PUBLICITY
Tamera Mickelson and Michelle Jones have been hard at work placing ads in publications and getting postcards
and posters printed and placed.
In addition Laura Jessup has worked on printing and distributing Bead Bazaar announcement cards that she, and
many other members, have been spreading around.

Muse and Process, September 20th Speaker - Kristi Zevenberger
Kristi Zevenberger has been making jewelry and teaching
metalsmithing in the Puget Sound area for over 20 years.
Her jewelry has received local and national honors and she
has been published in Metalsmith, Art Jewelry Magazine,
and Lark Publications. Teaching credits are Pratt Fine
Arts Center, Edmonds Community College, Fusion Beads
and The Ranch. Her work is shown and sold locally at
Facere Jewelry Art Gallery and periodically through galleries around the country.

“Muse and Process”
Kristi will be speaking on how she navigated the creative process over the
last 20 years including visual presentation of early work, current work on
the bench, and much in between.
Bernice’s Necklace
History of Hand Sewing, October 18th Speaker - Carol Perrenoud
Carol Perrenoud is a bead artist, teacher and entrepreneur. Her work has been exhibited nationally and featured in many beadwork books since 1989. She has penned articles for Bead &
Button and Beadwork Magazines and has authored 4 instructional beadwork
videos with Victorian Video Productions: Beadweaving Peyote Stitch, Bead
Crochet, Bead Embroidery and Beadweaving Herringbone Stitch. She received
the Bead & Button Excellence in Bead Artistry Award along with Virginia
Blakelock in 2002.
Many of her pieces refer to the animals she studied while a zoology student in
college, but her interest in beads and fibers is lifelong. In describing her home
life at age five, she remembers that Grandma, who lived downstairs, had a towering column of See's candy boxes filled with beads sorted by color.
Needle Maker
Carol spends her days working in her mail order bead business, Beadcats, and her evenings recovering from
the day job and gardening - sometimes by headlamp. She is active in the Portland Bead Society and lives and
works in nearby Wilsonville, Oregon.
She can be contacted at [email protected] Mail Order website is www.beadcats.com
“History of Hand Sewing”
I often have to remind customers, students and myself that beads are just static, but tactile, pretty pieces of
glass. What I do with them is to make myself feel elegant or visibly put a smile on my face, or impress the
viewer that I could do that with beads – THAT is the art of beadwork.
―It’s a relationship‖. I hear or read that about artists in all mediums, but what does that mean? It does not
mean that I am always in love, wrapped-up in rapture about my work. Sometimes I do carry a few beads in
my pocket that are later at the bottom of the washing machine – a quick love affair, but then abandoned. Other
days, I can’t wait to continue working on a project. I rush home from work and heat up some soup for dinner.
The bead tray is on my lap, public television is on the TV for background and I’m at one with the universe.
Other days, I’m just the technician, going through the motions, getting the job done. There are late hours and
maniacal work. I lose sleeping thinking, ―Is this the best way to continue for the sake of the piece? What am I
going to do next?‖ There are disagreements, but I win because I have an opposable thumb and can operate the
scissors. ―Am I doing the right thing? Should I give it more space, or discipline?‖ Other days, I’d rather be
hauling manure for the garden than have to look at THOSE beads. But again, I’m in it for the long haul. It’s a
relationship.
Pearls to Dream About, November 15th Speaker - Richard Paille
Richard Paille has worked in the jewelry industry 42 years. Teaching himself the basics of fine jewelry making, Richard opened a jewelry workshop
in Seattle in 1971 where he did repair work for antique shops and walk-in
public, meanwhile studying the craft of fine jewelry making.
In 1972 he began studies at the Gemological Institute of America (G.I.A.)
to become a gemologist. During that period he was also continuing his academic education in economics. ―During the day I worked on jewelry then
hit the books at night.‖ Later, Richard opened a retail jewelry store in the
University District in Seattle which he operated for many years.
Richard Harvesting Pearls
Eventually, Richard sold the store to design jewelry for a national market. For 25 years he exhibited his work
at art & craft shows across the U.S.
In the mid-90’s, Richard, and a small crew, traveled to Australia to film a documentary on opal mining. On a
later trip to the South Pacific, they filmed another story on black pearl farming which led to Richard’s pearl
business in the Cook Islands and a change in his jewelry to 18K and platinum featuring pearls. See how black
pearls are made: My pearl making station.
In 2008 Richard converted his studio into a teaching space and opened the jewelry making school he operates
today. www.Learn2MakeJewelry.com
Richard produces tools for jewelry makers available through supply outlets around the country, offers jewelry
making and business consulting services, and speaks to groups on jewelry subjects. Contact Richard by email
or phone. [email protected] (206) 527-1515
“Pearls to Dream About”
Pearls have a rich history. They are the oldest known
gem and for centuries were the most valuable. Some
became famous for their size, shape or ownership
provenance. In the early 20th century when the techniques of pearl cultivation were discovered, pearls became available to the public worldwide and their beauty shared across cultures, incomes and ages. I’ll be
demonstrating how pearls are made using the specialized tools pearl farmers
employ and talking about my involvement in pearl farming. Also, I’ll be presenting a short multimedia piece
on Manihiki Atoll in the Cook Islands where I worked and learned how to make this ―ocean gem.‖
In Remembrance of Ella Summerfield
Ella passed away August 1, 2012. She was not only a long time member but one of the
original founders of the Northwest Bead Society (1983). Together with her husband, Albert,
Ella attended every meeting serving her special punch. Her lemon bar cookies were always a
hit. Lynne Magie remembers Ella tending the kitchen, preparing the coffee and quietly making sure everything went right while others were socializing and comparing beads. After Albert passed away, Ella continued to come to the meetings until she was too weak to leave the
house.
Laura Bowker said, “It has been a long time since Ella has been to our general meetings. She was truly interested in each and every member. She would take the time to talk to you and the next time she would see you and
remember what you were up to and would ask how things were going for you. Ella was a wonderful caring person
and the bead society has her and Albert to thank for our group’s existence.”
Ella loved “big” beads, and with Albert amassed an amazing collection of ancient to contemporary beads.
No matter what the topic of the talk was, they were able to pull wonderful examples from their collection. Nicki
Stessin admired their remarkable instincts and taste. They would advise her which beads to collect (i.e. pomtek
beads) and were always spot on. She remembers that Ella’s favorite necklace was a strand of white hearts and brass
button shanks originally from Russia. I remember lusting after a strand of 6-layered chevron she was wearing. She
said it took her 30 years to assemble, collecting a couple of beads a year.
Nora Smids, who joined the NWBS in the early 80’s, remembers when Albert and Ella invited her and her
friend over and showed them their collection. “… It opened a whole new world to me that is still a keen interest …”
“Along life’s path one meets many people that change and develop your interests, thus was Albert and Ella – people
that shared willingly and are not to be forgotten.”
Memorable Tidbits
Nicki: “It tickles me to see these amazing beads stored in egg cartons…”
Laura: “Ella when asked how the bead bazaar was going, remarked, “Shoppers are just a bunch of tire kickers today!” (Looking and not buying!)
Claudia Ebling: “Beads were more Albert’s passion, but Ella was always supportive. Ella has her own collections.”
Claudia would bring pastries (cream cheese Danish) on her visits and over coffee Ella would talk about one of her
many collections. “I became fascinated with these lids, 3” in diameter, porcelain, with English scenes. They were
early 20th century, for a man to house his hair grease.” These Ella displayed in her house, some in frames and some
simply on the western walls of her kitchen.
Larry Scott: “Ella always entertained visitors in the kitchen. The wide East window sill by the table were many of
the orchids she had persuaded to bloom again and few on death row hoping for reprieve. There was coffee and tea
and always cookies. Snickerdoodles whenever Kathleen and I came. Here we sat and talked over things. Mainly the
past, but the living too. With a knowing and somewhat wicked
eye, Ella could unmask the foibles of others. Best though, was
when the bright eyes and that always-the-lady smile, she
laughed at her own.”
Like Ella, we should share our collections. I hope we’ll all wear
a treasured bead piece in remembrance of Ella to the next meeting and share stories.

Letter from our President, Jo Tampas
Summer’s coming to an end and the sky seems endless. We had many more sunny days this year than last.
I’ll breathe the sun in deep and remember the pleasure of these days through the upcoming fall.
In August we had wonderful hot weather for the NWBS picnic. We were repeatedly saluted when the Blue
Angles flew over head. A few times the Blue Angels were close enough that we were able to read the
writing on the wings of the plane. We had a sumptuous feast with all the food that people brought to the
picnic. I want to extend a huge thank you to Cynthia and Dan for opening their hearts and home to us for
the picnic. And to Dan for all the landscaping he did to make a beautiful picnic spot in front under the
shade of their huge trees and the new back patio he built especially for us in time to descend upon them
for the day.
And, while we board members worked to recruit new board members to fill the spots that are coming open
in 2012, we did not get any firm commitments. I have really enjoyed working as part of the NWBS board to
support the membership. In 2013 we are looking for a new Treasurer and a new Vice-President or VicePresidential team. (Position descriptions are available at General Meetings and never hesitate to approach
any board member for their input.) Please consider joining the board for 2013.
Deanna Raabe has done a wonderful job for three and a half years. And, although she loves being Treasurer, it’s time for her to take a break. She uses Quicken and the books are in good order so stepping into her
shoes will be easier than might have been if she wasn’t so conscientious.
Luciana Simoncini is stepping down as Vice President along with Cynthia Toops, who has been Co-Vice President. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all of the General Meeting lectures that I’ve been to. The primary function of
the Vice President is to arrange for the monthly lectures at the general meetings. Between Cynthia and Luciana they have plenty of contacts in the various beadmaking and silversmithing guilds. The schedule will
be set through February so that the incoming Vice-President (or team) will not be scrambling before the
fact to set up January and February lectures.
We have instituted a couple of new initiatives to improve the benefits of being a member of the NWBS.
Laura Jessup and Julia Henry worked hard to make sure our membership database was up-to-date and accurate for these initiatives. Laura created and distributed new Northwest Bead Society membership cards.
She has also recruited four of our local bead supply stores to offer a one-time, 10% discount on a purchase
when presented with a current membership card. The four stores are Fusion Beads, The Bead Factory, Red
Door Beads and Garden of Beadin’. (See page 16 for details.)

Northwest Bead Society – Bead Retreat
October 26, 27 & 28, 2012
The Retreat Center at Camp Burton, Vashon Island, WA
Attendance is full for the retreat, with a very short wait list. We know how
plans can always change, thus if you were considering attending, we still encourage you to put a registration form in. We are returning to the Retreat
Center at Camp Burton on Vashon Island (www.campburton.com). This
charming facility is located on waterfront property in a peaceful, wooded setting on Vashon Island, only a short ferry ride from Seattle. We are planning
another fun, relaxing weekend this year for you to work on your beading projects, visit with friends, share what you are doing, watch a demo if you want,
and just have a great time - with everything taken care of for you. Our meeting space has great views of the water, and the facility has beach access.
The registration fee of $195 includes both your housing and meals. You will
be able to come on Friday afternoon, leave on Sunday afternoon, and know
that everything is taken care of in your registration: all meals (Friday dinner
through Sunday lunch), your lodging for Friday and Saturday night, and our space to meet. Sleeping accommodations will be 3 people per room. You may tell us who you wish to room with or let us
make the assignment. Linen service is provided and each room has its own bathroom, although
since we are at a camp and not a hotel, rooms are left unlocked.
We do want this to be a relaxing weekend for all, with plenty of time to bead, so we have planned:
—a limited number of mini-classes
—another challenge project
—the Bead Swap Game and
Secret Beading Buddy for
those who wish to participate.
If you have already signed up
and have not paid in full as
yet, please do so ASAP. If
you have questions or would
like to help with the preretreat preparations, please
