Serizawa Keisuke 120th Anniversary Exhibition
Named a Living National Treasure for his mastery of the kataezome stencil-dyeing technique, Serizawa Keisuke (1895–1984) first
became involved in the Japanese Folk Crafts Movement thanks to a meeting with its founder, Yanagi Muneyoshi. Serizawa is best
known for his achievement in adapting bingata, the traditional stencil dyeing practiced in Okinawa, and making it the basis for his
own unique style of textile design. Looking at his extraordinarily varied creativity in the round, it becomes clear that he cannot be
understood merely as a dyer but should be viewed as a designer of genius who built a whole visual world through the magic of color
and form.
Held to mark the 120th anniversary of Serizawa Keisuke’s birth, this exhibition is divided into two sections, “Serizawa Keisuke as
Designer: A Many-sided Creative Genius” and “Serizawa Keisuke as Collector: A Keen Eye for Global Arts and Crafts.” Taken
together, the two sections offer visitors the chance to explore in depth both Serizawa’s aesthetic consciousness and his artistic
sensibility.
Section One
Serizawa Keisuke as Designer: A Many-sided Creative Genius
The works by Serizawa Keisuke featured in this exhibition give us an overwhelming sense of his skill as a textile craftsman and the
richness of his aesthetic vision. As we look at them, an almost magical world of color and form unfolds before us, brought into being
through the artist’s creative originality, lively sensitivity, and versatile design sense.
Every one of Serizawa’s creations in the exhibition—including kimonos, curtains, and works in many other formats—confirms his
excellence as a designer. The same aesthetic vision and sensitivity that we see in these masterpieces is apparent in the varied works
of art and craft that Serizawa collected throughout his life.
In this first section of the exhibition you will see a wide range of pieces that reflect Serizawa’s artistic concerns and values, almost as
if you were reaching into the storage chest of his visual consciousness, opening the drawers, and pulling out the works one by one.

Section Two
Serizawa Keisuke as Collector: A Keen Eye for Global Arts and Crafts
In this section we introduce selected works from Serizawa Keisuke’s collection of
arts and crafts from Japan and the rest of world, with the emphasis on works that
moved him and stimulated his aesthetic consciousness.
