Holland Elementary? Students from Stephens, Valleyview and Highland City Elementary will be attending Spessard L. Holland Elementary. However, Spessard L. Holland Elementary is a Capacity Seat Option School. This means that the school is open to all students around the county. The school has a capacity of 825 students. Parents who live in, around or work in Bartow can apply for a transfer to go to Spessard L. Holland Elementary by contacting Pupil Accounting at 534-0718. Kidcare Kidcare is offered at Spessard L. Holland Elementary from 6:30 a.m.- 6:00 p.m. Location Situated on approximately 22 acres, Spessard L. Holland Elementary is located just south of Lakeland in north Bartow. An access road, Smith Lane, with a traffic light creates a convenient connection from Highway 98 to E.F. Griffin Road. Holland Elementary strives to engage students in grades K - 5 in exciting and innovative programs designed around the use of robotics to develop skills and motivate students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education. STEM Education will provide experiences for elementary students that encourage academic excellence, innovative thinkers, and problem solvers. Spessard L. Holland Elementary offers a variety of programs including: Art Music Gator News Network (GNN) Physical Education Gifted Spessard L. Holland Elementary Road Kidcare Speech, ESE classes Voluntary Prekindergarten and School Readiness Principal Melody Butler From 2003 to 2008, Melody Butler served as assistant principal of Carlton Palmore Elementary, Lakeland. She has also been a teacher of elementary grades and a writing resource teacher at Boswell Elementary, Auburndale. “As principal of Spessard L. Holland Elementary it is my mission to have engaging classrooms with passionate and innovative teachers who make learning come to life.” ~ Melody Butler S pessard L. Holland was Florida’s governor from 1941 to 1945 and a U.S. senator from 1946 to 1971. He was a leader in helping to pass the 24th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which outlawed the poll tax at elections. The law school administration building at the University of Florida is named for Holland. He was a graduate of Summerlin Institute. Upon review of Spessard Holland’s accomplishments, the committee chose his name for Polk County’s newest school. District three school board member Hazel Sellers explained the significance of naming the elementary school after a historical figure.
