Sydney Writers Festival panel: What’s making
headlines today and the changing nature of journalism
Published:03/05/2016
The Kaldor Centre's Madeline Gleeson will join Judith Whelan, editor of The Sydney Morning Herald,
SMH journalists and Bosnian-American writer Aleksandar Hemon to hear their take on what’s making
headlines today and the changing nature of journalism.
Madeline specialises in international human rights and refugee law, with a focus on state
responsibility, offshore processing and the protection of children. She has extensive experience
working with forcibly displaced people around the world, including asylum seekers, refugees,
stateless people, trafficked persons, economic migrants and people displaced by land grabbing in
Asia and South Africa. Madeline previously worked with UNHCR in Geneva, and is a John Monash
scholar. She is the author of Offshore: Behind the Wire on Manus and Nauru, a new book exploring
the reality of Australia’s offshore processing regime for asylum seekers in the Pacific.
