Safe Money in Tough Times, With Jonathan Pond Report From
f e b r u a ry 2009 the VPT Members’ Magazine Analog broadcasting ends Feb. 17. Time’s up! See more on page 2. Important news about Journal. See page 2. Safe Money in Tough Times, With Jonathan Pond Tuesday, Feb. 3, 7:30 p.m. Report From Montpelier Thursday, Feb. 5, 8 p.m. Assassination of Lincoln: American Experience Monday, Feb. 9, 9 p.m. Report From Washington Sen. Patrick Leahy Photo: Ron Clark Emerging Science – Season II With its premiere on Jan. 27th, our series on Vermont-based science and technology, hosted by Amy Seidl (pictured), is back. New episodes this month air every Tuesday at 9 p.m., and give us some hands-on knowledge about some high-tech projects going on right under our noses. Tune in! Tuesdays, 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 8 p.m. Great Performances “The Police Farewell Tour” Saturday, Feb. 28, 9:30 p.m. f e b r u a ry — Ann Curran, Community Relations Director COUNTDOWN TO FEB. 17 As this edition of Journal arrives, there are just weeks before U.S. TV stations must end analog broadcasting. When VPT and other local TV stations conducted a Test Your TV call-in event in December, we found many over-the-air viewers still unprepared for the end of analog broadcasting on Feb. 17. We also had calls from anxious cable and satellite viewers whose providers had not yet picked up stations’ digital feeds, but those viewers should be all set by now. A number of callers had connected converter boxes and were not getting all their digital channels. As people hook up boxes and adjust antennas, some are delighted to find they receive channels they never had before. Sadly, some viewers cannot receive all local digital channels, even after doing everything right. The hardest part of this transition is that some viewers who had free TV over the air for decades will be without it. If you’re having trouble, contact us for advice, and we’ll do our best to keep you with us in the digitalonly future. Viewers in Canada who use older TV sets and antennas will find that digital converter boxes are scarce in Canada, because analog broadcasting continues on Canadian stations until 2011, but we have found some sources. If you need information and advice about anything digital, please visit www.vpt.org or call us weekdays at 1-800-639-7811. We plan to have plenty of phones staffed after Feb. 17 to help anyone caught by surprise. FIND HIGH DEFINITION ON VPT’S MAIN CHANNEL By the time you read this, VPT’s “.1” position over-the-air digital channel is expected to be carrying our HD programming, along with our familiar Britcoms and local programs. VPT HD as a separate channel ends. If you have a HDTV, you’ll see the shows in HD. If you’re watching a digital signal converted to analog, you’ll still see the program but not in true HD. The cable channels where you find our HD programming will reflect the change. Keep an eye out for the following lineup, depending on which | 2 Vermont Public Television Journal, February 2009 volume 42, number 2 VPT over-the-air channel you watch: VPT on 33.1, 20.1, 28.1, 41.1 (regular schedule, including HD) VPT on 33.2, 20.2, 28.2, 41.2 (same schedule as “.1” for a limited time) VPT Create on 33.3, 20.3, 28.3, 41.3 (Travel, cooking, home) VPT World on 33.4, 20.4, 28.4, 41.4 (News, documentary) EVERYDAY ECONOMIES VPT continues our efforts begun last fall to help people cope with the daily challenges of the sour economy. Our Public Square program and VPT & You spots, on air and on vpt.org, share information with those who need it most. We’ve looked at livable wages, and the costs of food, home heating and housing over the past few months. Those programs and links to resources are archived on www.vpt.org. Thanks to our community partners for their help with this. December’s focus was on how moneywise seniors can weather these tough times. Central Vermont seniors offered tips that included: make small meals so you don’t waste food; visit food shelves and senior centers for good meals; and check farmers’ markets for special senior deals. Journal Changes We wanted to give you a ‘heads up’ about a major change coming soon – an unhappy result of very tough economic times. Next month’s (March) issue of Journal will be the last issue we automatically print and mail to members. Beginning with the April issue, our online version, eJournal, will be the only version immediately accessible to all members. If you haven’t yet signed up for eJournal, we urge you to do so now by going to vpt.org and clicking on the “Sign up for eJournal” button. Of course, we know that not every member uses the Internet, so we will mail you a photocopied version, if you request it. Just call customer service at 1-800-6397811. We also know that not everyone will welcome this change, but keep in mind that it is a greener choice, and VPT’s current financial situation really leaves us no alternative. We hope our loyal members will understand – and we urge you to sign up for eJournal now. We’ll follow up with more information in the March issue. 2009 Vermont Public Television Toll Free: 1-800-639-7811 Local: 802-655-4800 Email: [email protected] Web: www.vpt.org President & CEO John King VP, Marketing & Development Lee Ann Lee VP, Finance & Administration and CFO Andrea Bergeron Programming Manager Kelly Luoma journal Staff Publisher Jeff Vande Griek Editorial Staff Laura Walsh/Judy Gordon Design & Production Stride Creative Group Vermont Public Television Board of Directors James A. Vermont ETV Inc. is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer. Back to the Lab Where’s the Money? Lots of New As noted on the cover, this month sees the continuing new season of VPT’s own Emerging Science, as we explore some of the innovative and intriguing work being carried on in Vermont’s scientific community. During February, we’ll look at Vermont food webs – both wet and dry; how social scientists are using the Internet to get to know us; changing modes of transportation; and a broad look at U.S. fresh water reserves and where they’re headed. Yes, Vermont scientists are involved with all that and more, and host Amy Seidl is eager to introduce us to them. We hope you’ll tune in, Tuesdays at 9 p.m. The program is produced by Vic Guadagno and funded by Vermont EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research), located at the University of Vermont. Vermont EPSCoR supports Vermont scientists and business leaders through funding, outreach and technology development. Another local offering we’re quite happy about this month is the return of financial expert Jonathan Pond in an exclusive production from the VPT studio. On Feb. 3, Pond takes questions from a live studio audience and offers advice about protecting your financial security during these very troubled economic times – advice we could all use. For Financial expert your own peace Jonathan Pond joins of mind, join us us Feb. 3rd for a very Feb. 3 from 7:30 helpful special. to 9 p.m. Also in the local tap this month are new installments of Report From Montpelier, Report From Washington and Public Square, Thursdays at 8 p.m. Hope you can join us. Along with all that, look for some bright new episodes from some of your favorite series. On the 15th, Masterpiece Classic kicks off a Dickens extravaganza with a Late funnyman George new, two-part proCarlin is honored in a duction of “Oliver hilarious tribute, Feb. 8 and 18. Twist.” It’ll be followed by “Little Dorritt,” “The Old Curiosity Shop” and “David Copperfield.” Yum. You’ll also note that Nature, Nova and American Experience are all studded with exceptional new episodes, designed to help us avoid February’s chill. Two other programs of note: airing Feb. 8 and 18, the late George Carlin is honored with the Mark Twain Prize in a touching, and very funny, tribute; and on the 25th it’s the new installment of America’s Ballroom Challenge, this year condensed into a two-hour special. Enjoy! At the end of the day on Feb. 17 – midnight – U.S. television stations, including VPT, will cease broadcasting an analog signal. As of that moment, all U.S. television broadcasts will be digital-only. If you’ve heeded our warnings over the past year and have purchased a digital television or converter box, or if you receive your signal via cable or satellite dish, you should be all set. If you have not yet taken those steps - and still receive your signal over the air on an older, analog TV set – you’ll no longer receive television signals after Feb. 17. We hope that’s not you. There’s more information on page 2, and on our website at vpt.org. I want you to know that VPT is committed to bringing all our viewers with us into the digital age. If you experience problems with your signal after Feb. 17, or if John King President & CEO you need help understanding the transition, or need questions answered – you can call us weekdays at 1-800-639-7811. We’re here to help, and we’ll do everything we can to make sure you continue receiving the public television programs you rely on. And welcome to the bright new world of digital television! | Vermont Public Television Journal, February 2009 3 vp t world & c reate prime t ime schedule Find full schedules for all VPT’s digital channels at www.vpt.org. Saturday, Feb. 28, 8 p.m. | Vermont Public Television Journal, February 2009 15 How we’re doing … We’re proud that thousands of people are turning to our trusted public affairs programs every day to stay informed about events shaping our world. From inspiring people to amazing discoveries to marvelously crafted stories … VPT helps maintain a sense of wonder about the world around us. There are so many reasons to support VPT – curiosity, inspiration, civility, community spirit ... For these reasons and more, VPT is an essential part of our community, now more than ever. While December saw a tremendous amount of support from you, we fell a bit short of our financial goal, while also receiving two additional financial blows: a second state rescission, bringing the total to $81,000, and a $67,000 reduction in federal funding. To help address these setbacks, we’ve put in place several measures to reduce expenses – yet we still have a shortfall of over $200,000. A special gift from you – of $150, $100, $50, $40 or any amount you choose – would make a real difference. We can do it … but only with your help. To donate, please visit vpt.org, call 1-800-639-7811 or mail your check to 204 Ethan Allen Ave., Colchester, VT 05446.
