KENTUCKY'S MIGHTY WURLITZER General Information Contact Information Nonprofit KENTUCKY'S MIGHTY WURLITZER Address PO Box 138 Lexington, KY 40588 0138 Phone (859) 559-7541 Email [email protected] Contact Name Steven Brown Web and Social Media Website Website Facebook Facebook Twitter Twitter At A Glance IRS Ruling Year 0 1 Statements & Search Criteria Statements Mission Statement Kentucky’s Mighty Wurlitzer’s mission is to conduct regular performances of this historic cinematic treasure, now a 3/18 Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ; by reinstalling this instrument in its original Kentucky Theatre home located in downtown Lexington, KY. This will be accomplished by ensuring the preservation through celebration of the historic tradition of the era of silent motion pictures, including the establishment of a regionally recognized Silent Film Festival, with live theatre organ accompaniment and public subscription concerts by local, regional and internationally recognized theatre organists for the enjoyment, education and cultural enrichment of the citizens of Lexington and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Background Statement Kentucky’s Mighty Wurlitzer (KMW) is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) Kentucky corporation whose mission is to fund, preserve, restore, reinstall, and operate the historic Kentucky Theater’s 3/18 Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ in its rightful original theatre home. This Project represents a contractual coalition of the University of Kentucky (owner of the Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ), the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG)(owner of the Kentucky Theatre), and the Kentucky Theatre Group, Inc (a for-profit theatre management group under contract with the LFUCG); all under the leadership and management of Kentucky’s Mighty Wurlitzer. Impact Statement ACCOMPLISHMENTS Kentucky’s Mighty Wurlitzer (KMW) is a unique coalition of the University of Kentucky, the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government, and the Kentucky Theatre Group, Inc; under the leadership and management of KMW. Kentucky’s Sole-Surviving Theatre Pipe Organ from a theatre is unique to this Mighty Wurlitzer. National Historical Significance for this Wurlitzer theatre organ was ensured when it was designated as an "Official Project" of Save America’s Treasures and is the only listed theatre organ project. National Project Significance was achieved by returning an original theatre pipe organ to its original theatre home! The Rudolph Wurlitzer Company, the world’s most prestigious theatre organ company, manufactured 2,234 theatre pipe organs (1910-34); of this total, approximately 46 original Wurlitzer theatre pipe organs remain in their original locations. Official Theatre Pipe Organ of The Commonwealth of Kentucky was achieved in 2005, when it was designated as such by the Kentucky Legislature. Kentucky Theatre’s Summer Classics Movie Series provides pre-movie concerts, featuring the temporary use of a Conn Theatre organ, which significantly enhances patron’s experience. Educational Benefits provides a demonstrated history of educational programs presented to public and private middle school students and educators. Education Plan is available for educators. GOALS Family Friendly Programs will be presented showcasing popular music and silent film, offering distinctively unique entertainment to all generations and ages. Subscription Concert Series will be established with a prestigious and affordable public concert series with the Wurlitzer theatre organ and nationally recognized organists. The Festival of Silents will establish a silent film festival, featuring Wurlitzer theatre organ accompaniment; which will be the premier event for the Kentucky Theatre's Anniversary Celebration. 2 Needs Statement KMW-TOP, Inc completed theWurlitzer Console Restoration and Rebuilding ($85,000) portion of the overall Phase "A" Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ Restoration and Rebuilding ($338,900). The remaining $253,900 of the scope of work will be funded by match-grant resources to be sought in 2014. Critical funding for the remainder of this scope of work is needed. Over the years KMW-TOP, Inc has submitted six (6) Save America's Treasures (SAT) grant applications in recent years and only the last FY2010 Grant Application received favorable review and supplemental committee comments, suitable for a follow-up SAT grant application FY2011. Unfortunately, SAT was cancelled by Tea & Republican Congressional parties! Phase "B" Kentucky Theatre Renovation & Construction ($360,000.00) grant writing will be started in Late November 2013. In a perfect world, our goal would be to have the Kentucky Theatre scope of work funds raised and the work completed to coincide with the planned shut-down of the Kentucky Theatre in spring of 2014. This sequencing overlap of Phase "A" and Phase "B" would minimize shuttered downtime of operations by the Kentucky Theatre Group, Inc. CEO/Executive Director Statement Refer to Statement from the Board Chair/President (below) for information. Board Chair Statement National Project Significance:This project returns an original theatre pipe organ to its original theatre home, representing the 9th occurrence in our collective history. The Rudolph Wurlitzer Company, the world’s most prestigious theatre organ company, manufactured it in 1922 as Wurlitzer’s very first Style "F" Opus 562; and was subsequently enlarged by the Wurlitzer Factory in 1925 (Job No. 703) with the addition of a 3-manual console and 6-additional ranks. Between 1910 and 1934, the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company produced 2,234 theatre pipe organs. Today, approximately 46 original Wurlitzer theatre pipe organs remain in their original theatre or public venue locations. Kentucky’s Sole-Surviving Theatre Pipe Organ:The Kentucky Theatre’s Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ remains as the sole-surviving theatre pipe organ from a theatre in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Official Theatre Pipe Organ of The Commonwealth of Kentucky:This 3/18 Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ has been designated (Senate Bill 148) as the "Official Theatre Pipe Organ of the Commonwealth of Kentucky" by the 2005 Legislature and signed into law by Governor Ernie Fletcher. National Historical Significance:The White House Millennium Committee and the National Trust for Historic Preservation designated the Kentucky Theatre’s 3/14 Mighty Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ (enlarged to a 3/18 Wurlitzer by this Project) as an "Official Project" of Save America’s Treasures in June 1999. This theatre organ is the only listed Theatre Pipe Organ Project to receive this special honor. Unfortunately, FOKT's executive committee excluded Kentucky's Mighty Wurlitzer from any disucssions, considerations or participation in their funding campaign strategy. So an additional shut-down is likely if Kentucky's Mighty Wurlitzer is not able to sequence the two projects into a signle construction period. Kentucky's Mighty Wurlitzer has demonstrated a 20-year history of dedicated fundraising and continues this commitment to ensure this project is completed with or without FOKT's support. Strategies Kentucky's Mighty Wurlitzer is in the process of exploring and consideration of using FoundationSource's national fundraising resources to ensure fundraising success is achieved within the time restraints of 1 to 2 years to achieve our fundraising goals. 5 Programs Programs The Golden Age of the Kentucky Theatre Description April 27, 2000 Program: KMW established its first annual program called The Golden Age of the Kentucky Theater, honoring the 1922 historic theater in downtown Lexington. The evening was truly an exceptional evening of family entertainment featuring two fabulous silent pictures, presented the way they were meant to be, with live theatre organ accompaniment. Unfortunately, due to the threat of a pending strike by educators and the uncertainty of availability or articipation by students and educators, the planned Middle School programs were cancelled. This was the last of the Middle School Programs due to increased transportation costs. Program underwriting was limited to donations ($350) received from KMW Board of Directors. Budget 5250 Population Served ,, Wings Celebration Description Wings was the 1927 First Academy Award for "Best Picture" and remains as one of the very best silent pictures of all time. Clark Wilson, the house organist at the Ohio Theatre (Columbus, Ohio) was the organist, who accompanied this silent picture on October 4, 2012 at the Kentucky Theatre. KMW installed a 3-manual Conn Theatre organ and two Leslie Tone cabinets for this event. The musical accompaniment was superb, as the aducdience celebrated this performance with a standing ovation at the conclusion of the silent picture. This was the finest silent picture presentation in the Kentucky Theatre since the end of the golden age of the movie palace and silent pictures in 1930. Kentucky's Mighty Wurlitzer obtained 16-program sponsors, a LexArts Grant ($2,500) and total ticket sales raising $9,057 in income with net expenses of $7,617; providing a net profit of $1,440. Population Served ,, Program Comments CEO Comments In mid-September 2012, Dr. John W. Landon graciously loaned Kentucky's Mighty Wurlitzer his 3-manual Conn theatre organ with two Leslie Tone Cabinets for use in the Kentucky Theatre until the 3/18 Mighty Wurlitzer is fully restored and reinstalled in the historic Kentucky Theatre. Kentucky’s Mighty Wurlitzer (KMW) continues to use this instrument for pre-show mini-concerts before the Friday evening feature picture and other performance needs throughout the year as needed, including the recent Secretariat movie premier. Since 2001, KMW has entertained audiences with 30-minute concerts on electronic theatre organs during the Summer Classics Film Series, which typically runs from Mid-May until Mid-September. Organists include Dr. John W. Landon at the console for the matinee pictures; with Dean McCleese, Brian Hunt, Tim Jones, Roland 8 Herzel and Gary Johnson at the console, 30-minutes prior to the evening feature pictures. The concerts conclude with the standing audience song-a-long of our state song My Old Kentucky Home. A Drop-A-Note Flyer (donation opportunity in the Kentucky theatre) with the lyrics printed on the reverse side, is available at the Kentucky Theatre’s concessions stand. KMW faces a continuing dilemma with the use electronic theatre organ instruments, including the former Rodgers Trio and newly installed Conn theatre organs, which provide less than a desirable recreation of the glorious and wondrous sound of an actual Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ. However, it is all we have available at this time, and the electronic instruments do make a difference in the patron's experience in the Kentucky Theatre. KMW continues diligent work, exploring every avenue of funding resources available through grants, foundations and benefactors. It is through these programs at the Kentucky Theatre that public education and awareness manifests itself in appositive manner. To date, we have demonstrated public support with approximately 1000 donors responsible for approximately $326,000 in funds for this Project. 9 Leadership & Staff CEO/Executive Director Executive Director H. Smith, Carlton Smith Pipe Organ Restorations, Indianapolis, IN (KMW-TOP, Inc's Project Technical Consultant and Restoration Specialist), "Project's of this type, especially in locations where theatre pipe organs do not exist or remain installed in local theatres, will take on average 15 to 20 years (nationally) to complete." "Also, just the mention of a pipe organ, let alone a theatre pipe organ restoration project to a uninformed public or private corporate foundation or grant resource, often brings grant rejections without undertanding the merits or national significance of what a project of this type would bring to a community and region through its benefit, musical enrichment, cultural enrichment and educational enjoyment of its citizens and students!" Steve Brown, KMW-TOP, Inc's president indicates that "approximately 1000 donors have contributed approximately $326,000 (February 1998 to July 2013) to this local theatre organ preservation project, which demonstrates an exceptionally strong local support from its citizens. Unfortunately, the available local grant resources and foundations have not provided the needed major-funding support or interest for a successful capital campaign! Hopefully, this will change in the future." 17 Documents Form 990s 990-EZ KMW_IRS990-EZ KMW_IRS990-EZ_2010 KMW_IRS990-EZ-FY2009 KMW_IRS990-EZ_FY2008 Created 10.26.2016.
