Even though I live in Nova Scotia, I hope all the teams play well and go home with a piece of Halifax in their hearts. But for me, I was overwhelmed by the generosity - you have already given so much to the Canadian Paraplegic Association of Nova Scotia. My husband was injured in a car accident in 2011 and as a result is permanently paralyzed from the waist down. Although hard to describe, the change in our lives has been tremendous, frustrating and wonderful. The ‘wonderful’ is, in large part, due to the work of the Canadian Paraplegic Association (NS). Support comes in so many forms from their team, each person dedicated to serving clients who so desperately need it. Watching these injured clients achieve full community participation with the aid of CPA (NS) is a great thing to witness. The support I received as a family member was so valuable and continues to this day, as my husband and I work through the ongoing obstacles of living with a spinal cord injury. My wish for you is that you never need the services of CPA (NS); my hope is that you continue to support the important work that they do for those who need it – people like Kevin Penny who you met at the opening banquet. Thank you curlers, Travelers Canada and the Mayflower Curling for this fantastic event! But there’s one shipped each year that holds a special place in the province’s heart. For more than 40 years it’s been a Christmas tradition for Nova Scotia to ship one of its biggest and best Christmas trees to Boston, to thank the people of Boston for the emergency assistance they provided after the Halifax Explosion. In 1917, Halifax was the main base of the then new Canadian Navy. The port was a major hub of wartime activity and Halifax Harbour was crowded with warships, troop transports and supply ships. largest man made explosion prior to the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Relief from Boston was the first to arrive the day after the horrendous explosion which killed 1,900 people and wounded another 9,000. It levelled 1,600 buildings – including the Mayflower Curling Club. To this day Nova Scotia and Halifax continue to thank the city of Boston by providing their Christmas tree placed on the Boston Common each December. This year’s tree cutting event took place on November 17th. On the morning of December 6, 1917 two munitions ships collided in the harbour initially catching fire and then exploding, making it the Need insurance?
