The merging of the two associations was discussed at the annual Open meeting of the CNM USBC Association in July. The annual awards banquet celebrating the 2007-08 season achievements of association bowlers was held on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008, at the Radisson Hotel in Albuquerque. At the banquet, winners of the various association tournaments were presented, and special honors were announced. During the event, recognition was given to youth bowlers Casey Fitzgerald and Wendy Shelton for High Average, Christina Waldron for High Game, and Casey Fitzgerald and Christina Waldron for High Series. Adult bowlers Mike Eggleston Jr. and Dana Miller-Mackie were recognized for High Average, and Craig Jensen and Mary Johnson for High Series in the association. Special recognitions were given to Nicole Banks for a 300 game at the USBC Open Championships, Mary Johnson for a Local Association and State Association Record Women’s Series, and Melanie Fuqua and Joey MacPhee for their CNM USBC Open Championship Tournament National Record. From Sandia Park, NM In The Pocket Mark Sullivan is 1st Place Singles Open Winner in "The BTM" 2008 tournament Mark Sullivan of Indianapolis, a former PBA Tour bowler and Columbia 300 staff member, won 3 divisions this year as he was crowned winner of the Open Singles Division with a 982 four-game block, along with 8 Game Singles (1843) and Alibi Singles with his three-game total of 762. Jason Guest finished 2nd in Open Singles but the Waukee resident teamed up with West Des Moine's Jason Poli to take first place in Open Doubles. The Iowa duo shot 1777 to win by one pin over Steve Hartman, of Lafayette, Indiana and Aaron McCormick of Brookston, Indiana. Vince Mazzanti Jr. of Levittown, Pennsylvania, bowling on the last weekend of the tournament, made a run at Senior Singles but came up short when he shot 886 to finish third behind Steve Hartman and Lonnie Sharkey of Bremerton, Washington, who tied for 1st place with 902 blocks. No lefty-righty controversy here, since Hartman is right-handed and Sharkey is a very talented lefty. The Senior Doubles Division grew by 40 percent this year, and once again Henderson, Nevada's Terry Leong won a championship as he teamed with his longtime friend Sam Carter of Ben Lomond, California to capture first place with 1732. Gordon Kilpatrick won the 8 Game total for Seniors and Vinnie Atria of Louisville, Kentucky captured the Super Senior (60 and over) class with a very impressive 882 block. Pete Thomas takes $10,000 Clean Block Pot Oklahoma City bowler Pete Thomas shot 906 and finished 6th in the Open Singles Division of The BTM tournament, but his clean four-game block was worth $10 ,000. The smooth righty, known for his spare shooting, was the only bowler able to conquer the flat oil sport condition at this year's event. The BTM, presented by Bowling This Month and sponsored by Hammer, continues to be the fastest growing side tournament held in conjunction with the USBC Open tournament. Albuquerque in 2008 marked the introduction of a Handicap Division for The BTM, and it proved very popular with the aspiring bowler, along with scratch bowlers taking advantage of the opportunity to participate. Ken Abner used his 937 scratch score to win this new division, along with Mixed Doubles, teaming with is wife, Caroline Abner. Thanks to ball sponsor Hammer,The BTM's official lane maintenance sponsor Kegel, and Host Hotel Best Western Barcelona, Albuquerque, for helping make this 6th year for The BTM tournament possible. The technical support from Kegel helped assure that the lane condition was fair and remained consistent throughout the duration of the event. The 2009 The BTM event in Las Vegas will be hosted by Silver Nugget bowling center, which is conveniently located just over a mile from the site of the USBC Championships. You started the season right by carefully adjusting the surface of your ball to match your style and certain lane oil patterns. You are delivering the ball well and hitting your targets consistently, but your balls are not reacting like they were the first half of the season. The smooth, highly polished surface ball is not skidding as far down the lane as before and hooking more, and your dull ball is hooking less and skidding farther down the lane. The oil pattern has not changed, the weather and your delivery are basically the same, so what has happened? By now you have bowled many games, approximately 62. Including practice, this will have an effect on the ball surface, especially in the track area. Instead of making lane adjustments, it may be time to make ball surface adjustments. The track develops nicks and scratches and gets rough because of friction. This will cause your polished ball not to skid down the lane as far as before and hook more. Also, the dull ball probably has absorbed a lot of oil and picked up dirt from the lane. The dull ball will now skid farther down the lane and hook later and less than it did before. Ball surface adjustment is the move in this case. A good cleaning, resurfacing and oil extraction can get your bowling balls reacting like they did the first half of the season. Because of the difference in ball composition, there is no rule stating how many games should be bowled before performing this type of maintenance, so watch your ball reaction. Check with your pro shop operator for the appropriate maintenance for your ball as recommended by its manufacturer. The newest center in the Central New Mexico USBC Bowling Association is located at 11000 Broadway S.E., Albuquerque, adjacent to the Isleta Casino and Resort. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Manager Keith Parker lists among the center’s features a full service snack bar, arcade, billiards, laser tag, 24 Brunswick lanes, and 12 giant video screens for music videos or television. The unique layout of Isleta Fun Connection is one of its key features. Mr. Parker pointed out that it is the only bowling center with staggered lanes that are turned to the left and turned to the right. The center offers an abundance of leagues, including seniors, adult mixed, family leagues, female-only, youth, and bumpers. The unique layout and casual seating at Isleta Fun Connection provide patrons with a modern bowling experience enhanced by the 24 Brunswick lanes and 12 giant video screens throughout the center. In addition to leagues, Isleta Fun Connection has hosted tournaments including the CNM USBC 2008 Dick Tanner Memorial Invitational, and a scratch singles event that ran during the USBC Open Championships held in Albuquerque from February to July. Mr. Parker indicated that there are also plans for a masters scratch tournament. In an effort to support the national directive to grow the sport of bowling, Mr. Parker said that organized league play for adults and youth will encourage others around the area to understand the sport of bowling. Mr. Parker would like to see the future of bowling in Central New Mexico include broader abilities to do fund-raising events for many of the area’s special needs groups.
