A beautiful annual, native to drier parts
of Mexico, which we use in the dry
garden around newly planted shrubs
which will take a few years to fill their
allotted space. Young plants look like
silver leaved thistles but they soon
mature and produce a long spring,
summer and autumn display of large
white poppies. We just sprinkle the
seed into the garden where we want
the poppies to grow.

This annual fills empty spots in the
garden near our packing shed. 200cm
tall stems clothed in large handsome
leaves carry, from mid-summer
onwards, large clusters of pure white
narrowly tubular flowers, flared at the
end. Occasionally at dusk a species of
hawk moth, hovering like a humming
bird, extends a long proboscis and
inserts it into the flower. As the flower
tube is about 6 cm long the moth’s
proboscis would be close to that in
length. The same moths also can be
seen in their hundreds feeding on the
Agapanthus that lines the driveway
here at Lambley.

Winter DVD Now Available
Over three years Adele Film Productions have worked with me to make a
series of DVDs about dry climate gardening. All the shooting has been
done here in our garden. I think the DVDs have some of the best garden
film work I’ve ever seen. Filming took place almost every fortnight over a
period of two years.
There is now a DVD for each season, four altogether, Spring, Summer,
Autumn and Winter. Each DVD is about one and a half hours long and we
have had the most wonderful feedback about their quality.
The complete set of DVDs are finished and available from the nursery at
$29.95 each or $119.80 the set including postage.

Will Robertson is the director and cinematographer of this series of
DVDs. Will is second to none when it comes to filming gardens. I know of
no other garden filming which comes anywhere near the beauty of Will’s
work. It has taken more than three years to produce the DVDs.
