2014 Mission Award Winners
Angel Award,
Raimonda King,
Mother and Baby
Raimonda displays SMH’s core
values not only in her interactions
with associates, but also through
her leadership role. She provides
feedback and encouragement to
associates and is an active leader on
the floor who exudes kindness and
sets a great example of what a nurse
leader should be. Raimonda’s honesty
and excellent communication skills
allow associates to feel included and
informed. Always taking time to listen
to concerns from patients, physicians
and nurses, she earns respect through
her passion and dedication and is
a shining example of SMH’s value
of respect. One associate wrote,
“Raimonda has been our beacon
and rock while handling a time of
transition with poise and a Christ-like
attitude. She treats others the way
she wants to be treated and comes
to work every day with a smiling face
and a heart of gold.”

Christian Mission
Award, Libby
Senese, Emergency
Department
Libby is kind, attentive and always
strives to meet individual needs
both physically and spiritually. She is
respectful of all associates, patients
and their families. Libby is positive
and her attitude is infectious. Even in
difficult situations, she makes a point
to let everyone know that she feels
it’s a privilege to come to work and
take care of patients. One associate
wrote, “For more than 10 years, I have
worked with Libby and have never
worked with anyone who models the
mission of Jesus as well as she does.
She always puts her patients first,
regardless of how bad the situation
may be. Libby sets an example for
the entire staff on how patient care
should be and can be delivered.”
Community Service
Award, Amy Fowler,
Laboratory
Amy exemplifies the values of SMH
both at work and in the community
by spreading the gospel of friendship,
kindness, forgiveness and love. She
is a committed volunteer as a Court
Appointed Special Advocate (CASA),
visiting with appointed children
weekly and offering her support as
they transition from placement to
placement. She volunteered 599
hours last year alone. As a CASA,
Amy serves as the only constant
these foster kids have in their lives,
and stays with every case until it’s
closed and the child is reintegrated
back into the home or parental rights
are relinquished or terminated by
the court. Amy attends all court
hearings and submits reports to the
judge about the child, while also
supporting the parents by offering
encouragement and helping them
work toward their goal. One associate
wrote, “Amy’s commitment to
children in our community spreads
the light of our Christian mission
into some of the darkest corners. Her
determination, respect and integrity
in these cases exemplify the Christian
values of Shawnee Mission Health.”
We Love You
and Your Heart
February is American Heart Month.
Did you know that heart disease is the
leading cause of death among men and
women in the U.S. every year? To raise
awareness, SMH has partnered with
seven Johnson County, Kan., restaurants
to bring you heart-healthy dishes during
the month of February.
Throughout February, restaurants
Grand Street Café-Lenexa, Newport
Grill, Paradise Diner, Story, Tavern at
Mission Farms, Tavern in the Village and
Ya Ya’s will offer dishes that are low in
fat and sodium and other ingredients
that may foster heart disease. For
each heart-healthy dish enjoyed by
consumers, these restaurants will
donate 10 percent to the Shawnee
Mission Heart & Vascular Center.
Enjoying delicious food, supporting our
local restaurants and getting smarter
about our heart health – it’s a winning
combination! Share your favorites
using #SMHHeartMonth. For more
information and to view the featured
dishes, visit ShawneeMisssion.org/
health-services/heart-and-vascularcenter and click on 2015 Heart Healthy
Restaurant Partners.

Pasta Lunch – March 4
Administration invites all SMH
associates, physicians and volunteers
to attend a free pasta lunch in the
Garden Café on Wednesday, March
4, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. or 11 p.m.-midnight
(Midnight Meal). Join us for oodles of
noodles in celebration of you!
Help save a life by donating blood on
Friday, March 6, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., in
the Shawnee Mission Room. SMH
transfused 4,800 blood products
in 2014. We are at risk of not
receiving adequate supplies from The
Community Blood Center because
of critically low donations from our
community. Play your part and help
SMH patients in need. All registered
donors will receive a voucher for a
free ice cream treat. To sign up, visit
esavealifenow.org or call Julie Jenks at
913-676-2022 (ext. 72022). Walk-ins
are welcome.
Recognizing Physician
Excellence Awards
Each year, the Recognizing Physician
Excellence program honors six
physicians who are deemed
outstanding in fulfilling the mission
and values of the hospital in both their
professional and personal lives.
“You are you that is truer than
true. There is no one alive who
is youer than you.” – Dr. Seuss
Nominations are submitted by SMH

ICU Team’s Poster
Presented at Society
of Critical Medicine’s
Annual Congress
Shalan Stroud, Michelle Foss and Neil
Kelly from SMMC’s Intensive Care Unit
(ICU) had the opportunity to attend the
Society of Critical Medicine’s (SCCM)
annual congress in Phoenix, Arizona. The
conference is attended by world experts
in the field of critical care medicine.
The travel was supported through
a Foundation for SMMC grant after
their poster abstract submission was
selected to be presented at the congress.
The poster highlighted the work in the
ICU on the implementation of an early
mobility program. Utilizing Acute Physiology and Chronic
Health Evaluation (APACHE) data
collected on our ICU patients, the
team was able to show a reduction
in ventilator days and ICU length of
stay with an estimated cost savings
of $828,000 in the year following the
implementation. This work was based
on some of SCCM’s 2013 guidelines,
highlighting the importance of
mobilizing even the sickest of patients
because the detrimental effects of bed
rest are numerous. Both early mobility
and sepsis are targeted initiatives
not only here at SMMC but also at
Adventist Health System (AHS) of
which SMMC has been integrally
engaged. AHS was highlighted in the
opening ceremony as a critical partner
with SCCM.
Delivering compassionate care was a
repeated theme heard at the congress.
It is also at the root of all we do in
healthcare at SMH.

Above and Beyond
Jo-Anne Briscoe
CorporateCare Marketing
Jo-Anne came in on her day off to
help clean the clinic. Jo-Anne is an
amazing asset to our team and her
actions continually exemplify going
the extra mile.
Holly Martin
Cami Graves
Central Distribution
I called Central Distribution for some
items we desperately needed. Cami
was very polite and quick to help. She
didn’t know where to stock the items
in the anesthesia workroom so she
left me a note and neatly stacked the
items on my desk. Cami made my day
by being so attentive to our urgent
request. She is a great team player.
Becky Davis
Courteney Hartman and
Chelsea Hahn
Progressive Care Unit
Courtney and Chelsea came in on
their day off to cheer up a patient.
They are great nurses.
Peggy O’Toole
Maria Landreth
PACU
Maria is an incredible facilitator and
fellow associate. When we had an
unexpected pediatric admission, I
called her because our manager
was out of town. Not only did Maria
field multiple phone calls, she also
organized a plan for the night. She
always goes the extra mile for the unit
and we are lucky to have her on our
team.

Abby arranged for some comic books

Karen Harris
Faith Naccarato
Cardiac Care Unit
We had the pleasure of having Faith

but Faith was very upbeat, eager to
learn and even offered to take an

the extra mile to help us.
Melanie Lehman
Lorie Reimer
Materials Management
Lorie is always a great resource
when the Wound Care Center
needs equipment or specialty
patient supplies. Recently, I needed
information to set up pricing for a
new product. Lorie formatted the
requested information into a useable
document and took time to explain
it to me so I could make informed
decisions that benefit SMH and
our patients. I appreciate the great
customer service that Lorie provides.
Cindy Ambrose
Lorrena Rodabaugh
Early Learning Center
Lorrena does a wonderful job
taking photos of the children in her
classroom and providing them for
families. I was wanting some recent
photos of my son. When I could
not find them on the ELC Shutterfly
website, I called Lorrena for help. She
took time to make a CD for me with
all the photos she had of my son. I
know this took a lot of time and effort
on her part. I am so grateful to have
these photos.

Brittany Slavens
Heart & Neuro Vascular Unit
We had a patient who was very upset

Karen is a friendly and hardworking associate. Nearly every
day, she handles tasks that are
