MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
MISSION
The mission of the USF System Women in Leadership &
Philanthropy program is to engage and educate visionary leaders
and philanthropists to make a difference for women throughout
the USF System and the community.
Dear Members and Friends of WLP,
I am proud to have served you for the past year as your Chair and as a Founding Member
of this organization, an extraordinary group of visionaries who have chosen WLP as their
conduit for impacting the next generation of leaders and philanthropists and contributing
to academic scholarship and research with life-changing implications for women
throughout the world.
Due in no small part to the collective strength and contributions of our members,
we are pleased to celebrate a number of impressive accomplishments this year:
SOURCES OF WLP FUNDS

• O
ur annual dues-paying membership has grown from 114 members to 154, a 35%

increase in the last fiscal year. At the close of calendar year 2014, membership has
grown to a record 185 members. Our Corporate Member program has grown from
one member (Florida Blue) in July 2013 to five members (BNYMellon Wealth Management, Community Foundation of Tampa Bay,
Florida Blue, Florida Hospital & Sagicor) by June 2014, a 400% increase. At the close of calendar year 2014, this number has grown
to 8 Corporate Members adding SunTrust, Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Tampa Bay Rays.
• Our
9th Annual WLP Fall Symposium was an unprecedented success. More than 720 people joined together for a day of learning,
laughter and empowerment. Over $245,000 was raised at this signature event; after expenses, these funds will be allocated to
enhance our endowments and WLP programs.
• W
e developed, in collaboration with the Office of Donor Relations & Foundation Scholarships, an aggressive WLP Endowed
Scholarship Donor Stewardship Plan. While only in the initial implementation stage, this initiative has resulted in an increase of
over $41,000 in additional scholarship commitments. When fully implemented, we anticipate that this program will yield great
dividends for WLP and the USF System.
• W
e successfully launched WLP’s first-ever Mentoring Initiative, in partnership with the USF Center for Leadership & Civic
Engagement and USF Athletics’ Mentoring U-Selmon Style.
The structure and function of the USF WLP program requires a
consistent source of spendable income. Because the majority
of gifts to WLP are to restricted endowed funds, our primary
sources of operating income include annual membership
contributions, sponsorships and ticket sales from the Annual
Fall Symposium, and contributions from the USF Faculty & Staff
Campaign. WLP also benefits from significant staff salary and
budgetary support provided by the USF Foundation.
MEMBERSHIP
USF WLP’s groundwork was established by our founding
members whose initial investments allow us to fulfill our
mission. By establishing endowed scholarship funds,
contributing to the WLP endowed scholarship, and building
the program endowment, these visionary individuals and
corporations provided WLP the strong basis for the tremendous
growth and impact that typifies the program today.

MEMBERSHIP GROWTH
The chart below illustrates the growth in
membership by category. With the base
of support from Founding Members
and significant increases in Endowment
and Annual members, WLP is stronger
than ever. Our membership in the
Annual category has increased in overall
membership of 35%.
Today, members contributing at the endowment level ($25,000 or above) join our list of lifetime members. Annual
members ($1,000 per year and $500 per year for those 35 and younger) and corporate members ($5,000 per year)
support WLP programmatic offerings and outreach initiatives and help grow the principal of the WLP Endowed
Scholarship fund.

In 2013-14, WLP successfully launched our first-ever Corporate Member program. Our Corporate Member program has
grown from one member (Florida Blue) in July 2013 to eight members, including BNYMellon Wealth Management,

We continue to distinguish ourselves by engaging in theoretical and practical activities that further our mission, such

IMPACT OF YOUR INVESTMENT
SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS
More than $220,000 in scholarship awards has been distributed to over
100 students since WLP’s founding in 2005. These scholarship awards,
paired with the unique mentoring and engagement opportunities that
WLP affords our recipients, provide opportunities for worthy students to
continue their education and fulfill their dream of completing their degree
at a leading public research university. In collaboration with Office of Donor
Relations & Foundation Scholarships, we developed an aggressive WLP
Endowed Scholarship Donor Stewardship Plan. Though only in the initial
implementation
stage, this initiative has resulted in an increase of over $41,000 in
additional scholarship commitments. When fully implemented, we
anticipate that this program will yield great dividends for WLP and
the University as a whole.
Endowed scholarship funds exist in perpetuity. To achieve the balance
between making awards and sustaining principal growth, WLP adheres
to the USF Foundation spending policy established annually by the
Investment Committee of the Foundation Board of Directors. A
percentage of earnings on each fund are awarded in the spring for
students enrolled in the following fall semester. The number of WLP
endowed scholarship opportunities grows in relation to the number of
members contributing at the endowment level. Many WLP members who
contribute at the endowment level have established a named scholarship
to honor a special person or to serve a defined group of USF students.

AN INVESTMENT IN STUDENT SUCCESS
The WLP Scholarship program has impacted the overall success of our student recipients in a way that is admirable within the
State University System. Within the USF System, the 97% graduation rate of our scholarship recipients is bested only by one
program (The Aripoli Scholars), and is well above the state average of 63%. The success of our students is directly attributed
to their scholarship award, but more importantly to the formal and informal mentorship they receive from their scholarship
donors and other WLP members. It also comes from the unique engagement and enhancement opportunities afforded them
by their affiliation with our organization.

“Kelsey Shook is a USF graduate and
received a Bachelors Degree in
Psychology with minor in Leadership.
She is pursuing a career in Higher
Education and Student Affairs.
Kelsey has a heart for volunteering
and hopes to one day travel to third
world countries to make a difference
in the lives of others. When asked her
plans for involvement with WLP after graduation, she stated “I
will continue to support women and women’s initiatives and
endeavors in my surrounding community. I hope to one day
have the capacity to donate what I can to WLP at USF to aid
other USF women in reaching their goals.”

occasion and has also been the recipient of the USF Scholar’s
Award and the History of Achievement Award. She is also a
proud member of the Zeta Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Inc, of which Carolyn House Stewart is the
immediate past international president.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR WOMEN THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY
The USF WLP Faculty Research Award provides an annual grant to USF System faculty whose research and creative efforts
focus on women and issues affecting women. This award is presented in the spring of each year through a competitive
process, with the recipient receiving a one-time $5,000 award to support their research as well as an honorary lifetime
membership in WLP. To date, WLP has awarded eight grants to deserving faculty members whose research helps to support
and advance women throughout the world.

WLP creates opportunities each year for members to learn about leadership and philanthropy, as well as the university and
its community impact through various events and programs. WLP’s signature event, the Annual Fall Symposium, provides a
chance for members of the Tampa Bay community to gather, share leadership lessons and learn from leading women in fields
such as business, journalism, arts and entertainment, public health and other areas.
WLP honors visionary leaders and philanthropists throughout the community doing extraordinary things to make Tampa Bay
a better place for women to live and work. With the Community Leadership Award, we showcase individual excellence in
leadership as demonstrated by outstanding initiative, impact of work, and inspiration to others. We publicly affirm present
achievements, seek to encourage further work on the part of the recipients, and hope to motivate others to follow their lead in
service to the Tampa Bay communities.
ELIZABETH FOWLER
2014 COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AWARD RECIPIENT
Elizabeth Fowler worked in the Corporate
Banking division of Bank of America in
Tampa, Florida for 13 years. Upon
the formation of the Park Foundation,
Inc. in 1995 (funded by the late
Roy H. Park), Elizabeth resigned
from Bank of America as a Senior
Vice President to serve as a director
and
the treasurer of the Park Foundation,
where she was responsible for the investments of the Park
Foundation assets. Elizabeth now serves as a director with her
father, Roy H. Park, Jr. and her brother, Roy H. Park III. She
is also the treasurer and a director of the Triad Foundation.
In Tampa, Elizabeth is very active in nonprofit work and is
currently serving on the Frameworks of Tampa Bay Board of
Directors, the Academy Prep Board of Directors, the Lowry
Park Zoo Endowment Board, the Junior League of Tampa
Community Advisory Board and the UNC School of Journalism
and Mass Communications Foundation Board.

LEE LEAVENGOOD ‘73
2014 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RECIPIENT
Lee Bird Leavengood was born in Monticello, Florida
in 1928. After graduating from USF in 1973 with a
Master’s degree as a non-traditional student, Lee’s
passion for “lifelong education” was ignited and
she became actively involved at the University of
South Florida as a volunteer, a board member of
the USF Foundation, and as an administrator. A
leader in her field, Lee was involved in the early years
of
of USF to make sure that non-traditional-aged students,
especially women, had access to the wealth of Higher Education resources
that USF brought to the Tampa Bay community. With a professional career that
spans nearly three decades at USF, Ms. Leavengood spearheaded the USF
Division of Senior Program and initiated and coordinated three major senior
programs in the greater Tampa Bay area: USF SeniorNet Learning Center, USF
Learning in Retirement Institute (an affiliate of Elderhostel Institute Network),
and the Tuition Waiver Program for Senior Citizens. Lee has been honored with
numerous awards and commendations over her lifetime including the USF
President’s Fellow Medallion, Girls Scouts “Women of Distinction” Award, and
the Tampa Bay Lightning Foundation “Community Hero” award. Lee was the
first female member of the USF Foundation Board of Directors and is an active
member of the Athena Society, a Founding Member of the Florida Women’s

2013 ANNUAL FALL WLP SYMPOSIUM
“
Former White House press secretary Dee Dee Myers (pictured at right) addressed a
sold-out crowd at the 8th Annual WLP Symposium sponsored by Florida Blue, held at
A La Carte Event Pavilion on Thursday, October 24, 2013. The energy in the room was
palpable and it was easy to feel the connection among the more than 600 attendees
who gathered to discuss women in global leadership.
Dee Dee closed her luncheon keynote with a homework assignment for women.
“Pay attention to your words,” she said. “Listen for lack of confidence, passing off
credit you deserve.” Participants seemed eager to do their homework. In addition to
Myers’ talk, panel sessions featuring local women and USF alumnae who are leaders
in global business, environmentalism, humanitarian issues and philanthropy inspired
conversations about women working in partnership with one another to help improve
the community and encourage others around the globe. Women left feeling energized
and united in the cause to help support women and improve their community and the
world, underscoring what WLP is all about: women supporting women!
The WLP Symposium raised more than $140,000 to support WLP’s efforts to provide
scholarships, faculty research awards, and enhanced mentorship opportunities for
students and young professionals.

Barbara Sparks-McGlinchy ‘83, ‘91, whose service to women in the community
reflects the mission and values of WLP, was named the recipient of the 2013 WLP
Community Leadership Award. Additionally, the inaugural WLP Community Leadership
Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Mrs. Louise Lykes Ferguson to
acknowledge and honor her tremendous efforts and remarkable lifelong success in
making a difference for women in the Tampa Bay region.
Receiving a scholarship literally changed my life. WLP has helped
me out tremendously in my academic career and personal life. The
organization has renewed my hope in the world and reminded me that
your past never determines your future. I am so proud to be involved
with an organization that is making a huge impact on women in our
community. One day, I hope to become a member of WLP and join this
remarkable group of individuals whom I look up to. I want to have the
chance to help carry on the legacy of the founding members.
