bayside blades news Volume 5, Issue 1 March 2007 Bayside Blades: 487 Highett Rd, Highett, VIC 3190 Ph: 03 9555 7988 or 1 300 665 272 [email protected] www.baysideblades.com.au What’s New! What’s Happening? Dan de Sousa Razors Genesys 4.1 We have joined the cyberworld! Yes, we have created a myspace profile. Check it out at www.myspace.com/baysidebladesau The profile has a blog which will be updated each fortnight so add us as a friend to keep in the know about everything Bayside! We have been having some great Tuesday night skates recently. The crew has been skating from Highett and as always it’s been an amazing workout keeping up with some of the faster guys and a good social time for those just cruising. I strongly advise those who haven’t come along for a Tuesday night skate to try it out, and if you want to get fit while having a good time make it a weekly thing. We leave from the shop at 7pm approx and usually get back between 8:30 and 9pm. New Staff we have 2 new family members, Guy Owen and Dan de Sousa. Guy is a long time ripper from Canberra who features in the recent ‘Canthrax’ dvd, available instore. Dan has travelled here from Christchurch, New Zealand. He was the main inline instructor there for a number of years and has taught school classes, tourism groups and even at youth detention centres. Both guys (sic) are eager street skaters and can be seen skating around the city or at various skateparks most nights. Aggressive Lessons For a while now Jenny has been successfully running skatepark, ramp and street skating lessons for us, and with the arrival of Dan we can now offer more times if requested. The lessons are really good for kids wanting to learn more about skatepark etiquette and how to do some of the limitless list of air and grind tricks currently seen in the latest dvds. Call us for pricing and we can even arrange a package if your child would like to do a series of lessons. For younger members it’s a chance to brush up on your skills before joining one of our famous ‘Shed’ clinics and competitions. Dylan’s Mum, Carol One of our junior members, Dylan Stark, who incidentally won both the Vert and Miniramp sections of our last Shed Clinic, has put his hand up to do a rolling demo at an upcoming competition in Hoppers Crossing. The comp features BMX and skateboarding. When asked why there was no inline section the organisers said no one had offered to run it. Carol Stark immediately put her name down and as such there will be an inline comp next year, and they have allowed Dylan to put on a show for the kids, so get behind him and let the loudest cheers on the day be for rollerblading! The comp is on Saturday the 24th of March at Hoppers Crossing. The stylish Genesys 4.1 has arrived. This is one comfy skate with the new Razors liner feeling like a cloud on your foot. Features new composition soul plates, UHMW anti rocker wheels and special edition 07 blackhearted colab wheels. $399 The popular kizer frame is back in a new form. The suspension allows for softer landings on gaps and a freestyle grind space. $135 Kizer suspension frames NEW Hyphy DVD! Hyphy 3. The latest instalment featuring the steez of Vinny Minton, Victor Arias, Ivan Narez and the smoothly edited section of Jon Morciglio. Watch for Josiah Blee and Sneaky, they are two upcoming kid skaters with amazing rail talent! $39 Available now Bayside Blades K2 Moto Extreme This skate is for recreational skaters who like to go fast. It holds 100mm wheels at the rear and 90mm at the front of frame giving you heaps to roll on and one of the smoothest rides available. $599 Continued next page Andrea Winzor The Tuesday Night Members Skate continues to roll along steadily each week with the first Tuesday of each month leaving from Brighton Baths and heading towards to St Kilda direction where we sometimes venture into Albert Park. This skate leaves the Baths at 7.30pm whereas for the remainder of the month, we leave from the shop at 7pm. Pictured are some of the regulars enjoying a rest stop and the sunset. It is a very sociable group with most staying around for bite to eat and a cheeky drink or two! Generally, we cover between 13 and 22km and it has been a great way for people to maintain their fitness during the darker winter months. The Saturday morning members skate continues to roll at it’s own pace. It is a shorter and slightly slower skate than the Tuesday Night Skate which means that skaters can develop their fitness and skating confidence without being thrown into the deep end! We encourage our Tuesday Night Skaters to participate as much as they can. One of our adult members, Michael who is pictured to the right, has shown rapid improvement from coming along each week. SPEED SKATING Over the Australia Day long weekend, Neil and I participated in the Southern Cross Speed Skating carnival. Another new participant was Shane Yost! Many of you know Shane from his coaching sessions at the Shed clinics and will know him as one of the best vert skaters in the world. He was certainly a dominating force and won plenty of cash and a big trophy. It was kinda weird to see Shane and Neil on a podium together! Just goes to show that over your skating life, there may be a time when you may want to try a different flavour of skating. It’s also quite humbling to going back to being a ‘beginner’ again. This carnival is a good springboard for the Australian Titles which will be held in Adelaide in early April and will be Neil and I first Aussies where we actually competing, not running a trade display. Exciting times ahead! In late January, Bayside Blades held the first of its Adult member’s nights at the Shed in Cranbourne. This is a FREE event for adult members and it was good to see some of regular recreational Tuesday Night Skate members come down to give the ramps a go! For myself, the last few years of speed training gave me a lot more balance to my skating, which then meant extra confidence! These Shed sessions will be held 3 to 4 times a year. We are having a night at Caribbean Rink, 1298 Ferntree Gully Road, Scoresby, on Saturday the 31st of March from 7.30 to 11. Cost is $7.50. Come along and be a rink rat for the night and mix it up with the well dressed (and behaved!!) teenagers that make a night of it as well. Learn some new moves from the rink regulars. MYBUY From now on, the shop will be offering interest free terms through MyBuy. If you are not a MyBuy member already, you can apply for a card here in the store. Of course, there will be certain conditions but it will be a bit like laybying some skates but taking them right away! Just ask one of the staff next time you’re in and if it suits you! Bayside Blades FREESTYLE SKATING In November last year, we were Upcoming Events graced with the delightful presence of Naomi Grigg (pictured th with Jenny) from the UK who can skate freestyle like you 24 March: Saturday 12 to 5. wouldn’t believe and to remind us that with skating, YOU NEVER Adult members Adventure STOP LEARNING! We do have it incredibly lucky here in Australia, especially Melbourne where we have plenty of decent skate parks and lots of trails. ICE SKATING I have been also speed training on ice since last July. Skating on ice is very similar to inline but there is not as much room for error as you are balancing on a blade that is less than a 1mm wide! For a lark, I did the State Titles in October at Bendigo! One of our other junior members also trains and did the State Titles and he is also a real whiz at the skate park too. Ice racing is an Olympic sport and on the 1st of April, there will be a talent identification day at Oakleigh rink for the 10 to 18 year olds. Please see the attached flyer for more details. ADVENTURE SKATE Neil will be hosting our first Adventure Skate for the year. This is FREE for our adult members. You will be catching a train to Glen Waverley and skating from there for a grand distance of just under 30km. There are a few ups and downs along the way so it is impeditive that you have good speed control. It is a fun skate! As you pass the Kooyong banked track, you will see where part of our Southern Cross comp was held. Please bring money for the train as well as drinks along the way. You will need to take flip flops for the train as skates cannot be worn on the train. Meet at the shop at 12 noon.
