FINAL 2014 WCF Annual Report
Building A Lasting Legacy WAYNE COUNTY FOUNDATION Annual Report 2014 Ben and Lanette Young have created endowed funds in communities where they have lived and worked. Two of them are administered by the Wayne County Foundation. 1 | Wayne County, Indiana, Foundation, Inc. Annual Report 2014 Building A Future of Giving He came from a family of ‘meager means’ and was the second of nine children. She came from a more affluent family and was one of two children. She was expected to attend college. He was the first in his family to attain a degree. She learned to give back at an early age. He never saw that modeled in his home. But regardless of their differing backgrounds, together, they agree – philanthropy is important to them. Ben and Lanette Young have created seven endowments in the various communities where they have worked and lived, and from where they ‘have taken treasures.’ From Nebraska where Lanette grew up, to Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina and Indiana, where the Youngs both worked for colleges and universities, they have created permanent funds to benefit future generations. Ben credits his service on the Wayne County Foundation board for opening his eyes to the value of endowments. “We want to do something now, while we’re alive, that will outlast our time here,” he said. Two of their funds are at the Wayne County Foundation. The most recent, the Benjamin F. and Lanette E. Young Student Scholarship Fund Benefiting Ivy Tech Community College Richmond Region and Indiana University East, will serve students who have completed an Associate’s Degree at the Richmond Ivy Tech campus and are continuing on toward a Bachelor’s Degree at IU East. “It’s important to us to see the student succeed when they complete the Associate’s Degree. We want to help them continue on to earn their Bachelors here in our community,” Ben added. While the purposes of the funds they have established are varied, the Youngs agree that giving back, whether that’s a continuation of a family tradition or the start of a new one, will continue to be at the center of their lives together. waynecountyfoundation.org | 2 Building By Giving Back Max Brown, whose family goes back several generations in Hagerstown, established the Hagerstown Hometown Fund last year with an initial contribution of $100,000 and an additional $50,000 from Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow, an initiative of Lilly Endowment Inc. The stated purpose of the fund is to “provide support for organizations, programs and initiatives to improve the quality of life of Hagerstown residents, especially with respect to education and social services.” A return to Hagerstown for his 50-year Hagerstown High School reunion in 2011 sparked the idea for the fund. During the event, the high school’s principal spoke about changes in the economy and in family structures and the rise of poverty and homelessness in the community. From that, the idea for the Hagerstown Hometown Fund was born. Brown, who now lives in Columbus, Ohio, with his wife Lenore, had a career in journalism, publishing and printing. He and Lenore established CM Media in 1975 and over the next thirty-two years the company grew to include 24 newspapers, multiple magazines and specialty publications, and a commercial printing company. Max hopes others will help continue to grow the Fund and add to the legacy he wishes to see created for his hometown. 3 | Wayne County, Indiana, Foundation, Inc. Annual Report 2014 Recognizing Excellence Ruth J. Wickemeyer Award For Community Service Aileen Wickett-Harris For over twenty years, Aileen Wickett-Harris has quietly addressed the issue of hunger in Wayne County. As Coordinator of the Community Kitchen outreach ministry at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Aileen has overseen the serving of thousands of hot meals to guests in need of food or fellowship since the Kitchen opened in September 1994. Through her networks, she has increased the volunteer base, obtained in-kind donations, and helped raise funds for the operations of the Kitchen. In her nomination letter, the Reverend Susan Bennett said, “Aileen’s ministry is one of service in the name of Christ. She has a compassionate heart and a modest spirit and is guided by her strong Christian ideals.” Aileen also organizes a monthly Community Dinner at her home church, Webster United Methodist Church, where she also serves as Lay Leader, Sunday School teacher, and Bible Study leader. Her significant personal gifts have benefited numerous local organizations in Wayne County including the Richmond Art Museum, Girls Inc., Richmond Symphony Orchestra, and Wayne County Historical Museum. She has given without want of recognition or fanfare, preferring to quietly impact the programs in the spirit of true philanthropy.” Prior to his passing, Dr. Frank Adney shared this generous giving philosophy with his wife. Now, she continues that tradition by supporting programs that benefit children and education, and the arts and culture in our community. When asked about her giving, Mrs. Adney said her goal in giving is twofold: to help others and to inspire future philanthropy. waynecountyfoundation.org | 4 A Million Dollar Match Up Last year forty local organizations participated in the Foundation’s Challenge Match. Collectively they raised $792,580 which, added to the match offered by the Foundation and twelve Challenge Match Sponsors, resulted in a community campaign that raised $1,023,950 in a twelve-day period. 2014 was the first year that every participating organization exceeded their match goals. These goals corresponded to the size of the organization’s budget and the strength of their proposal to leverage the Foundation’s match. Larger organizations were eligible for up to $10,000 in matching dollars from the Foundation; smaller organizations up to $5,000. Levi Coffin House Nestled along a busy state highway in the quiet town of Fountain City, Indiana, sits the unpretentious Levi Coffin House. If walls could talk, this home would share decades of secrets from its time as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Soon that story will have a new chapter: the Levi Coffin House Interpretive Center is being built using state funding, many generous contributions, and support from the Wayne County Foundation. Leveraging funds was a theme for the Coffin House in 2014. Early in the year, they received a $25,000 grant from the Macy Museum Fund at the Foundation. This helped garner state funds which were offered on a matching basis. Throughout the year, individuals challenged their friends, the community, and other organizations to match their personal giving. Last fall the Coffin House’s participation in the Challenge Match resulted in nearly $20,000 of additional support on a $5,000 match goal. Challenging, leveraging, growing, and investing together. That’s the path the Levi Coffin House is taking to remember our past and create a living history for the next generation. Challenge Match Participants and the Amount They Raised Amigos $19,900 Birth-to-Five $19,385 Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County $118,771 Children’s Justice and Advocacy Center $11,804 Christian Charities of Richmond and WC $13,412 Circle U Help Center $23,248 Communities In Schools $25,080 Community Food Pantry $34,329 5 | Wayne County, Indiana, Foundation, Inc. Jeffers Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County What happens when you match a match with a match and a match? You raise over $118,000! That’s what the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County did during the 2014 Challenge Match period. Building on the Foundation’s challenge with a match offered by First Bank Richmond and another offered by Richmond Baking Company, the Club was able to triple their donors’ gifts and raise $118,771 to support the operations and programs of the Club that now serves around 2,500 youngsters in 5 different locations. Richmond Symphony Orchestra The King Family Donor Advised Fund Paul and Pat Lingle Richmond Baking The Rosar Donor Advised Fund Steven E. and Margie Stoller Dave and Carla Stidham US Bank Wayne Bank and Trust Company Similarly, the Symphony also met and exceeded the Foundation’s challenge by acquiring an additional $10,000 anonymous donation to be used to multiply gifts given during the Challenge Match period. That gift, combined with the Challenge Match funds and gifts from the community, resulted in over $55,403 in contributions for the Symphony during the 12-day period. As a former Wayne County Foundation board member, he understood there was a way to use the Foundation to achieve his goals with fewer complications. Vigran Family Foundation Board of Directors By creating a supporting organization, the Vigran Family Foundation, he and his family retained many of the benefits of a private foundation while leveraging many other benefits. In addition to a $1 million establishing gift in 2001, a very generous bequest came to the Vigran Family Foundation on Stan’s passing in 2004. Today, the Vigran Family Foundation supports the charitable purposes of the Wayne County Foundation, and especially those advancing theater and the arts, higher education, healthcare, and Jewish causes. During his lifetime, Vic Jose was passionate about literacy. He was especially concerned with third graders’ ability to read, which is a predictor of their overall success as adults. Putting his ‘money where his mouth was,’ Vic championed a number of education and literacy-related programs, including Every Child Can Read and the Third Grade Academy. At his passing, a life insurance policy, which Vic had earlier gifted to the Foundation, helped create an endowed fund to benefit early childhood literacy programs throughout the county. While Vic was alive, he paid the insurance premium which afforded him an additional tax deduction. At his passing, the policy matured and created the permanent fund, a living legacy to one man who followed his passion in life and in death. Because bequests are gifts made on a donor’s passing, in their will or estate plan, they represent a final declaration of what was important to them during life. Many times they serve to create a lasting legacy for the benefit of future generations. In the last few years, the Foundation has received a greaterthan-usual number of bequests – and a number that have been notable for their size or circumstance. While the larger dollar amounts usually grab the headlines, a bequest can be for any specific dollar value… a percentage of one’s estate… or the amount that remains after all of a decedent’s other obligations have been fulfilled. Perhaps most importantly, a bequest can be directed to the charitable program or purpose that is most important to the donor. Bequests to the Wayne County Foundation are usually used to create permanent funds designed to ensure the donor’s intent is fulfilled for years and years to come. These might be in the form of… • scholarships, relating to a particular purpose or set of selection criteria; • organization-designated funds, benefitting the work of one or more specific not-for-profit agencies; • field of interest funds, that can advance a range of programs or initiatives relating to certain charitable themes; or • unrestricted funds to be used to address the most pressing needs over time or in support of opportunities as they become apparent. The Wayne County Foundation is grateful to everyone who has thought to support our community through a bequest or other testamentary gift. The generosity that is expressed is very meaningful… and very important to making a lasting difference in the life of our community. Charlie Matthews and his sister, Maxine, left bequests to the Foundation to establish funds to support the arts, education, animal interests, and the environment. Notable recent bequests to the Foundation: • • Chris Benton gifted a portion of his IRA to benefit the work of the Starr-Gennett Foundation. Eunice E. Dare bequeathed approximately $250,000 to the Foundation with no restrictions. This will result in an additional $12,000 in current grantmaking annually. • Henriette Pierson left $50,000 in her will to establish a scholarship for Richmond High School students to pursue teaching careers. • More than $100,000 came to the Foundation from the Robert Rhoads Credit Shelter Trust on the death of his widow, Betty. It was directed into an unrestricted fund he established through his will at the time of his passing in 2008. • Patricia Wedding left the residual of her estate to two local charities. Half of the portion directed to the Foundation is in support of a previously-established scholarship; the other half is for a new field-of-interest fund. waynecountyfoundation.org | 16 Scholarship Funds New Scholarship Funds Henriette Pierson Scholarship Fund ($50,000) Created by a bequest from Henriette Pierson, this fund will provide a scholarship to a Richmond High School student, giving preference to a student pursuing a degree leading to a teaching career. When the match is achieved in full, the Foundation will add approximately $1 million to its unrestricted asset pool and see an additional $1.5 million in support of designated giving interests. By our current spending policy, this will yield an additional $125,000 annually to the Foundation’s grant-making. Ways to Give There are many ways to support the important work of the Foundation or your favorite local charity. Each offers unique opportunities, one of which is bound to be just right for your personal circumstances. Please contact the Foundation to learn more. Bequests One of the most popular and simplest ways to give - a bequest - allows you to create a legacy without taking cash out of your pocket during your lifetime. If you are considering a bequest, let us explain the many options you have and how we will assure your gift is used as intended. Beneficiary Designations You can also name the Foundation as a beneficiary of your retirement plan or life insurance policy. Doing so is generally a simple process that can be easily modified at any time to meet your changing needs. Moreover, using retirement assets to fund your charitable interests is often a tax-wise strategy. Charitable Gift Annuities Charitable Gift Annuities allow you to make a donation and receive income for life. They offer a competitive rate of return and qualify the donor for a current income tax deduction. Gift Annuities are often a good option for charitably-minded older adults. Donor Advised Funds A donor advised fund is perfect for the donor who wants to stay involved with how their gift is used. It’s a great way to help teach children or grandchildren about responsible philanthropy, too. Endowments If you’d like to create a lasting legacy, consider a named, endowed fund. Establishing an endowed fund offers ongoing support for the charity of your choice and provides you with valuable tax benefits. Endowed funds may also be created in honor or memory of a loved one or friend to ensure they are remembered forever. If you are unable to fund the entire amount at once, consider an Acorn Fund which allows you to build an endowment over time. Anonymously Perhaps you’re a very private person who wants to support our community but doesn’t want everyone else to know. Gifts made anonymously to the Foundation ensure your privacy, as well as your charitable intent. waynecountyfoundation.org | 26 A Message from our Board Chair On behalf of the Wayne County Foundation Board of Directors, thank you for taking the time to read through the milestones, stories and well-deserved recognition that flow throughout this annual report. I think you’ll agree it’s a moving testament to the power of philanthropy. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating this work, appreciating the outcomes that result, and continuing the conversation about how to enhance the spirit of community and improve the quality of life here. The philanthropic spirit in our community is strong and manifests itself in so many ways that we are probably always at risk of taking some part of it for granted. It feels important and worthwhile to pause, step back and reflect on the kindness, innovation, leadership, and future-thinking that goes on here every day. The Board thanks the Foundation’s staff and volunteers for all of their hard work, and most of all we thank you for including the Wayne County Foundation in your own efforts to make Wayne County a better place. More accurately, they illustrate the impact generous people can have when they actively pursue their charitable interests. • We created 28 new funds – the most in any one year – including 7 organization designated funds, 5 field of interest funds, 4 unrestricted funds, and 3 scholarships. $ 3,131,937 $ 3,369,154 $ 1,038,157 $ 2,227,262 $ 1,265,393 $ 2,275,356 • More than $3.1 million in new gifts and receivables, reflecting a robust mix of current contributions, bequests, and split-interest gifts… and a wide range of charitable interests. $ 1,404,115 We also look to a set of operational metrics to gauge our progress. Once again, we’re pleased to report they indicate another very strong year. 2008 | 2009 | 2010 | 2011 | 2012 | 2013 | 2014 • Approximately $1.5 million worth of grants and distributions to local charitable organizations, including nearly $500,000 worth of individual scholarships. Grants Awarded (last 7 years) • The 2014 Challenge Match Initiative helped forty local organizations generate more than $1 million in a 12-day period, including $231,000 provided by the Foundation and its 12 Challenge Match Partners. • A $1.8 million net investment return helped push the Foundation’s total assets under management as of December 31 to an all-time high of $40 million – about a 7.8% increase over the course of the year. 29 | Wayne County, Indiana, Foundation, Inc. Annual Report 2014 $ 1,538,391 $ 1,371,106 $ 1,063,876 $ 2,711,271 $ 1,088,119 $ 1,244,414 Finally, 2014 will be remembered for the sixth round of the Lilly Endowment’s Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT) program, making the Foundation eligible to receive $1 million to match local support of certain endowed funds.
