2011-12 Anniversary Annual Report
Carden Arbor View School Celebrating 30 Years of Academic Excellence Annual Report 2011-2012 A Message from the Head of School 30 Years of History, Vision, Dedication, and Excellence in Education Reaching our 30th year is certainly cause for celebration; it also prompts us to reflect upon our history, acknowledge our benefactors, and appreciate our founders. Mrs. Humphries and her husband Bert not only shared a desire to open an elementary school, but their determination to establish a school that would instill self-discipline, build character, self-reliance, and confidence in addition to providing a strong academic foundation for students led them to select Carden as the primary instructional methodology and curriculum for the school. Mae Carden was a visionary, a forward thinking educator, whose work provided us with the foundation for an education that addresses the “whole” child. The success and reputation we enjoy today is due to our dedicated teachers and staff, who masterfully blend her pedagogy with the innovative use of 21st Century technology thereby providing the educational experience we have come to value. The diverse backgrounds and varied outlooks of our teachers are united by a common strand; they are committed to the mission and vision of the school: to educate with joy, growth, enthusiasm, dignity and respect. Woven through our history connecting generations of students and their families is a strand of supportive parents, trustees, faculty, staff, and friends whose dedication to Carden Arbor View School has enabled us to thrive fiscally. On the heels of the most tumultuous economic situation in recent times our enrollment and fundraising achievements are both climbing as twenty-two new families joined our school in September of 2011. This year’s annual report is a testament to thirty years of tradition and dedication, to the confidence our families have in the education their children receive, to the dedication of a committed governing board, and to the devotion of our faculty and staff. We thank you for your continued support as we look forward to another promising thirty years. Mrs. Edwards, Head of School 2 A Message from the Board of Trustees President To our Carden Arbor View School community and friends: I would like to thank all of you for assisting in making the commemoration of our 30th anniversary a success, setting the foundation for future generations of our Carden community to educate with joy, growth, enthusiasm, dignity, and respect. That the Carden curriculum and philosophy has brought us all together, and has done so for 30 years, is certainly cause for celebration. The Carden experience has been for our family at times formidable. I remember attending a school event in which I overheard a comment from a parent saying that “at Carden the family members provide the support team for the students.” That not only has proved true, but left an indelible impression on me. I continue to be impressed by the genuine heart and soul that is imbued in even the day-to-day activities of this very special school of ours. Thank you again for making Carden the exemplary educational experience it is today. It is your enthusiasm and dedication that will carry us now and into the future. Tere Worsham Board President 2011 - 2012 Celebrating Our Mission and Vision The mission of Carden Arbor View School is to provide the highest quality education of the whole child using the Carden curriculum and philosophy—to educate with joy, growth, enthusiasm , dignity, and respect. 3 Anniversary Celebrations The school doors opened on August 31, 2011, the first day of school. A very exciting first day as the school begins the celebration of our 30th year! On Friday, September 2, 2011, a celebration cake was shared with all the students, families, and staff to kick off the 30th Anniversary festivities during our morning assembly. On September 23, 2011, over 300 guests arrived in the “Enchanted Forest” at Imagine That! to meet and welcome twenty-two new families to the school’s annual FALL GALA and 30th Anniversary Celebration. It was a beautiful evening where new and returning families enjoyed dinner and were entertained by CAVS students. Everyone had a wonderful time. We honored our new families, the founder of our school, Mrs. Humphries, and we cut the anniversary cake to celebrate 30 years of providing academic excellence. Carden hosted its first Chamber of Commerce mixer to celebrate the 30th Anniversary. The evening event was attended by many families board members, alumni, city officials, including Mayor Ray Musser, and other community members. The anniversary event resulted in creating more goodwill and awareness for the school’s educational program and the mission of Carden Arbor View School. Many members of our own community provided food, spirits, and door prizes for the event. 4 Celebrating our Mission and Vision throughout our School Community Parent Faculty Organization— Our PFO organization led by Mrs. Seagull held many successful events during 2011-2012. Mrs. Nelson’s book fair in September, earning over $3,500 in book credits for our school, the planning and coordination of the Fall GALA anniversary celebration dinner for over 300 guests , Fresh & Easy Shop Night, the Reign Hockey game, and night out with the Quakes at the Epicenter were all great events that helped to build community awareness and spread Carden spirit throughout the school. Special thanks to all of our PFO volunteers for their enthusiasm and dedication to making these events successful! Arbor View Society — Over 86% of our school participated in the annual fundraising campaign, Launching A Brighter Tomorrow, chaired by Mrs. Baldwin and Mrs. Poupard, with over $43,000 received in generous gifts from our families, staff, board of trustees, alumni, and corporations. We wish to thank you all for your gifts, which enable the school to provide the extras that tuition does not cover and build for our future. CAPER — Carden Derby & Dice was the theme for the 30th Anniversary CAPER. This event celebrated the achievements, perseverance, excellence, and responsibility of the students at CAVS. The evening included a night of gaming, bidding on silent and live auction items , casino gaming, and enjoying the first Horse Derby, featuring Carden student class project wooden horses. It was a great time for all who attended! In June we continued to celebrate 30 years of academic excellence by attending the All Things Kids Expo at Victoria Gardens. Our first grade class presented the Lion Sleeps Tonight, sharing their talents, joy, and enthusiasm with the audience on center stage! Our tabletop exhibit was a great success as we shared the values and benefits of being a part of our school with Inland Empire families visiting the event. Thanks to our Board of Trustees and volunteers who helped at the booth. 5 2011-2012 John Sullivan Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service to our School Ms. Elizabeth Tinsley The John Sullivan Award recognizes a volunteer who has contributed to our school in an outstanding and positive manner beyond those hours stated in our Parent Participation materials. Over the past nine years, you have seen the familiar, smiling face of Ms. Liz Tinsley. She is a volunteer who works at every event and graciously has given hundreds of hours to our school. The Carden community would like to thank Ms. Tinsley for her support and commitment to our school. Since enrolling her daughter Sarah in school over nine years ago, Ms. Tinsley has always been there! From serving food, setting up a booth, stringing lights, decorating a table, planning at a PFO meeting, driving on a field trip, or bringing snacks to sports functions, Ms. Tinsley can be found working with a smile. Thank you, Ms. Tinsley, for your outstanding volunteer service. "Volunteers don't necessarily have the time, but they have the heart.” (Author Unknown) 6 Gifts to the Annual Fundraising Campaign On behalf of Carden Arbor View School, the Board of Trustees, faculty, and students, we express our gratitude and appreciation to our families, friends, and businesses for the generous support and participation in Arbor View Society and our annual CAPER event. We are proud of our trustees and commend their leadership skills and commitment to CAVS and its mission. The Board of Trustees is the school’s guardian of the mission statement. The Trustees consult with the advise of the Head of School. We want to encourage parents, if interested in being a part of the Board, to serve on one of the board committees for at least one year. This will help to educate perspective trustees on how committees work and how the board works with committees. This becomes an important step toward trusteeship and is generally used as a tool to recruit potential trustees. 10 The 30th Anniversary Graduation Class On June 14, 2012, the Class of 2011-2012 closed their elementary years as they walked up the aisles at the DoubleTree Hotel in Ontario in celebration of their educational achievements.
