Even Twinkies,
those unnatural cakes of man-made
sweetness, have hormones since the
cake portion has some wheat flour as
an ingredient. Anything made from
plants or animals will have residual
naturally occurring hormones, albeit
at very low levels. If there weren’t
hormones in the chicken you ate, then
it wasn’t natural chicken.
Artificial hormones are available for
use in some meat producing animals
in the United States– but none are
10
available for poultry. A producer
may label chicken with “no added
hormones or steroids,” but they must
also include the following statement,
“USDA prohibits the use of hormones
and steroids in poultry.” Chicken
may have fewer hormones per
pound compared to other meats,
but the hormones found
in any meat product
(beef, pork, fish or other
species) are considered
so inconsequential that
the USDA lists no warnings
on any United States
produced meat.
How about antibiotics?
Aren’t all conventionally
reared
food
animals
dependent on antibiotics
so much so that we
are
wearing
out
antibiotics for human use?
Does
chicken meat contain antibiotics?
The simple answer to all these
questions is “no.”
Antibiotics are used in animal
agriculture when indicated for animal
well-being.
At Sanderson Farms,
veterinarians design preventative
health programs, primarily through
biosecurity
(prevent
disease
exposure) and vaccination (build

immunity before exposure), as
there are very few therapeutic
options (antibiotics) available for
use in poultry. Despite our best
plans, animals may still get ill. The
live production veterinary team
directs diagnostic efforts to find
the cause of the problem so that
similar issues may be prevented
in other flocks. However, if a
flock contracts a disease, we will
do our best to take care of the
chickens with the available Food
and Drug Administration (FDA)
approved tools, which at times
involves antibiotics.
The FDA regulates antibiotics
used in commercial poultry
production.
All
antibiotics
used in chickens produced
within the United States have
FDA
established
withdrawal
times– which are the numbers
of days between the last dose
given and the date the animal

consumption. The withdrawal
time ensures that there are no
harmful antibiotic residues left
when the meat is packaged.
There are labels stating “raised
without antibiotics” claims that
reflect upon how the flock was
raised; not the finished product.
All
commercially
produced
meat, regardless of the label,
is free of any harmful antibiotic
residues when offered for sale.
Many
consumers
are
concerned that antibiotic use
in food animals may lead to
antibiotic resistance in humans.
It has not been proven that
consuming meat from animals
in which antibiotics were used
to treat disease contributes to
antibiotic resistance in humans.
Antibiotic resistance transfer
tends to be more direct, such
as from person to person. For
example, almost all human
MRSA
(methicillin
resistant
Staphylococcus
aureus)
has
been documented to come from
other humans, most particularly
through
in-hospital
contact
(nosocomial infections). It has
also been shown that people
can get resistant organisms from
animals by giving antibiotics
to animals that live in close
proximity to them, especially
close contact with pets.
For antibiotic resistance to
transfer from food animals
to consumers, the bacteria
must survive through many
preventative measures in our
modern U.S. food chain. From
Sanderson Farms’ perspective,
we
stop
any
antibiotic
treatments well in excess of FDA
requirements prior to harvest. We
sustain a precise time frame for
food and water to be given to
the flock before transferring birds

THANKSGIVING 2014
5K CHICKEN RUN
By Brian Romano,
Director of Administration
After a long, hot, 12 weeks of
the Walk-to-Run Program, all of
the hard work and dedication
paid off. On September 27, 2014,
Sanderson Farms held its first
ever 5K Chicken Run and Family
Fun Day.
The employees at Laurel,
Collins and the Corporate Office
were enthusiastic and extremely
competitive on race day, and we
saw some exciting finishes. Only
nine seconds separated the top
two female runners, and a mere
two seconds was the difference
between the top two male
runners. There were a number
of great prizes to go around, as
the top seven finishers in both
male and female divisions, in
four separate age categories,
went
home
with
awards.
At the end of the day, a total of
116 prizes were awarded to race
participants. In addition to the
race prizes, there were several
quality door prizes presented to
employees who did not place
in the 5K race.
Entertainment for the event
included music from the band
84 West, along with inflatable
jumps, slides, face painting
and an obstacle course for the
children. A team from Sanderson
Farms prepared a healthy lunch
(chicken, of course) for everyone
who registered for the race, as
well as for their immediate family
members. The weather was great,
the atmosphere was fabulous
and the event was a tremendous
success.
During the 12 weeks leading
up to the race, participation in
WALK-TO-RUN
TESTIMONIALS
I have been an active person all of my life. I have competed in
gymnastics, cheerleading, dance team and ultimate frisbee.
The one thing I have not been able to do is distance running
because I have asthma. For a long time, I had this mindset that
I could not do certain things because I might have an asthma
attack. The Walk-to-Run Program has enabled me to push that
misconception out of my mind. The format of the program
has helped me to slowly build up my lungs, as well as my leg
muscles, to where I no longer need to use my inhaler midrun. I still use my inhaler before setting out on my run, but I no
longer need to carry it with me. I may not be the fastest one
out there, but I am proud of what I have accomplished thus far.
-Kelly Sawyer, Staff Auditor, Corporate Office
The Walk-to-Run Program has been a life change for me. I
feel revived after walking. I was taking ten different pills each
morning and seven at night, as well as four shots of insulin
daily. Now, I do not have to take insulin. This was my number
one goal. Hopefully, after a couple more months on the
program, I will have met all of my goals, which include getting
off the remainder of my medicines. I have lost 34 pounds and
feel 100% better.
-Wanda Green, Benefits Clerk, Corporate Office
THANKSGIVING 2014
the Walk-to-Run program was
rewarded with various incentives
for registration and completion
of each 4-week segment of
training.
Surveys
are
being
evaluated for the possibility of
expanding the Walk -to- Run
Program and 5K to other locations
in 2015.
A big thanks to the
Health and Wellness Committee
for all their hard work in planning
the event, and for their vision
for healthy Sanderson Farms
employees.
There were 386 employees who
ran or walked in the 5K Chicken Run
and Family Fun Day race, and an
estimated 1,200 people in the park,
counting family members. The
winners from the race are listed on
the page to follow. Congratulations
to all of our 5K Chicken Run Winners
and to everyone who participated
in the event!
I have been at Sanderson Farms for almost 20 years, and this is
the first time Sanderson Farms has inspired me to get healthy.
It is easier to be healthy when our company makes it fun for
us. The Walk-to-Run Program motivates all of us to be healthy
together. I’m glad that multiple locations are coming together
and will be able to swap success stories and celebrate at the
5K and Family Fun Day.
-Lula Echols, Housekeeper, Collins Processing
I’m thankful for Sanderson Farms investing in my health and
wellness through the Walk-to-Run Program. I have the lowest
blood pressure I have ever had. I’m excited about participating
in the 5K as a walker. I’m also looking forward to the Family Fun
Day and being able to celebrate my health with my family. I
hope we will be able to do this every year.
-Alnesia Myers, Housekeeper, Collins Processing
I’ve always said, “Tomorrow, I’m going to start.” When Sanderson
Farms introduced the Walk-to-Run Program, I knew there wasn’t a
reason why I couldn’t or shouldn’t get healthy. I started my quest
for healthy living in May 2014. The first step was to monitor what I
ate and to drink plenty of water along with exercise. I prepared
myself not only physically, but mentally, to exercise at least five
days a week, which also includes a 5K route every Saturday
morning. So far, with better food choices and exercise, I have lost
30 pounds. I’m so excited and I look forward to future wellness
programs similar to the Walk-to-Run Program and 5K.

PRESIDENT'S SAFETY AWARD
By Scott Rushing, Manager of Health and Safety
The President’s Safety Committee was established
in 2011 to implement innovative ways to eliminate
workplace accidents and to promote safety awareness
across all Processing and Production divisions within
Sanderson Farms. The purpose of the committee is
to assist senior management with creating the safest
workplace possible for all of our employees, which is
a workforce of more than 11,000. The President’s Safety
Award recognizes Sanderson Farms divisions that
achieve superior safety performance over the course of
the fiscal year.
In November 2013, the President’s Safety Committee
met to review benchmarks previously agreed upon
to determine which division had the best safety
performance in the 2013 fiscal year. The President’s Safety
Committee is chaired by Lampkin Butts, President and
Chief Operating Officer, and is comprised of members
including Brian Williams, Director of Processing; Randy
Pettus, Director of Production; and Division Managers
from each respective division of Sanderson Farms.
The President’s Safety Committee is pleased to
announce that Hazlehurst Production, Waco Processing
and the Foods Division have earned the President’s
28
Safety Award for 2013. Brazos Production and Brazos
Processing were also recognized for their commendable
safety efforts and significant reduction of injuries. Not
