Little did I know when I planned my first mission trip to Kipkaren, Kenya, in 2006, that in four short years, we would have a well-established nonprofit supporting two missions: our international program, Eye Care Kenya and our local program, Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion. Our mission is to combine eye care with other health care specialties to serve the needs of all individuals world-wide. And, most importantly, our success in doing this is predicated on community partnerships, collaboration, and inclusiveness. Believing in the concept of solidarity, a group of very talented and committed individuals have come together to achieve a common and greater purpose than what we individually could do on our own. From our founding Spanda Inc. Board of Directors to our volunteers, donors, and staff we have accomplished some amazing results in a short period of time. A huge thank you to everyone who has joined us in bringing eye care services, vision rehabilitation services, and other health care services to our local community as well as to our Kenyan neighbors. In this report you will find a brief history of Spanda, a snapshot of our financial picture, and an overview of our two programs as well as the individuals they serve. Although a young organization, our services have grown and the number of individuals served by our programs has increased over 58% this past year. Additionally, the number of individual donors committed to supporting our agency grew by over 300 individual donors! We appreciate your review of our report and invite you to contact us with any questions. Kimberly Torres, COTA/L Occupational Therapy Assistant, CRVIM It has been an amazing journey, and we all are excited as we look towards the future. Remember Spanda’s motto: “It takes only a single idea, a single action to move the world”. Thank you for joining with us! Founder and Board Chairperson Page 3 Spanda Inc. was founded as a nonprofit organization in 2006 by Dr. DeAnn Fitzgerald, a local Cedar Rapids, IA, optometrist. Spanda means “movement” and its motto is: “it takes only a single idea, a single action to move the world”. Spanda’s mission is to combine optometry with other health care specialties to improve the lives of all individuals— regardless of age or personal situations—throughout the world. Spanda prides itself in partnering with other organizations to further this important mission. Dr. Fitzgerald has a strong history of philanthropic work and experience. In 2006, after meeting a representative from the organization, Empowering Lives International, she developed her first program, “Eye Care Kenya”. Left: Picture of the eye and health care clinic established in Kipkaren, Kenya, with the help of the “Eye Care Kenya” Program. In 2008, Dr Fitzgerald wished to expand Spanda’s focus to include her local community. Spanda Inc. developed and opened Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion, an outpatient occupational therapy clinic specializing in vision rehabilitation. Right: Picture of the Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion clinic, established in 2008 as the second program of Spanda Inc. Spanda has grown to support a budget of over $400,000 and includes a staff of four full-time and two part-time individuals. Over 400 individual donors support programming, and many community volunteers assist with operational and fundraising support. Spanda Inc. Board of Directors We are proud and fortunate to be governed by a diverse and caring volunteer board dedicated to furthering the mission of Spanda. Our 2010 board members included: Dr. DeAnn Fitzgerald, O.D., Board Chairperson Owner of Dr. Fitzgerald & Associates, Founder of Spanda Inc. Dr. Debra Brooks, Vice-Chair CEO of Iowa Neuromuscular Therapy Center Jim Hall, CPA, Treasurer CEO of Rehab Management Services, LLC Jaye Kennedy, Secretary Director of Development College of Education and the Belin & Blank Center, University of Iowa Shelly Morelock, Re-entry Coordinator for 6th Judicial District Department of Correctional Services Juli Hardin, Owner of Jules Bakery Karen Bruess, Vice-President of Human Resources for Four Oaks Family and Children Services Dr. Susan Kelly-Taylor, PhD, LMHC, Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, IA Dawn Wilber, Senior Software Manager for Rockwell Collins Page 4 Who Are We: Eye Care Kenya is the international program of Spanda Inc. and is dedicated to bringing eye and health care services to countries that do not have access to these services in a sustainable and replicable manner. Who We Serve: Through a partnership that began in 2006 with a California-based nonprofit, Empowering Lives International, Spanda Inc. has helped to build an eye care, health care, and dental clinic in the rural village of Kipkaren, Kenya. The village is home to 32,000 individuals who lacked access to the basic necessities of clean water and health care. Many had to travel over two hours (by a village auto) to the nearest health care facility in Eldoret, Kenya, in order to receive any services. The Kipkaren clinic is proudly staffed by local Kenyans who have been trained and educated in the various health care specialties. Accomplishments of Eye Care Kenya: Spanda Inc. has sponsored four mission trips to Kipkaren (2006, 2007, 2009, January 2011). Since the establishment of the clinic, the Kipkaren clinic staff report a 75% decrease in common illness cases due to the ability to offer preventative care. The clinic delivers the following services via trained Kenyan staff: Acute care disease management HIV testing and counseling Maternal and child care (Spanda purchased a portable ultrasound machine for use at the clinic) Pharmaceutical services Full scale eye care services with locally trained optometrist, Julius, and lab to manufacture glasses Full scale dental services initiated in 2010 A group of MBA students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology conducted an in-depth business plan and analysis of the clinic (in 2009). Their report shows a sustainable clinic model with optometry and dentistry services as two revenue generating endeavors. Both will assist the clinic in becoming self-sufficient and sustainable. The report noted the clinic needs to develop marketing strategies to make the villagers aware of all of the services available. Page 5 In 2009/2010 in partnership with Metro North Rotary, three wells were dug supplying the village, clinic and community school with clean water. In 2010, Spanda raised money to furnish the clinic with a full scale dental program, including a dental chair and needed equipment. In 2009, Dental Associates of Cedar Rapids sponsored staff member, Carla Mulneaux, to assess the clinic’s dental equipment needs. In 2010, Dental Associates of Cedar Rapids spearheaded fundraising efforts to equip the clinic with needed materials. Spanda Inc. is currently assisting the Kipkaren village with the formation of a sewing and quilting enterprise. Spanda will help with the establishment of United States based markets for the materials produced by the local villagers. Spanda Inc. is also partnering with The Living Room, a nonprofit who has built a hospice house adjacent to the clinic. The Living Room provides comprehensive hospice care to all in need— including AIDS and cancer patients. The hospice house is now able to access clean water and health care services from the clinic. Spanda Inc. is also developing a plan to bring motorcycle ambulances to the region (2011-2012). Spanda Inc. has been approached by a group of missionaries in Korr, Kenya (northern desert region of Kenya), to help develop a clean water/medical clinic plan to serve the ten semi-nomadic tribes of this region. “KenYa See My Future in Your Eyes” Dental Banquet : One of Spanda Inc.’s major 2010 fundraising events was the “KenYa See My Future in Your Eyes” Dental Banquet. Through the leadership of Dental Associates of Cedar Rapids, Spanda Inc. was able to net $30,000 at the September 18, banquet. All proceeds benefitted the dental and water projects of the Kipkaren clinic and village. Over 350 guests enjoyed an evening of authentic Kenyan food, music by the University of Iowa Steel Drum Band, and were entertained by MC Beth Maliki, KCRG anchorwoman. A live and silent auction also was held. The 2011 Spanda mission team was able to see local Kenyan dentist, Jeremiah, utilizing the new equipment and dental chair. Above: Attendees browse the silent auction. Left: The U of I Steel Drum Band warming up to perform. Page 6 “Maji ni uhai” ~ Water is Life Imagine watching a mother with two children retrieving water from a dirty ditch because they do not have access to something we take for granted: clean drinking water. Unfortunately this is the reality for one billion individuals world-wide who lack a clean water supply. The country of Kenya ranks second in the world for individuals without access to clean water. Spanda’s goal is to help change this reality. In 2009, Spanda began the ambitious goal of raising money to provide clean water to the Kipkaren, Kenya, village. In partnership with Metro North Rotary of Cedar Rapids, close to $50,000 was raised. Three boreholes with piping were completed in the spring of 2010, supplying clean water to the clinic, to the community school and to the village at-large. The wells impact over 32,000 villagers daily who, for the first time, do not need to forage for water or boil water to make it safe for drinking. Above: A picture of Betty, who chlorinates water for her neighbors, support group and self. Above: Drilling of the well for the clinic. Spanda also worked with the Pure Water for All Foundation founded by John Hays of Washington, Iowa. Hand-held chlorinators, as well as an industrial chlorinator have been installed at the Kipkaren clinic. The hand-held chlorinators can produce enough chlorine to treat water for over 5,000 individuals daily. Local villagers have been trained to make the chlorine. One special individual, Betty, used the chlorinator to treat water for her neighbors and for the support group she helped to start for individuals with HIV/AIDS. The need for clean water is a basic human right and one that Spanda is proud to champion. Water truly is life! Page 7 Who Are We: Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion combines the expertise of occupational therapy and optometry together for an all-encompassing approach to vision rehabilitation. The occupational therapy staff and optometrist provide innovative programming through the use of state-of-the-art equipment and the latest research on the brain’s neuroplastic and sensory processing capabilities. Who We Serve: Patients with Low Vision Mildred has been diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration, a disease which robs the sight of mostly older adults. Through the services at Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion, she has been able to receive a low vision functional optometric exam, which revealed where she still had remaining sight. With the assistance of the low vision occupational therapist, she received three training sessions. These enabled her to learn how to use her remaining vision more effectively to read her medicine bottles and to cook. The occupational therapist was able to suggest appropriate magnification and lighting—all of which increased her quality of life. Although Mildred feared being placed in a nursing home due to her declining eye sight, she remains living independently and safely in her own home enjoying her ability to read her mail and to prepare her favorite recipes. Patients with Brain Injuries Andrea was in the back seat of her parent’s car when they were hit head-on by a drunk driver. At the time, she was a seventeen year-old gymnast headed into her senior year of high school, where she took advanced placement courses and was on target to be one of the class valedictorians. Unfortunately, Andrea suffered from an undiagnosed post concussion. She could not keep her balance, her vision ”was off”, and she could not comprehend what she was reading without hours of trying to re-read and process the information. Through the support of the optometrist, Andrea was given blue tint filters to stabilize her vision and balance. The center’s occupational therapist introduced Andrea to cranio-sacral therapy in an effort to manage her pain more effectively. And, Andrea took part in an innovative sensory reintegration therapy. Proudly, she is now in college where she is excelling. Andrea reported, “I know that truly in my heart, my everyday activities and level of pain would be completely different than it is today, if I had not gone to Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion.” Page 8 Pediatric Patients with Learning Difficulties, Development Delays and Sensory Processing Disorders Cameron is a five-year old kindergartner with a diagnosis of autism. He was unable to dress himself, did not sleep well, had a dislike for lights on in his house, wore ear covers to block out over stimulating sounds, and screamed constantly throughout the day. Cameron was given a battery of assessments which noted deficiencies in coordination, sensory processing, eye/hand coordination, and both fine and gross motor skills. After consultation with the optometrist, the occupational therapist, and his primary health care provider, Cameron took part in the “Sensory Learning Program”, which is an intensive immersive therapy combining vision, auditory, and balance retraining simultaneously. Thirty days after completing the therapy, his mother noted the following changes: “Cameron is able to use new words and form longer sentences. For the first time, he is able to describe things to me!” “We have been able to go out to eat and shopping without screaming or crying fits.” “Cameron is able to play independently without constant supervision.” "I was nervous to commit to SLP. From many of the therapies, diets and medications I've tried, I was not expecting results. Within the first week of therapy, I noticed changes. You guys have by far exceeded my expectations! We like to think of the Vision In Motion girls as our angels. You have done things other therapists haven't been able to even come close to in 3 years of therapy—you did it in one month! I will refer anyone I know in need of sensory therapy." concluded Cameron’s mom. Patients with Headaches, Neck/Back Pain, Post Surgical Edema Khris came to Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion in April 2009 with a lumbering walk and swollen knees the size of footballs. She was quickly losing mobility in her left knee, requiring her to have knee replacement surgery. For one year prior to her scheduled surgery, the center’s occupational therapist who specializes in Lymph Drainage and Cranio-Sacral Therapy worked with Khris to reduce the swelling in her knee by performing Lymph Drainage. The therapy helped to get the fluid around her knee moving out, which allowed the swelling to subside prior to her total knee replacement. During surgery, the doctor was surprised there wasn’t more swelling in her knee because they discovered there was more damage than they’d originally thought. “Therese performed a miracle for me. Without these services, I would have had a much harder time after surgery. My surgeon was amazed at what these treatments did for me,” says Khris. Today, Khris continues with elective Lymph Drainage treatments as maintenance for her new knee, as well as a preventative measure for her right knee. Page 9 The Community Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion offers an annual continuing education conference to professionals, caregivers and consumers throughout the State of Iowa. In January of 2010, the Second Annual “Training Your Brain to See Again” Conference was held at the Kirkwood Community College Continuing Education Center. Seventy-eight individuals attended and heard co-keynote speakers, Diana Ludlam and Dr. Ken Ciuffreda speak on neurologically related oculomotor abnormalities as well as appropriate treatment strategies. Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion staff also presented to: The Brain Injury Association of Iowa Local Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs Rockwell Collins Low Vision Support Groups in Northeastern Iowa As well as various community health fairs and walks Additionally, Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion provided two community outreach projects to the nonprofit organization, Four Oaks. Funding for one of the projects was provided by the Rockwell Collins Charitable Grant Program. Vision training skills classes were provided to the after-school autism group and a mobile visagraph clinic was offered to students of the Four Oaks campus school. The project determined if children had eyetracking problems which were associated with lower reading scores. Program Statistics: During FY’2010 (January 2010-December 2010), a total of 876 unduplicated patients were served. This was a 58% increase from FY’2009. Breakdown of Therapy Patients Served in FY’2010 Page 10 Cedar Rapids TalentFest Fundraising Event: The Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion clinic accepts all major insurances, including Medicare and Iowa Medicaid. Approximately one-third of all patients served at the clinic receive free or reduced cost services. Much of this has been made possible due to the founder, Dr. DeAnn Fitzgerald’s, own personal generosity and through fundraising. The Cedar Rapids TalentFest kicked off in 2010 as the signature fundraising event for the clinic. All proceeds garnered from this event are put towards scholarships and funding to benefit clients in need of the services provided at the clinic. The TalentFest offered the opportunity to audition (at six different dates from March through June) with the chance to be one of the 16 finalists performing at Theatre Cedar Rapids. KCRG Show You Care, Mix 96.5 and Dr. Fitzgerald & Associates were major sponsors. Through ticket sales at the finale and through audition fees, close to $8,000 was raised to benefit the clinic. This event has become an annual fundraiser for Cedar Rapids Vision In Motion. . Top: The top 16 finalists in front of the red curtain at Theatre Cedar Rapids.
