The concert will be held in the City Hall and Warrensburg Police Department parking lot on Friday, May 29, 2015 from 7:00p.m.-9:00p.m. The band set to play will be Brandon Webb and Emily Russell- Tribe of Levites. Their passion is Christian music while also performing a mix of country, classic rock and old time favorites. Mayor, Robin Allen, stated, "It is exciting that the summer concerts are doing so well and continuously providing entertainment for the community." The band will perform on an elevated stage, provided by the University of Central Missouri. The south side of the parking lot and grassy areas will be accessible to guests to sit, and lawn chairs and blankets are highly encouraged. The City will provide free kettle corn and water during the concert. Please note that all children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Warrensburg Main Street is excited to welcome back the concert series as it enters its third year. Give me a call and we’ll get it set up! ~ Suzy 660-747-3168 www.warrensburg.org 10 Curtis Receives Honorary Doctorate from Alma Mater, MacMurray College Deborah Curtis, Warrensburg, provost and chief learning officer at the University of Central Missouri, received the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from her alma mater, MacMurray College, Edwardsville, Ill., during spring commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 9. Curtis was selected for the honor in recognition of her successes in enriching the experiences of countless students and teachers during her nearly 40-year career in education. “I am truly humbled by this recognition.” Curtis said. “MacMurray College was an important foundational part of my higher education experience. I am honored to have had the opportunity to speak to their graduates and share a bit of what this means to me.” Dr. Deborah Curtis Curtis received a bachelor’s degree in music education from MacMurray in 1972 and embarked on a career in education as a classroom teacher, coach, professor, dean and provost in secondary and higher education in Illinois and Missouri. She received a master’s degree in music education from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. degree in curriculum and instruction from Indiana State University in 1986. Following a career as a music educator and coach in public schools in Illinois and Indiana, she joined the faculty of the College of Education at Illinois State University in 1986. After rising through the academic ranks to professor, she was named director of clinical experiences and certification processes in the Teacher Education Center in 2001 and dean of the College of Education in 2006. Curtis was named provost and chief learning officer at UCM in 2012 following a nationwide search. She is responsible for academic programs and support services including the four academic colleges, the James C. Kirkpatrick Library, The Honors College, Graduate and Extended Studies, Enrollment Management, Student Experience and Engagement, Technology Services, and Institutional Effectiveness and Assessment. She leads and manages strategic planning, resource allocation and fiscal affairs for academic affairs and serves on the Strategic Leadership Team. Curtis and her husband, Lynn, a retired education administrator and coach, are residents of Warrensburg. Wegener Named UCM Student Employee of the Year Carl Wegener, a senior aviation major from Harrisburg, recently was named Student Employee of the Year at the University of Central Missouri. Wegener received the award during a reception in celebration of National Student Employment Week. Wegener was one of 19 UCM students nominated by faculty, staff and administrators for the honor. He is employed in aviation maintenance at Max B. Swisher Skyhaven Airport, the university-owned airport that also serves Warrensburg and the Johnson County, Missouri area. He has been employed at the airport since April 2014. In his position Wegener assist with supervised aircraft maintenance activities, including tire and engine maintenance, washing aircraft, running engines and taxiing aircraft. He helped design standardized work stations that ensure mechanics have all necessary tools and materials within reach, and he is recognized as one of the top welders in the shop. Wegener is also a member of the UCM Flight Team. As such, he has volunteered his time to create defects in aircraft that must be found by aviation students during preflight inspections, improving skills that have helped the flight team succeed in competition. “I have spent many years in the industry, and I know Carl will be highly successful in his chosen field,” said Stephen Quick, director of aircraft maintenance at Max B. Swisher Skyhaven Airport, in his nomination of Wegener. “His work ethic is evident in the quality of his work, and he has earned the highest trust and respect from the certificated mechanics. Sen. McCaskill to Host 2015 Procurement Conference at UCM Owners of small businesses can learn how to secure government contracts and network with potential contractors at the annual Procurement Conference Thursday, May 28, at the University of Central Missouri’s Elliott Student Union. The conference is hosted by U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, the Missouri Procurement Technical Assistance Centers and the Missouri Small Business and Technology Development Center at UCM. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by a welcome from UCM President Charles Ambrose and Whiteman Air Force Base officials. Following comments by McCaskill at 9 a.m., Janet Wilson, chief financial officer of The Wilson Group, Inc., will speak on successful government contracting. Harry P. Hallock, deputy assistant secretary of the Army, will speak on government procurement at 9:30 a.m. The featured speaker for the noon luncheon for the conference is Vice Admiral William Hunter Hilarides, commander of Naval Sea Systems Command. Hilarides oversees a global workforce of more than 56,000 military and civilian personnel responsible for the development, delivery and maintenance of the U.S. Navy’s ships, submarines and systems. He has served as director of Advanced Submarine Research and Development and program manager of the SSGN Program. As program executive officer for submarines, he was responsible for all new construction submarine programs, along with the acquisition and life cycle maintenance of submarine weapons, countermeasures, sonar, combat control and imaging systems. Hilarides received a master’s degree in engineering management from the Catholic University of American, completed Air Force Command and Staff College, the MIT Seminar XXI Program in International Security Affairs, and numerous acquisition schools. A 10:30 a.m. panel discussion will discuss “Selling to the Government: Just Big is the Market and What Can Your Business Handle?,” focusing on how to assess business potential in the government market and how to determine if a business is financially ready to move to that market. At 1:30 p.m. a panel will present the topic “I Won’t Do That Again; Best Practices from Businesses in the Know.” Business owners who have done business with the government will discuss how they overcame challenges to become successful in this market. “Government Contracts Seem Overwhelming? What About Subcontracts? Is There a Difference?” is the topic of a third panel discussion planned for 2:45 p.m. Panelists will discuss and provide information on subcontracting and what prime contractors require in qualified subcontractors. Exhibits by government purchasing offices and contractors will be available throughout the conference in the Elliott Student Union ballroom. The conference is open to business owners and interested individuals. A fee of $60 per person is required and includes lunch. Registration prior to May 22 is encouraged.
