editorial
Dear seafaring colleagues,
With this fiscal year’s mid of 3rd quarter, we
are pleased to be able to convey some good
news in this issue of The Bridge Magazine. In
the last few weeks, economic indicators have
pointed to a significant improvement in the
economic environment and a correspondingly
positive effect on the shipping industry.
HAMBURGER LLOYD SHORE TO SHIP
According to AXS-Alphaliner there are currently only 150 unemployed vessels worldwide.
This corresponds to a capacity of 274,000
TEU and is the lowest in the last 19 months!
In contrast to many of our competitors, Hamburger Lloyd has managed to keep its fleets
in virtual full employment. We’ve also managed to charter out our three newbuildings;
RHL FELICITAS, RHL FIDELITAS and RHL FIDUCIA. All vessels have been fixed for 12 months
with a further 12 month option to CSAV
(Compania Sud Americana de Vapores S.A.),
a Chilean shipping line. We took delivery of
RHL FELICITAS in March (s. page 04) and the
christening ceremony took place in Shanghai. On June 2nd, RHL FIDELITAS joined the
fleet. You can read more about it on page 06.
Furthermore, we’re looking forward to
closer collaboration with our sister company,
Wappen-Reederei, with whom we’ve set up a
new crew management company. Get more
background details on WLCM Crewmanagement on page 02.
And last, but not least, we, along with our
sister shipping company Wappen-Reederei,
moved to our new premises on 8th of July.
To find out more about Astraturm and the
cooperation between Hamburger Lloyd and
Wappen-Reederei read below.
We hope you’ll enjoy reading this issue of
The Bridge and we look forward to continuing
good cooperation between the staff on land
and at sea.
Cordially,
Harald Block
Getting together

How it all began
Wappen-Reederei GmbH & Co. KG was
founded in 2002, and Hamburger Lloyd
GmbH & CO KG was set up by experienced
shipowners and traders in 2007. Both shipping companies have quickly established
themselves worldwide through their management of technologically challenging
and innovative tankers and container ships.
Since the end of 2008 there has been close
cooperation between the companies, which
are associated to Hansa Hamburg Shipping
International. While Wappen-Reederei specialized in the tanker business, Hamburger
Lloyd concentrated on the group’s container
ships. To put the given synergy effect to better
use, which was the two company’s main aim,

At the beginning of 2010 the two companies have set up WLCM Wappen Lloyd Crewmanagement to manage the acquisition
and scheduling of officers and crew for both
shipping companies.
To optimize the cooperation between
RHL Hamburger Lloyd GmbH & CO KG and
Wappen-Reederei GmbH & Co. KG shipping
companies even further and to improve
communication and create shortcuts, the
management decided to move to new premises already last year. This happened at
the beginning of July 2010 when the companies successfully moved to the Astraturm
in the heart of St. Pauli, close to Hamburg
Harbour. Since then the companies have
enjoyed not only better and simplified collaboration, but also an ultra-modern office
premises, state-of-the art equipment and a
beautiful view from its two floors.
The decision to invest in a new environment
for the companies and tie their bonds over
an extended period during these financially
difficult times is a clear sign of their commitment to each other, their community spirit
and the cooperation between the two financially independent companies.

important task. We know that a loyal, caring
crew with not only the necessary knowledge, but also the spirit and the will to
operate their ships in a professional manner
makes all the difference!
When Hamburger Lloyd first started business activities, we had little choice but to
use a big crewing manager to man our vessels as quickly as crew were needed. Meanwhile we’ve been operating for more than
two years, and our fleet is growing as is our
awareness that a qualified and motivated
crew is a key factor on the path to becoming an excellent shipping company. This
is certainly something one can’t take for
granted from a big crew manager. We had
to realize that the crews’ loyalty lay normally
with its manager and not with the ship hiring the crew. Also the quality delivered by
the big crewing companies is not always as
promised.
It is the guy who cares who can help run
a ship properly and economically. It is this
guy we want and we want him to work with
us as a partner in a team. Offering long
term perspective, career development and
the opportunities to improve knowledge
through relevant courses and training makes most sense for us when this is carried
out with our own crews, where we can see
the benefit of such measures.
The only way out was to do the human resource management ourselves. Together
with our sister company Wappen Reederei,
we founded WLCM to take care of this most
We know that there are many excellent
sailors out there and we are certain that
this is the right way to convince them to

we started, we have been receiving a lot
of positive feedback from our officers and

right path.
This is of course not something that can be

over the years. But if we do not take the first
small step today, we will never get started.

crew manager. He came up with the idea of
what he calls the “Nucleus”. The idea is simply
to start with one good guy and getting him
to pass on his knowledge and spirit to the
next guy. After sailing together for a while
they get transferred to different ships but
still work and behave in the same way, setting an excellent example and teaching the
next good guy. Slowly but surely the pool
of excellence will grow, and as it does, the
rate of growth will accelerate. After only
one year of doing so we can clearly see an
improvement, and the number of sailors
working with us has grown. With WLCM we
have now the possibility to keep these people
in the team and to offer them the working
environment they deserve.
Needless to say, founding a crewing company involves a lot of work and by establishing our own way, taking the needs of our
major shareholders RHL and Wappen into
consideration, some problems and mishaps
may occur. But we accept the challenge of
course and we will establish a proper way to
prove our words and to prove that the idea
of the Nucleus works.

RHL Reederei Hamburger Lloyd GmbH &
CO KG has added a new ship to its fleet.
Delivery was taken of the first of three
Panamax container ships, with a stowage
capacity of 5100 TEU, on 31st March in
Shanghai, making its fleet eight strong.
This vessel, Hamburger Lloyd’s 8th, is 294
meters by 32.2 meters, has a draught of 13,
50 meters when carrying 63,500 tons and is
fitted with 385 reefer-container connectors.
Hamburger Lloyd was founded in 2006 by a
group of experienced Hamburger shipping
companies and merchants.
New building no. 2431, built at Jiangnan
Chengxing Heavy Industries’ shipyard, was
christened “RHL Felicitas” by Philippe Brault
of Barry Rogliano Salles (Paris) Managing
Partner’s wife, Laure Brault, and the vessel
was then put into service under the leadership of the German captain Helmut Wende.
Like its sister vessels, “RHL Fidelitas“ (2432),
from the beginning of June 2010, and “RHL
Fiducia“ (2433), from the end of July, “RHL
Felicitas has been fixed to the South American shipping company CSAV Compania
SudAmericana de Vapores (Valparaiso) for
12 months at a rate of $7,000/day with a
further 12-month option at $19,000/day.
The $70 m ship, sailing under a Liberian flag,
set sail from Shanghai to Xingang, its first
port of loading. CSAV will be employing the
new “RHL“ship on a route from China via the
Middle East to the western Mediterranean.

We received the sad news of the sudden and unexpected death of
chartering for their fleet. Through its group
of shareholder, there is a close association
between the company and Hansa Hamburg
Shipping International Issuing House and
the Warburg network.
RHL is expecting a further series of new
buildings from China at the end of 2011.
According to Hauke Pane, RHL’s Managing
Partner, four container ships of 259.8 by
37.3 meters, and a draught of 12.5 meters at
57,500 tons are to be put into service by the
end of 2012. These ships will be of a newly
developed post-Panamax type with nominal capacity for 4,620 TEU and a comparatively high stowage capacity of 3,650 TEU.
The “RHL Conscentia”, “RHL Concordia” and
“RHL Calliditas” will be fitted with reefer sockets
for 600 40-foot reefer containers. They are
designed to sail at a cruising speed of 23.5
knots.

Hamburger Lloyd’s 2nd 5,100 TEU New Build from China
Delivery was taken of the 5,100 TEU container ship “RHL Fidelitas” from Jiangnan
Chengxing Heavy Industry. The 294 meterlong container ship started a one-year
time charter with CSAV.
Hamburger Lloyd took delivery of its 2nd
5,100 TEU new build from Jiangnan Chengxing Heavy Industry on Wednesday 2nd
June 2010. The “RHL Fidelitas” (construction number 2432) built at the Jiangnan

approx. $70m, is on a 1-year charter with a
1-year extension option, to Compania Sud
Americana de Vapores (CSAV) and will be
deployed in Asia and in the Mediterranian.
The “RHL Fidelitas”, under the command of
Captain Dlacic, has started employment
on 14.06.2010 and sailed from Xingang on
Chengxing Island nearby the Shanghai (Pudong)“, its 1st port of call.
Hamburger Lloyd took delivery of “RHL Felicitas“ last march (see page 4). “RHL Fidelitas”, Hamburger Lloyd’s 10th ship is an exact
sister vessel and is 294 m long, 32 meters
wide and when carrying 63.500 tons, has
a draft of 13,50 meter. She can also carry
3.350 TEU at 14ts homogenously load. Her
four 1.800kW Daihatsu 6 DK-28 Auxiliaries
Engines will supply the power to cool up to
385 FEU - reefer containers. All the three vessels of the so called “F-Class “ (RHL Felicitas,
RHL Fidelitas and RHL Fiducia”) are flying the
flag of Liberia and are being classified by GL
Germanischer Lloyd. The “F” stands for “fast”
because this class is powered by an 45.760
kW strong MAN B&W Main engine (Type
8K98MC) enabling them to cruise at a maximum speed of 25,2 knots.
Rendezvous at sea, RHL Felicitas met her sister ship RHL Fidelitas at sea on her way to Port Klang, 28th

Dear Crewmembers and friends,
Hamburger Lloyd took over seven ships
during the past 7 months and furthermore recently moved office, that’s the reason
why all of you had to wait longer than
usual for the 7th edition of “The Bridge”.
We very much regret this delay and hopefully will manage to delivery this year’s
3rd issue, “The Bridge No. 8”, on time mid
October.
We’re always keen to hear from you and
kindly invite you to send in photos, articles
or whatever else you wish to have published. Any contribution from you, our seafarers, would be very much appreciated!

Alpha Lubricator
One of the biggest threads for our environment is the excessive use of oil. Whilst the
vessels’ fuel consumption is mainly in the
hand of the charterer, the consumption of
lubricating oils is in the responsibility of
the vessels owner. It is our responsibility to
reduce the amount of oil used as much as
possible.
In respect of cylinder oil, a first step was
done by equipping all our vessels with Alpha
Lubricators; that system allows every chief
engineer and his crew to make considerable
savings. For a correct using it is essential that
the basics of the system are understood and
that it is working without failure.
engine history (liners/piston rings during
running in). During loads lower than 25%
MCR or during manoeuvring the lubrication
level has to be raised by 25%, only half an
hour after the engine is on continuous service rpm it can be lowered again to its original setting. To achieve the possible lowest
cylinder oil consumption it is essential that
the alpha lubricators and related equipment
is working correctly. On a regular basis (maximum 6 month) period the high and low
pressure accumulators N2 pressure has to be
tested. Wrong pressure settings at the accumulators or damaged non return valves at
the lubrication quills are effecting the lubrication of the liners.
For a proper lubrication only 0.60 g/kWh are
necessary, this is equivalent to an HMI setting of 55. This setting has to be adjusted to
higher levels due to sulphur content of the
fuel oil, alkality of the cylinder oil (BN 40, 50
or 70), the engine load (less than 25%) and
Failures in the setting are not easy to detect
and it needs well qualified and motivated
engineers to do that. To detect failures it
is necessary to regularly measure exactly
the consumption and compare it with the
theoretical consumption during this period.
Therefore we have the cylinder consumption
report. In a second step cylinder liner and
the piston crown, skirt and rings condition
have to be monitored. With regular inspections it will become obvious which alpha
lubricators are not working correctly. It has
to be pointed out that after some month of
checking by our very determined chief engineer Dr. Helmers the settings oat the different cylinders have not been all straight
any more but were varying several digits,
the reason for this was beside above described
failures was the different power distribution
between the individual cylinders. Constant
monitoring allowed him to reduce the feed
rate and the daily consumption was cut significantly.
Over or under lubrication leads to an increased wear on liners and piston rings, it is
therefore essential that all parameters are
monitored on a daily basis, to enable a safe
and cost effective engine operation.

I specialized in Ship Management at the
old London Polytechnics, which was called
London Guildhall University at my time.
Once the studies were over, I planned a 6
months experience stint at the operations
department of a newly established Hamburg ship management company, linked
to a Hamburg Fund House. The six months
became 8 years. Meanwhile I had promoted
from the Commercial department via DPA/
CSO to the Head of the Crewing department,
having collected a lot of good and bad experiences, flight miles, friends and anecdotes.
I was born in Hamburg on 12.07.1974, as
eldest son of a Brazilian father and a German mother, and ever since I somehow
have been involved in shipping – bringing
forward a three generation old relation to
the maritime business.
After my enjoyable years as a teen and
young adult in the sunny and exciting Rio
de Janeiro, I have worked in my father’s office on different S&P projects as well as on
assisting Greek Owners that were recommissioning vessels from the laid-up Lloyd
Brasiliero fleet.
I decided to improve my knowledge of
shipping and to get the needed certification. So I left Rio de Janeiro in order to
It was time to move on and I joined a small
project cargo brokerage company of a
friend in the southern outskirts of Hamburg, with the objective of a return to my
original plan of working in the commercial
side of shipping.
Then, like out of the blue, the opportunity
arose to join some well-known names in
the Hamburg shipping community at the
Chartering and Operations department
of “RHL Reederei Hamburger Lloyd”, and I
took the chance and have proudly joined
the “Hamburger Lloyd” – family.

The presented project and the challenge to
establish a new company were very delightful and so it only took me some minutes to
accept the job. Some days later I picked up
my laptop at “RHL” and have joined the already
existing “WLCM”-Team (see page 2). Thus I was
back to crewing with the usual enthusiasm
and ambitions in order to bring out the best
in each and every team member.
In between the audits, the crew changes,
the flights and late office nights all over the
years, I somehow managed to find a pretty
woman who was crazy enough to tie the
knot for life with me and to be at my side.
In addition to my happiness she made me
the best gift of all, my 6 year old daughter
and my 3 year old son. Now the four of us
live happily in Hamburg close to the place,
where I was born and we enjoy every free
minute we have together.
