X PRESS Black Diamond February 2013 The Columbia Ski Club Inside this issue: Taos Recap Joel Foreman It was dark when I left home for CSC‘s first 2013 ski trip and dark twelve hours later when the 40 plus members on the transcontinental run arrived at the Snakedance Condos in Taos Village. As it was too late to check out the base and get oriented for the morning, we (the three men I‘d room with for the week) unpacked and started to get friendly. I knew Ray Collins from Telluride 2012 but was new to long time member Bill Schrodel and club newbie Mark Chidester. The 2br condo was not, as Ray noted, as upscale as the digs in Telluride but was clean, spacious, and comfortably appointed. I enjoyed having a communal kitchen and living room where we would spend many off-slope hours talking, grazing, watching TV, and recharging for the next day. For me, the time between arrival at a trip location and the first ski run is always a bit uncomfortable. It‘s about getting adjusted; lots of questions to be answered. How do you divvy up the storage space with your roomie? Where do you put your stuff so you can find it easily? What will the morning ski conditions be like? How do you manage your morning time to have breakfast, get your rental skis, do a couple of warm up runs, and then appear wherever you are supposed to appear on time? Much of this was addressed at a welcome meet with wine, beer, chips and crudites in the wood-paneled lobby. We learned that the Sunday morning temperature would be about minus 16 degrees. The snow base was 3 - 5 feet, without any recent sowfalls or expectation for any in the coming week. The ski rental office was close enough for Joe Flacco to put a football through its front door, and the main lifts were not much further. A valet would care for our equipment and the daily 2-hour morning group lessons (an incredible $99 for the entire week) would start at 9:45 a.m. at the Whistlestop Café near the top of Lift 1. Get on the lift at 9:00, do a couple of runs down the blue Porcupine trail, warm up at the Whistlestop, and adjust your boots while waiting for your instructor to show. To combat the extreme cold, I loaded on nearly every layer I had with me; an UnderArmour base, a merino half-zip, a Patagonia fleece, a down sweater, and an R4 jacket. I barely managed to get my shell zipped, but I was blessedly warm. The eyeball sorting process managed by the staff of yellow-jacketed Taos instructors on Sunday morning put me with a group of six skiers that included a financial analyst from a Knoxville ski club, a retired rocket scientist, assistant trip leader Tim Kempisty, and club member Bill Aleshire, whose orange fluorescent shellwear was a constant beacon Taos—cont’d on page 4 Next Meeting Sunday, February 10 Report on Start of Ski Season: Taos Recap Joel Foreman 1 President’s Corner 2 Executive Committee 2 Committee Chairs 2 Moose Tracks 3 Special Events 3 Cinema Sunday at the Charles 3 Generosity of CSC Members 5 John Hubbs Preferred Vendors 5 From Ski Trip Coordinator 6 Bill Schrodel Annual Meeting —Elections 6 Nominations & Important Dates 7 Rules for Absentee Ballots 7 2012—2013 Ski Trips 8 Activities 9 Trip Reservation Form 10 Membership Application / Renewal 11 DoubleTree Hotel Columbia 5 – 7 p.m. Columbia Ski Club www.columbiaskiclub.org Page 2 Black Diamond X Press P resident‘s C orner Executive Committee 2012—2013 President/Director John Wetterau 410-465-3081 President-Elect/Director Jim Ferrant Directors John Hubbs Jean McArdle Eliezer Richmond Denise Berger Joe Brenner Kat Rhee 443-280-1892 410-360-7854 410-578-0324 410-730-8476 443-838-8267 410-465-1926 Treasurer Alexa Fair 410-465-2966 Secretary Molly Hochman 410-721-4407 Committee Chairs Activities Bob McCune 410-637-5454 Community Service Sue Muller 301-498-8462 Data Base Deb McCune 310-637-5454 Hospitality Anne Trent 410-730-5927 Membership Judith Schlesinger 410-721-1984 Meetings & Programs Gary Prestianni 410-799-4253 More Than Ski Joyce Wronka 410-730-6841 Newsletter Mario Tinto 301-776-3487 Publicity / Marketing Kat Rhee 410- 465-1926 Hello everyone Before I mention anything else, I would like to remind everyone that our February meeting will be on a Sunday. That’s Sunday, February 10th from 5 to 7 pm at the Columbia Doubletree. Different day, different time, same place!!! February is also the meeting when candidates for three Director seats and PresidentElect will be announced. This is a very rewarding way to give back to the Club. If you’d like to find out what is involved in holding these positions, feel free to ask one of the current Board members, myself, or contact Lynne Wagner at the Election Committee’s alias at [email protected]. If you are interested in running, be sure to contact Lynne by the next meeting. Your last chance to put your name in nomination will be from the floor at the February meeting. Also, if you know that you will not be able to attend the annual March meeting, you may vote by absentee ballot. At the February meeting, the Elections Committee will have a table where you can submit a request for an absentee ballot. Just remember to bring a selfaddressed stamped envelope. There should be more information on this elsewhere in this newsletter. Additionally, you should have received information by mail or will be receiving it soon. Please look out for it. As I write this column, the Taos trip, the first trip of the season, has returned after a great week of skiing. Also, the Park City trip has headed out and the BRSC trip to Steamboat will be going out the first week of February. There was not much more than a handful of openings on our trips as of the January meeting, as our trips have sold exceedingly well this year. However, if a trip that you are interested in is sold out, please contact the trip leader to get on the wait list. As we have already seen this year, openings can occur at the last minute. Among the Club’s activities this month is the Club’s regularly scheduled Happy Hour on February 8th at Frisco’s in Columbia, followed by a hike in Patapsco Park on the 9th. Later in the month, we have two very popular annual events. On February 23 rd, is Ted and Jeannie’s Dessert Night, and on the 24th is the annual Chili Cook-Off. There will be Cinema Sundays on February 3rd, 10th, and 17th. Check out the Club’s calendar on the web site for more detailed information on all these activities and for any impromptu activities through mts e-mail. If you don’t see something that interests you, volunteer to lead your own activity. Contact Bob and Sherry at [email protected] to find out what’s involved in creating an activity for the Club. Also remember, that the May general meeting will be an informal one and will take place at Union Jacks on May 13th. ONE MORE REMINDER: The February general membership meeting will be held on SUNDAY, the 10th of February, from 5pm to 7pm. The new membership directory will be available to members at the meeting. Please remember to mark the date and time on your calendar. See you there!!! Columbia Ski Club www.columbiaskiclub.org February 2013 Page 3 Moose Tracks .Champagne Powder comes to Maryland! I finally got some measurable snow down my way, 7/8 inch to be exact. Not quite an inch but I will count it as measurable. Temperatures in the teens made it a nice fluffy snow, not good for snowmen but great for skiing. Does this mean Old Man Winter is finally here? And why do we call winter an old man? According to Wikipedia Old Man Winter is a personification of winter and is sometimes called Father Winter. It has also been identified with Worden, an Old English god. But why would we call winter, the most wonderful season of all, an old man? Mother Nature brings the snow that really makes winter what it is, so what part does Old Man Winter play? And then there was Princess Summer-FallWinter-Spring from the Howdy Doody show of the 1950‘s. That covered all the seasons in one person! There was Old Man River and Old Man Creek that crosses under route 648 in Pasadena. So we have an old man personified as a creek, river, and a season. Not so bad being an old man is it? Regardless, if winter really is like an old man, I hope he will be a kindly old man and bring good fortune and lots of snow to our skiers this season. And what about the moose? We have our ice cream—Moose Tracks! The luckiest CSC member turned out to be Joe Hresko, whose snow board group consisted of himself and an instructor for the whole week. Not bad for $99. I have been told that the Taos ski instruction program is the most advanced in the country. This may be. I don‘t have the expertise to challenge this claim, although I noticed that Snowmass (where I am going in March with the BSC) says their school is the best. The first day I was skeptical about how much I would learn because we didn‘t seem to be doing more than cruising. Of course, we were just being introduced to each other and the mountain as our guru observed us and assessed our skills. The sky was overcast, it was cold enough to damage toes and finger tips, and my balaclava inhibited my breathing and misted my goggles. All in all, it was one of those wearying days when the costs of skiing outweigh the joy of well-negotiated rapid downhill descents. The experience improved day by day as the efforts of Peter (instructor and off-season landscape architect) gradually took hold. You had to be inspired just by his seemingly effortless ability to lay smoothly rounded tracks in the snow. He pushed and prodded us, led us through various exercises, supervised timed runs on the race course, and suddenly on day three I found myself producing a satisfying number of silken turns. By then the sun was out, and the temperature was up, I was taking on a black here and there, and humming ―Rocky Mountain High.‖ The no-wait ski lifts and under-populated slopes kept me happy through the week as did the quick access to the condo for lunch and renewal and much else. As CSC members are generally smart, well informed, and accomplished people, there were many opportunities for conversations about skiing (of course), as well as politics, religion, food and wine, finance, and the major breaking news of the week—Lance Armstrong‘s interview with Oprah. Some of us (I remember John, Bill, Roger in his fedora, Gail, Marc, Ray, Sabina, and Mikie) put on our dancing shoes one night and balled it up to the music of a jazzy rock band at the St. Bernard. I cannot now remember exactly where we supped on which nights but I do have a vivid recollection of the meals we enjoyed. Food is clearly the second best thing in life and may even be more important than skiing. I remember steak tacos at the Lazy Dog, mountain trout with icy vodka Martinis at Doc Martin’s in Taos, mixed sausage with garlic potatoes and sauerkraut (best meal of the week) at the rustic Bavarian, and elk and roasted beets at the Blonde Bear. The two CSC dinners organized by trip leader extraordinaire Terry McClung included a progressive meal that was, for me, mostly about gorging on the Bill Schrodel prepared fish sauce chicken wings. The best venue, without a doubt, was the two story, wood beamed and L shaped room at the home of Snakedance property manager Roger Marianni, which easily accommodated 40 plus people enjoying margaritas, a good Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir, a melted Brie and pesto combo (among other appetizers), and brisket and/or tilapia for the entrée. I think it fair to say that we all lived up to the well-deserved American reputation for pleasant excess and indulgence. Came the end of the week, I decided to do a sixth day of skiing and finished the afternoon having my muscles pummeled into relaxed submission by the in-house masseuse. It was time to start bidding farewell and to experience the one disappointment of the week; that I had not met everyone in the group. So maybe next time, guys, and for those I have already mentioned above and the others that I did meet—Fran, Laura, Eliezer, Jasmin, Linda, the two Tom‗s, Peggy and Mario, Sabine and Johan, Alexa, Ed and Kim—thanks for the memories. Joel 4man The Taos contingent, leading off the 2013 Ski Season Columbia Ski Club www.columbiaskiclub.org February 2013 Page 5 CSC Members are a Generous Group At the December monthly meeting, your club members contributed $250 to the Operation Welcome Home, Maryland (OWHMd) group. On Dec. 30th, Joanie Reisfeld presented a check for that amount during the announcements at BWI preceding arrival of the troops. Contributions were made by individual members, not from club funds, after the BoD approved the collection. The ceremonies are simple, but very moving with over 100 participants. An OWHMd team arrives early to cover the walls with posters, flags and bunting. Many organizations (scout troops and clubs like ours) as well as families and interested citizens get acquainted behind a simple partition awaiting the announcement that the military flight has landed. The actual arrival time is not precisely known ahead of time for security reasons. As the troops and military families (with a few pets) disembark and make their way through customs, the OWHMd team makes a few announcements and leads the Pledge of Allegiance. On this occasion, Miss Historic Maryland gave a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. As our honored veterans clear the double doors, everyone starts to applaud and shout ―Thank you‖, ―Welcome home‖, and ―We appreciate your service!‖ Handshakes, high fives, and fist bumps abound before volunteers hand out goody bags that your generosity helped to fill. Despite years of these ceremonies at arrival airports around the country, the honorees are clearly touched by the welcome; some appear embarrassed by the well-deserved attention. Joanie Reisfeld, right, presents a $250 check from CSC members to Anne Churchill of OWHmd. Some of the war and travel-weary troops arriving at BWI December 30, 2012. If you have never participated in one of these ceremonies at the BWI-Thurgood Marshal international terminal, I would encourage you to do so. There will be fewer events in the future as our proud nation finally winds down two long conflicts. Click this link for monthly schedule. A terrific trip at Taos with the $99 Ski Week Lessons, visit to Roger‘s house for dinner, and many great activities. The Park City trip is under way with good reports of snow, and of course, the chance to ski with Max. The other trips are cued up and will be heading out shortly. If you still want to get on any of these trips now is a great time to call the trip leaders as we get many last minute cancellations which open up a chance to jump on a trip at the last minute. If you have ever needed to get off a trip, you know how important it is to have people at the club fill your spot. I really want to stress trip insurance, which is something we need to promote to protect your trip investment. Here are two thoughts I want to cover in this write up. When was the last time you took a lesson? If you are skiing on new shaped skis, the techniques have changed drastically. We have the ability to let the ski‘s shape and design do the work. Are you skiing with a ―quiet upper body and letting the skis move out from a stacked body position?‖ This was the main topic of the lessons in Taos last week. Get more out of your ski season and enhance your skiing experience—take a lesson. We can all learn something new with a ski lesson. Now that you are home, how do you take care of your gear? You spent how much on the GORTEX or other waterproof fabric jacket and other outerwear? It needs to be kept clean and retain the waterproof qualities. Don‘t even think about throwing it in with the rest of your laundry. Check out the label of the garment and consider products like ―Tech Wash‖ and ―TX Direct Wash-In‖ from NIKWAX. These products will clean you expensive ski gear and protect and enhance the ability of this gear to keep you warm and dry. I hope everyone has a great ski season and enjoys the trips we are offering to you for 2013. Of course, the planning for ski trips is a year-round process and we already have initial plans for 2014. Soon we will have information coming out for the BRSC Western Carnival at Vail, which will be held the first week of February 2014. This is going to be our premier trip next year with literal front door ski lift access from the Vail Cascade Resort and Spa! Look to see early sign ups for this trip coming out shortly. This trip is going to be TERRIFIC! Bill Schrodel Ski Trip Coordinator Monday, March 11, 2013 is the CSC Annual Meeting At the annual meeting on we will hold elections for Board of Director positions and for the position of President-Elect. The Directors each serve a two (2) year term on the Board. The President-Elect (also a Director) serves one year on the Board and then serves a second year as the CSC President. General Meetings. The President may also set goals for the club during his or her term in office.
