We had a packed house at our meeting on Wednesday. All due to Earnie Shavers being our guest speaker. There were a number of guests who attended school with him and even more who were huge fans. We were delighted to see so many come out to hear him speak to us. Rotary Motto Service Above Self 4-Way Test Of the things we think, say or do: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendship? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Avenues of Service Club Service Vocational Service Community Service International Service Youth Service Nick Verina performed another magic trick this week with his assistant, Roxy Vaughn. Who knew she was so talented! They did a great job getting our meeting off to a fun start. While there were too many guests to list here, a few of those attending with our members are listed below. They are: Jesse Matheson, Cindy’s brother; Molly Halliday from Seven Seventeen Credit Union; Joyce Faulkner, Bob’s wife; Jason Vaughn, Roxy’s husband and softball champ; John and Melissa Rentz, and students from JFK High School. Rotarians with makeups: One – Donohoe, Campolito and Bednar. Two – Bollas and Vaughn. Slice of the Valley – The Pizza Challenge will be held on Saturday, January 16th, at St. Demetrios Hall. Please mark your calendars and begin inviting your family, friends, and colleagues. If you would like to be a part of organizing this event, please see Cheryl Parsons or Tony Torisk at an upcoming meeting. If you go to our website you will see information posted there that will help you answer any questions your friends or family may ask. A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to support the Rescue Mission’s Women’s Shelter, equip one or two k-9 vehicles for the Warren Police Department, and provide scholarships to disabled veterans so they may attend programs at Solid Rock Therapeutic Riding Center. Membership Dues – All members are required to pay their January dues by December 31. Any member not paying their dues by that date will find their membership terminated. Every Rotarian, Every Year - The Annual Fund is the primary source of funding for the programs of The Rotary Foundation. In order for us to continue doing so much good in the world, it is necessary for Every Rotarian to participate in the program and to support our Foundation Every Year. We ask that all Warren Rotarians give annually to the Every Rotarian, Every Year Campaign. Donations can be made in one lump sum of $100, $10 per month (September through June), or $50 two times a year added on to your dues payment. Checks, cash and credit cards are accepted. Those wanting to be a part of doing good in the world, should see Dallas Woodall or Cheryl Oblinger for more information. Rotary Blood Drive – The blood drive sponsored by Warren Rotary will take place on Wednesday, December 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Packard Music Hall. Donors and volunteers are needed. We will again be raffling off gas cards to those who donate. Volunteers will be asked to work at the raffle table in one-hour shifts. If you can help, contact Chris Stephenson at [email protected]. Posters will be available next week for you to post in your office to encourage colleagues to donate. Registration Help Needed – Bob Sauer has informed us he will no longer be able to help at the Registration table each week. We are in need of another volunteer. If you are willing to help, please see Bob Sauer ASAP. Rotary Code of Conduct As a Rotarian, I will: Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life. Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect. Use my professional skills through Rotary to mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people’s quality of life in my community and the world. Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians. JFK High School Interact Club A Certificate of Organization was presented today to the President and Vice President of the Interact Club at JFK High School. As Rotarians know, we have had an Interact Club at Harding High School for years. Last year, JFK expressed interest in forming one of their own and the students immediately embraced the idea of becoming part of Rotary. We could not be more delighted and look forward to hearing more about the projects they undertake to make the community a better place. Honorary Member Named Bazetta Police Officer John Rentz was named as an Honorary Member of Warren Rotary and presented with a Certificate of Honorary Membership at this week’s meeting. Officer Rentz is a former member of the US Army, having been honorably discharged in 1994. He pursued a Criminal Justice degree at Youngstown State University where he graduated in 2003. He has been with Bazetta Police Department since 2006 and has assisted victims of domestic violence, deescalated situations what could have resulted in victims taking their own lives, and provided educational programs to high school juniors and seniors on the negative effects of distracted driving. Most recently, he has presented to soon-to-be released inmates at the Forest State Correctional Facility in Pennsylvania about the after-effects of crimes. Not only does Officer Rentz serve his community through his career in law enforcement, he has gone above and beyond the call of duty to make a difference in the lives of many. We were honored to have him become an Honorary Member of our club on the recommendation of board member, Roxy Vaughn, and hope to see him often at Rotary events and programs held throughout the community. Earnie Shavers Presented with Key to the City Mayor Doug Franklin attended Wednesday’s meeting and presented Earnie Shavers with a key to the City of Warren. Not only were we happy to see the Mayor, it was great to see a former resident of Trumbull County come home again and take a trip down memory lane with his former school mates. We thank the Mayor for stopping by and look forward to seeing him again next week for the Children’s Christmas Party. Boxing Great—Earnie Shavers Earnie Dee Shaver, born August 31, 1945, best known as Earnie Shavers, is an American former two-time world heavyweight title challenger. He is considered by most boxing experts to be the hardest-punching knockout artist of all time. Having knocked out or stopped fifty of his opponents inside three rounds, his one-punch power remains legendary in the boxing community. In a career spanning 26 years, Shavers defeated three world champions in Vicente Rondon, Jimmy Ellis and Ken Norton, as well as top contenders such as Jimmy Young and Joe Bugner. Shavers' status as the hardest puncher of all time was backed up by former opponents such as Norton, Young, Bugner, Ron Lyle, Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes, and James Tillis. Known as the "Black Destroyer," Shavers compiled an impressive record, winning 44 of his first 47 fights by knockout. His KO streak included 27 consecutive knockouts, of which 20 victories were in the first round. He began to rise through the ranks of the heavyweight division after he hired a Cleveland-based promoter and excon named Don King to be his manager. His wins included a novice Jimmy Young who would later become a top contender. Stepping up the class of opposition, he came to public prominence with a first round KO of one time WBA heavyweight champion Jimmy Ellis. His progress was halted when he was KO'd in the first round by "White Hope" Jerry Quarry which was followed by Rotary Club Foundation Board President Chris Shape Vice President George Thompson SecretaryTreasurer Cheryl Oblinger Mike Bollas Andy Bednar Diane Sauer Chris Stephenson Contact us Rotary Club of Warren P. Shavers then had a thunderous match with hard-hitting Ron Lyle but was stopped after 6 brutal rounds. He then knocked out hard hitter Howard King and beat Roy Williams in a back and forward battle in which Shavers was nearly knocked out. The latter Shavers always said it was one of the toughest of his whole career. Shavers fought Muhammad Ali at Madison Square Garden on September 29, 1977. Coming into the bout, Shavers had a record of 54-5-1, with 52 knockouts. Ali nicknamed Shavers "The Acorn" because of his shaved bald head, unlike early appearances. The fight was shown in prime time broadcast television by NBC, which rarely did prime time fights. In the second round, Shavers hurt Ali badly with an overhand right. Ali exaggerated his motions enough that it seemed he might be play acting and Shavers hesitated. On the scorecard they exchanged rounds. Ali won the fifth decisively. To win the fight, Ali had to survive the last three rounds. Shavers, whose stamina was suspect before the fight, came alive in the 13th round. In the 14th, he battered Ali about the ring. Before the 15th, (according to the story by Sports Illustrated ) "Ali was on very wobbly legs." In a furious final round, the two men tagged each other, but Ali closed strongly, nearly dropping Shavers in the last 20 seconds. He won a unanimous decision. The fight made the cover of Sports Illustrated, with "ALI'S DESPERATE HOUR" featuring a photograph of Shavers scoring with an overhand right. Ali later said Shavers was the hardest puncher he ever faced, famously stating "Earnie hit me so hard, it shook my kinfolk back in Africa." Shavers retired in 1983 after retinal problems were discovered. After retirement, he became an ordained Christian minister and moved to Phoenix, where he preached for many years. During the early 1980s while preparing for the feature film Rocky III, Sylvester Stallone explored the possibility of using a real heavyweight boxer in the role of James "Clubber" Lang by inviting Earnie Shavers to spar with him. Shavers initially refused to hit Stallone with anything other than a soft jab. This frustrated Stallone, who told Shavers, "C'mon Earnie, show me something real." Earnie responded by punching him once near the liver, forcing an immediate retirement. Stallone later said: "that nearly killed me. I went straight to the men's room and threw up". In 2003, Shavers was ranked number 10 among boxing's greatest punchers in history by Ring Magazine. Within the sport of boxing, he is widely considered to be the hardest puncher of all time. Earnie now travels extensively to talk to young people about how to make the right decisions in life. Following his presentation to Rotarians and their guests, he was scheduled to speak to students at Inspiring Minds. Triple Jackpot The Grand Jackpot This Week - $1,049 This Week’s Winner – A Guest
