There will be a practical component in this course – the basics of all cameras and how they need to be used to make artful images, but the how is less important than the what. The goal of the course is to motivate an attitude toward composition and technique that opens the door to artful photography – photography that you would be happy to see in a frame and hanging in a prominent location in a public space. A working knowledge of how to use your camera is recommended. Afraid to put pen to paper? This course will focus on the process of writing and the pleasure in hearing other’s stories. There will be no editing advice! Try this user-friendly workshop. By writing in a safe, non-critical environment you will avoid the “editor-in-your-head” and discover you have something to say. Call 1-866-734-6252 or register online at www.viu.ca/eldercollege NEW At the beginning of the First World War, the poet-soldiers who rushed to the trenches were educated in literature at the universities of Great Britain and Europe. A hundred years later, we venerate their war poems as definitive of poetry for the “modernity” of our recent past. We also have images of violence, brutality, and destruction, technologically immortalized on our behalf. Is there a difference? In 1931, the League of Nations invited Einstein to correspond with another thinker of his choice on a topic of his choosing. Einstein chose Freud on the topic of war. In January 1933, their correspondence was published in the form of a pamphlet under the title Why War? When Hitler came to power, two months later, circulation was banned. Only 2,000 copies were printed in English, most of which were lost during the war. The text for this course is Why War? A copy of the text is available online in a pdf format.
