On behalf of my
brothers in Holy
Cross, I wish for you
a blessed New Year,
and offer thanks for
the investment you've made in our work
to bring the message of Christ to the
world!
Just one year ago, the Province
introduced Pillars in an effort to
communicate the work of Holy Cross,
our ministries and our vision with you,
our friends and benefactors. Pillars
also provided us the venue to express
the integral role our benefactors play in
moving our mission forward – in
proclaiming the Kingdom of God.

forward with hope and a renewed
vision toward our goals and what
must be done to reach them.
Fr. Tony Szakaly, C.S.C., in his
reflection, Philanthropy Moves Our
Mission Forward, discusses the
history of the laity’s partnership with
Holy Cross and the challenges facing
the Indiana Province in the 21st
century. You’ll also read about how
philanthropy will advance our mission
into the immediate future.
While pie charts and figures may
provide a two dimensional picture of
where our gifts come from and where
they go, they do not do justice in fully
representing the generosity of those
who give, the sacrifices made, and the
stories of our benefactors. Likewise,
a shaded piece of a pie chart does not
illustrate the comfort on the faces of
the elderly priests and brothers who
receive care at Holy Cross House, the
hope a poor or homeless person feels
when finding a safe place to stay, or
the excitement in a young seminarian
whose mind and soul are growing
with each new experience.
In our effort to be good stewards of
the gifts you share with us, this issue
of Pillars will focus on the support we
have received this past year and where
these gifts have served Holy Cross. It
is important that the community of
Holy Cross provide an accounting to
you, faithful Christian stewards, as to
how your gifts are used in God’s
service. Through our commitment to
you, we hope to affirm your importance
as a steward of God’s gifts while

Philanthropy Moves Our Mission Forward
Rev. Anthony V. Szakaly, C.S.C., Assistant Provincial
Pillars
In 1837, our founder, the Venerable Basil Anthony Moreau, C.S.C.,
established the union of priests and brothers who were to become the first
members of the Congregation of Holy Cross. Just a few years later, in
1841, Fr. Moreau founded a group of women religious who would also
become members of the Holy Cross family.
Notre-Dame de Sainte-Croix
Fr. Moreau built this church
between 1842 and 1856. It was
consecrated the very year of the
pontifical approval of the
constitutions of Holy Cross in 1857.
Fr. Moreau’s passion was in preaching, Christian education, and in
foreign missions, which is no less true of Holy Cross men and women
today. Undoubtedly, as he organized this band of religious in Le Mans,
France and sent mission teams throughout the world, he relied heavily on
family, friends, and good-natured Christians to advance his vision. These
individuals likely assisted with travel and material goods for the
missionaries, became a source of support for them, inspired them and
propelled Moreau’s mission. And they provided the financial resources to
grow this sapling union into a vibrant, blossoming religious community.
The Holy Cross community of today continues to demonstrate Fr.
Moreau’s passion and continues to rely on the charity of others to maintain
our existing ministries. We also count on our friends and partners to provide the resources to advance into
new, innovative, and meaningful ministries to meet the needs of Christians and non-Christians alike
throughout the world.
The costs associated with operating the Indiana Province with over 300 members worldwide are
significant, particularly in light of our limited sources of income. Holy Cross operates on assessment
payments our religious receive from working at the University of Notre
Dame and the University of Portland, from our high school, from the
parishes we sponsor, and special assignments in which our religious are
placed.
Our retired religious receive social security retirement benefits,
but few receive any other retirement or pension plans from their life-long
ministries.
The reality is these sources do not sufficiently cover our operating
expenses so we must, like Fr. Moreau, look to those who share our passion
in Christ to help us meet the needs of this world through their gifts.
Your dedication is vital to our ministry, as was the dedication of
Fr. Moreau’s friends, and it will continue to be vital as we look ahead,
with hope, toward the future of Holy Cross and with our role as
ambassadors of God's love.
Holy Cross Parish and School
Established in 1929 by the Congregation of Holy
Cross, Holy Cross Parish and School continues to
thrive under the leadership of Holy Cross and the
vision of its founder, the Venerable Basil Anthony
Moreau, C.S.C.

In 2005, the Province was blessed to have received gifts totalling $760,133. Traditionally charitable gifts comprise
between 15% - 20% of the Province's operating revenue, further emphasizing the importance of donor support in the
mission of Holy Cross. These figures do not include gifts received through Holy Cross Mission Center or Holy Cross
Association.

Tomorrow's Promise
Time, place and circumstances differ, but the mission of the Congregation of Holy Cross remains urgently the
same: to proclaim the Kingdom of God.
Pillars
The Congregation of Holy Cross is comprised of men with hope to bring, men trusting that the
One who began the good work in them will bring it to completion.
Our planning entails a careful assessment of our present while being mindful of our history and
looking forward in faith to the needs of God’s children as they may evolve in the future. We recognize
the existence of Holy Cross is directly related to the needs of this world, for if each life accepted
Christ and lived as Christ calls us to live, our ministry and community would be drastically different.
Until God’s Kingdom is realized, there are millions of brothers and sisters who will need what Holy
Cross can offer – hope, peace, salvation, love - the living message of Christ.
In service to the world, our future efforts must concentrate on:
Formation – drawing new vocations to the Church and to Holy Cross and providing for
the best education and training available.
Education – being witnesses of Christ through our roles in secondary and higher
education.
Parishes – building local faith communities through our unique charisms of
evangelization, education and community.
Care for the Poor – a preferential commitment we make to the poor and oppressed,
exemplified in all our ministries.
Foreign Missions – proactively bringing Christ’s message to nations where the need for
hope, peace, salvation and love is most prevalent.
Care for our Elder Brothers – insuring those who have committed their life to Christ
and have invested their adult lives in that service receive the best, most compassionate,
care possible.
We are determined ambassadors of Christ’s message. We commit ourselves, every day, to the
mission of Holy Cross and to the Church so that we can proactively serve others. It is why we exist.
Our commitment to the future is not one we make alone, for the community of Holy Cross, the
Church and all its faithful, share in fellowship with our mission. Thus, as Holy Cross looks forward,
we do so inspired by the prayers and support so graciously given by friends, family, benefactors. And,
throughout this journey, we continue to invite those who profess a life in Christ to share, as good
stewards, their time, talents and treasure with us so that together the Kingdom of God may come to
fruition.
