Radiation Oncology Department To Be Named
the Hitt Family Center for Radiation Oncology
In August 2012, Virginia Hospital Center broke ground on a $6.5 million
radiation oncology expansion project, which will significantly enhance the
Hospital’s capacity to provide the most advanced radiation oncology treatments
available to cancer patients.
Upon completion, slated for the fourth quarter of 2013, the Department
of Radiation Oncology will be renamed the Hitt Family Center for Radiation
Oncology in recognition of the Hitt family’s gift to the Campaign for Radiation
Oncology. “Increasing access to advanced cancer treatments is a cause that
is very important to my family and our community,” said Russell Hitt. “We are
very proud to be able to support Virginia Hospital Center and value having
world-class healthcare right here in northern Virginia.”
The new radiation oncology treatment suite will be equipped with a stateof-the-art TrueBeamTM linear accelerator which provides unprecedented speed
and accuracy. Patients will experience fewer side effects, more precise treatments sparing surrounding healthy tissue, and a more rapid return to health.

Welcome to Cornerstone
Welcome to Cornerstone, Virginia Hospital Center Foundation’s
newsletter dedicated to sharing our tradition of philanthropy.
As a patient, we often use numbers and statistics to
understand our health….What is my body mass index? Is my
blood pressure reading in a healthy range? Is my morning blood
sugar reading too high or too low? Like our patients, Virginia
Hospital Center undergoes regular and rigorous evaluation to
determine the Hospital’s “health.”
One of the most valuable indicators of our performance is
what our patients say about their experience at Virginia Hospital
Center. Every hospital inpatient receives a follow-up survey that
asks key questions about their experience. As an indication of our
commitment to providing the best healthcare available in our region,
Virginia Hospital Center now ranks #1 in the Commonwealth of
Virginia for patient satisfaction, receiving the highest score for overall
patient satisfaction and likelihood to recommend when compared to
80 other Virginia hospitals.
We endeavor to earn your confidence each day by delivering access
to nationally-recognized physicians, cutting-edge medical technology,
personalized care, and by striving to be the “best” hospital. Thank you
for your support of our mission and for sharing our commitment to making
world-class healthcare available in our community. Our Patient Satisfaction Ratings Compared to Other Nearby Virginia Hospitals*

Your Gifts at Work
Calypso ® System
Virginia Hospital Center is one of a handful of
hospitals on the east coast to offer the new Calypso®
System for treatment of prostate cancer. Calypso, also
known as “GPS for the Body,“ treats prostate cancer
with fewer side effects, enhancing the quality of life and
outcomes for our patients. Recent studies indicate that
patients who undergo treatment with Calypso go on to
live longer, healthier lives in comparison to outcomes with
similar treatments.
2
How does Calypso work?
Using miniaturized, implanted devices called beacon
transponders, the Calypso system continuously and accurately
tracks the location of cancerous tumors. The beacons are
implanted and tracked with a 4D tracking system, so if the
tumor moves out of range during radiation treatment, the
radiation beam turns off until it comes back into range again.
This innovative technology keeps radiation focused on the
tumor, protecting surrounding healthy tissue.
As part of our commitment to making world-class care
available close to home, Virginia Hospital Center is one of the
only sites offering Calypso to provide beacon implantation

PROJECT GIVE HOPE
Inspires and Supports Neonatal I
On Tuesday, June 19, 2012, in a ceremony led by
Virginia Hospital Center chaplain Graham Bardsley,
Virginia Hospital Center dedicated Project Give
Hope to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Located directly outside of the NICU,
Project Give Hope is a 70-foot mural wall that
features the portraits of NICU “alumni”. Each
portrait tells the birth story of these former
NICU infants and their life today. The portraits
are framed by a whimsical mural that “grows”
alongside our patients.
To support the NICU, mural elements such
as a flower, tree or animal can be named in honor
of a loved one. Project Give Hope has raised over
$19,500 to date, and will be an ongoing source of
support for the NICU.
To make a Project Give Hope mural dedication,
please contact the Foundation at 703.717.4438
or [email protected]. The Project Give Hope Wall is filled with the beautiful faces of
former Virginia Hospital Center NICU patients and whimsical
animals (like the raccoon above), flowers, birds and insects.
A special thanks to photographer Jen Gentry and Amy Tubbs of
Murals by Amy for donating their time and talent to this project.
Thank you to the Washington Forrest Foundation for their
generous grant to support Project Give Hope.
A Celebration of Nursing Excellence: The Friends o
On May 10, 2012, the John T. Hazel, MD
Conference Center was filled to capacity as proud
family members and colleagues of honored nurses
gathered for the Friends of Nursing Awards
Ceremony. As part of national Week of the Nurse,
Virginia Hospital Center Foundation and the Division
of Nursing join together to recognize nursing
excellence at Virginia Hospital Center.
More than $120,000 in nursing scholarships,
awards for clinical excellence, and professional
development funds were presented to 6 nursing students, 19 nurses, and 6 hospital care teams. This annual
celebration provides a unique and moving opportunity
to be part of the enthusiasm and appreciation of our
award-winning nurses. Friends of Nursing makes a
tangible difference in both the lives of our nurses and the
patients they care for each day.
Friends of Nursing is funded entirely by philanthropy and
was established in 1989 with a $250,000 contribution by the
Caruthers family. In 2012, the Caruthers family added to their
legacy by establishing the Friends of Health Professionals
Program. This program provides critically needed funds for
professional development and education of allied health
professionals.
Today, Friends of Nursing is a $3 million endowment
comprised of 40 individual funds investing in the education of
individuals who want to enter the nursing profession, supporting
novice nurses, recognizing the achievements of veteran nurses
and promoting advanced nursing certification. In 2013, Friends
of Nursing will take place on May 8th. “The Friends of Nursing program is the best example of the lasting
relationship forged between our nurses and our community.”

Christopher Carter Foundation (CCF): In Memoriam and
Now in its fourth year of partnership with Virginia Hospital Center, the Christopher
Carter Foundation (CCF) was formed following the untimely death of Christopher
Carter, at age 31, from undiagnosed diabetes. Through the dedication and hard work
of a large network of CCF friends and supporters, their living memorial to Chris is
providing ongoing resources to diagnose, prevent and treat diabetes.
Even last summer’s derecho storm couldn’t dampen the spirits and commitment of
the CCF. The second annual Christopher Carter Foundation Memorial 5K was cancelled
due to storm damage yet still raised over $12,000 for diabetes education, prevention,
and treatment at Virginia Hospital Center.
On October 5, the CCF held their 3rd annual golf tournament raising nearly $29,000
for the cause and bringing their annual fundraising to $38,000. Since inception, the CCF
has raised more than $112,000 in support of Virginia Hospital Center.
Thank you, Christopher Carter Foundation friends and supporters for your time, energy,
and compassion. CCF RACE

Why did your family choose to support
the Radiation Oncology Campaign?
Virginia Hospital Center has been our family’s hospital since it
opened. We have long and strong ties to Arlington and are
grateful for the care we have received at the Hospital, as well
as care for our children and our grandchildren. When we were
asked to support the expansion of cancer care at the Hospital,
we wanted to be part of bringing the next generation of cancer
treatments to our community.
What is your hope for cancer care and
healthcare overall in Arlington?
Both personally and professionally, we have been involved in
expanding and growing our community. Having access to
outstanding healthcare services is a big part of the quality of life
where you live and our hope is for Virginia Hospital Center to be
an outstanding resource for generations to come.
What does being philanthropic
mean to you and your family?
It means supporting causes that you believe in and being able to
see firsthand how your gift makes a difference. When the Hitt
Family Center for Radiation Oncology opens later this year, it will
be a very proud moment for our family. 11

Medical Brigade Provides Healthcare and Hope
Since 1999, the Virginia Hospital Center Medical Brigade has made an annual medical mission trip to Comayagua, Honduras,
providing access to lifesaving healthcare services to Hondurans in need. The most recent Medical Brigade mission took place from
October 27 to November 3, 2012, performing 79 life-changing surgeries. The “vision brigade” team dispensed 2,980 eyeglasses
and provided general ophthalmology services. The team also trained twelve community health workers for the Remote Village
Project, empowering these health workers to diagnose and treat common health issues including respiratory and skin infections.
“Our Medical Brigade volunteers combine their
skills, resources, and most importantly, compassion,
to make a life-altering impact on the Honduran
people,” said Medical Brigade founder, Barry Byer,
MD. “Every time we return to Honduras, we get
to experience firsthand the high impact of our
mission and see how our sustainable healthcare
models improve every aspect of life in the
communities we serve.”

How Can I Support Virginia Hospital Center and Arlington Pediatric Center?
Gifts of Cash
Gifts in Tribute
This is the most common form of giving. Your contribution is
tax-deductible and can be made by check or credit card.
Gifts to the Foundation are an excellent way to honor or memorialize
a family member, friend or colleague. Please use the contribution
form below to make your tribute gift.
Giving Online
To contribute online, visit www.virginiahospitalcenter.com/giving
or arlpedcen.org.
Gifts of Stock or Appreciated Securities
If you contribute stock or other appreciated securities to the
Foundation, you will be entitled to a tax deduction for the full
market value of the stock or securities while avoiding capital gains
tax. This type of gift is particularly attractive if the stock or
securities are not yielding annual income, have appreciated in value,
and would otherwise be subject to capital gains tax if sold directly
in the market. For more information, please contact Amy Hauser at
703.717.4436 or email [email protected].
Matching Gifts
Did you know that many employers will match your gift to the
Foundation? Ask your company’s Human Resources Department
about how to make your gift go twice as far.

is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to raising funds to advance healthcare excellence at Virginia Hospital Center.
TAKE “STOCK” IN YOUR CHARITABLE GIVING
SUPPORT HEALTHCARE EXCELLENCE AT VIRGINIA HOSPITAL CENTER
In 2013, consider new ways of supporting your
favorite charity. A higher capital gains tax rate along
with increased income tax rates for many individuals
and families mean that gifts of appreciated stock
and other securities are more attractive than ever.
e IRA Charitable Rollover was also extended
through December 31, 2013 and allows individuals
age 70½ and older to make direct transfers to their
favorite charities without having to count the
transfers as income for federal income tax purposes.
To learn more about opportunities to give, including
appreciated securities, IRA Charitable Rollovers
and Life Income Gifts, please visit our website at
www.virginiahospitalcenter.com/charitablegiving and
visit our legacy planning section. For assistance with
legacy planning questions, please contact Amy
Hauser at 703.717.4436
