These monumental cliffs exceed 100 meters above sea level. The highest chalk cliffs in Europe are on the littoral of Criel-sur-Mer ( 106 meters ) as highlighted in the report of Natura 2000. Here, the cliffs are shaped by the weather conditions. The assault of wind and rain, causing erosion, make the cliffs recede at an annual average rate of 20 cm and produces the pebbles which you find on the beaches. Our littoral flora The flora had to adapt to the natural conditions of our littoral : chalky ground, wind and important salinity. Mesnil-Val is one of the last sea resort where you can find the “Curly Leaf Sea Kale“ or “Crambe Maritima”. This plant offers a large powder-blue foliage covered with creamy pink flowers blooming in June. Its strong root system extends through pebbles to reach the chalk where it takes vital elements. Now, the Sea Kale has become rare due to the overexploitation of pebbles on our beaches. Picking them up is forbidden. 4 Our littoral fauna The river Yères flows into the sea at the beach of Criel-sur-Mer. This meeting with the river and with the sea, attracts both fresh and salt water birds and offers opportunities to observe many different species such as the Kingfisher, the Mallard and the Silver Gull ( the easiest and most observable bird of our littoral ). Le Mont Joli Bois overhangs the sea 106 meters above sea level, in the heart of a wooded area where rabbits, squirrels and small game birds can easily be seen. To preserve this natural heritage, only pick up the shellfish to adult size and for personal consumption. Fishing Fishing with net is one of the most popular attractions for tourists spending their holidays in Criel-sur-Mer or in Mesnil-Val. At low tide, even beginners will gather winkles, velvet swimming crabs, mussels and prawns. 5 THE BEACHES OF MESNIL-VAL & CRIEL-SUR-MER Sea bathing During la Belle Epoque, from the term of the century to the Second World War, the beaches of Criel and Mesnil-Val were important resort sites of the Norman littoral. An architecture known as “ balnéaire “ extended on the edges of those two beaches. Magnificent villas bear witness to this past. In Mesnil-Val for example, you’ll discover the superb houses of the architect Léon Mériot ( at the front of these houses, enameled plaques mention his name ). There was even a small casino in Mesnil-Val, at the place of the existing “ Resto de la Plage “ ; this site was built in a cliff cavity and was so picturesque that tourists came in great numbers.
