The Section 5 Officer Elections was hosted at Brimfield High School on May 1, 2014. Chapters that attended were Brimfield, Elmwood, Eureka, Metamora, Midland, Putnam County, and Princeville. The evening was kicked off with pizza, followed by FFA Olympics and section elections. Throughout the night, members raised money for the section by donating change to their favorite Advisor and Section officer to be able to pie them in the face. The winners, Mr. Heiser and Austin Pletsch, enjoyed a “pie” in the face for their popularity. Blue & Gold Journal 2 The 86th Illinois State Convention was held June 10-12 at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield. 3,781 members attended the convention, some from Brimfield, Elmwood, Eureka, Midland, Princeville, and Putnam County. The Convention was filled with many exhibits, sessions, speeches, workshops, meal functions, elections, and, of course, the FFA dance. Vitoria Stoller (Princeville), Josh DeGroot (Princeville), and Kyle Zimmerman (Eureka) won in their Proficiency Award areas and will move on to the national level. Mikaela Wieland (Princeville) was one of ten Outstanding Chapter Reporters and one of five Outstanding Section Reporters. Midland represented well in winning the section Heritage Award, Cooperative Activities Award, Bankers Plaque Award, Student Development Award, Chapter Development Award, Community Development Award, and 2014 Sweepstakes Award. Fieldcrest, Princeville, and Putnam County were 2014 Century Challenge Award Winners. The convention was filled with a multitude of hellos and goodbyes to new and old friends, officers, and one of our own advisors, Mr. Rick Shreffler (Elmwood). The convention closed with the installation of the new State Officers: Cody Morris, President; Tommy Justison, Vice President; Andrew Klein, Reporter; Renee Kinzinger, Secretary; Willow Krumwiede, Treasurer; and our new section President, Rochele Rosa (Midland). Blue & Gold Journal 3 Chapter News from Section 5 Elmwood Barnyard Petting Zoo By Maddie Caldwell, Elmwood FFA Reporter On Friday, May 2nd, 2014, the Elmwood FFA Chapter hosted their annual petting zoo for the elementary students from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The day was filled with many educational sessions including visits from 20 various classes and a raffle at the end of the day of two New Zealand rabbits donated by EP Rabbitry. The animals being displayed were cattle, sheep and goats, ducks and chickens, rabbits, a dog, a horse, and many tractors for students to sit in. Thank you to all who made this day possible, especially the individuals who brought in animals for viewing. Barnyard Discoveries at Elmwood On Monday, May 19th, 2014, several members from the Elmwood FFA Chapter assisted with the Barnyard Discoveries tour held outside the grade school office. Ron Wasson, owner and operator of Barnyard Discoveries, had his trailer on display for the elementary students that included a miniature horse, two miniature south down sheep, two goats, a miniature KuneKune pig, poultry, and two rabbits. Princeville FFA Canoe Trip By Jordan Kraft, Princeville FFA Reporter Princeville FFA drove down to Eminence, MO, June 22 through June 26, to canoe the Current River. Eleven members with the highest points attended. The members included 5 boys and 6 girls. They were Mikaela Wieland, Victoria Stoller, Laura Sandall, Jordan Kraft, Emily Snyder, Daniel Feucht, Andrew Wells, Josh DeGroot, Skyler Brazel, Colin Stahl, and Logan Rogers. We canoed every day, with our shortest run being 9 miles and our longest run being 11 miles. I think everyone can agree that some favorite parts were tipping canoes and firing water guns at each other. Along the way, we jumped off numerous jumping rocks, swam in cold springs, saw Welch Hospital, and explored caves. This annual trip was memorable for all. Blue & Gold Journal 4 The section officer team met at Monical’s Pizza in Chillicothe on June 18. The team discussed section goals for the upcoming year, team goals, and their personal goals. Possible fund raisers for the section were discussed as well. The next meeting will be at the Section Fair in Henry.
