“✩✩✩✩ Four young Sydney players who have taken to improvisation like birds to flying” Sydney Morning Herald In February 2008, four friends from Sydney started improvising together for fun in a little terrace house in Darlinghurst. What emerged from those evenings, was a new string quartet …“The NOISE”. FBi Radio describes them as “fantastic classical musicians… a million miles away from classical music”. Think: Kronos Quartet meets Radiohead meets The Necks. Their instruments plug into amplifiers and their ‘compositions’ are spontaneous improvised creations. To hear The NOISE live at one of their improvised shows, is to hear (in real time) a new piece of music being born, to witness four musicians simultaneously compose a brand new work, on the spot, and to experience a unique world of sound and emotion erupt from the place where classical music, alternative rock, jazz, world music, sound art and the avant-‐garde collide. Their recorded work is created the same way (spontaneously and in one take) and should be listened to in the same frame of mind as a live performance. The NOISE’s music is inspired by a musical pantheon that includes John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Reich, Radiohead, Ravi Shankar, Shostakovich, Stockhausen, Messiaen, Xenakis, Bach, Bill Frisell… and such local Aussie notables as The Necks, Judy Bailey, Synergy, Taikoz, The Splinter Orchestra, Sculthorpe, Edwards, Barton, Riley Lee and Georges Lentz. They are also deeply influenced by the Australian landscape and its sounds. The NOISE’s members are all classical music graduates who have worked with the likes of ACO, MSO, The German Radio Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony, Ensemble Offspring, William Barton, Judy Bailey, The Splinter Orchestra, Monsieur Camembert, CODA, Taikoz, DJ Spooky and Joanna Newsom. Their music has been broadcast on ABC Classic FM, ABC Radio National, 2MBS, FBi, and Eastside Radio. James Eccles (violist and manager) holds a Graduate Certificate in Arts Management. In addition to their improvisations, The NOISE also works with composers such as Gerorges Lentz.
