JOINT MESSAGE BY CHAIRMAN AND PRINCIPAL
2015 was a special year as Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) joined the nation in
celebrating Singapore’s Golden Jubilee. Along with the SG50 celebrations, we
took great strides in spearheading new initiatives that support lifelong education,
skills mastery and active citizenry, among others.
SkillsFuture Initiatives
The national SkillsFuture movement has provided an excellent platform for
educational institutions to step up collaborations with industry partners and other
key stakeholders. NP was appointed the coordinator for these three sectors:
Accountancy & Financial Services, Offshore and Marine Engineering and Power
Engineering. This saw NP launching various Earn and Learn Programmes and
enhanced internships to help polytechnic students and fresh graduates get a head
start in their careers while creating a talent pipeline for the sectors. As a result,
three new Specialist Diplomas and one Advanced Diploma in these sectors have
been developed. The first intake of the Specialist Diploma in Marine Production
commenced its class in October 2015, while the Specialist Diplomas in Electrical
Design & Operation, and Marine Design, as well as the Advanced Diploma in
Accountancy will be offered from September 2016.
NP also inked a Memorandum of Understanding with some 27 companies to
launch the Industry Mentors’ Network (IMN). Through linking our students with
industry practitioners, the IMN enables them to gain career advice and build
industry networking skills right from their first year.
With Education & Career Guidance (ECG) being a key element of SkillsFuture, NP
also enhanced its ECG curriculum and training. A core programme for every
student, the structured 60-hour ECG curriculum will be delivered over a span of
three years. Some 460 lecturers have also been trained as ECG advisors to
provide mentorship and career counselling throughout the students’ learning
journey at NP.
During the year, our CET Academy also rolled out several new part-time and
modular courses that cater for the needs of adult learners and industries,
particularly those in the growth sectors. Through skills mastery, working
professionals can look forward to better career advancement prospects. One
example is the Certificate in Bridging Studies for Enrolled Nurses (CBSEN) that
prepares trainees for a nursing diploma that will qualify them as Registered
Nurses. In the early childhood sector that faces manpower shortage, we worked
with industry partners to ramp up training and recruitment efforts to expand the
talent pool.
New Service-Learning Pedagogy
Recognising that our students will face an increasingly volatile and evolving
environment, we seek to prepare them using a three-pronged approach –
developing a love for purposeful learning in our students, equipping them with 21st
century competencies and nurturing a big-hearted spirit in them. To this end, we
introduced a new pedagogy in Service-Learning. Starting from the new academic
year in April 2016, Service-Learning will be infused into the core curriculum across
all our diploma courses. Through the Service-Learning modules, students will be
encouraged to use their course skills and knowledge to benefit society. We hope
that this will imbue a sense of purposeful learning in our students, thus making
them more engaged in their studies. At the same time, we seek to inculcate active
citizenry, instilling in them the importance of empathy, values and civic
responsibility.
Nurturing Entrepreneurship
In 2015, NP consolidated all innovation and enterprise efforts under The Sandbox
(TSB). A new Kickstart Fund was introduced, offering up to $5,000 to finance
business ideas. Also set up were the Maker’s Academy to encourage innovative
product prototyping; The Incubator, featuring hot-desking stations and meeting
rooms for start-ups; and an Entrepreneurs-in-Residence programme that provides
a platform for student entrepreneurs to be mentored by NP alumni entrepreneurs.
NP also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Action Community for
Entrepreneurship (ACE). This will see the establishment of an ACE Student
Chapter to facilitate student-driven entrepreneurial activities while also enabling
NP students to intern at the 500 start-ups that are part of ACE’s community.
In March 2016, we piloted a new Global Entrepreneurship Internship Programme
(GEIP), where the first batch of 10 NP students were attached to eight start-ups in
Silicon Valley. The GEIP is aimed at giving students who demonstrate an
entrepreneurial ambition an opportunity to experience start-up life at leading
innovation hubs around the world.
Staff and Campus Development
NP places much emphasis on creating a nurturing environment for staff. Staff
Councils were initiated to provide a platform for staff to share ideas on how to
make NP a great place to work. During the year under review, four Staff Councils
were formed to tackle issues such as ageing and disability awareness. A new twoday programme, Connections, was also developed, to help staff discover and
enhance workplace relationships.
The third Employee Engagement Survey (EES) was held in May/June 2015, with a
90% response rate, the highest to date. It was heartening to see significant
improvements in all the categories evaluated when compared to the previous
surveys held in 2008 and 2011.
There were also several refreshing changes in the physical environment of NP.
2015 saw the completion of our new Aerospace Hub at Block 46 as well as the
renovated blocks at the Mechanical Engineering Division and the CET Academy.
Another significant development was the new Green Mark (Platinum) certified
Block 22 with its 1,100-seater food court, Sports Hall and student lounges.
Meanwhile, upgrading continues for the School of Business & Accountancy and
Administration Building.
Achievements and Appreciation
We are gratified that our students and graduates continue to excel in diverse fields.
On the academic front, over 80 recent graduates were offered prestigious
scholarships for their degree pursuits in Singapore and abroad. More than 1,000
NP students also received study awards and scholarships in recognition of their
sterling academic performance.
Beyond academic achievement, our students have also made their mark in other
areas. For example, four Engineering Science students won the first prize in the
Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Competition for using Radio Frequency Identification
(RFID) technology to help the visually-impaired use public transportation
independently. Two graduates from the School of Life Sciences & Technology also
won the HSBC/NYAA Youth Environmental Award for their "green" efforts.
We are proud that our students and staff have big hearts too, and have given back
to the community both in time and in kind. We raised over $225,000 for the needy
through activities such as the annual Arts Fiesta and the Fast-A-Meal Campaign,
to name a few. Our staff also initiated their own community service projects for
various local and overseas voluntary welfare organisations.
All these accomplishments of NP would not be possible without the dedication of
our staff, and we would like to express our appreciation to them. We would also
like to thank members of our Council, Advisory Committees, our industry and
academic partners, our donors as well as the parents of our students for being our
partners in education.
2016 and beyond
As we usher in a new future that will bring both challenges and opportunities, we
will continue to equip our students with industry-relevant skills and help them
navigate the new economy. Besides enhancing their career progression pathways
through the SkillsFuture movement, NP will be leveraging technology to enhance
the teaching and learning experience, tapping into Singapore’s Smart Nation
platform. This will also mean providing staff with opportunities to enhance their
competencies so that they will be well placed to equip our students for a future
economy.
We look forward to the continued support of all our stakeholders to make NP a
better place to learn and work in 2016 and beyond.

helping students and fresh graduates to enhance and deepen their capabilities, we

FORGING NEW LEARNING PLATFORMS
As an educational institution committed to meeting Singapore’s manpower needs,
Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) works closely with our industry partners to ensure that
our courses and students remain relevant and well sought-after. Such
collaborations open doors to more learning opportunities for our students. Students
also get to put their skills and knowledge to test, while gaining insights into latest
technologies and practices in the industry. Some highlights are as follows:
NP partnered local startup Glints to
develop an online career discovery
platform, which allows students and
alumni to apply for internships and job
opportunities. Users can build their
profiles on NP@Glints which will use
its skills identification feature to unlock
a list of internship and job
opportunities that fit their fields of study and preferences.
NP signed an MOU with Action Community for Entrepreneurship in March 2016
to nurture the next generation of entrepreneurs. As part of the MOU, the ACE
Student Chapter will be established to facilitate student-driven entrepreneurial
activities. NP students can also look forward to interning at one of the 500
startups that are part of ACE’s community. NP and ACE will also co-organise
activities such as Campus Life Hackathons where participants will brainstorm
solutions to solve campus issues and ideas to improve the campus life
experience.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by NP’s School of
Engineering (SoE), Lions Befrienders Service Association (Singapore), Thye
Hua Kwan Moral Charities and NTUC Health Cooperative Limited to develop
five sets of RoboCoach systems for senior activity centres. A robot exercise
instructor, RoboCoach is programmed to coach the elderly in performing arm
exercises, in a fun and engaging way.
SoE has been working with the Singapore Police Force to jointly develop
security and safety innovation projects in the past. Both parties signed a new
agreement in November 2015 to continue the collaboration in the same
direction.
Three research collaboration agreements that were signed with Meiban
International Pte Ltd, Nippecraft Ltd and TGI Technology Pte Ltd pave the way
for students from the School of Design & Environment to jointly collaborate on
product design projects.

COLLABORATION ON SKILLSFUTURE INITIATIVES
During the year, we contributed to the national SkillsFuture movement as Sector
Coordinators for Accountancy and Financial Services, Power Engineering, and
Offshore and Marine Engineering. Here are the initiatives that were implemented:
Led by the School of Business
& Accountancy, NP inked an
agreement with 16 accounting
companies and financial
institutions to provide
enhanced internships and the
SkillsFuture Earn-and-Learn
Programme (ELP) for
polytechnic students and
graduates. Through the ELP, polytechnic graduates will get to acquire work
experience and professional skills while pursuing further study options part-time,
through a structured work-study pathway. Offered by NP in collaboration with the
Singapore Accountancy Commission, polytechnic graduates who successfully
complete the 18-month programme will attain an Advanced Diploma in
Accountancy. This certification offers an alternative pathway for polytechnic
graduates and part-time students to become Chartered Accountants of
Singapore, without first having to obtain degree qualifications. Upon completion
of the ELP, they will be eligible to enrol in the Singapore Qualification
Programme to qualify as Chartered Accountants of Singapore.
The Electrical Engineering Division of NP coordinated the signing of an MOU
with 17 key energy sector partners and four post-secondary institutions to attract
more talent to the power engineering sector. Under the MOU, polytechnic and
Institute of Technical Education (ITE) electrical engineering students will embark
on enhanced internships with focused learning outcomes and clear job scopes
for Year 2 Electrical Engineering students. They will also be matched with
industry mentors who will guide them. In addition, polytechnic graduates who
join the power engineering sector will be able to deepen their skills and enjoy
better career prospects through two post-graduate diplomas as part of the
SkillsFuture Earn-and-Learn Programme. NP will launch a Specialist Diploma in
Electrical Design and Operation in October 2016, while Singapore Polytechnic
will offer the Advanced Diploma in Power Engineering from April 2016.
Eight key players of the Offshore & Marine Engineering sector from the industry
and post-secondary education institutions signed an MOU to facilitate
SkillsFuture initiatives for the sector. Led by NP’s Mechanical Engineering
Division, the sector unveiled several new initiatives such as the SkillsFuture
Earn-and-Learn Programme in Offshore & Marine Engineering for fresh
polytechnic graduates, and enhanced internships for polytechnic and ITE
students. NP currently offers the Specialist Diploma in Marine Production, while
the Specialist Diploma in Marine Design will be offered in October 2016.
Thanks to the new Industry Mentors’ Network (IMN) programme, first-year
students from NP, Singapore Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic will have
industry professionals assigned to them as mentors. These mentors will provide
career advice and opportunities for students to gain insights into the industries
and careers they are interested in. This programme is aligned with the
objectives to strengthen Education and Career Guidance under SkillsFuture. NP,
which initiated this programme, will start with 850 students from eight diploma
courses such as Advertising & Public Relations and Information Technology.
More than 200 mentors from at least 20 companies are part of the IMN
programme. The companies – ranging from multinational corporations to local
enterprises – inked an MOU with the polytechnics in December 2015.

> Creating Innovative Solutions
CREATING INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS
Our students also get to work with community partners and public agencies to
develop social innovations that solve real-world problems. Here are some
examples:
Three Mechanical Engineering students came up with an idea to improve the life
of bedridden patients. Inspired by the IV-drip stand that is usually found next to
hospital beds, the students invented a portable hair washing device. This can be
attached to a wheelchair and taken to the patient, who can use it to wash his or
her hair. The inspiration for the device came during a visit to All Saints Nursing
Home, when the students noticed the challenges faced by healthcare workers.
Xuan, a robotic exercise instructor developed by a group of Electrical
Engineering students, has been deployed to the Lions Befrienders Senior
Activity Centre. Its novel way of teaching the elderly to keep fit also caught the
attention of foreign media such as CNN and CNBC. Looking ahead, five more
robots are being developed, and a more advanced version of Xuan is in the
works.
A multi-disciplinary team consisting of students
from the Environmental & Water Technology,
Electronic & Computer Engineering and Product
Design & Innovation courses developed Aqon, an
aquatic device that could save fish farmers in
Singapore millions of dollars in future. With the
Aqon, fish farmers will be able to monitor key
variables and analyse trends that will help them
spot potential algae blooms.
Students from the School of InfoComm
Technology worked with the National Kidney Foundation to develop an app that
bridges the language barrier between nurses and patients. Using voice
recordings of native speakers, the app provides translations of medical phrases
from English to Mandarin, Malay, Cantonese and Hokkien. It also allows the
patient to provide simple feedback by selecting from common phrases and
pictures on the app.
Two Engineering Science (ES) students designed a bionic robot arm that can
replace human workers operating in dangerous environments, such as defusing
bombs or carting away toxic waste. The bionic robot arm won the
"Encouragement Award" for the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors’ Award 2016, and
the "Outstanding Technology Team Award" for the Ngee Ann Student Excellence
Award 2016.
Two other ES students developed a mind-reading robot on wheels that is
controlled by the user’s brainwaves. The robot moves when the user is in a
relaxed frame of mind, and changes directions when the user blinks. The robot
can be adapted for the physically disabled who are wheelchair-bound.
Four Automation & Mechatronic Systems (AMS) students created M.A.T.A.R, a
multi-purpose all terrain autonomous robot, to help police officers conduct site
investigations remotely.
Another AMS student, Wang Jinyu, developed an Eye-gesture Controlled
Wheelchair that allows patients with limb disabilities to be independently mobile.
A motorised wheelchair is connected to a laptop and an eye-tracking device.
With a customised graphical user interface, patients can view onscreen
directional arrows on the laptop. Using the arrows as a guide, patients move
their eyes in a specific direction – emulating a joystick control – to steer the
wheelchair.
Product Design & Innovation

Voyar, an assistive walker with a foldup seat to help children with cerebral
palsy stand and walk. Speciallydesigned springs located under the
seat help the children in standing up.
If they accidentally fall backwards, the
seat unfolds and "catches" them. Cai
Jin worked on the prototype with
XentiQ Pte Ltd, a local product
development and manufacturing firm,
as well as the Cerebral Palsy Alliance
Singapore. Voyar can be used by
children aged between 5 to 12 years
who suffer from varying degrees of celebral palsy.

NEW PEDAGOGY
To encourage purposeful learning and active citizenry, NP introduced a new
signature pedagogy across our 49 courses. Launched in March 2016, the new
Service-Learning pedagogy aims at leveraging students’ discipline skills and
knowledge to meet identified community needs.
Every student from the April 2016 cohort onwards will be exposed to at least one
course module that highlights Service-Learning as a key pedagogy. One example
of such a module is Managing Disabilities for Diploma in Psychology Studies
where students will get to interact with people with disabilities and design activities
to cater to their needs. Besides gaining a broader appreciation for their discipline,
the initiative hopes to instill in students the importance of empathy and encourage
them to serve beyond themselves.

CURRICULUM DESIGN & DELIVERY
NP regularly updates and develops new course offerings to ensure they are
aligned with industry needs.
Two new specialisation tracks have
been introduced for students in the
Diploma in Early Childhood Education.
From April 2016, students can choose
either the Early Literacy Track or the
Early Childhood Teaching Track in
their final year. Similar to students in
the Diploma in Child Psychology &
Early Education course, they will also
get to go on the two-week Global
Education Trip to Australia or an Asian destination.
Students in the Diploma in Chinese Studies can now choose from one of three
pathways: Education Track, Business Chinese Track or Chinese Early
Childhood Track. The Education Track caters to those who are keen on
becoming an educator, while students who choose the Business Chinese Track
will gain skills in areas such as news writing, advertising, and Chinese business
communication and translation. Students interested in becoming a pre-school
Chinese Language teacher can take up the Chinese Early Childhood Teaching
Track.
The Diploma in Digital Visual Effects (DVFX) has been renamed Diploma in
Visual Effects (VFX). The VFX’s revamped curriculum ensures VFX students get
a solid grounding in core principles of visual communication, special effects and
advanced post-production services.
The School of Engineering launched a new Diploma Plus Programme (DPP) in
Satellite Technology which provides students with a foundation in space
technology. Students will have the opportunity to work on a multidisciplinary
project, visit the Satellite Research Centre and attend lectures at NTU. The DPP
is open to engineering students from these four diplomas: Engineering Science,
Electrical Engineering, Electronic & Computer Engineering and Mechanical
Engineering.

SKILLSFUTURE AT NP
In support of the national SkillsFuture movement to ensure our students and
graduates get a head start in their chosen careers, we launched several
programmes during the year under review.
Education and Career Guidance
An enhanced Education and Career Guidance (ECG) curriculum was rolled out
in April 2015 to help students make informed career choices right from the start.
The new ECG curriculum is a structured three-year programme spanning at
least 60 hours. It focuses on personal discovery, career and learning
exploration, and career management. A total of 460 lecturers across all
academic schools completed a training programme to prepare them for their
roles as ECG Advisors. Students will also be able to receive career guidance
from full-time ECG counsellors at NP’s Student Services Office.
Multiple Internships
A survey conducted in April 2015 showed that close to 60 per cent of about 900
students said they wanted to take on more internships. To cater to this, a new
initiative was launched in January 2016 that allows NP students and fresh
graduates to gain access to a diverse range of internships and graduate job
opportunities through the NP@Glints portal.
Earn and Learn Programmes
We continued to push for lifelong learning among our graduates and adult
learners. To this end, NP’s Continuing Education & Training (CET) Academy
worked with our faculties and industry partners to launch several SkillsFuture
Earn-and-Learn Programmes (ELPs). The ELPs allow fresh polytechnic
graduates to acquire work experience and professional skills through on-the-job
training as well as a structured programme, which will lead to either a Specialist
Diploma (12-month programme) or an Advanced Diploma (18-month
programme). NP currently offers the Specialist Diploma in Marine Production.
During the year in review, NP also announced the launch of the Advanced
Diploma in Accountancy for the Accountancy and Financial Services sector,
Specialist Diploma in Electrical Design & Operation for the Power Engineering
sector, and Specialist Diploma in Marine Design for the Offshore & Marine
Engineering sector. These programmes will be offered from September 2016.
Bridging Course for Enrolled
Nurses
A bridging course that allows enrolled
nurses to qualify as registered nurses
was launched in June 2015 with an
inaugural batch of 73 students. The
Certificate in Bridging Studies for
Enrolled Nurses (CBSEN) is a course
that enrolled nurses – who hold a
Nitec in Nursing from ITE – take before pursuing a diploma which will qualify
them as registered nurses. Previously, only Nitec holders with a grade point
average ranging from 2.8 to 3.0 were eligible to take the CBSEN. Now, enrolled
nurses with a lower GPA can qualify for the 16-week course if they have at least
three years of working experience and an employer testimonial.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP
During the year, NP stepped up its efforts to develop an entrepreneurship
ecosystem within the NP community to actively nurture a culture of innovation and
enterprise.
The Sandbox was launched in
May 2015 to consolidate NP’s
innovation and
entrepreneurship
development platforms. It is a
one-stop centre offering
support to NP’s budding
innovators and entrepreneurs
to get their ideas off the
ground. Among the initiatives
launched by The Sandbox are The Incubator, which features hot-desking
stations and meeting rooms. Startup companies can also attend mentoring
workshops and networking events with investors. They can build their prototypes
at the Makers’ Academy, which is equipped with tools such as a 3D printer,
leather craft tools and micro-mechanical machines.
NP held its first Alumni Entrepreneur Homecoming in September 2015 which
resulted in the formation of NP Founders Club comprising more than 80
members who are now easily able to stay connected with both NP as well as
with each other. In March 2016, The Sandbox also launched a commemorative
book, "Those Who Dared", to celebrate the entrepreneurial journeys of
successful NP alumni business owners.
In addition, five Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIR) were appointed to inspire and
groom student entrepreneurs. They are: Alvin Yap, CEO & Founder, Laku6;
Darran Nathan, CEO & Founder, Progeniq; Douglas Gan, Co-Founder, Vanity
Trove; Lynn Tan, Managing Director, Fusion Cosmetics; and Stanley Chia,
Managing Director, Envisage Education & Director, Cialfo. Every Wednesday
afternoon, one EIR will be at NP to mentor startups.
In November 2015, the six-month Global Entrepreneurship Internship
Programme (GEIP) was conceived to provide students with more real-world
immersion into entrepreneurship. Through the GEIP, students can experience
the realities of startup life at global leading innovation hubs. They will get the
opportunity to attend networking sessions organised by well-known incubators,
while learning how startups are run. The first batch of 10 GEIP students
commenced their internships at various startups in Silicon Valley in March 2016.
In future, there are plans to progressively roll out GEIP in other regions such as
Jakarta, China and Hong Kong.

enhances its learning spaces. We also continued to build on the capabilities of our
staff and implement initiatives to promote camaraderie and build a conducive work

As part of our Phase 7
campus redevelopment
exercise, Block 22 was
completed in April 2015. The
new building is Green Mark
Platinum certified and
comprises a 1,100-seater
food court, an indoor sports
hall, staff training and student
project rooms, as well as
lounging spaces for students.
There are three tennis courts at the rooftop. The Student Services Office is also
located in this building.
Under Phase 8 of campus rejuvenation, the Aerospace Hub at Block 46 was
opened in September 2015. It houses flight simulators, an aircraft hangar and an
air traffic control tower. There is also a dedicated area for students to work on
their projects and build a recreational aircraft. In addition, the Mechanical
Engineering Division which occupies blocks 37 and 47 also had its teaching and
learning facilities upgraded. At the same time, the CET Academy moved into the
refurbished Block 50, which boasts of a total of 39 classrooms. Over at blocks
52 and 53 where the School of Film and Media Studies and School of
Humanities & Social Sciences are located, the buildings were given a facade
facelift. The renovation also included the construction of an open vista and
vertical green walls.
Rejuvenation works for the Library and Administration Building at Block 1 started
in March 2016. At the same time, Block 72, which houses the School of
Business & Accountancy, commenced its upgrading programme. Both projects
will be completed in December 2016.
While the campus was being spruced up, exciting infrastructural developments
in the surroundings were also taking place. In December 2015, the NP
community welcomed the completion of the MRT Downtown Line 2 network
which provides them with more options to get to campus. Two MRT stations –
Beauty World and King Albert Park – are now located about a 10-minute walk
away from NP.
Staff Development
To create an inclusive and supportive workplace culture, Staff Councils were
introduced by NP to provide an avenue for staff to share ideas on how to
improve their work environment. For example, one of the ideas proposed by the
Staff Councils was to make NP more family-friendly. In response, the Staff
Councils worked with staff from the School of Design & Environment to design a
portable and private nursing station for breastfeeding mothers.
A series of lunchtime talks were held throughout the year for staff. Titled
DABAO, it was modelled after Brown Bag sessions where participants bring
along packed lunches for informal lunch meetings. Conducted by NP staff, the
talks covered topics ranging from creative thinking to leadership and events
management.
A new programme, Connections, was also developed for staff. Connections is a
two-day programme that aims to help staff discover and enhance workplace
relationships.

EXCELLING IN DIVERSE FIELDS
Our students were recognised for their efforts in various fields. Many of them have
received awards in the local and international arena.
Business Innovation & Entrepreneurship
Business & Financial Services student Eugene Yeo was crowned the overall
champion at the UOB-Kay Hian Singapore Inter-Polytechnic Real-Time
Investment & Trading Competition. The virtual investing and trading competition
allows students to apply different investment strategies in a safe environment.
Five students from the School of Business & Accountancy emerged as first
runners-up in the inaugural Star Interns Challenge, organised by Julian Lee &
Associates, an agency within Great Eastern Financial Advisers. The team was
tasked to develop a marketing plan for a new financial package, create a
company recruitment video and develop a strategy to promote corporate social
governance. Besides working closely with experienced financial planners, the
students also deepened their understanding of the insurance industry.
Environment
Environmental & Water Technology graduate
Tan Siok Hian and Landscape Design &
Horticulture graduate Justin Tan won the
HSBC/NYAA Youth Environmental Award for
their contributions to environmental efforts.
The pair embarked on a nine-day study trip to
the Acadia National Park in Maine, United
States, to assist on research into climate
change.
Students from the School of Life Sciences &
Chemical Technology were recognised for their eco-friendly inventions at
SembCorp Marine’s Green Wave Environmental Care Competition. Chemical &
Bimolecular Engineering students Celester Heng, Danuja Premnath and Lim
Leh Sze received the Commendation Award for proposing the use of the Hydrilla
plant to remove harmful nutrients from waterways. Another group of students
from the Diploma in Environmental & Water Technology received the
Encouragement Award for developing a way to recover bioplastics from food
waste.
Film, Media & Design
Students from the School of Film & Media Studies won several awards at
cINE65, a national short film competition. Mass Communication (MCM) student
Aloysius Lee’s Home Made swept the Best Overall Film, Best Screenplay and
Best Sound Design awards. Blk 401 and L’Amant by Film, Sound & Video
students also clinched Best Editing and Best Cinematography respectively.
MCM student Joseph Soh won the annual DJ competition 987 Star, which
searches for the "next voice and face" of the radio station most popular among
youths.
Product Design & Innovation student (PDI) Lim Li Xue was the first runner-up of
the IKEA Singapore’s Young Designer Award for her creation of a mirror which
doubles as a clock. PDI student Joey Tung also made it into the finals of the
competition.
Another PDI student, Muhamad Zulkifie bin Mohamed Shaffarulla won
international accolades for his creation, the Fokus Desk. He won two Bronze
awards at the A’Design Award & Competition and International Design Awards,
where he also received an honourable mention.
A team of students from the School of
Design & Environment won the Merit
Prize (Innovation) Award at the
inaugural Building Energy Efficiency
Solutions Students’ Competition,
organised by the Building and
Construction Authority. The students
proposed the use of video analytics
software with closed circuit televisions to monitor the occupancy in commercial
buildings. This information can be used to adjust the temperature of the air
conditioning in the building to achieve energy savings.
Chinese Media & Communication (CMC) students Zhu Zeliang and David Xu
clinched the championship and runner-up titles at the Third Global Chinese
Network Host Competition, co-organised by China National Radio and China
Mobile.
Destined to Love, a short film by five CMC students, won the Most Popular
Micro Film at the My Singapore Story Microfilm Competition. The competition
was organised by Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations,
Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre and Zaobao.com.
Science & Technology
Four Engineering Science students
won the first prize in the Samsung
Solve for Tomorrow Competition 2015
for developing EYEBUS, which
leverages RFID technology to help the
visually-impaired use public
transportation independently.
Information Technology students
Gordon Ng and Sur Syafiqah Binte
Rozaini won the Best Hewlett-Packard
Enterprise Hellion App at the Social Inventor Hackathon, co-organised by
Hewlett-Packard Enterprise and Social Innovation Park. The pair designed and
developed a platform to allow those with mobility restrictions to submit delivery
requests for items such as groceries easily.
Three Clean Energy Management students won a Commendation Award at the
Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors’ Award for developing an autonomous selfsustainable irrigation system.
Molecular Biotechnology students Chan Kah Ming and Pamela Kuan won the
best project award at the Polytechnic Science Research Programme for their
investigation and characterisation of an important protein produced by the
Chikungunya virus.
Sports & Arts
Our Ngee Ann athletes achieved a total of 20 gold, silver and bronze medals at
the 2015 SEA Games. They include Muahmmad Nur Alfian Juma’en’s hardfought gold in silat; golds in men’s and women’s floorball and netball; as well as
Zhang Jing Kang, Keith Teo and Tan Si Lie’s bronzes in archery and Ng Ming
Wei’s bronze in taekwondo.
At the 5th Singapore Inter-School
Diving Championships, the Diving
Club won three golds, three silvers
and three bronzes.
The Archery Club won one gold, five
silvers and three bronzes during the
NUS Indoor Archery Championship.
NP’s hockey team finished third overall at the Singapore Hockey Federation
National League 5 (Men’s).
At the 2015 POL-ITE games, the following sports groups excelled in their
respective categories: Netball (Champions), Water Polo (Champions), Women’s
Table Tennis (Second position), Taekwondo (Third position), Track & Field
(Second position), Men’s and Women’s Basketball (Second position), Women’s

SECURING SCHOLARSHIPS
Our students and graduates continue to secure prestigious scholarships. Some of
these are mentioned below:
A total of 16 students from the Aerospace Technology, Biomedical Engineering,
Biomedical Science, Engineering Science, Mechanical Engineering, Information
Technology courses won the A*STAR Science Award (Polytechnic). The award
is given to local polytechnic students who demonstrate strong aptitude and
interest in Math and Science to spur their passion in scientific research and
development.
Seven Engineering Science students were awarded the Defence Science
Organisation (DSO) Diploma Scholarship, which covers tuition fees and $2,500
allowance per year. They also score an internship at DSO before graduation.
Eight Marine & Offshore Technology (MOT) students received the ASMI-MOT
Scholarship, worth approximately $30,000, while two other MOT students
received the ASMI scholarship, worth $5,000 per annum.
Clean Energy Management student Soh Boon Yen received the BCA-Industry
Built Environment Diploma Scholarship from the Building and Construction
Authority.
Twenty students from the Information Technology, Information Security &
Forensics and Electronic & Computer Engineering courses secured the CSIT
Diploma Scholarship. The bond-free scholarship aims to nurture next-generation
information security specialists.
Four Information Security & Forensics and Information Technology students
received the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore’s iPoly scholarship.
It encompasses full tuition fees, a one-time laptop allowance, support for
courses and certifications, as well as overseas internships of up to six months.

University of Singapore, Singapore Management University and Singapore
University of Technology and Design, as well as various reputable private
organisations.
Molecular Biotechnology graduates Khong Zi Jian and Tan Qiao Wen, as well as
Biomedical Science graduate Eddy Tan, received the A*STAR Undergraduate
Scholarship.
Health Sciences (Nursing) graduate Lois Fong and Biomedical Laboratory
Technology graduate Toh Shao Wei were awarded the MOH Healthcare Merit
Scholarship. In addition, 10 graduates from various diplomas received the MOH
Healthcare Merit Award.

SHOWCASING EXPERTISE
To provide an excellent student learning experience, our staff continue to develop
innovative teaching methods and interact with the industry, particularly through
their own research efforts.
School of Film & Media Studies lecturer Michael Kam’s feature film, Domo
Arigato Mister Roketto, was selected for Singapore International Film Festival’s
Southeast Asian Film Lab.
Mass Communication lecturer Desmond Kon’s Singular Acts of Endearment
won the Silver Award under the Multicultural Fiction category at the 2015
Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPYs). The IPPYs honour the year’s best
independently published titles from around the world. His novel was also the
2016 Northeast winner at the USA Regional Excellence Book Awards in the
Adult Fiction category.
School of Engineering’s Electrical Engineering staff secured a $140,000 grant
from the Social Innovation Research Fund (SIRF) for developing an autonomous
gait tracking system. This system will be jointly developed with Khoo Teck Puat
Hospital’s senior consultants. In addition, they received another grant of $99,000
from SIRF for developing a humanoid robotic coach to help senior citizens
exercise.
A research paper on raising the profession, perception and prospection of
sustainable facilities management in Singapore by School of Design &
Environment lecturer Catherine Thoo was published in the International Journal
of Facility Management (Vol. 6, Issue 1, 2015).
School of InfoComm Technology lecturer Steven Ong was awarded GIAC
Security Essentials certification (GSEC). The Global Information Assurance
Certification (GIAC) validates the ability of practitioners in information security,
forensics and software security.
Dr Juliet Choo, a lecturer from the School of Humanities & Social Sciences, won
two Best Poster Awards for her projects at the Singapore Health & Biomedical
Congress 2015.
Staff from the School of Health Sciences – Dr Phang Chiew Hun, Hazel Lim and
Michelle Koh, together with St Luke’s Eldercare Ltd – delivered a presentation at
the 2015 Community Care Forum organised by the Agency for Integrated Care
Community Care. The presentation was on the depression level and quality of
life of the elderly.
In the area of sports, student development officer Saiyidah Aisyah snagged two
bronze medals in rowing during the 28th SEA Games. Aisyah also became the
first Singaporean rower to qualify for the Olympics, after finishing seventh overall
at the Asia and Oceania Continental Olympic Qualification Regatta in South
Korea.

ALUMNI MAKING THEIR MARK
We are proud that our alumni have continued to fly the NP flag high. Here are
some of their achievements:
Information Technology graduate Elliot Tan
was the winner at the Microsoft Office
Specialist World Championship held in
Dallas, Texas, in August. Representing
Singapore in the Microsoft Excel 2013
category, Elliot had to reproduce a given
Excel spreadsheet within 50 minutes using
his software and analytical skills. The 2015
graduate beat over 140 finalists from 47
countries to win the top prize.
Joshua Leong, a Business & Social
Enterprise graduate, was one of the four
Singaporeans selected to participate in the
Young Southeast Asian Leaders (YSEALI) Initiative Professional Fellows
Program (PFP). The five week experience – initiated by US President Barack
Obama – is for young people active in fields such as civic engagement and
managing non-governmental organisations. Joshua was a project and marketing
executive at Social Lab, which runs social enterprise, Dialogue in the Dark, at
NP.
Biomedical Engineering graduates Kenneth Teo and Chua Wang An beat over
100 teams to win the inaugural Hackathon@SG, organised by the Infocomm
Development Authority of Singapore. They proposed a wearable fitness tracking
device with back-end data analytics that identifies the type of exercise done and
provides performance metrics.
Dinner, a short film by five Chinese Media & Communication graduates,
received Gold Award in the Student Category for My Singapore Story Microfilm
Competition. The competition was organised by the Singapore Federation of
Chinese Clan Associations, Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre and
Zaobao.com.
Film, Sound & Video graduate Gladys Ng’s film, My Father After Dinner, won the
Best Singapore Short Film at the 26th Singapore International Film Festival.
Mass Communication (MCM) alumnus Jian Yang won the Media Person of the
Year title at the Singapore Media Awards in August 2015. He is the second
MCM graduate to win this prestigious award within three years. Karen Soo,
another MCM graduate, was also named Young Digital Planner of the Year at
the same ceremony.

A total of 1,316 students gained valuable exposure to different cultures and
learning environments as they went overseas on immersion programmes. Some of

Forty-four Business & Social

to Hong Kong as part of their
Project Management module
and overseas immersion
experience. Hosted by
Lingnan University, they
attended lectures on service
learning and global
citizenship. They also went on learning expeditions to social enterprises, New
Life Farm and Fantastic Kitchen, to better understand their operations. As part of
their project management module, they conducted health promotion workshops
for children, and a smartphone class and therapy workshop for the elderly. They
also went through an elderly simulation programme to help them empathise with
the struggles faced by senior citizens.
For 37 students from the School of InfoComm Technology who went on an
immersion programme to China, the highlight of their visit was a tour of
technology giant Lenovo at its principal facility in Beijing. They were inspired by
Lenovo’s growth from a home-grown Chinese company to a global industry
leader. They also witnessed the evolution of computer-related equipment as
they got up close with the different products made by Lenovo through the years.
Forty-three Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering students visited Shanghai
University where they participated in classes and dialogue sessions with local
students, and visited companies like the Nestle mineral water factory and
Shanghai Totole Food Company.
Eighteen Audio-visual Technology students visited Olympus Corporation,
Yamaha Music, NHK’s Science and Technology Lab and Keio University during
a two-week immersion trip to Japan. These visits helped to strengthen the
students’ understanding of video and broadcasting technology, as well as video
and photography production.

INDUSTRY VISITS
During the year, 2,398 students travelled abroad on study trips. They visited major
companies and organisations in various countries to develop a better
understanding of how different industries operate. Here are some of their

Thirty-six Tourism & Resort Management students visited attractions in Australia
like the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Dreamworld, Gold Coast Convention and
Exhibition Centre, and Queensland Gallery of Modern Art. They got a behindthe-scenes tour at several establishments to understand how they function and
develop as key tourist destinations.
To deepen their appreciation
of architecture and history, 25

embarked on a study trip to
Rome and Milan. They
attended Expo Milano, the
world’s largest Universal
Exposition showcasing more
than 140 participating
countries’ installations or pavilions designed by well-known architects. Besides
visiting the architecture faculties at Domus Academy and the Polytechnic
University of Milan, they also went to historical Roman sites like the Pantheon
and Colosseum, as well as St Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel.
Kindergartens, an infant school and a teachers’ training college were among the
locations visited by 24 Early Childhood Education and Child Psychology & Early
Education students on their study trip to Taiwan. They observed local children
and teachers in classroom settings, learnt about different school environments
and attended dialogue sessions with school heads. This gave them fresh
perspectives on various teaching styles and new ideas to make lessons
engaging for young children.
A visit to the Netherlands helped 35 Landscape Design & Horticulture students
to learn about sustainable urban farming, large-scale intensive agriculture and
urban landscaping. Interactions with the locals provided the students ample
opportunities to discover more about the country’s economy, culture, landscapes
and horticultural practices, as well as education and research in Dutch
universities.
Twenty students from the School of Engineering attended a customised summer
school programme at the University of Sheffield in UK, where they were taught
by its faculty. The programme which focused on engineering design, innovation
and enterprise included dialogue sessions with industry experts in leading
companies. Working beyond traditional engineering disciplines, the students
also collaborated in teams to develop solutions to address social issues.
Touring multi-national companies like ABB and Wartsila Corporation and seeing
live-sized electrical transformers was a highlight of a study trip to Finland for 20
Electrical Engineering and Clean Energy Management students. Visits to
Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and Vaasa Polytechnic provided
opportunities for them to interact with Finnish students.

One hundred and eleven students took on eye-opening overseas internships
across a range of industries, some of whom are highlighted below:

Communities
Accountancy student Norman Foo spent five months as an intern at the
accounting department of the five-star Diamonds Thudufushi Resort in Maldives.
He learnt to handle cashiering duties, generate reports, and use new operational
systems including Sage Business Solutions and Protel Hotel Software.
School of Film & Media Studies interns at Pacific Telecommunications Council in
Hawaii helped organise a major industry conference. Mass Communication
students Arabelle Zhuang and Joed Yip, as well as Advertising & Public
Relations student Bill Lim, oversaw registration, student volunteer recruitment,
collaterals design and helped develop social media marketing strategies. They
also updated the mobile application content, handled sponsorships and
coordinated the recording of Keynote sessions, exclusive interviews and awards
ceremony at the conference.
Biomedical Science student Lee Yan Ying went through an unforgettable
internship at the Centre for Cancer Research at the Queen’s University Belfast
in Northern Ireland. She did a dissection of a human body and investigated the
effect of Vitamin C on leukaemia cells – invaluable hands-on experiences for the
aspiring doctor.
Valerie Goh’s four-month internship at the
University of Glasgow’s School of Veterinary
Medicine was a unique one, where she gained
experience with the birthing, blood collection
and feeding of lambs. The Veterinary
Bioscience student also worked with experts
in the study of wildebeest, a subspecies of the
antelope.
Based at the Electrical Engineering
department of Hochschule Mannheim
University in Germany, Electronic & Computer
Engineering student Oak Soe Paing created a
circuit for electronic devices like handphones
and laptops that helps to regulate their internal components and prevent
overheating.

SERVING OVERSEAS COMMUNITIES
The efforts of 551 students benefited needy communities overseas throughout the
year, as they embarked on community service trips aimed at improving the lives of
the less privileged. The projects they undertook include the following:

Communities
Twenty leaders from various CCA groups set out on a community service trip to
Chiangmai, Thailand, where they built a futsal court for youths in Huey Hoi
village, taught English to primary school children and learnt to cook their own
meals from scratch.
A team of 24 students from the
School of Health Sciences went
to Cambodia where they donated
clothes and toys to the needy
and taught children in primary
schools. They also helped in
painting, building fences and
benches, and setting up a mobile
clinic for local villagers.
Sixteen students from the School
of Engineering’s Mechanical
Engineering Division and nine
students from the School of
Humanities & Social Sciences
travelled to Davao City in the Philippines. They helped local teachers to conduct
English lessons and built an assembly-cum-games courtyard. In addition, the
students assisted in cooking and distributing food to needy children and also
interacted with the villagers to learn more about their culture.
A group of 29 students from the School of Design & Environment went on a
community service trip to Lombok, Indonesia. There, they worked together with
villagers to start the construction of a kindergarten by preparing its foundation
and structural framework. The students also engaged the pre-school children in
hands-on activities such as art and crafts.

FUNDRAISING
Our staff and students led meaningful campaigns to raise funds for the needy. The
following are some examples:
About 800 students from the School of Life Sciences & Chemical Technology
approached over 45,000 strangers to smile for a photograph, as part of a
campaign to raise funds for two charities – the St. John’s Home for Elderly
Persons and Xin Yuan Community Care – in conjunction with SG50
celebrations. Each smile received $1 and donations were also collected from
NP’s industry partners like pharmaceutical and biotech firm Lonza. The school
raised a total of $80,600.
Organised by NP’s Student Development and Alumni Relations Office, the
annual Arts Fiesta features some of the best performing groups in a seven-week
series of evening concerts and showcases. Besides promoting arts awareness,
it aims to engage the NP community to give back to society. Arts Fiesta 2015
raised more than $100,000 for the NP Student Aid Fund.

CHAMPIONING SOCIAL CAUSES
Our students also worked with community partners to benefit society.
A group of Mass Communication students organised the Light Up A Life
campaign for the Bone Marrow Donor Programme to raise awareness of blood
diseases and bone marrow donation. The event attracted a huge turnout, with
568 staff and students eventually signing up to be bone marrow donors.
Another group of Advertising & Public Relations students worked with the
Singapore Cancer Society to start an anti-smoking campaign, Drop It For Life,
which addressed the rising problem of social smoking. Focusing on how kicking
the habit allows for more freedom and time to pick up other beneficial activities,
the event also provided a platform for youths to make a smoke-free pledge. The
campaign achieved a $2 million public relations value in print and online news
media publicity, a 400 times return on the investment by the Singapore Cancer
Society.
A total of 94 staff and students from the School of InfoComm Technology (ICT)
pledged 765 hours of community service through food canvassing, collection
and packing for Food from the Heart during the ICT Day in November 2015. The
food collected was for distribution to needy families.
In collaboration with HealthServe, 39 Health Sciences (Nursing) (HSN) and 25
Optometry (OPT) students provided health and eye screening for 290 migrant
workers.
To mark World Sight Day, a group of OPT students gave 270 underprivileged
senior citizens free eye screenings. Spectacles were also prescribed and
provided for free to those in need, and referrals were given to those with more
serious eye and vision problems. The screenings were coordinated by
Optometry Giving Sight, a non-profit organisation.

NP COMSERVE
Under the umbrella of NP ComServe, an NP initiative to promote volunteerism, our
staff participated in several activities to give back to the community. During the
year in review, our staff contributed more than 5,700 man-hours of volunteer work.
Here are some highlights of ComServe activities:
To raise awareness of the less
privileged in the community and allow
NP staff and students to give back to
society, NP’s ComServe committee
organised the Fast-A-Meal Campaign,
which was held on campus in May
2015. Students from the School of
Design & Environment designed and
built a Hunger Tunnel, showcasing
posters and video clips on the plight of
the needy. The tunnel was
constructed from cardboard to reflect
how some elderly make ends meet by
collecting and selling cardboard for
recycling. A total of $44,000 was
raised and channelled towards the NP
Student Aid Fund and Touch
Community Services.
More than 1,000 NP students and staff took part in the annual community event,
Walk for Rice, and chalked up a total of 3,642.36 km. The distance covered was
converted into corporate donations of 36,424 bowls of rice for needy families in
the South East District.
The School of Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) initiated a series of community
service projects from April to September 2015, as part of IS’s 50 Hours of
Happiness campaign. A total of 115 IS staff, divided into 10 groups, with each
group devoting five hours of their time, took part in 10 different activities ranging
from a scavenger hunt at East Coast Park with disadvantaged children and their
families from Beyond Social Services to a movie outing with students from
Students Care Service.
The Electrical Engineering Division organised a fun-filled afternoon for 60
seniors from the Lion Befrienders Ghim Moh activity centre. Besides playing
games, the staff also had the opportunity to interact with the elderly.
Staff from the School of Life Sciences & Chemical Technology (LSCT) took the
residents from St. John’s Home for the Elderly Persons on a heritage tour
around Singapore. The seniors were also treated to a lunch reception as well as
dance and music performances put up by LSCT.
Forty-eight staff from the Estates Development and Estates Management
departments volunteered at Foodbank Singapore, where they sorted donated
food items and packed them into boxes to be delivered to the needy.

Background
> NP Fund
The Ngee Ann Polytechnic Fund (NP Fund) was established on 1 April 2003 as a
member of the Education Central Fund of the Ministry of Education. Under this
membership, the Fund is allowed to issue tax deductible receipts to donors.
Donations received by the Ngee Ann Polytechnic are channelled to the Fund.
Objectives of the Fund
The objectives of the Fund are as follows:
to receive gifts and donations for the advancement of education, including those
that are for the setting up of Endowment Funds, the principal amounts of which
will not be used;
to provide financial assistance through bursaries and grants to enable needy
and deserving students to pursue their studies at the Polytechnic;
to recognise the achievements of outstanding Polytechnic students and
graduates through award of scholarships and prizes;
to encourage research and development and to provide for staff development so
as to keep abreast of changing technologies in industry and commerce;
to provide funds for the welfare and other social/educational activities of the
students and staff of the Polytechnic;
to promote Ngee Ann Polytechnic as a tertiary institution and a centre for
polytechnic education in Singapore; and
to provide for the construction and improvement to the buildings and facilities of
Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
Programmes and Activities
During the year, the key programmes and activities include the following:
disbursement of scholarships, bursaries, grants and awards;
support of student development programmes (The Christieara Programme^) and
the provision of shuttle bus services; and
co-funding of collaborative projects with philanthropic organisations such as the
Temasek Foundation and the Lien Foundation to support social causes.
Conflict of Interest Policy
The Management Committee of the Fund and key management personnel of the
Polytechnic make yearly confirmation on related party transactions. For
transactions where they are in a position of conflict of interests, they will declare
their interests and abstain from any decision making.
Note: ^ The Christieara Programme is NP’s talent development programme designed to stretch
the development and growth of high-performing students. The programme offer students the
opportunity to attend workshops, camps, dialogues and overseas trips. Over the years, students
have found the programmes to be highly beneficial in preparing them for their future careers and
university progression. The Programme is co-funded by MOE’s Recurrent Grant.

Inaugurated in 1963 as Ngee Ann College with only 116 students, Ngee Ann
Polytechnic is today one of Singapore’s leading institutions of higher learning with
more than 16,000 full-time students, about 2,000 part-time students and an

The polytechnic offers 49 full-time courses through its nine academic schools School of Business & Accountancy, School of Design & Environment, School of

Ngee Ann supports Continuing Education and Training (CET) through its CET
Academy which offers a wide range of part-time programmes. The Polytechnic
has also established two Centres of Innovation – in Environmental & Water
Technology and Marine & Offshore Technology – to work on collaborative research
and technology projects.

COUNCIL MEMBERS
Chairman
Mr Tang Kin Fei
Mr Tang is Group President & CEO of Sembcorp Industries. With close to 30 years
at Sembcorp, he is credited with spearheading its growth into a focused energy,
water and marine group with operations spanning five continents worldwide. He
also sits on the board of Sembcorp Marine, a subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries,
as a non-executive and non-independent director. The council member of the
Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr Tang also serves on
several China-Singapore and Middle East-Singapore business councils. In
addition, he is a member of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce
Foundation, the Academic and Industry Group Executive Committee of National
Research Foundation and the Defence Science and Technology Agency Board. He
is also Vice Chairman and Trustee of the Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital, and College
Advisory Board Chairman of Nanyang Technological University’s College of
Engineering.
Deputy Chairperson
Mrs Deborah Ong
Mrs Ong, a partner (Assurance and Risk & Quality) at PricewaterhouseCoopers
LLP, has over two decades of public accounting experience. She has been the
lead partner in many of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ major audit engagements, and
oversees various people engagement initiatives, including corporate responsibility
and healthy lifestyle. Mrs Ong is a member of Singapore Tourism Board, and Lee
Kong Chian School of Medicine Governing Board at Nanyang Technological
University, chairing their Audit and Risk Committees. She was appointed a Board
member of CPA Australia in 2013, and has been a member of its Singapore
Divisional Council since 2009. She is also a member of the Singapore
Accountancy Commission and the Singapore Institute of Technology Advisory
Committee.
Members
Mr Clarence Ti Boon Wee
Mr Ti is the Principal of Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Prior to this appointment, Mr Ti has
served more than 15 years in the public sector, holding positions in the Economic
Development Board, Singapore Land Authority and Ministry of Law, the last of
which as Chief Executive Officer of VITAL, a department under the Ministry of
Finance. He is a Board Director of the School of Science & Technology, Singapore.
Mr Goh Kim Hock
Mr Goh is the Managing Director of PT Topus International, Chiat Si Industrial Pte
Ltd and CSIPL Pte Ltd. He has close to three decades of experience in the
manufacturing industry. Mr Goh is also a Director of Ngee Ann Development Pte
Ltd. He is Chairman of the Education/Scholarships and Bursaries Committee of
Ngee Ann Kongsi as well as the Management Committee for Ngee Ann Secondary
School and Ngee Ann Primary School. He is also a Director of the Ngee AnnAdelaide Education Centre.
Professor Ho Yew Kee
Professor Ho is the Head (Department of Accounting) of the National University of
Singapore's Business School. He obtained his PhD in Accounting from Carnegie
Mellon University, is a Fellow with CPA Australia and CPA Singapore, and a
Council member of ICPAS. Professor Ho is also active in the charity sector. He
serves as a Director of St Luke’s Hospital, Dover Park Hospice and the Accounting
and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) as well as the President of The Boys’
Brigade in Singapore.
Professor Francis Koh Cher Chiew
Professor Koh is the Vice Provost (Special Projects) at the Office of Provost,
Singapore Management University (SMU). He is also the Director of the MSc in
Wealth Management Programme at SMU. Professor Koh also sits on Ngee Ann
Polytechnic’s Investment Committee. He was previously a Deputy Director at GIC
and a Vice Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration at the National
University of Singapore. He sits on the Singapore Chinese Girls’ School Board and
is also a Director of Dr Koh & Partners Pte Ltd and the Singapore College of
Insurance. He is a member of the UOB-SMU Asia Enterprise Institute Board of
Governors and the Ministry of Law Advisory Committee on Moneylending.
Mr Richard Lee Sew Iam
Mr Lee is the Vice-President of Ngee Ann Kongsi (NAK) and a Chairman of Ngee
Ann Development Pte Ltd, the property arm of NAK. He is a member of the
management committee for Ngee Ann Secondary School. He is also an EXCO
member of the Orchard Road Business Association.
Mr Pek Lian Guan
Mr Pek is the Executive Director and CEO of Tiong Seng Holdings Ltd and the
Managing Director of Tiong Seng Contractors Pte Ltd. He has 20 years of
experience in project management for civil engineering and building works as well
as entrepreneurial programmes in Singapore, China, Vietnam, Laos and India. Mr
Pek holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (First Class Hons) from Loughborough
University of Technology, United Kingdom. Mr Pek is a member of the Building and
Construction Authority Board, the Singapore Quality Award Governing Council, the
Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry 57th Council, and the
Singapore-Tianjin Economic & Trade Council.
Associate Professor Joe Sim Heng Joo
Associate Professor Sim is the CEO of the National University Hospital. He is also
an Adjunct Associate Professor with the National University of Singapore’s Yong
Loo Lin School of Medicine and the National University of Singapore’s Business
School as well as the Chairman of the Advisory Committee of Ngee Ann
Polytechnic’s School of Health Sciences. Associate Professor Sim was previously
with the Singapore Administrative Service and served stints in the Ministry of
Finance, People’s Association and Ministry of Defence. He worked for a global
consulting firm before joining the National Healthcare Group. He is also a Board
member of the Singapore Workforce Development Agency and the Urban
Redevelopment Authority, a Director of the NUHS Fund Ltd and a member of the
Nanyang Polytechnic’s School of Health Sciences Advisory Committee.
Ms Shona Francoise Tan Shar Mei
Ms Tan currently heads both the Corporate Communications and Service
Excellence teams at the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). Ms Tan
graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree, before going on to attain a Masters in
Marketing & Tourism – which gradually led her to a fruitful career with leading
organisations such as Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, Ogilvy PR and IE Singapore
before joining the NTUC. During her term, she was tasked to lead the re-branding
of the Trade Development Board (to IE Singapore) and the NTUC.
Mr Jamie Teo Miang Yeow
In his current capacity as the CEO of Singapura Finance Ltd, Mr Teo is involved in
various aspects of the organisation, from strategy to credit control to information
technology. He was instrumental in the banking system upgrade and rebranding of
Singapura Finance. Mr Teo has also worked with Ernst & Young Consultants,
assisting small & medium enterprises in business planning and strategy
implementation. He is also the Vice-President of Ngee Ann Kongsi, a member of
the management committee for Ngee Ann Secondary School and a Director of
Ngee Ann-Adelaide Education Centre Pte Ltd. In addition, he is a Director of
Capitol Hill Holding Pte Ltd, and Ngee Ann Education Holdings.
Mr Daniel Yeong Bou Wai (Till Jan 2016)
Mr Yeong has over 25 years of experience in product design and manufacturing.
He was the co-founder and CEO of GES International Limited, a provider of
original design and manufacturing for Point of Sales and other electronic devices.
He is currently the Executive Director and CEO of Interplex Holdings Limited, a
global precision engineering company with factories in over 10 countries.
Mr Yue Lip Sin
Mr Yue is the Director of Assessment and Research Division of the Singapore
Examinations and Assessment Board. Prior to this, he was the Deputy Director,
Mother Tongue Languages Branch, Curriculum Planning and Development
Division, Ministry of Education from 2004 to 2011 and the Principal of Chung
Cheng High School (Main) from 2000 to 2004.
Mr Ow Fook Chuen
Mr Ow is Singapore’s Accountant-General. He is also Director at the Accounting
and Corporate Regulatory Authority, MND Holdings Pte Ltd and Singapore Deposit
Guarantee Corporation Pte Ltd, as well as a member of SMU School of
Accountancy Advisory Board and People’s Association Community Development

Mr Dhirendra Shantilal
Mr Shantilal is Board Director at Fircroft Engineering Services Ltd. He has more
than 35 years of experience in recruitment and workforce management and has
managed operations across multiple countries and territories in Asia-Pacific,
Middle East and Europe. He is also a Committee Member in the Association of
Professional Staffing Companies – Asia and a member of the Board of Trustees of
the Qatar National Library. Prior to this, he was a Co-Owner and Managing
Director or of Business Trends Pte Ltd which was sold to Kelly Services. He served
as their Senior Vice President before moving on to Fircroft. He has also been an
Advisor with the Franchising and Licensing Association of Singapore since 2003.
COL Goh Si Hou
COL Goh is currently the Assistant Chief of the General Staff (Plans) at the
Ministry of Defence (MINDEF). He has held several leadership positions which
include Division Artillery Commander, 3rd Division and Deputy Director (Personnel
Policy) in MINDEF. He also headed a project office supporting MINDEF's
Committee to Strengthen National Service. In addition, COL Goh was an Alternate
Director on the board of ST Electronics (Info-Comm System) Pte Ltd.
Professor David Hung Wei Loong
Professor Hung is currently Associate Dean of the Office of Education Research at
the National Institute of Education, Singapore. He is an Honorary Consultant to
Ministry of Education’s (MOE) Educational Technology Division as well as a
member of several of MOE’s committees. These include the Edulab Steering
Committee, the ICT Masterplan in Education Planning Committee, the Singapore
Curriculum Philosophy and Pedagogical Practices Working Committee and the
Committee for Translational Research, Innovation & Scaling.

A total of 5254 students graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic in 2016.
Polytechnic graduates continued to be sought after by employers and maintained
high salaries in 2015. According to the Graduate Employment Survey 2015, the
overall employment rate for fresh polytechnic graduates remains high at 88.9 per
cent. As for post-National Service graduates, the employment rate was 91.5 per
cent.
