A Message from Victor Salerno, CEO
I want to personally thank all of our customers, vendors, subcontractors
and especially our dedicated employees as we celebrate the completion of
our 104th year of service. This has been one of our most successful years
with sales exceeding $128,000,000.
We are all proud of our accomplishments and would like to highlight a few
of our successes which include, ENR New York naming O’Connell Electric
as the 2014 Specialty Contractor of The Year for all of New York, New
Jersey and Connecticut as well as the opening of an office in the Albany,
NY metro area with the purchase of Clifford R. Gray Electric’s assets in
Schenectady, NY. We welcome all of the employees of Clifford R. Gray to
the O’Connell Family. This acquisition will play an important role as we
move toward our goal of reaching annual sales of a quarter billion dollars.
The year also included our Technical Services Division receiving, for
the third time in a row, Contractor of The Year by the TEGG Service
Organization and also the successful installation on October 31, 2014
in Chicago, of the cable for Nik Wallenda over the Chicago River. The
event was televised live on the Discovery Channel. This was our third
installation for Mr. Wallenda.
The company is in a very strong financial position and on a very solid
footing which will allow us to continue to grow and increase our
employment opportunities.
As I close, I want to thank you all for your skill, dedication and hard work
and remind us all to continue to strive to make our safety program the
model of the electrical construction industry.

We’re not the only ones who
care about you working safe.
Every year, more than 80,000 workers suffer an
injury on construction job sites across the U.S. Any
one incident is one too many. Life is too precious
to not make safety our number one focus.

Four Foremen Receive Craftsmanship Awards
On March 28, 2015, The Rochester Builders Exchange
presented four electricians from O’Connell Electric
Company with Craftsmanship Awards for their
exemplary work performed on construction projects
in the Rochester, NY area.
The craftsmanship awards program was developed to
“recognize exceptional craftsmanship and the display
of interest and ingenuity by building trades mechanics
and workers in order to encourage the highest
form of workmanship, quality, skill and integrity.”
O’Connell Electric has long been a commercial
electrical contracting company that, since founding in
1911, has built its success by establishing a reputation
for integrity and craftsmanship. We’re proud of our
four award recipients: Brian Catalano, Gerry Freida,
Roy Schumacher and Tom Towne.
An awards committee of six judges reviewed
submissions for work completed throughout Western
New York over a five-year span from January, 2010
through 2015. The committee based selections
on tradesmen that not only completed successful
projects that are neat and accurate, but that clearly
went above and beyond by demonstrating interest,
ingenuity, imagination and a level of skill that
surpassed industry standards.
O’Connell Electric would not be the company it is
today if not for the dedicated, hardworking craftsmen
that represent who we are every day on our job sites.
Congratulations to our craftsmanship award
recipients. Keep up the great work.

Roy Schumacher, LU 86
8 years with O’Connell
RIT Institute for Sustainability
A certified LEED platinum facility, cutting
edge technology has been incorporated
into every inch of the 84,000 square foot
building. O’Connell was responsible for
nearly the entire electrical infrastructure
throughout the building’s construction.
GIS utilizes one of the first micro grids
installed in the area. The grid measures
power from multiple sources, both
utility and sustainable on-site power.
Renewable energy installations include
solar, wind turbines and a fuel cell. Other
installations consist of the high voltage
service, a fire alarm system, data system,
fuel cell lab, engine diagnostics lab,
a unique lighting system, occupancy
sensors and wiring throughout hundreds
of heat treated windows.
Two of the most important, yet most
difficult jobs that completed the Victor E.
Salerno Center for American Enterprise
building at St. John Fisher College
were the data center and adjacent
power room. Being located in the
basement posed significant obstacles
both Foremen had to overcome. Tom
Towne completed the communications
work for the data center while Gerry
Freida worked close by on the power
installation. Logistics getting equipment
into the available space and fitting all of
the utilities proved to be quite difficult.
With plenty of patience, collaboration,
and coordination with all of the trades
involved, both Foremen completed
successful projects to seamlessly
integrate the computing needs for the
college.
Brian Catalano, LU 86

Golisano Children’s Hospital
Part of Strong Memorial Hospital, the
145 million dollar building will provide
245,000 square feet of space to children
and their families. O’Connell performed
the installation of the electrical
infrastructure for the project, which
consisted of state-of-the-art lighting,
fire alarm system, a nurse call system,
general use power systems and three
1000kW generators.

Five Mile Station
Project Manager: Michael Parkes/Tim Ehmann
Site Supervisor/General Foreman: John Fox
Inside Foremen: Mark Brunner/Art Hazer
Line Foreman: Dwayne Palmer
Division: Power Group
O’Connell’s largest substation construction project to date,
Five Mile Station is in full swing in Allegany, NY. The Power
Group was involved with the design build of the station
and has been contracted to provide construction services
to complete the project.
Owned by National Grid, the new station will help support
the 115 kV system in the Southwest region of NY State by
supplying power to the Gardenville-Homer Hill Line and
the Arcade-Homer Hill Line. The station occupies nineteen
acres of land and will consist of a new 345kV/115kV
transmission station, two new 250 feet long 345kV
transmission loops and four new 650 foot long 115 kV loop
connections.
The project includes installation of a 4-breaker 345kV
ring bus that feeds three bays of 115kV breaker and a
half through a 400MVA power transformer. There will
also be a 4000 square foot control building to house
approximately 60 relay and control panels. The project
requires installation of over 300 drilled pier foundations
ranging in size from 30 inches to 9 feet in diameter. The
Technical Services Division will be responsible for testing
and commissioning the station.

Syracuse Lakeview
Amphitheater
Project Manager: Don Coon, Steve Briem
Foreman: Andy Schaffner
Division: Syracuse Construction
Site work is well underway on the Western shore of
Onondaga Lake, in Geddes, NY, for what will eventually
emerge as the Lakeview Amphitheater, a new
outdoor events center in Central NY.
The entertainment complex will have a main
amphitheater with capacity to seat 17,500
people both covered and in lawn seats
as well as a smaller theater with space
available for up to 300 guests. The site
will also have a general service building
for administration, security and other
support functions including food and
beverage storage and vendor locations.
The amphitheater project is the
beginning of a larger revitalization
initiative for Onondaga Lake, the
Village of Solvay and the town
of Geddes. The area will also
have recreational trails and an
observation pier among other
amenities.
The design of the amphitheater is
intended to evoke a memorable
experience for patrons with a look that
feels natural to the environment, yet
encompasses modern design elements
with state-of-the-art technology.
O’Connell is working under
subcontract to support the entire
electrical infrastructure for the
amphitheater including providing
design assist support to the Gilbane
Building Company.
Scope of work includes providing
site infrastructure consisting of
15kV systems, 600 volt systems to
out buildings, VIP and shore power
systems, fiber and copper cabling
systems for communications and site
lighting.
Electrical construction for the
amphitheater includes two large
restroom buildings and the box office.
The crew will install distribution and
feeders, general lighting, lighting
controls, theatrical lighting systems,
branch electric, security and access
control, life safety systems and
communication/data systems.
The amphitheater is purposely
nestled in a natural cove and is meant
to be “discovered” as one approaches
it upon the entrance path.

Aloft Hotel
Project Manager: David Curtis
Foreman: Rich Shopland
Division: Syracuse Construction
When it’s complete, the Aloft Hotel in Syracuse
will be the second one to open in New York State.
The 134 room hotel is owned by Starwood Hotels
and Resorts, a parent company that owns and
operates a handful of global hospitality brands such
as Sheraton, Westin, Four Points and The Luxury
Collection among others.
The Aloft Hotel, located at the Inner Harbor in
Syracuse, is the first new building among a $350
million development plan for the waterfront along
the former state Barge Canal. Hotel construction is
projected to cost $18 million under management of
COR Development.
O’Connell is operating as a subcontractor for COR
to provide the electrical infrastructure for the hotel.
When construction is complete, guests can expect
a trendier, more modern and aesthetic appeal from
this emerging segment in the hospitality industry. The
Aloft Hotel brand is designed around what the next
generation of travelers expect in their home away from
home – something bold, sleek and unique with an
urban look and bright social scene.

craftsmanship with unique electrical and special
lighting requirements. The crew is set to install cold
LED strip lighting that will wrap the outside of the
building and extensive modern lighting throughout
the interior. Every floor has a slab ceiling, which will
require conduit installation to be perfect and appear
hidden to the human eye.
On its website, Starwood describes Aloft as “a far cry
from its conventional, cookie-cutter competitors,”
by “infusing urban-inspired, tech-forward sensibility,
modern design and an energetic, social guest
experience.” Construction of the Aloft Hotel is a great
start to revitalizing the Inner Harbor in Syracuse.
Ginna Nuclear Power Plant
Project Manager: Tom Sweeney
Foreman: Scott Rohr
Division: Victor Construction
Ginna Nuclear Power Plant is located on 426 acres
on the south shore of Lake Ontario, about twenty
miles northeast of Rochester. The plant is capable
of generating more than 580 megawatts annually,
enough to power almost 500,000 homes.
O’Connell has completed various projects for
Ginna over the years, most recently the installation
of a backup water tank system to feed the fuel rod
spent fuel pool.
The project came about following a nuclear
meltdown disaster caused by the 9.0 magnitude
earthquake that devastated Fukushima and
surrounding regions of Japan in 2011.
The scope of work included the installation and
electrical connections for two one-megawatt
redundant generators, a transfer switch, switch
gear, a portable generator/load bank connection
point, lights, convenient power, pumps, security
devices, fire alarm devices, heat trace and controls
to the existing systems.
Randall Buick, GMC, Cadillac
Project Manager: Rich Maher
Foreman: Craig Schmidt
Division: Victor Construction
O’Connell completed the electrical infrastructure for the
all new Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealership on the corner
of 332 and Thomas Road in Canandaigua. Now open for
business, customers will get a fully immersive GM experience
with the ability to shop all brands - Buick, GMC, Cadillac and
Chevrolet on one lot.

Syracuse Northwest Family YMCA
Project Manager: Barry Costello
Foreman: Andy Schaffner
Division: Syracuse Construction
It has taken over fifteen years for
the Northwest Family YMCA in the
Greater Baldwinsville area of Syracuse
to gain approval for construction, and
the long sought after recreational
facility is now a reality. This Spring,
community members will have full
reign to enjoy swimming, sports, arts
and music activities, teen activities
and much more that the YMCA
organization offers.
A lot of planning goes into large
construction projects such as the
10
Northwest YMCA. Although
the community supported its
construction, plans had to be
approved, a site selected, board
reviews and on and on. Finally,
in 2012, thanks to a generous
landowner, the YMCA was able to
purchase nearly 12 acres of land
for just one dollar and in May, 2014
construction started.
YMCA key features include:
O’Connell installed the electrical
infrastructure for the $20 million,
100,000 square-foot facility.
• A bicycling studio
The Northwest YMCA is expected to
employ approximately 300 full and
part time people and provide services
to about 13,000 members.
• An aquatic center with a family pool
• A lap pool and a therapy pool
• A field house with three basketball
courts and multiple smaller courts
• An indoor track
• A teen center
• An arts/music center
• An athletic performance center
• An exercise room dedicated to
helping cancer survivors
• Areas for group exercise,
weightlifting and cardiovascular
exercise
DTE Energy New Compressor Building
Project Manager: Tom Sweeney
Foreman: Scott Rohr
Division: Natural Gas
O’Connell was subcontracted to provide the
electrical construction requirements for a second,
300 X 60 foot compressor building to house six
brand new Arial/Caterpillar 3516 compressors.
DTE Energy, a diversified energy company that manages energy
related business and services worldwide, operates a network
of natural gas transmission pipelines serving the Midwest and
Northeast regions of the country. Early 2014, the company
secured long-term natural gas gathering commitments with
several nationwide energy companies that required a significant
expansion of the company’s Bluestone Pipeline.
The Bluestone Pipeline is part of a gathering system that delivers
Marcellus Shale gas in Pennsylvania and New York to two other
massive gas pipelines in the region. The system is a 44 mile
underground pipeline that passes through Broome County in
New York and Susquehanna County in Pennsylvania. The new
deal meant that DTE Energy’s natural gas processing facility,
known as CDP-2, in Susquehanna County needed to double in
size to meet the increased demand in gas volume.

The electrical scope of work included the
installation and connection of an 800 Amp five
section Motor Control Center (MCC), the station
control panel, gas detectors, flame detectors,
temperature detectors, pressure transmitters,
control valves, cable tray, rigid metal conduit and
cable. The crew also installed explosion proof
LED high bay light fixtures, exit lights, emergency
lights, exterior lights, switches and receptacles.
Once in service, the expansion will increase the
capacity of the Bluestone Pipeline from 600,000
Dth/day to 975,000 Dth/day, a greater than 60%
increase in capacity since the gathering system
first came online in late 2012.

Expands
Technology
in the Field
In late 2012, the IT Department
went through a nice growth spurt
by adding two employees and
eventually transitioning an internship
into a full time position in 2013. The
team has made significant upgrades
and contributions to the company’s
technology and communications
systems. Field offices have been
upgraded, outdated laptops have
been turned in for new models and
tablets have become a common tool
for field crews and foremen. In early
2015, the company was brought up
to speed with new communications
technology by incorporating an
entirely new phone and instant
messaging system, Microsoft Lync.
Most recently, the IT Department
kicked off an initiative to further
improve productivity of field workers
by rolling out a fully operational,
mobile digital workstation complete
with WIFI, a 40 inch display monitor,
wide-format printer, and MS Lync
communication options.
From left: Ian Mayzak, Systems Specialist, Dustin Reybrouck, System Administrator, Dave Adams, IT Manager.
The solution was developed as
part of a key initiative for the IT
Department to continue identifying
opportunities to improve productivity
in the field through new technology.
By partnering with field workers,
project managers and members in
key areas of management, the team
identified three basic field working
environments.
Class A – The vehicle
Class B – A portable workstation
Class C – A secured trailer
IT explored options for each
classification and discovered the
Knaack DataVault, a secure, mobile
digital work station that
looked to be an excellent
solution for the class B work
environment. The team
purchased a DataVault
and proceeded to identify
what technology best
suited O’Connell’s needs
and how to outfit the unit
for maximum productivity.
After slight renovation,
a few upgrades and
testing was complete, the
DataVault was deployed
to an active project being
managed by Phil Yandow, Project
Manager out of the Victor Office.
After IT fined-tuned the unit and
completed upgrades, the DataVault
now provides a secure workstation
that supports a laptop, tablet and
IPhone connected to a 40 inch
display. A 4G wireless router allows
any of the company’s laptops, tablets
or smart phones to connect to the
internet. Having MS Lync connectivity
allows for improved communication
and collaboration options including
remote desktop sharing and voice
over internet (VoIP) phone calls.
Based on field reports and more
testing, the DataVault will become
a customizable field solution as the
demand for technology increases at
job sites.
