Without doubt the picturesque Black Forest is one of Germany’s
largest and best known regions. A magical land of wonderful
scenery with pine clad mountains and rolling hills, lush green
valleys, crystal clear lakes and enchanting waterfalls.
Quaint half-timbered buildings nestle in delightful historic towns
and villages, there are spectacular gorges carved by the River
Rhine, plus of course those magnificent cuckoo clocks and the
famous Black Forest Gateau. This scenic tour is based in the
delightful village of Schonach, the home of the world's biggest
cuckoo clock, set in one of the most beautiful mountain valleys of
the Black Forest

Tour Itinerary & Suggested Drives
DAY 1 Morning P&O Ferry crossing—Dover/Calais, where you’ll have the
choice of taking a Scenic or direct drive through France and Belgium to
Luxembourg for the first of two overnight stops—Mileage approx. 250.
DAY 2: Departing the hotel after breakfast, you will have the choice of
taking a Scenic or direct drive through France and Germany before arriving
in the Black Forest at the Schloss Hornberg Hotel, your base for the next 6
nights - Mileage approx. 197 miles
DAY 3: The Day at Leisure OR enjoy a spectacular drive through the
Black Forest High Road to the famous spa town of Baden
(Schwarzwaldhochstrasse). Anyone visiting the Black Forest by car must
drive the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse. At about 3,000 feet/900m, the
44-mile/70km stretch of the B 500 road runs along the ridges of this low
mountain range. Along the way, you can look up at the 4,900-ft/1,493m
Feldberg, the highest point in the Black Forest, and down into some
spectacular ravines.
DAY 4: The Day at Leisure OR enjoy a scenic drive along the German
Clock Road (Deutsche Uhrenstrasse) What could be more typical of the
region than the German Watch-and-Clock Makers Road (Deutsche
Uhrenstrasse) It links the Black Forest villages, museums and clock
manufacturers that continue the centuries-old tradition of making
timepieces, including, of course, the famous cuckoo clock! And it is so
pretty, too: forest and meadow, trout streams and shingle-roofed Black
Forest farmhouses.
DAY 5: The Day at Leisure OR enjoy a morning visit to the National
Automobile Museum in Mulhouse with 400 vehicles on show, the Schlumpf
Collection is certainly the most prestigious collection in the world and well
worth a visit. Then in the afternoon explore the Alsace Wine Road to the
picture-postcard town of Colmar before returning to the hotel late afternoon.
DAY 6: The day at Leisure OR enjoy a day in Stuttgart, home to the
amazing Mercedes and Porsche Museums. Please note: The centre of
Stuttgart is a Low Emission Zone, which means that only vehicles in certain
emission categories may drive in the urban area of Stuttgart - Mileage
approx. 156 miles (round trip)
DAY 7: Departing the Hotel and the Black forest after breakfast, today you
begin the homeward drive through France and into Belgium for an overnight
stop in the wonderful Ardennes town of Bouillon - Mileage approx. 254 miles
DAY 8: Departing after breakfast today sees you making your final journey
back to Calais and the UK. Again you will have the choice of taking a Scenic
or a more direct drive to rendezvous with your return P&O Ferry crossing
back to Dover. Mileage approx. - 227 miles
This castle hotel in Hornberg lies in the hills
above Gutachtal Valley in the Black Forest surrounded by its own gardens and offers spacious
rooms with free Wi-Fi. All rooms at the Hotel
Schloss Hornberg feature satellite TV and a minibar. Buffet breakfast is served each morning and
in the evening the restaurant offers regional and
international cuisine Guests are welcome to relax
in the hotel bar or on the terrace during the summer. Hornberg town centre is a 15-minute walk
from Schloss Hornberg. The famous spa town,
Freiburg im Breisgau, is 50 km away.
Places to Visit
Triberg in the Black Forest
Triberg is located directly on the Black Forest railway line and is famous for Germany's
highest waterfalls, which have an overall drop of 163 metres over 7 cascades. The
area around the entrance to the waterfalls is reminiscent of Disneyland; here and in the
town centre, a large number of shops offer the even larger number of tourists cuckoo
clocks, woodcarvings, souvenirs as well as Black Forest ham and kirsch. These are
high quality craft products for the most part, although there is no shortage of plastic
cuckoo clocks 'made in Taiwan'. The Black Forest Museum, which is well worth seeing,
can also be found directly by the lower entrance to the waterfalls.
Freiburg im Breisgau
The city of Freiburg im Breisgau sits austerely on the edge of the Black Forest. Home
to one of Germany’s oldest universities and a Gothic sandstone cathedral, it’s a hub
for academics and mediaeval history buffs. Chug German suds at a local brewery,
then hop a cable car up Schauinsland mountain, where astounding views and a solar
observatory await. Freiburg has a lot to offer-no matter whether you are interested in a
stroll in the historic old town to learn about the culture and history of the city, whether
you would like to spend some time in one of the many cafes and cosy pubs, or
whether you would like to indulge in Badisch cuisine and hospitality.
The Black Forest Railway
The Black Forest Railway connects Offenburg and Singen over a distance of 149 km.
The section between Hornberg, Triberg and St. Georgen is particularly interesting.
More than 120 years after its opening, the stretch is still regarded as a great feat of
engineering. It is now used both by the Deutsche Bahn for its regular services as well
as for special trips with nostalgia trains. The planning and construction of the Black
Forest Railway became the ideal for building a mountain railway and the model for the
Gotthard, Albula and Bernina railway in Switzerland and railways in Peru, the USA
and New Zealand, amongst others.
Schwarzwaldhochstrasse
This famous panoramic road running from Baden-Baden to Freudenstadt (the B500)
is a must for every visitor to the Black Forest. The Schwarzwaldhochstrasse covering
some 60 km is the oldest, best known and perhaps even the most beautiful scenic
route in the Black Forest. The route was inaugurated back in 1930 – and has lost
none of its charm since then. At elevations ranging from 600 to 1000 meters,
spectacular views across the Black Forest and the Rhine plain to the Vosges
Mountains await visitors.
