From Our Honorary Chair:
Womanspace! Boy I wish that we didn’t need a place for women and
children to find refuge from abusers. But, as my sister Barbara well
knew, that day is unlikely to ever come, and so Womanspace will be
a vital resource in the community into the future. The work you do in
getting women on their feet, into jobs, into homes, and on the roll as taxpayers serves all of us. My thanks to the incredibly dedicated staff at
Womanspace; Barbara would love to be having a purple party for you
all. And my thanks to all the many people of the Princeton area who
have celebrated over the years to make Womanspace the worldclass institution that it is. My mother joins me in thanking you also, for keeping
Barbara’s memory alive and honoring her contribution with this annual
award.

From Our Board President:
Kristin M. Keller
Welcome to the 21st Barbara Boggs Award dinner!
This evening is very special to us at Womanspace - it is an opportunity to celebrate the incredible work of the staff,
our supporters and our clients. It also provides a moment where the larger Womanspace community can come
together, reconnect and re-energize ourselves for another year.
This is so important because without you, our dedicated and generous community, we could not do all of the vital
work we celebrate tonight. I hope each of you take pride in your unique contributions, no matter what they are,
how big or small, because each one truly makes a difference.
Speaking of making a difference, we're honored to have Minh Dang with us this evening. She is testament to how
much power there is in a single voice when backed with conviction and courage.
Let that be a lesson to all of us and continue to make our voices heard now and all year long.
Warmly,
Kristin Keller

From Our Event Chairperson:
Human trafficking is “one of the fastest growing crimes in the
country.” When I read this quote by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle
Morgan, I thought: Can this be right? It is 2015 in the United States
of America. Just as surprising to me is that New Jersey has the
potential to be one of the country’s major entry, transit, and
destination states for trafficking because of its easy accessibility,
proximity to NYC, tourist destinations like Atlantic City and its port
cities. Most of us likely are aware that human trafficking is a global
issue, but I expect many of you, like me, are thinking it can’t possibly
be true that human trafficking is on the rise in the U.S.?
Linda Cooper
Tonight’s honoree, Minh Dang, is to be celebrated for her courage and, against all personal odds, for finding
her voice to educate us and to call us to action. We admire her fortitude and thank her for accepting our
2015 Barbara Boggs Sigmund Award.
Womanspace continues to serve hundreds of women, children and men who are survivors of domestic violence and
sexual assault each year in Mercer County. Tonight you will learn why Womanspace also has been called to join
the heroic efforts of human trafficking activists like Ms. Dang.
We are grateful that you have joined us this evening and truly hope you will glean knowledge and understanding
about human trafficking, the importance of raising awareness about the issue and the efforts that Womanspace and
other organizations are undertaking to halt this horrific assault on vulnerable children and adults.
On behalf of the Barbara Boggs Sigmund Committee, I thank you for supporting Womanspace and for attending
tonight’s event. Our promise is to continue to dedicate ourselves to fight against all forms of interpersonal violence,
including human trafficking, domestic and sexual violence; to restore hope, dignity, safe refuge and personal
freedom to survivors. We are grateful to all of you, our supporters, as it is your generosity that allows our work to
continue.

From Our Executive Director:
This 21st Barbara Boggs Sigmund Award Dinner is very special as
we honor a courageous, brilliant and accomplished woman. Minh Dang,
a human rights activist and scholar who has turned unthinkable life
experiences into an opportunity to make the world a safer place for so
many other women, children, and men. Inspiring us to Greatness, our
criteria for choosing each award winner, has never been more
descriptive of an honoree. Minh’s work focuses on ending human
trafficking on a macro level by advocating for stronger legislation to
protect its victims and to hold perpetrators accountable. On a more
personal level she shares her own story and in doing so creates new
awareness providing other survivors with the understanding that they
are “not alone”. Her voice gives voice to so many survivors who have
lost theirs. We are grateful to Minh for taking enormous risks in her own
personal healing journey so that the path to safety and healing can be
possible for so many who come after her.
Patricia M. Hart
The Barbara Boggs Sigmund Award provides an opportunity for Womanspace to recognize innovators and
advocates who bring their own special creativity and commitment to making a difference in the world. Our list of
award winners is indeed impressive and each in their own way helped us to accomplish our mission, enlighten
the community and strengthen the opportunities for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Although their
initial goals may not have been to Inspire us to Greatness, they have managed to do just that. Those who step-up
and create an environment that allows for conversation, legislation, support and safety for families are the
foundation on which this movement was built. So often we stand silently in awe of those willing to take the risks and
this is a time to loudly proclaim to the community our gratitude for strong, smart, committed individuals who
help create the kind of world that leaves no one behind believing that everyone deserves to feel safe in their home
and their community.
Barbara, never afraid to ask for anything, began the Womanspace journey 38 years ago. She joined forces with
five brave women who founded this organization dedicated to the safety of families in Mercer County. It is their
work that we look to today when we need to feel inspired and not just tired. The survivors who come through
our doors, or to our response team rooms in the police departments, to the hospitals, to the courts or who call our
hotlines deserve nothing but the best we have to offer. The staff and volunteers of Womanspace never have to be
reminded of that fact. They work tirelessly, compassionately and so skillfully every day, 24/7 to ensure a safe
haven, assistance in a journey to healing, a supportive presence and a shared joy in celebrating every survivor
success. It is that commitment we share with our award winner this year, Minh Dang.
Thank you to everyone who celebrates with us, who supports our work, who never judges survivors for their choices,
and who understands that “being kind” can be the first step to making a difference in another person’s life.
With the Warmest Regard,
Patricia M. Hart, M.S.W., LCSW

About our Honoree … Minh Dang
Minh Dang, MSW is currently an independent consultant,
trainer, and speaker on issues of human trafficking, leadership
development, and social justice. She provides training and technical assistance to NGOs, Universities, and government agencies across the country. Minh is a staunch advocate for survivors
of child abuse and human trafficking and is developing strategies to support education, training, and leadership development
for survivors.
Most recently, Minh was the Executive Director for Don’t
Sell Bodies (DSB), an anti-human trafficking initiative founded by
Jada Pinkett Smith. With DSB, Minh helped launch the U.S. Sen- Minh Dang and Jada Pinkett Smith in Washington, DC.
ate Caucus to End Human Trafficking with Senators Rob Portman
and Richard Blumenthal. In May 2013, Minh was one of fifteen Asian American/Pacific Islander
women recognized at the White House as a Champion of Change for her efforts to end human trafficking. Minh is a ten-year veteran of the service-learning field and a two-time alum of UC Berkeley.
She received her B.A. in Sociology in 2006 and her Masters in Social Welfare in 2013. Prior to graduate school, Minh coordinated the Bonner Leaders AmeriCorps Program at the UC Berkeley Public
Service Center. She has served on the Board of Directors for Youth Engagement Advocacy Housing
(YEAH) and The Norma J. Morris Center for Healing. Minh also co-led weekly Adult Survivors of
Child Abuse (ASCA) support groups for six years.
Minh is passionate about promoting the integration of individual and community healing. A
true “love warrior,” as her friend calls her, Minh has traveled extensively telling her harrowing story
of survival from child abuse and sexual slavery in the United States. Minh’s story first reached the public domain in 2010 when MSNBC aired the documentary Sex Slaves in America: Minh’s Story. The
report aired just three years after Minh’s daring escape and since that time she has courageously addressed tens of thousands of concerned citizens to
help prevent modern-day slavery in the United
States.
The California Alumni Association honored
Minh in March 2014 with the Mark Bingham
Award for Excellence in Achievement by a Young
Alumna. The Dang Fellowship for Human Rights
was created at the UC Berkeley Public Service Center to honor her life’s work, and to build and sustain

To Our Honoree...
Cokie Roberts
Minh Dang
What an honor that Minh Dang has agreed to accept the 21st annual Barbara Boggs Sigmund Award.
When my sister Barbara helped found Womanspace she knew that it would be an essential resource
for the women and children of the community who have suffered from abuse—I don’t know if she realized how big a job it would be. Womanspace has now served more than 300,000 adults and children
who have found themselves victims of violence. Barbara’s husband Paul was here to see the remarkable
work that Womanspace has done and was at every dinner until last year when we lost him just before
the award night. So we honor him tonight, along with my sister and most especially Minh Dang. You
will hear her incredible story and how valiant she has been in bringing it to the public in the hopes of
keeping other young girls from suffering what she has suffered. What so struck me as I learned about
the horrors she was subjected to was how sex trafficking can be going on right under our noses—in
beautiful towns like Princeton, in suburbs and rural areas as well as cities. Girls who seem as normal
as any you have ever met could be tortured by horrible abuse that goes unreported and unaddressed.
If you look at the numbers they are staggering. More than four million women and children have been
snared into the sex trade which is estimated as a $32 billion business. Right now in this country somewhere around 40,000 people are trapped in sex slavery. The size of a town.
Last year the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children estimated that I in 6 runaways reported to them were likely to have been ensnared in the sex trade. Eighty-three per cent of the cases in
the U.S. involve American born victims, many of them children between the ages of 9 and 13. And what
these children are forced to do is so horrendous that detailing the horrors would ruin your dinner.
Minh Dang is bringing the issue and its solutions to light by having the courage to tell her own story. I
salute her and all of you who are there to support her and the work that Womanspace does day, and
especially night, to protect the women and children of the community and lead them into productive,
positive lives.

Mind Control
A literary
Minh
Dang contribution from our honoree:
Thursday,
January 22, 2015 - 00:00
Minh Dang
January is human trafficking awareness month in the United
States. Acknowledging this, I want people to understand how
human trafficking requires mind control.
In order to understand what this means we need, first of all, to know what the mind is, what it
means to control something, and what it means for one person’s mind to be controlled by another
person. While these seem like simple concepts, they are actually quite complicated. In fact, we
still don't quite understand what the mind is. About 15 years ago, Daniel Siegel and some
colleagues attempted to define the phrase “mental health”. His question: what exactly is the
“mental” part of “mental health”? In other words, what is the mind? His conclusion, after working
with people across a variety of disciplines, was that the mind is “…a process that regulates the
flow of energy and information” (Siegel, 2006). Our minds deal with information from inside and
outside of our bodies. A lot of mental processes occur without us being consciously aware of them.
Control is a verb which describes the exercise of a power over someone or something. Control
isn’t always a bad thing. I enjoy playing soccer, and keeping control of the ball is actually an
objective of each player and each team. This analogy, however, allows us to understand what it
means to control other people. When I control a soccer ball, I manipulate it, tell it what to do,
keep it in my possession, and pass it to the people to whom I want to pass it. Unfortunately, mind
control works in similar ways. A person can do things in order to manipulate others’ minds so that
they can treat others like possessions. If a mind is a process, mind control seeks to control another
person’s process of regulating the flow of energy and information. The tricky thing is this: is how
does someone control another person? Control, as an exercise of power, requires a power
differential.
One example is that of an adult-child relationship. There is an inherent power difference between
adults and children. This power is very often misused and abused. Adults can control children very
easily, especially if those children are dependent on the adults for safety, love, food, etc.
Power differences between adults can be established in a variety of ways, such as brute force and
violence, humiliation, shaming, threats, and so much more. In addition, power dynamics can be
created in adult relationships that are similar to parent-child relationships. Adults who are
dependent on other adults for food, shelter, or safety, can be vulnerable to exploitation and
abuse.

Human Trafficking Statistics here
in the United States:
83% OF CONFIRMED TRAFFICKING
CASES IN THE UNITED STATES ARE AMERICAN BORN CITIZENS
It's hard to believe, but more humans are being used as slaves than ever before.
Between 700,000 and 4 million women and children will be trafficked this year, with the majority being
forced to work in the sex trade. In America, there are an estimated 40,000 men, women and children
enslaved at this very moment. If everyone who cares takes action, we can end slavery once and for all.
It's time.
Recognizing the Signs
Are you or someone you know being trafficked? Is human trafficking happening in your community?
Knowing the red flags and indicators of human trafficking is a key step in identifying more victims and
helping them find the assistance they need.
To request help or report suspected human trafficking, call the National Human Trafficking
Resource Center hotline at 1-888-373-7888. Or text INFO or HELP to us at: BeFree (233733).

joyful sorrows and sorrowful joys.
By Minh Dang
joyful sorrows and sorrowful joys.
so far that’s the theme of 2014.
i am emerging out of the fire and adjusting to clean air.
learning that life is a lot of loving, hurting, smiling, crying,
getting up, crumbling, getting up again, crumbling again,
hugging, laughing, singing, dancing
chillin’, thinking, reading, reflecting,
sleeping, learning, apologizing,
dreaming
forgiving (some things)
grieving (a lot of things)
writing, biking, running, exploring,
falling, standing, holding
snuggling, kissing
and so much more…
if we don’t experience darkness, how do we see the light?
if we don’t know pain, how would we know beauty?
as my therapist says, “go have joy in your sorrows.”

loneliness
By Minh Dang
I sit cross legged on the carpet floor
in a 8” x 10” room in San Jose, CA
my back leans against the bed
and I stare at my bookshelf
I see books I haven’t read
books I can’t recall and
books I wish I could melt in to
above the shelf hangs a Winnie the Pooh poster
I bought at the flea market
childlike for a 15 year old
I want to take it down but I ache
without it’s message:
"friends make the world go round"
my best friend these days are boxes
shoeboxes filled with ticket stubs, cards, notes,
anything to remind me I existed once
and to give me hope that maybe I will exist again
the loneliness crushes, numbs, aggravates
until one day it is too much
I choose freedom
I left those boxes behind and found people
loneliness is the backbone of slavery
and the lock and key of childhood sexual abuse
I will not ache alone
I cannot bear it
I must be known

A Special Thanks To:
Thanks to everyone who has supported Womanspace tonight and throughout the year. Without your help,
we would not be able to serve our clients to “prevent abuse, protect families, and change lives through
empowerment and a safety net of supportive services.”
Tonight, we especially thank:
Minh Dang, our wonderful honoree, for graciously accepting the Barbara Boggs Sigmund Award and
for taking time out of your demanding schedule to share your personal story and passion for aiding
children to become survivors and no longer victims of these horrific crimes.
Cokie Roberts, our longtime honorary chair and staunchest enthusiast of Womanspace. Thank you for
upholding the lasting legacy of your sister; Barbara Boggs Sigmund and standing by us year after year
as our supporter, friend and confidant.
Janssen Research and Development, LLC, Thank you to our presenting sponsor for yet another year.
Without your support, BBS would not be what it is today. You have helped us reach another level and
through that support and leadership of Husseini Manji, Danielle Coppola, Ruby Suresh and many others
from this wonderful company; we thank you for helping Womanspace thrive.
Linda Cooper, our fabulous event chair for taking on this responsibility and doing it with such
grace and poise.
Dahlia of Pennington for the donation of the beautiful corsages and the floral displays that greeted
everyone at the registration tables tonight!
To all of our 2015 Barabara Boggs Sigmund Award Dinner Sponsors! Thank you for supporting our
dinner, Womanspace and most of all; our mission.
Joanne Coppola, Danielle Coppola, Dana Fraytak Troiano, Landis Eaton, Ellen Kemp, Jan Noonan,
Ruth Miller, Frances Zeitler, Nikki Stern, Joyce Albin Rappeport, Rose “Dede” Nini, Linda Ahern,
Joan Bartl, Jennifer Brandt, Debbie Cacciabaudo, Pam Clarkson and Linda Verrault for your hard work
and dedication to BBS and Womanspace. This event would not be as successful and magnificent as
it is without your perseverance and commitment.
TThe Hyatt Regency Princeton for your diligent staff and services led by Paula Bennett.
John Vitolo, Wayne Schur and Peeq Media for providing your in-kind services, creativity and expertise
on our marketing materials and invitations.

All of our friends at The Times of Trenton for your wonderful advertising sponsorship. Thank you for
allowing us to present our vision on your pages and supporting Womanspace throughout the year
with COL, BBS and your overall dedication to our mission.
The Womanspace Board of Directors, for providing 100% board participation in everything that we do.
Our board is comprised of the most dedicated volunteers who strengthen our organization and support
our mission throughout the year.
Pat Hart, our fearless leader who always provides a calming presence in response to any situation no
matter how large or small. Her poise and support are unwavering. Thank you for allowing us to take
risks when needed while maintaining the history and integrity to keep Womanspace moving forward in
achieving our goals. Goals that had once seemed improbable but with a little faith became possible.
Lauren Nazarian, our Director of Development who hit the ground running to provide the leadership of
a very busy development department that has a vital impact on the capacity building of Womanspace.
Thank you for your willingness to multi-task in a way that is barely humanly possible and to do it with
amazing good humor and a collaborative spirit.
Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies for generously providing us with fabulous swag bags for each
of our guests to take home to enjoy. This lovely touch shows our guests how important they are to us
and how important their support is to us.
Susan Adams, our Volunteer Coordinator who possesses the ability to engage volunteers who work
hard and come to understand the importance of the work through their witnessing of your commitment.
Thank you for being everywhere at all times, without your omnipresent nature, Womanspace would not
be as visible as it has become in Mercer County.
Gina Vinch, our Development Associate who started in February, jumped in with both feet, learning
quickly and completing every new task with a big smile and infectious enthusiasm.
Most importantly, thank you to all the staff who contribute to the successes of Womanspace and
don’t view their experiences just as a job but as a commitment to a cause that is greater than all of us.
Womanspace is comprised of a dynamic, talented team that epitomizes the mission of the organization,
“To Prevent Abuse, Protect Families and Change Lives through empowerment and a safety net of
supportive services”

Illuminating the Night
to Raise Awareness
of Domestic Violence
and Sexual Assault
During the winter solstice in December, Communities of Light™
candles line the streets of central New Jersey - a powerful
symbol of hope for women and children impacted by domestic
violence and sexual assault in our community. Communities of
Light ™ raises awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault
and the services available to help victims in Mercer County. The
candles come from special luminary kits produced by Womanspace. Their light helps spread our important message that Peace
Begins at Home.
Each year, more than 200 volunteers sell, distribute and display
the luminary kits. Volunteers sell the luminary kits to their
friends, neighbors and co-workers. Participants can also buy the
kits from a variety of local retail stores and on the Womanspace
Website.
At dusk on a December evening hundreds of people,
scores of organizations and community groups, and the 12
municipalities within Mercer County will light thousands of their
candles. Domestic violence agencies from neighboring New
Jersey counties also participate in Communities of Light.

Celebrating 5 Years of Changing Children's
Lives in Your Community!
At Christine’s Hope . . .
We BELIEVE every child deserves a chance to be a kid regardless of
their circumstances.
We HELP create the next generation of community leaders by teaching
kids how to help other kids.
We GIVE HOPE to tens of thousands of children whether we are
making a donation to a YMCA for kids to go to camp or involving student
volunteers to pack pajama bags for children in shelters.
We MAKE A DIFFERENCE in our local community through the
generosity of our donors and volunteers.
Every kid deserves the chance to just be a kid!
