As an infant he was adopted by Clara and Paul Jobs, and named Stephen Paul Jobs. As a boy, Jobs and his father would work on electronics in the family garage. Paul would show his son how to take apart and reconstruct electronics, a hobby which instilled confidence, diligence, and mechanical ability in young Jobs. While he was an intelligent thinker, his youth was filled with frustrations over formal schooling. In elementary school, he tested so well, that administrators wanted to skip him to high school, but his parents declined. Jobs spent his spare time at Hewlett-Packard, where he befriended a brilliant computer engineer, Steve Wozniak. After high school, Jobs enrolled at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Lacking direction, he dropped out of college after six months and spent the next 18 months dropping in on “creative” classes. In 1976, when Steve Jobs was just 21, he and Wozniak started Apple Computers. Jobs and Wozniak are credited with revolutionizing the computer industry by improving technology by making the machines smaller, cheaper, intuitive, and accessible to everyday consumers. Among these machines were the iPod, iPhone, iPad, iMac, etc. In 2003, Jobs discovered he had a neuroendocrine tumor, a rare but operable form of pancreatic cancer. Instead of immediately opting for surgery, Jobs chose to alter his pescovegetarian diet while weighing Eastern treatment options. For nine months Jobs postponed surgery, making Apple’s board of directors nervous. Executives feared that shareholders would pull their stocks if word got out that their CEO was ill. But in the end, Job’s confidentiality took precedence over shareholder disclosure. In 2004, he had a successful surgery to remove the pancreatic tumor. Early in 2009, reports circulated about Jobs’ weight loss, some predicting his health issues had returned, which included a liver transplant. Jobs had responded to these concerns by stating he was dealing with a hormone imbalance. After nearly a year out of the spotlight, Steve Jobs delivered a keynote address at an invite-only Apple event September 9, 2009. With respect to his personal life, Steve Jobs remained a private man who rarely disclosed information about his family. What is known is Jobs fathered INDEX a daughter with girlNEWS friend Chrisann BrenSPORTS nan when he was 23. Homecoming ENTERTAINMENt Continued on pg. 7 Features news El Pasoans Protest Corporate Greed page 2 Devin Lozano Staff Writer A movement starts with an idea “and an idea is bulletproof.” That is a quote from the film V for Vendetta, film that was based off of Guy Fawkes who tried to destroy the government in order to rebuild it. Modern day revolutionaries have adopted the Guy Fawkes mask, featured in the film, as a symbol for any politically charged movement. Occupy El Paso was no exception. This movement all started in New York with Occupy Wall Street in Zuccotti Park. The 99%, everyone who falls below the top earning elite, decided to stand together to regain control of their government. The reasons behind this movement are corporations being too powerful, to get less tax for the common people, stop war, make college more affordable and to increase minimum wage. The people behind Occupy America, the protests going on around the nation, call themselves the 99%. Anyone who falls below the top earning 1% are part of this. They want people to band together and fight this greed. “Corporations should not be involved as much as they are in today’s politics,” said one of the many El Pasoans camped out in San Jancinto Plaza. This is their second week of protest. Everyone supported each other. They all had a strong sense of community. They all wanted to change the corporate involvement in politics. They also wanted to show people the breaks these corporations get. This was shown around the plaza on signs. One that laid out side of a tent that stated “Bank Of America made 4.4 billion in 2009; Received $1.9 billion in tax ter. It was a lunch style table with crockpots, refunds; Received $1 trillion in bailout and paid spoons, napkins and a tub of water. His reason no Federal Income Tax.” Other spray-painted for being there was to protest the corporate cardboard laid outside of tents with sayings like greed but mainly to support the others there. “Where is Robin Hood when we need him?” He wants to bring awareness to the problem and “Heal America tax Wall Street.” These signs which is the main goal of most protesters. After a marathon162 game regular season, capped by awe inducing collapses of the Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves, eight teams were left to battle it out to be crowned World Series Champions. It has been a wild playoffs with both leagues best teams the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies losing in five games in the Division Series, then each leagues second best team, Detroit Tigers and Milwaukee Brewers, losing in the Championship Series. This left the Texas Rangers out of the American League and the St. Louis Cardinals of the National League to play in 105th edition of the Fall Classic. Texas is making a return to trip to the World Series after losing to the San Fransico Giants last season and is in their second World Series in their 51 year history. St. Louis, one of the premier franchises in baseball, is making their 18th World Series Appearance and is trying to win the title for their 11th time in franchise history. The 2011 World Series lived up the title “Fall Classic” with every game being exciting and showcasing the many strategies of baseball. Games 1 and 2 were throw down, grind out games of baseball with each game being decided by only one run. The offensive explosion of game 3 was a wonder to watch as the Cardinal went off for 16 runs and Albert Puljos hit 3 home runs in a beat down of the Rangers. The Rangers came right back though in Game 4 as starting pitcher Derek Holland was lights out pitching 8 1/3 innings of 2 hit baseball and completely stifled the Cardinals offense. In Game 5 clutch hitting from Rangers catcher Mike Napoli gave the Rangers the win and left them one game from the title. If the series was not good already Game 6 made this one to remember. The Cardinals were down 2 runs and down to their last strike in the bottom of the 9th but tied it up and sent the game into extras. In the top of the 10th the Rangers Josh Hamilton hit a two run home run to put the Ranges back up. The Cardinals were again down to their last strike but once again scrapped out two runs to go to the 11th inning. In the bottom the 11th Cardinal David Freese hit a walk out solo homer to force the decisive Game 7. In Game 7 Texas jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead but were shut down the rest of the game, and were their own worst enemies when they walked and hit by pitched 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th to put the Cardinals up by 5 and almost out reach. The Cardinals bullpen shut down the Rangers offense the rest of the way and the Cardinals won their 11th World Series title. The Cardinals who were 10 ½ games out of the playoffs with a month to play and who were only dreaming of the post season fought their way back into contention and only made the playoffs on the last day of the regular season made the improbable run and are now crowned champions of baseball. Indy Racer, Dan Wheldon Dead Staff Writer Dan Wheldon, Indy racer, died Sunday October 16, 2011 in a fatal car crash at Las Vegas Indy 300. Wheldon won the Indy 500 this May and back in 2005, the same year Danica Patrick was a rookie. Wheldon was 33 years old with a wife and two kids. The pileup occurred in the 11th lap on turn two involving 15 racers. Wheldon tried maneuvering to the left to avoid the pile up but instead hit the back of another racecar, catapulting him into the air at speeds of excess of 200 miles per hour. Wheldon was rushed to the hospital in a helicopter but died due to “unsurvivable” head injuries. After the pile up, 19 of Wheldons fellow drivers performed five laps in his honor. “Daniel was born to be a racer and yesterday he left us doing what he loved, he was true gentleman and champion on and off the track.” Clive Wheldon, Dan Wheldons father, said after the loss of his son. Dan began racing at the age of four with go karts and showed promise and a love for the sport. Wheldon moved to the United States in 1999 to get his first sponser and eventually got his first IndyCar Series race, in 2002. Dan Wheldon was a huge friend and a huge part of the Indy race family. This has been the first fatal accident in an Indy race series since Paul Dana was killed at the Homestead-Miami track in 2006. Another driver had lost control and gone into a spin during a morning warm-up; Dana died when he hit the other car at 200mph.Wheldon helped work with engineers by test driving future race cars for the Indy series, which included major safety modications. Dan was incredibly devoted to racing and his family. Dario Franchitti: “Everybody in IndyCar considered Dan a friend. You saw what the reaction was. Dan was one of those special, special people.” Franchitti was Wheldon’s former teammate and friend since the age of six, “I’m numb and speechless. One minute you’re joking around in driver intros and the next Dan’s gone…He was six years old when I first met him. He was this little kid and the next thing you know he was my team-mate.” Wheldon was trully special behind the wheel, bringing excitement and chrisma to the sport. He died loving what he did, and brought a huge light to fellow racer, friends and family. “Myself and so many others are devastated. I pray for Suzi and the kids that God will give them strength.” Danica said the day of the accident. “His rapid ascent to the very top ranks of US motorsport, capped by two fantastic Indy 500 victories and the 2005 Indy Car title, are the lasting legacy of a hugely talented driver and champion…the motorsport world is now in mourning following Dan’s passing. On behalf of everyone at McLaren Mercedes, I pass.” McLaren team principle Martin Whitmarsh, said in his statement. Wheldon will be hugely missed by his fans, teammates and family, but he will never be forgotten thanks to his winning and loving personalities. you know you want one buy your yearbook today $85 Zelda’s Castle Staff Writer A week filled with mustaches, guys in dresses, 80’s teased hair, striped shirts, video game characters, homecoming mums and garters, and slippers. Instead of using a blank white canvas they use the city sidewalk. These artists are spreading there Italian techniques with such drawings. El Paso hosted its fourth annual Chalk the Block Art festival this weekend. The event took place downtown October 14-16. Over 25,000 people attended the three day event. The Festival was full of murals, sitespecific illustrations, performances, food and fun. People came out and watched these artists do what they love. They have a lot of talent and patience to do something that takes so long. They’re good at what they do and you can certainly notice that they put in all they have to, to do such amazing work. A lot of the pictures can have some sort of meaning behind it. The illustrations are very eye catching which explains why a lot of El Pasoans and some tourists come and visit this event annually. Chalk the Block was a big hit the first year it took place here in El Paso. Four years Steve Jobs continued from page 1 Jobs denied paternity of his daughter Lisa in court documents, claiming he was sterile. Jobs did not initiate a relationship with his daughter until she was 7 but, when she was a teenager, she came to live with her father. In the early 1990s, Jobs met Laurene Powell at Stanford business school, where Powell was an MBA student. They married on March 18, 1991, and lived together in Palo Alto, California, with their three children. later it’s still something people seem to be entertained by. This event isn’t only for the artists. There was also an area for little kids, so it was more like a family event. The drawings look very life-like, and very well put together. There were many expressions from people wondering how it was possible to be able to draw such art with chalk. There was a special performance by Dave Ford, who created a swing set, drum kit, designed to generate rhythmic patterns out of play. Other entertainers were Tucson, Arizona’s Flam-Chen, and fire-eating aerialists who were hung by air balloons. There was music by locals such as Jim Ward and Frontera Bugalu. Over 90 people signed up to compete in the event, but only 51 were chosen to get a chance to win in different cash awards which included a $2,000 Best of Show Award. The Best of Show Award was something new that they introduced this year. By the time the artists were finishing their drawings, there were clouds of dust all over the place. Everyone had a good time and it was something El Paso wasn’t used to seeing. On October 5, 2011, Apple Inc. announced that co-founder Steve Jobs had died. He was 56 years old at the time of his death. Mona Simpson, sister of the late Apple cofounder, reveals details of the final moments Jobs spent with his family. Jobs, who once memorably described death as “very likely the single best invention of life”, departed this world with a lingering look at his family and the simple, if mysterious, observation: “Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow.” features #RealTalk with A&M Michael Rolon & Amanda Varela Staff Writers Dear A&M, How do I not get annoyed by my best friend? Swag. -M Dear Swagless Kid, Somehow this random word, “swag” became a word in the dictionary and it is very annoying, so you’re not alone. Honestly, everyone is all hyped up on having “swag” so this won’t go away for a while till some new dumb word or phrase comes along. So to keep you from using that sailor mouth of yours, just make fun of it. If you read a tweet over Twitter that has the hash tag #swag just start laughing and realize those people don’t read. Xoxo -A iPhone pro’s and con’s Staff Writer On June 29th 2007 people lined the streets, camped out and went Star Wars crazy in order to get their hands on a piece of technology that would change the way of life forever. The Apple iPhone was the game changer in the phone world. It was basically a pocket computer… but cooler, and with the iPhone3G and 3GS upgrades it was able to do everything but blow your nose for you. Now four years, and four successful models behind them the iPhone still dominates the smart phone industry, and if you didn’t think it couldn’t possibly get anymore better, think again and say hello to the new Apple iPhone4S. Along with the iPhone, Apple released a software update for it’s other products. The update is called iOS5 and if you are an avid iPhone user you have noticed the difference. iOS5 introduces Notification Center, a new way to have all your notifications organized and kept in a way that they won’t interrupt your favorite YouTube video or disrupt your epic Tweet. Just slide the top of your screen down, after a box at the top of your screen turns down to subtly notify you, and all your notifications are right there ready for you to see. Speaking of Tweeting, Twitter is now integrated into the iPhone’s operating system. Tweet from Safari, Photos, YouTube, and virtually anywhere else in your phone. Another improvement is the new camera button in the lock screen of the phone so you can always have your camera handy for those once in a lifetime moments you want a snapshot of. iOS5 comes with over 200 changes and can be found on your updated Apple device or a new iPhone4S. One thing the new iPhone introduces that the world has yet to see is Siri, a personal assistant built into the phone. If your picturing a lame voice control system as seen on many other phones you are furthest from the truth. Siri has a voice recognition, meaning she bases her answers off of the way you ask the question. You could ask virtually anything and she will come up with an answer. Where to eat? Where’s the cheapest gas? How much wood can a wood chuck, chuck? She has got your back. Siri is so amazing and creatively hilarious most will find themselves begging for her love and volume control toggle in marriage. She will decline, because she respects you. Yes, the iPhone4S does not physically look any different from the iPhone4, but as the saying goes, if it’s not broken don’t fix it. And just because it looks the same does not mean there were no hardware changes, because there were. The iPhone now has two antennas so that it is now almost impossible to drop a call, also making the phone the first iPhone to be a world phone. Meaning you can now travel the globe and take your trusty sidekick Siri and your social networks with you everywhere you go. The new camera is 8 mega pixels and allows more light, which basically means way better pictures, think the best pictures you can get off a phone, better. It truly speaks for itself. Better, faster, smarter and still original, the iPhone4S is revamped and ready to catapult this generation into Jetsons territory. The only lingering question left to be answered is; What could possibly be next? OMG! I’m So Embarassed! Andrea Munoz and Karah Marcell Staff Writers Have you ever had an embarrassing secret? I’m sure we all have one! Listen to these embarrassing stories, I’m sure it will brighten your day. “It was my last year of middle school. I had it all, I looked good and played sports. It was the day of the school dance that I realized I had to tell the girl I liked how I felt. I had a drink in my hand as I walked over to her. I was about to ask the big question but then I started to shake and stumble over my words. I got so nervous that I dropped the drink all over her cheerleading uniform. I felt so bad! Not only did I spill the drink on her, but everyone laughed at me. I was so embarrassed I started to cry. I never thought I’d tell anyone the story until now. Oh yeah one last thing don’t spill any drinks on the girl you like!” Aaron Acuna (9th Grade) “I had bunk beds in my room when I was seven years old. One night I rolled off the top bunk when I was sleeping. When I fell I hit my head on the ceiling fan while it was on. I think I passed out when I hit the floor. I woke up with a big gash on my head. Everyone made fun of me and called me a piggy bank.” Anonymous “When I was in elementary school every Wednesday they gave out chocolate milk. One day I got sad because I wanted chocolate milk but it was Monday and we still had 2 more days until the chocolate truck came by. I started screaming and crying until I realized that the entire school was looking at me. Till this day my friends still call and remind me about it.” Coach Montano “When I was a little boy, I used to wear girl underwear, yes; you read correctly, girl underwear. My parents would take my sister and I to the store and in order to save money they would buy me girls underwear because it was cheaper. I didn’t realize I had girl underwear until the third grade when my friends all had superhero underwear and I had underwear with flowers and cupcakes on it.” Anonymous ads Kellie Apodaca Staff Writer Hello fellow students of Montwood.
