Toasted Pecan Cole Slaw Biscuits with Butter and Jelly Southern Fried Chicken Baked Macaroni & Cheese Green Beans Peach Cobbler with Ice Cream Children’s Menu Chicken Legs & Pancakes Baked Mac-n-Cheese PB & J’s Fruit Salad First Thoughts Vince Lombardi, the legendary former coach of the Green Bay Packers, was once frustrated with the way that his team was playing. He gathered them in the locker room and said something amazing to a professional football team. He picked up a football and said, “Gentlemen, this is the football.” With that sentence, he drove his players back to the basics, to the fundamentals, to the very core of what they were doing. I think of the coach’s words as we prepare for the church conversation this Sunday night. Our talking will be about the next pastor of this great church. We will gather at 6:30 in the Fellowship Hall to have the first of two conversations about the next pastor of First Baptist Church. The Search Committee has asked me to lead these group meetings. Over the span of two nights (the second one is May 15) I will guide you to give input about things like the ministry priorities for the next pastor, the opportunities and challenges that a pastor will face over the next few years, the kind of preaching that speaks to your mind and heart, and the personal traits that you would want to see in the next pastor. To get your input on all of this, we will write some things down on paper and then we will talk about what we have written around the tables where we are seated. That method allows everyone the chance to share and to be heard. What is written down on paper will then be collected by the search committee and will be used to help develop a profile for the next pastor. Before we talk and listen to one another, we need to take a few moments and listen to the Bible. What is a pastor? You will share your thoughts about that very question in these two conversations. But first we need to hear from God. We really need our Coach to take us back to the fundamentals, to the core of our conversation. What does the Bible say about the role of a pastor? More important than all of our ideas on the subject is what we read in the scriptures. I will begin our time of sharing and listening by asking all of us to listen to the Bible. Do you know what the word “pastor” means? It is found only one time in the New Testament? Do you know where? What does the Bible teach us about the roles and responsibilities of a pastor? With that scriptural foundation, we will then offer our thoughts about how a pastor would live out these principles in First Baptist Church. That is the place where we must start. After all, how often do you really get to step back and think about what the Bible teaches about being a pastor? Just as Lombardi called for his players to step off of the playing field and be reintroduced to what a football was, we will step back and let God show us, “Ladies and gentlemen, this is a pastor.” I hope that you will join us on Sunday night as we talk and listen together. Psalm 46:10 Pastor Search Committee This coming Sunday evening will mark the first of two Church Conversations focused on the search for a new Pastor. The Pastor Search Committee has spent several weeks preparing the outline which David Hull will use to direct the topics. These are intended to gain information from the congregation that will be critical in shaping the direction the Committee will follow. As you have heard, the information gathered at this first meeting will be used to launch discussion at the second. We encourage you to be at both, but if that isn’t possible, please come to either as your schedule allows. If you cannot make either meeting or have personal comments to the Pastor Search Committee, there is an email established for that specific purpose. [email protected] Comments from this address come directly to the Committee. Hope to see you Sunday evening. - Wade Blount, Chair Child care is offered during the Conversation for babies through 5th grade. AED locations are: Daniel Building, main level next to elevator Fellowship Hall MAC Building Adult Building, 1st floor In an effort to provide even more security for our children and staff, we have installed electronic access and control mechanisms to the Preschool Building, Children’s Building, and Daniel Building doors.
