Greetings from New Mexico State University!
As you begin to consider your higher education options, we invite you to join us at NMSU and discover why we are one of America’s Top
Colleges. NMSU is a welcoming and supportive campus community that transforms lives through discovery.
Let me share with you my NMSU story. As an undergraduate student many years ago, I had no idea what my future held. I was
fortunate to attend a school where the campus community was focused on student success. The faculty didn’t know at the time, but
they were preparing me to be the governor of the state of New Mexico, a successful businessperson and now the president of this great
institution.
What will you discover at NMSU? Here, you will find dedicated faculty members, many of whom are leaders in their fields and ready
to assist you in reaching your academic goals. Connect with a vibrant and diverse student body driven to improve the world. We offer
a great education at a great value. Learn about NMSU’s many financial assistance options that help students complete their education
without a mountain of debt.
Become part of the Aggie family, a network that will assist you throughout your lifetime. Take my word for it! NMSU is a great place
to take the next step in your educational journey. Our graduates remind me of this on a daily basis when I hear of the many great things
they are doing. Together, we can make your dreams come true.
Sincerely,
Garrey Carruthers, Ph.D.

Alejandra Gonzalez ‘17
Clothing, Textiles and Fashion Merchandising Major
The future of fashion lies in the hands of those with talent and a
good eye for detail. Still, what sets those who simply work in fashion
apart from those who create fashion is passion – an emotion Alejandra expressed so freely at a young age. In middle school, Alejandra
loved “handcrafts and sewing,” and by the time she was in high
school, she modified her clothes, adding her own vision to her style.
Now, thanks to the support of her parents, Alejandra is on her way to
the fashion runway. With family living in El Paso, Texas, and Juarez,
Mexico, this fashionista often has a one- to two-hour commute
to NMSU. A challenge, she says, that is well worth the time. “This
program has helped me improve my skills,” she added. “I dream to
one day be a fashion designer and open a clothing boutique with my
own designs and style.”

• 2.50 cumulative college GPA
Students participating in the Aggie Pathway program can attend
academic, cultural and athletic events on the NMSU Las Cruces

Bethany Blundell ‘16
Journalism, Communication Studies and Spanish Major
Bethany hopes to see the world; one of her goals is to visit six continents before age 25. But the nearby value of an NMSU education
prompted the native Las Crucen to stay home. “Before I enrolled at
NMSU, I thought I would simply spend a few years here, get a degree
and leave without much commitment,” Bethany says. “Then I started
attending classes here and realized there were so many amazing opportunities, I couldn’t help but get involved.”
Hard work and NMSU’s resources gave Bethany a taste of the media
field, including internships near Chicago. And she’ll never forget the
weeks she spent learning Spanish in Costa Rica. As her college days
wind down, Bethany savors her experiences at NMSU. She’s grateful
for her caring, knowledgeable professors. “I honestly couldn’t be
happier with where my life is at right now, and I’m so excited to see
where the future takes me,” Bethany says.

Start by completing the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at
fafsa.ed.gov. A paper FAFSA is also
available by calling the Federal Student
Aid Information Center, 800-4FED-AID
(800-433-3243). You can begin a FAFSA on
January 1 of each year.
NMSU’s FAFSA code is 002657
Apply early! Deadlines are usually
early in the year. Priority deadline for some

FAFSA has been completed. Your SAR
contains the information reported on your
FAFSA and includes your Expected Family
Contribution (EFC). The EFC, a measure
of your family’s financial situation, is used
to determine your eligibility for federal
student aid. Review your SAR information
and make corrections or changes online at
fafsa.ed.gov, if necessary. The school(s) you
list on your FAFSA will get your SAR data
electronically.

Determining Eligibility
for Need-based Aid
Many students receive a combination
of different types of aid, such as grants,
scholarships, work-study, waivers and
student loans for the same year. If you
qualify for multiple types of aid, your
NMSU financial aid advisor will assemble
an aid package.
University Financial Aid and Scholarship
Services establishes a budget based on the
projection of what it will cost you to attend
NMSU for a year. Your resources will be
subtracted from your budget. The amount
of money that is not covered by your own
resources is your need, sometimes referred
to as your eligibility.

Many factors go into figuring a
student’s resources when determining
eligibility. Some elements in the calculation
are the student’s savings, wage earnings,
college savings plans, other resources (such
as scholarships and veterans benefits), the
income and assets of the student’s family,
the number of family members in total and
the number who are currently in college.

for the upcoming academic year. You can

Terms of Your Award
• You must be classified as a degreeseeking student at NMSU to be eligible
for financial aid. Students who are
non-degree status are not eligible for
financial aid.
• Your financial assistance is awarded
based on merit or calculated need
as determined from the information
provided on your FAFSA. Financial
aid awards are subject to adjustment
or cancellation due to changes in laws,
regulations, appropriations, changes
reported or discovery of data error.
Part of your financial aid package may
include a student loan. There are three types
of Direct Loans: subsidized, unsubsidized
and PLUS. To accept a Federal Direct Loan
in your aid package, go to the Student tab in

Federal regulations specify that all
students who are borrowing a Federal
Direct Loan for the first time, or the first
time at NMSU, must complete a Debt
Management/Entrance Counseling session
before any loans will be processed, including
the Master Promissory Note (MPN). One
MPN is good for multiple disbursements to
the same borrower and can be used for one
or more academic years. Go to fa.nmsu.edu

• If you receive any financial assistance
from an outside source that is not
included in your award letter, you must
inform University Financial Aid and
Scholarship Services as soon as possible.
• Check your my.nmsu.edu email account
throughout the semester and during
breaks. Officialnotifications that require
timely responses will be sent only to your
official NMSU email address.
Your Award Timeline
If you are awarded a grant, student loan,
scholarship or waiver, funds will be
automatically credited to your account
during the first week of school (funds will be
applied to charges owed). If there are excess
funds, NMSU will forward the funds to
your direct deposit account or issue you
a check. Refunds are disbursed on dates
listed in the semester schedule of classes.
Submitting a late application may result in
funds being delayed.

Jessica Gonzalez ‘18
Elementary Education Major
Helping others and giving back to her community come naturally
to Jessica. During high school, Jessica contributed to academic
organizations, athletics teams and charity events. She even started
a tutoring program, all while holding a part-time job. With those
attributes and with the guidance from NMSU faculty, it’s no surprise
that Jessica is on her way to becoming a teacher.
Within her first year on campus, Jessica discovered the caring community that is NMSU. She fit right in. Jessica found friendly support
and multiple avenues to be engaged in campus life. She grew up in
a little town — Lordsburg, New Mexico — and wondered if she’d find
that spirit of togetherness amid the buzz of a large college campus.
“Now I know that it’s actually small enough to get to know people,
you just have to put yourself out there,” Jessica says. “I also found
that it is actually very easy to get involved.”

In 2011, Jessie traveled to Guadalajara, Mexico, on a medical mission trip. This experience allowed her to work with nurses but also

NMSU Ring
Aggie Fight Song
Homecoming Week
Graduating NMSU students who purchase
a ring can participate in a special ceremony
held in the fall and spring semesters prior to
graduation. After receiving their rings, students will wear them with the school name
facing inward. After the granting of degrees
at commencement, graduates turn their
rings around with the school name facing
outward, symbolizing they are now ready to
face the world.
“Aggies, Oh Aggies” is based on an old New
Orleans brass band tune called “Oh, Didn’t
He Ramble,” but it’s possible this song goes
even further back.
Aggies, Oh Aggies!
The hills send back the cry,
We’re here to do or die! Aggies, Oh Aggies!
We’ll win this game or know
the reason why!
And when we win this game,
We’ll buy a keg of booze,
And we’ll drink to the Aggies
‘Til we wobble in our shoes.
A – G – G – I – E- S!
Aggies! Aggies! Go Aggies!
Homecoming occurs every year mid fall
semester. Throughout the week, events are
held for students and alumni to attend. The
week ends with a football game and the
naming of the king and queen.
Painting of the “A”
The “A” on Tortugas Mountain is a longstanding tradition and a true symbol of
NMSU. In the early years of the university, students from the departments of
agriculture and home economics as well as
engineering would routinely place an “A”
somewhere on campus as an April Fool’s
joke. In 1920, students stood on the tower
of Goddard Hall to survey and lay out a
giant letter “A” on Tortugas Mountain. Students formed a bucket brigade on April 1 to
carry whitewash up the mountain and paint
the “A.” Almost a century later, NMSU
students still maintain the enormous letter.
During the Greek event “A Day of Service,”
students help repaint the “A” to keep it as
bright as possible. The “A” is lit up during
special events.
Crimson & White
Crimson and white are the official colors
of NMSU. Crimson represents passion and

Other activities during this event include
horse-drawn trolley rides, caroling and other
music.
On Fridays before a sporting event, NMSU

of the Aggies.
