Broadcast & Media Communications Television 2001 Foreword Allow me to introduce the graduating class of 2001. If you are unfamiliar with the British Columbia Institute of Technology, I would like to give you an overview of the calibre of our graduates. Upon completion, our graduate has the experience necessary to begin working, and to deliver a quality service immediately. The training process includes practical experience gained by regularly attending local industry facilities during their second year. These include: Television Stations, Post Production Facilities, Educational Television productions and Freelance client projects. I believe your potential BCIT employees arrive with a broad spectrum of awareness and I am proud to have played a role in their career development. Should you wish to inquire about anyone from our graduating class, please call (604) 432-8844, and ask for Robert Riskin. Thank you. Broadcast & Media Communications Page 1 Are you interested in hiring an individual who has received excellent training for the broadcast and video production industry? After two long and dedicated years, encompassing pre-planning, experience in both studio and field productions, and the latest in digital postproduction technology, our BCIT grads are prepared to enter many fields, and are not limited only to video production. From digital audio mixing, to computer graphics and effects, to writing for drama or documentaries, they exhibit a wide variety of skills valuable to any production organization. For all of the new skills our graduates have learned, they realize that attitude is the most important ingredient for success. They have demonstrated commitment to their productions, their fellow students, and our industry. Now we ask that you consider them for employment. The program at BCIT concentrates on the production tools and operational methods of a video production house, television broadcast station, or cable facility. Students gain experience in producing television and video productions, so that they may work their way through a variety of diverse positions. Now that these students are about to graduate from BCIT’s intensive program, they are fully qualified to pursue successful careers in video production and related industries. Page 2 Broadcast & Media Communications BCIT has been able to provide quality training to hundreds of graduates who are now employed from coast to coast within Canada and around the world. The heart of our program is our physical plant. We accommodate approximately 80 first and second year TV students in 2 full fax studios, with access to Betacam ENG and EFP packages and state-of-theart linear and nonlinear editing facilities. Industry asked that our students be trained on industry-standard digital post-production platforms, so Avid video editing and DigiDesign ProTools audio post-production have become an integral part of our program. By the time they have completed the program, students have amassed numerous hours of experience on these systems! In the first year, students are introduced to the basics of video production, and produce short commercials written by themselves to practise their skills and concentrate on academic subjects By the second year, students are producing corporate video projects for clients in studio or on location. In the second year we also concentrate more heavily on shooting, editing, and producing corporate, documentary, and entertainment programming to expose students to a wide variety of career choices and challenges. BCIT Graduates are trained using the same equipment and facilities as the production and postproduction industry! Broadcast & Media Communications Page 3 We are pleased to announce that for the eleventh year, our weekly BCIT Magazine is being aired on cable stations throughout the Lower Mainland. We work closely with Broadcast Journalism students to produce feature stories, cover news events, and integrate everything into a weekly half-hour newscast. The journalists provide the story ideas, and the television production crew provides the technical expertise for ENG Shooting and Editing. BCIT Magazine is a joint effort between Journalism and Television with the Television students building the format for the program, including bumpers, headlines, and graphics. Every student has the opportunity to fulfill the duties associated with each position. This production puts our television crews and our journalists onto the streets of Vancouver, and into the firing lines with the Vancouver media. Page 4 Broadcast & Media Communications Since 1964, BCIT Broadcast & Media Communications department has enjoyed industry support for its Practicum program. During the two year program, our students have gained both theoretical and hands-on practical experience. They have had a taste of the real world through numerous extensive practicums in various film and video related operations. In their first year, the students spend time observing and participating in the day-to-day operations of television stations and post-production houses throughout the province. In the second year, the students begin more extensive industry rotations, making their own contacts and specializing in their career choices. Before entering the workforce and as part of their last term, each student spends four weeks or more in the industy role of their choice, helping with the tasks for which they are best suited. Broadcast & Media Communications Page 5 Under the Broadcast Communications Co-operative Education Program, many of our students have entered full-time jobs in industry after completion of their third term. This program allows qualified students to enter full-time paid positions as they arise in the industry. Their academic studies are completed by correspondence and practical studies are completed and evaluated in the field by employers. We know the learning process continues after graduation. We cover the “basics”, then turn our students over to you. Whether it is under the Practicum or Co-Op Education Program we are committed to giving you the best employees available. Television graduates come ready, willing, and able to work. Page 6 Broadcast & Media Communications Take a few minutes to read the following pages.
