They will find that internships, overseas exposure and real-life projects in close collaboration with the industry make up the core of their learning journey. 03 I poly education How do poly students learn? At the heart of a poly education is applying what is learnt in classrooms to real-world situations. Hence, Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) students are exposed to a variety of applied and experiential learning approaches that are aided by technology. In addition to about 25 to 30 hours of lectures, tutorials and workshops per week, they will be exposed to industry-based projects and workplace internships. Ranging from six weeks to a year, these workplace internships let students put their learning into practice. What else is unique to an NP education? At NP, every student gets the chance to go on at least one overseas stint during their three years here. The overseas exposure could come in the form of an internship, immersion, exchange programme or community service trip. What’s more, students are encouraged to look beyond their field of study with an array of almost 80 interdisciplinary modules to choose from. Accounting for 15 to 20 percent of their curriculum hours, these modules cover the major areas of Communication, Entrepreneurship, Life Skills, Media & the Arts, and Science & Technology. Clockwise from top: • Our InfoComm Technology students working on 3D animation projects at top-notch animation studios • Business & Accountancy students interning at Lufthansa Cargo • NP Scholars on a liberal arts programme in California “Employers say the poly-university route is the best combination... the three years in poly would equip the youngsters with the basic technical and practical know-how, and two or three more years at university would give them the theoretical and conceptual knowledge.” The Sunday Times 18 March 2007 poly life - what your student can expect I 04 What is the learning environment like? All NP students get to learn in a totally wireless campus. They can log on to the Mobile eLearning (MeL) platform to review class schedules, hand in assignments, communicate with lecturers and undertake research. They also get to enjoy hands-on learning in state-of-the-art facilities that include multimedia, animation and broadcast studios as well as research laboratories and technology centres. What’s more, the open campus environment at NP nurtures an entrepreneurial spirit amongst students. An innovation incubator called Ideawerkz, schemes such as EnterpriZe! and platforms such as EntrepreneursConnect@NP nurture a pro-enterprise spirit among our student community beyond the requirements of a set curriculum. How about opportunities for further education? More and more NP students are going places, with their diplomas serving as a gateway to further education. In fact, 63% of Ngee Ann Poly graduates pursue a university education either locally or abroad within five years of graduation, and 52% do so immediately after graduation or National Service. Furthermore, getting a degree from a renowned foreign university is possible right here on campus, with advanced standing and subsidised fees for our graduates. The degree pathways available at Ngee Ann Poly include: • • • B.Eng in Marine Technology (Honours) with the University of Newcastle, UK B.Sc in Early Childhood Education Studies & Leadership with Wheelock College, USA Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Producing with Chapman University, USA What about job prospects for poly graduates? If your student decides to join the workforce soon after graduation, he or she will be glad to know that polytechnic graduates are well sought-after by both public and private sector employers. 05 I poly education Helping Your Student Secure A Spot @ NP “How do I rank my choices to be sure of getting a spot in my dream course?” “Do I stand a chance if my aggregate does not meet the past year’s COP?” These are just two of the questions that students frequently ask. Read on for practical tips you can share with your students on how to maximise their chances of getting into the course of their choice via the JAE & JPSAE. Step 1 Identify the NP courses they qualify for Students will receive Form A from their secondary schools on the day that the GCE ‘O’ Level results are officially announced. Here’s how you can help your students make sense of it. Subject code and the grade they got for that subject. Their aggregate for poly courses. For example, the aggregate for Businessrelated courses (ELR2B2-B) is 15, for Science & Technology courses (ELR2B2-C) is 15, and for Design courses (ELR2B2-D) is 15. The net aggregate is calculated by deducting CCA bonus points. The course codes beginning with the letter “N” are the Ngee Ann Poly courses that they can apply for. Refer to the JAE Booklet to find out which NP diplomas the course codes represent. In this case, N45 stands for Ngee Ann’s Diploma in Business Studies. helping your student secure a spot @ NP I 06 Step 2 Maximise the 12 choices In the JAE application, students are given 12 choices. However, if they do not stack them wisely, they might end up not getting any of their choices. Here are some tips on how your student can maximise his or her choices. Let’s use the example of John, whose net aggregate is 12. His choices are indicated below. FIRST 4 CHOICES 1st choice: Course A 2nd choice: Course B 3rd choice: Course C 4th choice: Course D COP 10 11 12 12 BE PASSIONATE and list courses he or she is most interested in NEXT 4 CHOICES 5th choice: Course E 6th choice: Course F 7th choice: Course G 8th choice: Course H COP 13 13 12 14 BE PRUDENT and list courses he or she is keen on and is likely to get into JOHN’S TOP 4 CHOICES EXPLAINED: JOHN’S NEXT 4 CHOICES EXPLAINED: John put Course A as his 1st choice even though he did not meet last year’s Cut-off Point (COP) for that course. This is because he based his first few choices on his passion. If there are vacancies in Course A, the system will give him his 1st choice. But if he is discouraged by last year’s COP and does not list Course A at all, he will miss the opportunity to get into it altogether! John’s 5th to 8th choices are courses he is interested in and stands a good chance of getting into since his net aggregate is close to their COP last year. Even if another student, Jane, who has a net aggregate of 14, ranks any of these courses as her 1st choice, John will be considered first because his net aggregate is better than Jane’s. What does this mean for your student? What does this mean for your student? Your student shouldn’t hesitate to rank his or her favourite courses among his or her top four choices. This is even if your student’s net aggregate falls outside last year’s Cut-off Point (COP) as COPs are only a guide and may vary each year. For your student’s next four choices, he or she should choose courses that he or she has an interest in, and stands a good chance of getting into. As posting is based on merit, your student will stand a higher chance of getting into a particular course than someone with a less favourable net aggregate score. So, is posting based on merit or ranking of courses? One question we are often asked is whether the order of listing down choices affects a student’s chances of getting into a particular course. Selection is based first on merit, followed by choice order. This means that applicants with better aggregates will be considered for admission first, even if they have indicated the course lower on their choice list than someone else with a worse aggregate. This is why your student shouldn’t hesitate to put courses he or she is very keen on among his or her top choices. As long as your student also includes courses he or she clearly qualifies for among the 12 choices, he or she stands a good chance of getting into NP. 07 I poly education Step 2 Maximise the 12 choices LAST 4 CHOICES 9th choice: Course I 10th choice: Course J 11th choice: Course K 12th choice: Course L COP 15 16 17 19 Step 3 Explore other routes BE SURE and list courses your student is positive he or she can get into JOHN’S LAST FEW CHOICES EXPLAINED: John has included a few less competitive courses he easily qualifies for. This should guarantee him a place at Ngee Ann Poly. What does this mean for your student? Your student should include less competitive courses which he or she can clearly qualify for. Remember to fill up all 12 choices even if your student is really confident of getting into his or her desired course! To increase his or her chances of getting a course, a student should consider other options aside from the JAE. If your student’s aggregate does not meet last year’s Cut-off Point (COP) for his or her favourite course, he or she should also consider applying through JPSAE. This will fully maximise his or her chances of getting into that course. When applying through the JPSAE, a student should still apply through the JAE and rank his or her desired course as the top choice because the JPSAE selection panel will usually take that as an indication of interest in the course. “ I first heard about the JPSAE through a friend. So when I didn’t meet the Cut-off Point for NP’s Psychology & Community Services course, I thought of giving the JPSAE a try as the strong CCA achievements I had in Secondary School could help me get into NP. During the JPSAE interview, the interviewees were interested in my time as President of the Dance Ensemble, and our Gold achievement at the Singapore Youth Festival. JPSAE can help students like me who badly want to get into a course they’re really keen on. The best thing is that JPSAE doesn’t only look at academic achievements. It takes into account special talent and achievements in Secondary School too. Jesca Ho Formerly from CHIJ St Joseph’s Convent Diploma in Psychology & Community Services ” absolutely ngee ann I 08 Absolutely Ngee Ann Why is Ngee Ann Polytechnic the top choice for bright, ambitious teens who know what they want in life? Hear it from our students and alumni, whose stories appeared in The Straits Times Saturday Special Report, Top Grades & Poly’s Our First Choice, on 10 April 2010. NP Biotechnology alumni Ron Ng and Soong Jun Wei, who were the first poly students to be accepted into medical school here in 2007: [Ron] had qualified for JC with an O-level score of 10, but decided to focus on his passion for biology as “being in a JC would mean having to take other subjects as well”. FROM POLY TO IMPERIAL COLLEGE TO JOHNS HOPKINS “You see how everything you are learning has relevance to the real world” NP Biotechnology alumnus Dr Lindi Tan, who graduated from Imperial College with first-class honours in Biochemistry, then did her PhD in Public Health at Johns Hopkins University: She fell in love with the biological sciences when she was studying at Tanjong Katong Secondary School. After scoring six O-level distinctions, she enrolled at Ngee Ann. “It’s not that unusual for top students to opt for the polytechnic route. I had polytechnic classmates with near-perfect O-level scores. “If students know which field they wish to pursue as a career, entering a polytechnic would give them an edge over junior college students as the hands-on experience obtained during laboratory training and industry attachment helps immensely,” she says. He had his heart set on becoming a doctor and made medicine his only choice in his university application, confident that his industrial attachments at FROM POLY TO NUS polyclinics and MEDICINE hospitals would give “Industry him an edge. attachments give us the edge” 09 I poly education NP Early Childhood Education 2010 top graduate Wah Chia Ling, who stopped her Accountancy degree course at university four years ago in order to enrol in Ngee Ann Polytechnic: Ngee Ann seemed to be the answer, especially since she could go on to a degree with Boston’s Wheelock College, a top institution brought in by the Singapore Government to run degree programmes in early childhood education in partnership with Ngee Ann. In 2007, she enrolled in the early childhood diploma course and this year she graduated top of her class of 170 students with an almost perfect GPA of 3.99. “Some people may think I am crazy to leave an IP school for a poly FROM POLY TO WHEELOCK COLLEGE TO STUDY EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION but I had made up my mind what I wanted to do – to be a counsellor” “It gave me a direct path to realise my dream” Second-year Psychology & Community Services student N Balakumaran, who left the Integrated Programme at a top junior college to join Ngee Ann Polytechnic: The articulate 18-year-old, who is now in Year 2 at Ngee Ann Poly, is doing well, with a GPA of 3.67. The highest possible score is 4. “The poly system requires a lot of independent study and self initiative. It suits me better.” He adds: “I am doing well because I am doing something that I really like.” absolutely ngee ann I 10 FROM POLY TO CANNES FILM FESTIVAL “Well-rounded education helped shape me as a filmmaker” NP Film, Sound & Video alumnus Anthony Chen, who was the first Singaporean filmmaker to win an award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in France: The 25-year-old, who is touted to be Singapore’s next Eric Khoo, now has three award-winning films under his belt. He credits Ngee Ann with laying the foundation for him as a filmmaker. “The education was a well-rounded one that focused on various crafts of filmmaking – cinematography, editing, writing, sound. “It helped shape me as a filmmaker during my formative years. And it definitely reaffirmed my decision to pursue film directing as a career.” 11 I poly education Frequently Asked Questions Time and time again, we hear the same questions from worried ‘O’ level students and their parents. This chapter provides answers to some of these frequently asked questions. frequently asked questions I 12 If I fail my ‘O’ Level English, can I apply for admission to Ngee Ann Poly? If your student missed meeting the minimum English Language requirement by one grade, but obtained distinctions in Mathematics and a relevant subject, he or she can apply for conditional admission through the Direct Admissions Exercise (DAE). However, there is no conditional admission for the following courses: • Advertising & Public Relations • Arts Business Management • Business & Social Enterprise • Business Studies • Child Psychology & Early Education • Chinese Media & Communication • Chinese Studies • Digital Visual Effects • Early Childhood Education • Film, Sound & Video • International Business • Mass Communication • Psychology & Community Services • Tourism & Resort Management What is the Joint Polytechnic Special Admissions Exercise’s (JPSAE) definition of special talent and the selection criteria for admission adopted by NP? Your student can be considered for admission under the JPSAE if he or she fulfils the criteria in either (a) or (b). (a)Demonstrate good intellect or strong passion/aptitude through: • Work attachments; or • Sustained involvement in projects; or • Outstanding performance in competitions like the National Interschool Cross Country race; or • Other relevant activities and involvements (b) Possess exceptional talent in areas such as leadership, community service, entrepreneurship, sports and arts. The JAE Form A states that admission to the courses is based on merit followed by order of choices. Are there any exceptions? Yes, the exception is for Ngee Ann Poly’s Diploma in Health Sciences (Nursing) course. Applicants who put Health Sciences (Nursing) as their first choice will be given priority consideration, subject to vacancies and meeting eligibility requirements. 13 I poly education Programmes for Teachers & Students Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) has packaged varied flagship events and enrichment programmes for your students.
