You don’t know me, yet we are in the same profession and share many of the same ideals. We are in the life-enhancing business of removing interference from people’s bodies—interference that hinders the body’s ability to heal itself. If you want to direct movies, study what Spielberg does. If you want to build a flourishing practice, study the chiropractors who have done so. Not long ago, I had the opportunity to do just that—to study some of the most successful chiropractors in the world and ask them what they had done to achieve record breaking numbers in terms of new patients and office visits. I interviewed chiropractors that were seeing from 300 to 800 visits a week, some of which were getting 20 to 40 new patients a week. The survey was done at a time of economic devastation, when many chiropractors were struggling to stay in business. Yet, the group of doctors I surveyed were flourishing in practice. What was their secret? I learned that these successful doctors where doing what many businesses had done in the past to achieve success during poor economic times. DIVERSITY IS THE KEY When the Great Depression hit in the 1930’s many businesses failed. What you may not know, however, is that other businesses began to flourish like never before—not only in spite of the Great Depression, but because of it. Many of the businesses that expanded during the Depression did so because they had diversified. When bad economic times hit, they didn’t keep doing “businesses as usual.” They ventured out into new, larger markets, delivering service and selling new products in markets they had not previously sold to. Procter and Gamble is an example. While stockholders insisted that they cut back advertising, P & G increased their advertising into markets they had previously not penetrated. Sales skyrocketed and today they are one of the most profitable companies in the world. What does all this have to do with you, the chiropractor? “The successful chiropractors with big numbers had achieved the bulk of their success by diversifying.” The successful chiropractors I interviewed had achieved the bulk of their success by diversifying. They expanded the services and products they offered into new, larger markets. In fact, they delved into the biggest health market in existence: the weight-loss market. ATTRACTING NEW PATIENTS IS LIKE ‘SHOOTING FISH IN A BARREL’ One of the doctors I interviewed even went so far as to say that attracting weight-loss new patients was like “shooting fish in a barrel.” The statement rings true because 70% of Americans are overweight. They’re everywhere! By interviewing these successful doctors, I learned that the “fat market” can offer the proverbial “holy grail,” in terms of practice expansion. And this lucrative market is only getting bigger. A health “report card” published by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Trust for America’s Health has predicted that half of all American adults will be obese by 2030. We’re not talking about people being just overweight, we’re talking OBESE. The report also predicts obesityrelated illness will raise national health care costs by $48 billion annually over the next two decades by adding another 7.9 million new cases of diabetes, 5 million cases of chronic heart disease and stroke, and 400,000 cancer cases – all courtesy of Americans’ everexpanding waistlines. Practice expansion aside, how can any health practitioner ignore these statistics? In my opinion, not treating overweight patients is doing people a great disservice. Back to practice expansion... A TRUE SUCCESS STORY TO EMULATE Not long ago, Dr. Alsahli’s practice (Houston, TX) was hit hard by the faltering economy and insurance cutbacks. With six children and another one on the way, he couldn’t afford to be an innocent victim. He noticed that seven out of ten people who passed by his practice each day were overweight and decided he was going to offer those people a solution for their weight problem.
