Spring 2016 - Christ the King School
Spring 2016 Published by Chr ist the King School for parents, g randparents, alumni and fr iends A COMMUNITY uniting s ch o o l , f a m i l y a n d f a i t h R ecently in an eNews letter to parents, I mentioned that May had become the new December because of all the activity associated with the last month of school. I later revised the statement to say that April and May are the new November and December, a blur of busy-ness based on all that occurs between then and the end of the school year. During this time classes showcase accomplishments of the year, and projects students have worked on for weeks culminate in a variety of productions such as third grade’s Authors’ Tea, fifth grade’s Country of Origin, and a fabulous Night for the Arts, spotlighting Middle School talent with performances by the 6th grade chorus, 7th grade Orff ensemble, 8th grade musicians, band, solo instrumental performances, and an exhibition of visual artwork and media. Students also participate in the Battle of the Books, a reading competition that begins at the school level and progresses to Archdiocesan competition, and a day at the High Museum. In addition to these activities that nurture and nourish our students’ educationally and creatively, the last school mass, as do all our school masses, fosters their spiritual growth and is always beautiful and poignant. Our second graders, dressed in their First Communion finery, lead the mass and the crowning of our Blessed Mother. Not just in April and May but throughout the school year, we strive for all that we do to be driven by our mission statement: Christ the King School creates a nurturing, Christ-centered environment based on its Catholic tradition of fostering academic excellence, individual responsibility, spirituality, and growth of the whole child, in order to spread the Good News of Jesus in word and deed. Our school and our students are flourishing, and you and your commitment to excellence in Catholic education play a large part in that success. Have a wonderful and safe summer. ~ Tricia Ward, Principal Focus on the Arts A component of the mission of CKS is growth of the whole child in order to spread the Good News of Jesus in word and deed. Aligning with this mission is a newly formed Arts Council. The Arts Council’s aim is to support and further appreciation and awareness for the arts at CKS, by exploring more opportunities for students to learn through the arts. CKS parents, Colleen Lane and Samantha Minutelli, along with a committee, are spearheading this effort. The Arts Council will focus on supporting arts in the curriculum, highlighting the arts in our school, implementing aesthetic improvements and additions, as well communicating opportunities to experience the arts throughout our city. (Continued page 2) (Focus on the Arts, continued from page 1) As part of this initiative, this year, and Ms. Diana Steele, art teachers, and Mrs. Mozelle Cole, music teacher, along with a group of parents from the Arts Council, visited Holy Innocence Episcopal School and the Lovett School to gather information on their art and music programming and learn how to enhance develop the CKS art department. In addition, CKS continues its partnership with the High Museum of Art to bring educators into the school, as well as allow students to explore their museum. A High Museum consultant has been meeting with Ms. Shaun Higgins, Curriculum Coordinator, and will work with the faculty and staff during preplanning in August to explore integrating more arts into the academic curriculum. This spring, Mrs. Cole introduced the first Night for the Arts with a standing room only crowd in Kenny Hall, which we hope will become an annual event. The evening included exhibited artwork and showcased the musical talents of students from grades 4-8. Colleen Lane and Samantha Minutelli are excited to continue their efforts next year and look forward to expanding ways to enrich the lives our CKS students. St. Pius *National Junior Honor Society 4 Christ the King School congratulated the Class of 2016 with school wide annual traditions starting with Clap Out, a celebratory lunch and yearbook signing, followed by graduation on the evening of May 23. .Following the example of Pope Francis, the CKS Class of 2016 is making a lasting impact with their year-end gift to the school. They will be investing $1,800 worth of plumbing updates to the toilets and urinals, saving a significant amount of water from the conventional units. The CKS Green committee was beyond thrilled with their decision and knows the impact will be significant and reduce operating costs annually for the school. CLASS 2O16 C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S 5 43 Years and Counting… Mrs. Phyllis Warner came to Christ the King School in 1973. The Media Center, where she has spent the majority of her career, has moved three times since she’s been here. When she first started, CKS did not have Kindergarten, and the Library was on the second floor of the Education building, where Mrs. Jackie Marcinko now teaches religion. In 1984, the Library moved to the d’Youville building, where Mrs. Rose Maksimowski’s office exists today. In 2001, the Library (now referred to as the Media Center) moved to its current location with the expansion of the Donaghue Center that included Kenny Hall, the lower level with the Media Center, facilities office, and 2nd grade classrooms. Mrs. Warner appreciates the many relationships she has formed over the years with students, parents and fellow employees. She is also very grateful that her three children were able to attend Christ the King School from first to eighth grade. Over the years, Mrs. Warner has been celebrated for her service to CKS. She remembers a party for her 25th Anniversary and has fond memories of reconnecting with people she hadn’t seen in a while. Last year, the year book was dedicated to her, and she was beyond thrilled. This year, Mrs. Alison Williams class dedicated their Country of Origin book to Mrs. Warner. Finally, the CKS faculty and staff selected Phyllis as the Archbishop’s Education Honoree. She says she loves Christ the King School and the great families and adorable students. “I guess that’s why I never quit. I like being here with the CKS community.” 43 years and counting…We love you Mrs. Warner. (left) Erin Driscoll and Danielle Wirtz are happy to share that the amount raised this year for the Gala was $215,000! Kudos to these ladies and the team of parent volunteers who made this event fabulous. 6 D evelopment Update We have had unprecedented success with this year’s Annual Fund. Led by our Annual Fund Chairs, Meg and Jon Fligg, and our Annual Fund volunteers, we remained focused on our financial goal exercising patience and personally asking for gifts, making this year’s Annual Fund the most successful to date. We are grateful to the support of our community, with the average gift per donor exceeding $905. The Annual Fund supports the gap between the cost to educate and the cost to operate with our biggest asset being our Faculty and Staff. 2015-2016 Annual Fund Goals . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $ 430,000 Parent Participation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 100% Faculty and Staff Participation . . . . . . . . . 100% Actual To Date (127% of Goal). . . . . . . . . $544,164 Parent Participation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 94% Faculty and Staff Participation . . . . . . . . . . . 100% The growth of the Endowment Fund continues to be successful with strong fiscal year contributions and market gain. The Cullum Owings Scholarship Fund has raised $8,084 this fiscal year. The Owen Stokes Scholarship Fund has their yearly event, Rock for Owen, and with contributions from that event and other donations, the fund has raised $1,665. Finally, the Sister Jean Liston Scholarship Fund has raised $1,030 this year. Gifts to date to the Endowment Fund . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $63,241* Market Value as of 05/06/2016. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $2,332,369 *not including an anticipated gift of $86,000 from proceeds from the Gala Y our Annual Fund dollars are delivering impact to the operating budget in many ways. An easy way to show impact is bragging about our awesome teachers who nurture students daily and help them grow in their academic and all around success during this school year at CKS. A few items that impact the overall success of our students and families may not be as sexy but are very important to upholding our mission. To provide a safe and secure environment, CKS hires off duty police officers who keep us safe as we turn vehicles left from Peachtree onto East Wesley to enter campus, and those who help teachers, students and parents cross Peachtree Way. In addition, we have updated the security cameras on campus. To provide an up-to-date technology experience, one on one devices in the Middle School, carts with laptops, and classroom sets of iPads are available for student use. There are also computers in all admin offices and classrooms. The Georgia Power bill and software licensing necessary to keep this technology going is costly. We appreciate all of the support of the Annual Fund. In big and small ways, each donor impacts our campus and all we do to educate the 564 students and 76 faculty entrusted to our care. 7 P RO F I L E of a GRADUATE Joe Reigner High School Education: St. Pius X Catholic High School High School Honors and Awards: Outstanding Class 2016 congratulations! My father, Roger, spent most of his childhood in Atlanta. He attended North Springs High School, served in the Navy for five years, and graduated from University of Georgia’s Law School. My older brother, Jack, graduated from CKS in 2008, and from St. Pius in 2012. My younger sister, Anna, graduated from CKS in 2015 and will be a sophomore at St. Pius this year. Favorite High School Class: Either Classics of Film and Literature, an English elective that focuses on the art and techniques of filmmaking, Advanced Guitar, which I took sophomore to senior year, or AP Literature. Favorite Book(s): East of Eden, by John Steinbeck, and Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer What’s next for you? I will be attending the University of Virginia, where I plan to double major in Business-Marketing and Music with a concentration in Classical Guitar. Wahoowa! Interesting Fact: I’m ambidextrous and, in Kindergarten (and maybe now), would try to color with two crayons at the same time, one in each hand. The level of education I received at CKS was absolutely phenomenal. When comparing myself and other CKS graduates to our new classmates in our freshman year, I could see how well we were prepared for the demands of high school, especially in English.
