Best regards, Gord www.themonty.com As we turn the page and enter 2012 we will make one prediction and one prediction only-2012 will continue in the footsteps of 2011 and be a profitable and busy year for virtually everybody in the worldwide heat treating industry (it should be pointed out that our previous predictions were a mixed bag when it came to accuracy with our biggest blooper being that salt heat treating would diminish-we still haven't lived that one down). However we feel comfortable predicting that 2012 will be a good year in the industry and our best advice would be to ignore the clouds of doom and gloom that seem to be hanging over the world. To start off the new year we have a number of "odds & ends" about the heat treating industry that occurred over the past couple of weeks. Acument Global Technologies in Belvidere, Illinois, USA suffered a small fire in their heat treating department over the holidays. With damage estimated at $30,000 USD this is little more than a new paint job. Acument is a global supplier of fasteners that does in house heat treating at a number of their locations. Scott Calardo has spent most of his working life in the heat treating industry in North America with quite a bit of that time spent with commercial heat treating giant Bodycote. Recently he was splitting his time between Bodycote and some other customers however within the last couple of months he again became a full time Bodycote guy doing troubleshooting for the company's automotive division which means he will be spending time in North America and also in Asia. Alphatek of Texas, Inc. based in Houston, TX is a consulting company supporting the Thermal Processing industry started late in 2011 by Paul Zetler a fellow who has worked with firms such as Mercer Inc. The company has started off with a bang and Paul recently hired Randy Jones, of Terre Haute, to help him out as Midwest Project Manager. Hayes Heat Treating in Rhode Island, USA is celebrating it's 50th birthday this year-1962-2012 which is quite a milestone. Hayes is a Nadcap approved heat treater and is certified to AS-9100C and ISO 9000:2008. At one point the company was part of new furnace builder CI Hayes which a number of years back (if I remember correctly) was acquired by Sinterite Furnace Division another new furnace builder in St. Mary's PA. Anomatic Corporation in Newark, Ohio, a supplier of anodized aluminum packaging equipment recently received a "Red Devil" heat treating furnace from Lucifer Furnaces. While 2011 was a good year for most it certainly was not perfect. Below is our list of the five worst things to happen in our industry in the past year. December 22/2011 www.themonty.com • • • • • • • • • • • • • • "FOUNTAIN INN, S.C. -- A Greenwood man suffered fatal burns early Friday after he fell into a superheated pit at a Laurens County plant, according to the coroner. Laurens County Coroner Nick Nichols said Jared Lee Rousey, 29, died as a result of the industrial accident. Nichols said emergency crews were called to the Fisher Barton plant in Fountain Inn at 2:15 a.m. The accident happened as Rousey was preparing a heat treatment that is used to treat metals, Nichols said. The job involved dumping salt into a pit that is heated to extreme temperatures, according to Nichols. The temperature of the pit at the time of the accident was at 600 degrees, Nichols said. The pit reaches temperatures "much, much higher," he said. Nichols said Rousey was alive after the accident and managed to get himself out of the pit, but no one saw him fall in. Fisher Barton South Carolina Inc. is a supplier of precision metal stampings, welded assemblies and heat-treated products, according to its website. The company provides low-to high-volume metal components for a variety of industries, including automotive, industrial, lawn and garden, material handling, hand power tools, transportation, outdoor products and agricultural, the website said. An autopsy was set to be performed Friday afternoon in Greenville, Nichols said." Human Resources. The number one complaint amongst heat treaters worldwide is the shortage of good people. Metallurgists, Engineers, Heat Treat Supervisors, QC individuals all are in short supply. Whether this is because the is a "mature" industry with a high percentage of older individuals, whether the recession forced a number of qualified people into other fields, possibly the industry is not attracting enough younger people or most likely a combination of all three of these means that many positions are going unfilled. Rather ironic when you see the persistently high unemployment figures. Uncertainty around the world. Yes 2011 was a good year for manufacturers but not according to the mainstream media which has consistently and persistently been peddling "the sky is falling" story. There is this enormous disconnect between what we see as heat treaters and manufacturers compared to what the media would lead us to believe. So while things are good for the time being "the sky is falling" theory does tend to hold back new investments. Low margins. First came globalization which lead to increased competition and lower margins and then came a global recession to really "put the boots" to healthy profit margins meaning margins amongst equipment suppliers and heat treaters has shrunk to near record lows. Well globalization is not going away and we all know price increases are a hard sales pitch. Bottom line is "it ain't going to get any better". However a number of commercial heat treaters have found that by culling their list of customers keeping the good ones and ditching the low profit customers has turned into reduced overall sales but increased profits so there is a small bright spot. www.themonty.com Accidents. Unfortunately at the end of the day heat treating can be a dangerous business. While no exact figures exist about the total number of accidents that occur each year in the captive and commercial heat treating industry there are unfortunately deaths within the industry each year. 2011 was no exception with two in the US, one at a Bearing Manufacturer and the second from February 2011 below. I still feel for this fellow and his family. The Five Best Things About 2011. From the depths of the recent recession the worldwide heat treating industry rose to almost new records in 2011. Let's have a look at some of the high points; December 21/2011 Natural Gas Pricing. The lifeblood of most heat treaters is natural gas and gas pricing is currently at almost record lows and is expected to remain so. Nickel Pricing. If natural gas is the lifeblood of most heat treaters nickel is the backbone. As the basis for most alloy components for heat treating furnaces (radiant tubes, belts, baskets, fixtures etc.) the price of nickel has a direct bearing on the bottom line of all heat treaters. The chart below shows that nickel is close to its lowest price for the past 5 years and all forecasts suggest that this will not change in the near future. www.themonty.com Turmoil in Mexico. With NAFTA and the proximity to the enormous US market many manufacturers looking at lower cost areas to do business have selected Mexico as their location of choice (in particular the auto industry). To date this has been a reasonably good decision however the escalating violence in Mexico is at least making some companies pause in their Mexico investment plans. Friends in Mexico claim that the violence is being "overblown" by the media and that what violence there is, is generally relegated to a few certain areas usually away from the central Mexico area where most of the manufacturing facilities are located. I would not dispute this claim but violence in Mexico ranks as a potential issue down the road. Sales. MTI (Metal Treating Institute) figures show that sales for commercial heat treaters in 2011 were up substantially from 2010 which in turn was up from 2009. www.themonty.com Trade Shows. The year saw a number of very successful trade shows from Therm Process in Düsseldorf, Germany in June, to Wiesbaden, Germany in October to ASM in Cincinnati, Ohio in November. Every show saw almost record breaking attendance and enthusiasm not seen for several years. New Orders. Virtually every single supplier to the industry saw improved sales. From alloy to controls, to new furnaces it was a banner year for most. AFC-Holcroft, Ipsen and ALD all landed multi-million dollar orders in 2011-in some cases these orders were worth over $10 million USD. Name a furnace company, Aichelin GesmbH (Austria), Surface Combustion (USA), Hightemp Furnaces Ltd. (India), Mattsa (Mexico), Combustol (Brazil), MTH (Germany) and I will show you a company which had an excellent year. Paulo Products/GM Approval. The press release below comes from Paulo Products, either the third largest or fourth largest commercial heat treater in North America (when we finally get out list of the largest commercials put together early in January we will know for sure). December 20/2011 "Paulo Receives Approval as a Heat Treat Source for General Motors Powertrain. St Louis, MO – December 13, 2011 – The St Louis, MO facility of Paulo Products Company has successfully completed all necessary testing and has received provisional approval as a supplier to the Powertrain Division of General Motors. This approval authorizes Paulo to heat treat per GM Casting Tooling Standard HPDC-G-2 for GM tooling sources and others who utilize the GM Spec. GM Powertrain primarily makes components for GM cars and trucks. The division also sells engines, transmissions, castings, and components to many other automotive, marine, and industrial customers. In order to heat treat components for GM suppliers, the heat treater must successfully pass furnace performance tests as well as material testing. This achievement demonstrates Paulo’s capability and commitment to meet the world class requirements of GM’s Specifications. Paulo – St Louis joins Paulo – Nashville as two of the select few heat treaters who have the GM approval. “We are extremely pleased with this accomplishment. It reflects the capability and quality of our equipment and our people. It will benefit us as well as our customers.” says Bob Innes, St Louis Plant Manager. Paulo plants in St Louis and Nashville feature vacuum heat treating with 10-bar quench capability. Paulo provides heat treating, brazing, and metal finishing. The St Louis, MO plant is a full-service heat treat facility offering batch and continuous atmosphere heat treating, vacuum, induction, press and plug quenching, hot flattening, www.themonty.com http://www.heattreat.net/ "MTI's research firm reported this month that sales for the Metal Treating Industry for September 2011 totaled $731.9 million, a gain of 21.8% from 2010 when sales for January-September equaled $600.8 million. September 2011 sales for the Metal Treating Industry amounted to $85 million, an increase of 15.7% over September 2010 sales which reached $73.4 million. All nine MTI districts reported higher sales in September compared to the previous year. MTI's trend graph continues to show an upward trend in sales leading into 2012." (note that while MTI members are largely in North America sales figures from heat treat associations around the world showed a similar trend). straightening, cryogenics, blasting, brazing and black oxiding. Paulo also offers a broad range of metallurgical services and extensive engineering resources. Paulo has a plant and headquarters in St Louis, MO as well as plants in Kansas City, MO, Nashville, TN, Murfreesboro, TN, and Willoughby, OH." "New Hot Zone Design Reduces Power Loss By 50%. Souderton, PA. 12/12/11- The R&D team at Solar Atmospheres has developed a new hot zone design concept to reduce vacuum furnace power losses (kw) by up to 50%. Energy loss has long been a concern among vacuum furnace engineers. However, solutions to this problem have been extremely slow in coming to market. Solar's new hot zone design will be a rare and notable advancement for the heat treating industry. This innovation was based on thermal loss calculations paired with extensive laboratory vacuum furnace testing. The improved hot zone will be more energyefficient in the same insulation dimensions and without compromising vacuum performance. Although initial costs are somewhat higher, payback with reduced energy costs is expected within the first year of operation with significant savings to occur in the following years. To testdrive the design and make a direct comparison to current hot zones, Solar Atmospheres is rebuilding a mid-size production vacuum furnace hot zone in its corporate headquarters, Souderton, PA. Very careful power measurements will be obtained with a Fluke Model 1735, true RMS, power computer and with fixed hot zone thermocouples placed within the new hot zone insulation system at soaking temperatures of 1600 F, 1800 F, 2000 F, 2200 F, 2400 F, 2600 F and 2800 F to prove out the design. Testing will begin in early 2012 so results "proving out" this design will be released in the near future. ABOUT SOLAR ATMOSPHERES; Solar Atmospheres is the world's largest provider of commercial vacuum heat treating services. Through unmatched technical expertise, equipment, and quality assurance, Solar's thermal processing produces bright, scale-free parts with minimal distortion. For clients requiring an "out-of-the ordinary" application, an in-house R&D team of metallurgists and scientists develop innovative, custom process solutions. Serving over 18 markets, Solar's state-of-the art services include brazing, carburizing and nitriding. With over 50 furnaces ranging from lab sized to the world's largest commercial vacuum furnace, Solar can efficiently handle any size job. Headquartered in Souderton, near Philadelphia, Solar also operates plants in Hermitage, near Pittsburgh and in Fontana, California, near Los Angeles. Please visit www.solaratm.com for more information." Odds & Ends. I thought we had recently concluded our list of "Rising Stars" in the industry however we had some late suggestions which we will mention (but this is it, promise). www.themonty.com Solar Atmospheres/Hot Zone Power Loss. The press release below makes the claim that with a new design of Vacuum Furnace Hot Zone developed by Solar that the higher initial cost will more than pay for itself within the first year (if we understand correctly). A very ambitious, interesting statement. December 20/2011 Cryogenics vs.; Heat Treating. From the Worcester Telegram comes this rather interesting article about the Cryogenic Institute of New England Inc. The basis of the article is that this company which offers cryogenics can be an alternative to heat treating. December 19/2011 "When will this 'institute' decide what it wants to be? In an unassuming building on a residential side street off Shrewsbury Street sits the new home of the Cryogenic Institute of New England Inc. Founded in 2002, the institute recently moved into a blocky office building at 78 Chilmark St. After years of renting, the company finally owns its space. Robin A. Rhodes, the institute's president, said the company will likely hit $1 million in sales this year. With 10 employees and a solid business plan, the company is looking to triple its sales and double its workforce in the next three years, he said. I call it a company with good reason. Behind its lofty title, the institute is actually more of a service business than a research facility. It's a private, forprofit business. Despite being called an institute, it does not have classes or symposiums. It does not do research for research's sake. "We're not a university, we're not a nonprofit," explained Mr. Rhodes, "but we do applied research for industry. If industry presents with a problem, we look for solutions." The institute's solutions generally involve freezing stuff to ridiculously low temperatures, such as some high-end gun barrels the institute recently chilled in liquid helium to nearly absolute zero, which is a cool minus 459 degrees Fahrenheit. The institute got the gun barrels to minus 453 degrees. So why is it freezing gun barrels? Mr. Rhodes said that the U.S. government's big guns that hang off helicopters and Humvees have the annoying tendency to become less accurate as they heat up from repeated firing. The alignment shifts slightly when the barrels are hot. But if they are frozen, then heated up, he said, those alterations in the gun barrel's metal are minimized. As added bonuses, the gun barrels last longer and are easier to clean, he said. The institute does similar work for an ambulance company, Vital Emergency Services, and a limousine business, Knight's Airport Limousine Service, both of Worcester. The institute freezes the brake rotors for fleet vehicles at a cost of about $50 per rotor. The www.themonty.com "Thomas Streng", Managing Director HEESS GmbH & Co KG. HEESS based in Germany is the world’s largest manufacturer of press quenching systems. "Tom Nash" of International Search Partners was also nominated. ISP is a recruiting company which concentrates on the heat treating industry and in his first year he will blow by ISP's Rookie Sales record for the year. "Nova Analytical Systems" of Hamilton was acquired by Tenova. Nova gas analyzers and portable dewpointers can be seen in a number of heat treating operations. "SKF" (bearings) inaugurated its Global Technical Centre in India (GTCI), in Bangalore, India. Plans have this centre having 400 engineers by 2015 up from their current headcount of 115. Plans also include adding heat treating equipment to the laboratory at this location. "Textron" in Rockford, Illinois is getting ready to install a brand new Titan horizontal vacuum furnace. And there you have it for December 19/2011 Where Are They Now? This past week we ran across two individuals that we had lost touch with. Chris Paxos started and ran a commercial heat treating facility in Canton, Ohio by the name of PPC. The company specialized in annealing work and for a period of time went head to head with Atmosphere Annealing (as a matter of fact PPC was almost directly across the street from one of the Atmosphere Annealing facilities). Things change and PPC closed down about a year ago. As it turns out Chris is now President of Scidera, Inc., in Canton, a firm involved in Biometrics which is quite a change from commercial heat treating. Bob Antaya was Sales Manager at Dry Coolers in Oxford, Michigan a company that offers water cooling systems for the heat treating industry. Bob parted ways with the company some time back and has ended up as President of Fluid Cooling Systems also in Michigan and no surprise they offer water cooling systems. December 16/2011 Bodycote. Yesterday on the website the "London Evening Standard" appeared the interesting opinion piece below. Rumors about a possible takeover bid for Bodycote (one of the world's largest commercial heat treaters and the only truly international one) have swirled for a number of years and will undoubtedly continue. Makes for interesting if rather speculative reading. December 15/2011 "Bodycote warmer as it is tipped to wrap up a takeover soon? Could the New Year bring in a new owner for Bodycote? The temperature was being raised around the heat-treating firm today as investors switched on to talk that it was "ripe" for a takeover. In 2007, the engineer rebuffed a number of approaches from Switzerland's Sulzer, yet last July Bodycote's honcho Stephen Harris admitted he was open to offers if the price was right. Panmure Gordon's Oliver Wynne-James believes we could find out what he means by this sooner rather than later. Noting the group's share price has lost over a third in less than five months, the analyst said that now was the "time to go private". Wynne-James complained the market was ignoring Bodycote's recent repositioning work and added Bodycote was a much more attractive proposition than peer Charter, which is being bought for £1.5 billion by Colfax. "The compounded returns for a new owner are sizeable," claimed a bullish Wynne-James, who kept his buy advice as Bodycote climbed 2.5p to 258.6p." www.themonty.com rotors work better, Mr. Rhodes said, and last three times as long. The cost of freezing the rotors pays for itself in lower maintenance costs. The institute is going through its own transformative process, Mr. Rhodes said. It has expanded its array of services beyond freezing stuff, to cleaning stuff with dry ice. How does it work? A company called Cold Jet in Loveland, Ohio, makes machines that propel dry ice through a pressurized nozzle to clean with the same effectiveness of power washing or sand blasting, but without the water or sand. That might not sound like much of an accomplishment, except when you consider that the dry ice just turns back into a puff of carbon dioxide upon contact with the hard surface being cleaned. That means no mess. And if you own a company that does precision molding or manufactures medical devices, cleaning your equipment with dry ice instead of water or sand makes sense. The institute recently became the Northeast sales and service vendor for Cold Jet. The institute has aggressively entered the cleaning business. It is a bit of a mystery to me why this company is not growing faster than it is. Perhaps too many people associate cryogenics with cryonics, that quackery of a nonscience that has people believing their frozen heads can someday be reanimated. Or perhaps the idea that freezing metal can provide as many benefits as heat treating hasn't taken hold. Or, perhaps, the institute, which is really a service business, is still figuring out what it wants to be when it grows up." Nakal/Russia. Nakal is a Russian company about their gas nitriding technology. Damian seminar the company hosted and gives us a fun part of the seminar-hunting and shooting December 15/2011 that has made some very impressive claims Bratcher of SSI recently attended a technical report about both the seminar and the really (both of which are dear to this editors heart). In the summer, he goes outside for his target practice. In the winter he sets up in the lab. He uses a Kevlar blanket to stop the arrows. Marc Ruetsch and I were given the opportunity to take aim on the fox that resides in the lab as well as the swinging target. You can see the results of our shooting. Not bad for beginners! Vladimir was kind enough to show Svetlana Petrova and Irina Shumova how to shoot, and, in the end, we had some homemade drinks based upon…Vodka. It was a great conference attending by more than 20 companies from all over Russia. It is an honor for Super Systems and AFC-Holcroft to participate in the annual NAKAL technical seminar and, to be trained, by the great Vladimir!" The lab at NAKAL Svetlana Petrova being taught how to shoot the crossbow by Vladimir Syropyatov www.themonty.com "NAKAL has a technical seminar every December for their customers. The focus this year was controls and automation. Super Systems presented two papers and AFC-Holcroft presented one. The other papers were presented by members of the NAKAL team including Nikolay Ityaksov (President and Owner), Evgeny Ilichev (Sales Director) and the man who many customers came to see, Vladimir Syropyatov. Vladimir Syropyatov runs the ‘lab’ at Nakal. He researches new processes, new materials, new methodology and a host of other technical topics for the benefit of NAKAL and their customers. Since he is in the ‘lab’ for long hour watching what can be a slow and unchanging process, he has found a unique way to pass the time. Irina, Marc, Valdimir and Irina toasting to a successful conference and a great night of shooting. Note: Sveltana did not join the drinking as she is pregnant with her first. From the McDonough County Voice we have this news item about a small fire at captive heat treater and bearing manufacturer NTN Bower in Macomb, Ill, USA. December 14/2011 "Macomb, Ill. — An early Monday morning fire at the NTN Bower roller bearing plant on Bower Road destroyed switchgear electrical equipment and temporarily halted production on the plant’s heat treat line. The Macomb Fire Department responded to an area in the center of the plant just before midnight and was on scene for two hours.According to Jim Riggs, vice-president of manufacturing for NTN Bower, the fire, which occurred during the plant’s third shift, started when 45-year-old switchgear equipment “just failed and kind of melted.” Riggs said the switchgear equipment was due to be replaced soon and was installed at the time the Macomb NTN Bower plant was built. As of Monday evening, there was no estimate on the damage. About 200 Bower employees were on duty at the time of the fire, but no injuries were reported. Riggs said production on the heat treat line is expected to resume Tuesday." Piñata's in Front of the Furnaces? Carlos Torres of commercial heat treater CRIO in Queratero, Mexico sent us this Christmas item about a Christmas party in front of the Batch IQ furnaces which is a very interesting touch. December 14/2011 "Amigo I wanted to share this with you, every year on Xmas season we have something in Mexico called “posada” it is a religious celebration to welcome Xmas, we have a mass ceremony, then dinner together and the kids have a piñata which I have found foreigners find interesting - I do not why, maybe because I am so used to those since I was a kid, there a some cool photos of kids breaking the piñata in front of a UBQ and playing around. It is worth to mention that all furnaces were down for some hours and safety was essential www.themonty.com TITAN also provides real-time data acquisition and stores up to a thousand recipes. TITAN’s small footprint, manufacturing versatility, operational simplicity and financial flexibility (purchase, lease or rent) all add-up to greater profitability and response time. For more information on TITAN, visit http://ipsenusa.com/titan-index.php About Nagoya Netsuren Industry Co. Nagoya Netsuren Industry Co. is an ISO Certified company providing a wide variety of heat treatment services including gas soft nitridining equipment for precision parts, vacuum heat treat, salt bath heat treatment and much more. December 15/2011 for this to happen, Mexico is a very religious country and most of all companies have their Xmas celebration the 12 of Dec,( “virgin of Guadalupe day")" www.themonty.com Odds & Ends. Commercial heat treater Chicago Induction Metal Treating Corporation of Chicago, IL will be closing for business December 16/2011. Chicago Induction is a family owned business which has been around for a number of years and which as you would guess specialized in Induction Hardening. CRIO a commercial heat treater located in Queretaro, Mexico has just received their new Certificate under standards ISO 9001-2008 and AS9100 "C". This makes CRIO the first Commercial Heat Treatment facility certified under AS9100 "C" in the State of Queretaro and probably in the country. I can't say I am surprised, as you can see in the photo below it is a very clean, well organized operation. Hercules Heat Treating Corp., in Brooklyn, NY, won an $88257.72 federal contract from the US Naval Air Systems Command, Lakehurst, NJ, for heat treating services. Hercules is a family owned and run commercial heat treater who is one of the few in North America capable of and certified to heat treat aerospace landing gear (photo below). United Gear & Assembly, Inc., in Hudson, WI is finding business to be so good that they are hiring more workers for all departments in the plant including heat treating. United Gear makes gears that go into oil pumps, water pumps, all the way up to transmissions that go into Allison transmissions and Caterpillar transmissions for the heavy, off-road mining equipment. Their captive heat treat department was mentioned recently on this website when they went with UPC to update their furnace controls. Recently we had an excellent list of all of the worlds new furnace builder which was put together by Janusz Kowalewski of AFC-Holcroft (scroll down for a link to this list). I was very impressed but human nature being what it is a few readers mentioned to us about companies that were not listed. Recently we embarked upon a quest to find out from our readers who they would consider the "Rising Stars" of the industry-those who will one day be taking over from the older generation. We had a substantial number of suggestions all interesting, some of these individuals we know, others we have not run across before but in all cases we congratulate them. Our basic criteria were individuals relatively young, that are making a difference and received several votes. We have to confess that several would not have occurred to us and caught us by surprise but not up to us. Below are suggestions we received and we will emphasize that they are in no particular order and have nothing to do with the votes received. December 12/2011 Metcor Inc./St. Eustache, Quebec, Canada. Metcor, the largest commercial heat treater in the province of Quebec is making some major investments as you can see below. Interesting that the company purchased an Ipsen "Titan" vacuum furnace, this is the third company we have spoken to in the last two weeks that has purchased a "Titan". December 9/2011 "We are pleased to inform the heat treating market and customers of the recent investment done at Metcor Inc. in St Eustache Québec, to improve and give the best service to the Aerospace and Commercial Industry. Metcor Inc. did acquire a new computerize tensile testing machine to qualify our heat treatment processes and certify high strength steel components. We are now in qualification for a new Titan Ipsen Vacuum Furnace that got installed in November 2011, this action will increase considerably the heat treatment capacity in our vacuum furnace department. In the Aluminum heat treat department Metcor Inc. just did the purchasing of a new small – medium size bottom quenching air circulating furnace. This equipment will also be able to perform solution annealing water and waterpolymer quenching and age hardening of aluminum alloys. By these major investments Metcor Inc. will be positioned as one of the most important leader in Eastern Canada and USA, performing state of the art heat treatment for the Aerospace and Commercial market. Yves Morin, Sales Manager – Metcor Inc." "AFC-HOLCROFT DELIVERS UBQ FURNACE TO COMMERCIAL HEAT TREATER December, 2011 - A commercial heat treating operation located in a Gulf state within the United States has taken delivery of a new AFC-Holcroft UBQ Universal Batch Quench furnace, size 36-72-44. The furnace has a capacity of 6,000 lbs. gross, and is a near duplicate of existing AFC-Holcroft furnaces already running production parts for this www.themonty.com KGO Kaminski Giesserei und Ofenanlagen GmbH/Germany. We welcome out newest advertiser KGO (banner ad on the left side of this page), a new furnace builder in Germany that offers a very intriguing form of gas nitriding furnace. While KGO is quite well known in Europe they are not a household name yet in the Americas although this would appear to be changing. An example of this can be seen below, a photo we recently took of a KGO furnace less than a year old at one of the Bodycote, San Paulo, Brazil area plants. This represents an impressive investment by Bodycote and an impressive new installation by KGO. December 12/2011 Odds & Ends. "Al Hutwagner" who has been in the commercial heat treating industry for 20 years has a new position as Quality Manager/Metallurgist at American Heat Treat in Monroe, Connecticut. American is a growing commercial heat treat. Going to the West Coast of the US we see that commercial heat treater "Met-Tek, Inc." in Clackamas, Oregon has added another vacuum furnace to their facility. Met Tek was founded and is owned by Jerry Shriner, a fellow that will treat you like your long lost brother on your first introduction. " Spirit AeroSystems, Inc.", who claims to be world's largest independent supplier of commercial airplane assemblies and components has placed an order with Despatch Industries for a large aluminum annealing and aging oven. Delivery is scheduled for December 2011. Several Rising Star suggestions we have received recently include "Josh Rolfing", General Manager of Metals Engineering in Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA (commercial heat treating), "Jamie A. Jones", General Manager Solar Atmospheres Souderton PA., (commercial heat treating) and "Mike Cote", Alcon/Castalloy, Cleveland, Ohio (castings, fabrications). The "6th International Quenching and Control of Distortion Conference". September 10-13th 2011 the 6th international conference on Quenching and Control Distortion will be held in Chicago, Illinois, USA. This is a very interesting top end conference and well worth attending. For more info we would suggest www.asminternational.org/qcd December 8/2011 Comments We Get Lots Of. We constantly get comments, some good, some bad. Below we have two typical comments, one having to do with our poll about "Rising Stars" in the industry, the second from Lindberg about a recent list we posted about the number of new furnace builders in the world. Both were interesting and both we particularly liked because of their reports about how good business is. December 7/2011 Rising Stars/Scott Brown/CMI Industry Americas Inc. "Our Mr. Scott Brown fits this description. Dating back to the turn of the century, Electric Furnace Co (now EFCO) in 1913 started offered industrial furnaces of all kinds. The www.themonty.com customer. About AFC-Holcroft: AFC-Holcroft is one of the world's largest manufacturers of heat treating furnaces. I was sorry to see that Lindberg was excluded from the list. I’m curious what Mr. Kowalewski meant by companies classified “in pre-established order.” Going into our 100th year anniversary in 2012; Lindberg is still a very present force in the heat treating industry. While I agree with Mr. K’s note of overuse of certain terms; we are proud to highlight that Lindberg is wrapping up our best sales year in 2011 for the past 10 years. Business is very strong and 2012 looks to be as strong as 2011. Merry Christmas, Tim Josephs , Sales Manager-Heat Treat , Lindberg/MPH" (Editors note; We were very impressed by Mr. Kowaleski's list although we understand Mr. Joseph's comments). "For the first time in October/November 2011, PRI, the notfor-profit organization that administers the Nadcap program, held a series of symposia in Asia. The aim of these events was to provide information on Nadcap, including how the audit and accreditation process works, common non-conformances as well as to host technical sessions focused on special processes. Two symposia have been held to date, one taking place in Aichi, Japan and the other in Shanghai, China. Supported by the JAQG in Japan and COMAC in China, PRI Staff Engineers discussed Nadcap accreditation in chemical processing, NDT, composites and heat treating followed by question and answer sessions. Topics covered included an introduction to the Task Group, how to prepare for a Nadcap audit, what to expect during the Nadcap audit and a review of the relevant audit checklists. The symposia proved popular with delegates travelling from China and Japan to participate. In total, there were over 160 attendees in Aichi, and approximately 180 at the event in Shanghai." December 7/2011 www.themonty.com company has more than 6,200 references and still builds them in Salem, Ohio. Now part of CMI Thermline, we again concentrate on the heat treat market, booking three (3) orders for roller hearth furnaces in 2010. Scott is a graduate of Geneva College, Beaver Falls, PA. Scott does the heat balance and basic design calculations for the heat treat furnaces, among other things. Scott attended the ASM Heat Treat 2011 show in Cincinnati and also worked the booth at FNA in 2010. He is the young guy on the right side of the pic. The other pic is of a large roller hearth to be installed in early 2012 in Indiana. With Best Regards, Wynn H. KEARNS , Business Development , CMI Industry Americas Inc." Nickel Pricing. It brings joy to every heat treaters heart that nickel is not doing much of anything these days except perhaps dropping in price. December 7/2011 Solo Swiss/Felco. New furnace builder Solo Swiss (based in Switzerland which is no surprise) has just installed another new furnace at hand tool manufacturer Felso also in Switzerland. (For more info about Solo please see their banner ad on this page). December 6/2011 "SOLO Swiss Multiple Bell Furnaces Line for the hand tool industry. SOLO Swiss, a specialist of atmosphere furnaces, start up an automatic heat treatment line (Profitherm 300) for the company Felco in Switzerland. Currently the company has 88,000 square feet under roof but the new "F-class rotor repair" centre will add 24,000 square feet to this. The F-class rotor repair centre will offer in-house coating capability, automated 5axis laser welding, a metallurgical laboratory, and a machine and weld shop. The part of this story that is of most interest to our readers is the fact that it will also include a "high capacity vacuum and conventional heat treating facility" (I guess vacuum is not considered conventional heat treating). No word yet on who the suppliers of the heat treating equipment are. All in all sounds like an impressive operation. In the press release below Swiss new furnace builder Codere tells us about an installation they have at commercial heat treater HTU AG in the Konstanz region of Germany. December 5/2011 "HTU AF is a specialist in contract heat treatment, possessed various old fashioned installations that neither met their requirements or the current standards expected in the heat treatment market. HTU AG’s goal was to acquire a modern high-performance product that would meet the highest standards in their industry. As the volume of parts to be treated is relatively low, but very varied, the ideal product must be versatile and very flexible. This was important in both the variety of requested applications and the regular changes or variations in the treated priorities. HTU AG was looking for the alternative that would allow cooling of the loads in salt quench tanks to obtain martensite or bainite structures. This coupled with the possibility to vary various parameters with the aim of reducing or even eliminating deformations/ distortions. HTU AG intended to reduce or even eliminate residual austenite, the ideal product should be able to cool loads at -120°C. A follow-up of past production results including history of events and treatment protocol for each treated batch are stored. This can be viewed at anytime (user friendly). The installation must work in continuous, constant and consistent flow and a storage capacity of www.themonty.com This line has many applications, including: 18 loads. Meeting the required criteria, the automatic choice CODERE System 250 – 90 / 100 is chosen out of various relevant alternatives available." Is Heat Treating for Old Guys? Deservedly or undeservedly the heat treating industry has a reputation for being a staid, mature industry filled with older males. I find it hard to argue with this, unfortunately to some extent this is true and I am a good example (although middle aged would be more appropriate). We are not involved with a glamour industry that individuals will in most cases consider at a young age-rather most of us got into it by accident. At the recent ASM show in Cincinnati it was pointed out to me by a friend that there are some very bright, young individuals entering the industry and that they deserve recognition as being the "rising stars" in this business. I know in the past that we have had columns about the most influential people in the industry so it is high time that we looked at the "rising stars" who deserve some recognition. So today we are looking for suggestions, names of people relatively new to the industry that take it seriously and are enjoying what they do. Feel free to send us your suggestions at [email protected] To start things off some names that immediately come to mind are; James Cross (SSI, UK), David Rascke (Atmosphere Engineering) and Carlos Torres (Mattsa Crio, Mexico). So send us your suggestions and we will see what we come up with. Also upcoming is our annual list of the largest commercial heat treaters in North America. December 2/2011 Odds & Ends. Old Carco Liquidation Trust, owner of assets formerly owned by Chrysler LLC will be having an auction December 6th-8th, 2011 at their Kenosha, Wisconsin plant. Included are 2 fairly new Lindberg batch IQ furnaces. The fact that they are electric sill www.themonty.com Rising Stars in the Industry. A recent conversation with a friend about how heat treating is peopled with so many older fellows lead to the suggestion that we have a look at who are some of the rising stars in the industry-those who through hard work are making a difference. To date we have had a number of excellent suggestions as you can see below. Our plan is to listen to your suggestions and at the end of this week put together a list of those individuals whom you have suggested. To date our list includes Josh Longenette (Bodycote, Rancho Dominguez, California), Plant Manager, Trevor Jones (Solar Atmospheres, Souderton, PA) "Principal Engineer" R & D, Brad Luce and Rudy Saucedo who a couple of years back started Modern HT in Richland Hills, Texas, Chad Wright (Wirco), President, James Cross (SSI, UK), David Rascke (Atmosphere Engineering) and Carlos Torres (Mattsa Crio, Mexico).
