I fell in love with him and his attitude and when he went up for sale in January of 2010, I jumped on it and purchased him. He won 5 races that year for me. Through the powers of the internet and friends of friends, I connected with Art’s breeder Elizabeth Keene. She told me everything about him as a baby and up until she made the heart-breaking decision to sell him. He was bottle-fed because his mother didn’t produce colostrum and that he loved to snuggle. She called him Little Arthur. Although we don’t see much of that side of him a whole lot he does pull it out occasionally, especially when it comes to my son Caiden. When they are together, it’s magical. August 2011, Art sustained an injury that we thought would end his racing career. Adam and I married in September and with Art’s future in mind, and we included him in our wedding vows. Art rallied back and after 10 months of R and R, he qualified in June of 2012. Although he isn’t what he once was, he made it clear to us that he will always be a race horse and earned his barn nickname, King Arthur. He lets us know when he needs a day off and there’s no arguing with him. There isn’t any guessing with him. He makes his needs known. 2013 has been a busy year for the King. He trained down to race, started under saddle work and began showing. He ended up getting Reserve Champion for In Hand at both Maine Horse Association and Standardbred Performance Society year end awards. Arthur will live out the remainder of his life with us. I plan to show him under saddle and because he sulks when he doesn’t get to jog, he will continue to train down every year with the babies as a prompter as long as he is able.” UP FOR ADOPTION? NO Page 4 BIGBADVOODOODADDY STATS V11402 Brown Gelding Pacer Registered Owner: Emily Marston, New Gloucester, ME ARTURO-ROSE ROUTH-NERO Lifetime Mark: 1:57 (Mea) Lifetime Earnings– $64,417 Career Starts: 183 Win: 27 Place: 21 Show: 22 Born: February 10, 1999 in Gettysburg, PA BIGBADVOODOODADDY is owned by Emily Marston. In her own words, she writes, “I purchased Bigbadvoodoodaddy "Voodoo" in 2005. Immediately he went out and won three of his first four races, and paid for himself. Voodoo raced for me for a number of years, bringing me my first training win, my first drive, my first cooler won at a fair, our first blue ribbon at a Standardbred Pleasure Horse Organization show, and so many other memorable experiences. Voodoo was known around the track for always having his tongue sticking out while wearing his bridle. Always racing to a close finish, he slowly crept up on the outside to pull out a win right at the end. In the winner’s circle, he was known to be a little too proud of himself and was unwilling to hold still. With 20 trips to the winner’s circle, Voodoo has supported me in many ways - paying my rent, mortgage, buying a horse trailer, and even facilitating the purchase of the mother of Outlawfrommontana. Following his retirement from the track, Voodoo started under saddle and is currently in dressage training at Freeport Equestrian Center. During his off season, he truly enjoys one activity: eating! He takes it quite seriously and has successfully joined the 'chub-club.' He may soon be making the long journey to Kansas to join me at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University. Voodoo is an incredibly special horse we have shared so many memories, and he most definitely has a special place in my heart and a home for life! UP FOR ADOPTION? NO Page 5 GOLD BALL STATS VA8910 Chestnut Gelding Pacer Registered Owner: Robert Larkin, Scarborough, ME TUCSON HANOVER-ANNA IRONSTONE-ON THE ROAD AGAIN Lifetime Mark: 1:56 at 4 years old (Rock) Lifetime Earnings– $69,819 Career Starts: 253 Win: 29 Place: 33 Show: 32 Born: March 31, 1999 in Temple, ME GOLD BALL is owned by Robert “Bubba” Larkin and was trained by Todd DuBois. Even though the chestnut pacer stood a bit smaller than the other horses in the Bubba Larkin Stable, he was always the King of the Farm. Gold Ball started his racing career in 2002 as a 3-year-old, then was purchased by Bubba Larkin, who raced him at along the new England harness racing circuit, including Plainridge in MA, Rockingham Park and Rochester Fair Grounds in NH, Scarborough Downs and all the Maine fairs. It was at Rockingham Park where he received his fastest lifetime mark of 1:56 as a 4-year-old. However, within the last few years Gold Ball has showed signs of slowing down, and hasn’t been racing since 2010 — His last start was at Fryeburg Fair in October of 2010. But Gold Ball has a bright future ahead (Bubba makes sure of this)! He has already been riding under saddle for the past five years, and is enjoying time on a 30-acre farm with 7 mares, whom he loves. Todd’s daughter, Samantha Dubois, rides him and already considers him a pet. Trainer Todd Dubois says, “he comes in every night first when you call his name!” That’s a smart horse! Gold Ball’s favorite snacks are apples. UP FOR ADOPTION? NO Page 6 LAZER ZONE STATS VG8112 Bay Mare Trotter Registered Owner: Ronald Patoine, OOB, Maine ARMBRO LASER-PLEASURE ISLAND-SUPERGILL Lifetime Mark: 1:59.4 at 13 years old (PRc) Lifetime Earnings– $38,391 Career Starts: 123 Win: 13 Place: 12 Show: 20 Born: May 7, 1999 in Dundee, OH LAZER ZONE, nicknamed “Mama Lazer” or just “Lazer,” is a gentle, statuesque trotting mare owned by Ronald Pontione of Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Patione purchased her as a 7-year-old at an Ohio sale for $1,400, only to realize there was a mix up with the numbers and he had gotten the wrong horse! He brought her to Maine and also discovered she was in foal! She had a total of 4 babies in her lifetime. She was always a sweet mare, who was no doubt grateful for the mix-up because she receives loving care from Patoine and his wife, Blanche. “One day after an Amish man offered me $50 for her, but I flatly refused.” Patione said. He knew this mare was something special. Lazer Zone started her racing career in Ohio as a 3-year-old but her owners thought she might make a better broodmare rather than stay a racehorse as she had a slightly crooked foot. But Patoine decided to start jogging her out on the track to see how she handled herself. Sure enough, she was a natural and had no problems. Racing mostly at Plainridge Race Course in Massachusetts, Lazer Zone grabbed a new lifetime mark of 1:59.4 as a 13 year old. The win photo you see here is from that special day. Her last start at Scarborough was November 22, 2013. Lazer Zone’s favorite snacks are carrots, which she gets every day. She lives on the Patione’s beautiful farm in Old Orchard Beach that has its own 5/8 mile track surrounding a pond. Her stablemates, also trotters, are a stallion named Foreign Authority and a little trotter named Ambershaylilkelly, both of whom Patoine races along the New England circuit. Patoine is happy to keep Lazer Zone with him, and will only consider a new home for her that is appropriate. He kissed her on the nose and said, “she’s very happy here with us. She’s a good girl.” UP FOR ADOPTION? Possibly, but it would have to be the perfect home, with an interview process. Page 7 RARE GLORY STATS VH0241 Bay Horse, Pacer RAGING GLORY-RARE TRICK-ALBATROSS Registered Owner: David Zuckerman, Norton, MA Lifetime Mark: 1:53 at 4 years old (PPk) Lifetime Earnings– $311,471 Career Starts: 349 Win: 74 Place: 61 Show: 47 Born: April 12, 1999 in Port Deposit, MD RARE GLORY is a very special 14-year-old, says owner David Zuckerman of Massachusetts. “In early 2012 my trainer and his wife left for the Poconos and were very grateful I offered to take Rare Glory. He hadn't raced for about 5 months and since he was an old veteran I decided he might be a horse for me to drive in the amateur races. I was told he may need extensive veterinary work to continue racing so before we went that route we found a vitamin supplement that seemed to work for him and with a lot of hard work, we got him back to the races for a very successful campaign as a 13 and 14 year old. He is a wonderful horse around the barn and often recognized as the best looking horse there. He is so quiet most don't even know he's a stallion! Rare Glory’s favorite snacks are bananas and of course carrots. As sheepish as he is at the barn he is a warrior on the racetrack. His record proves that! His plans for the future are trail riding and soon to be a registered stallion standing in the state of Maine, being handled by local trainers Aaron and Ryan Hall.” UP FOR ADOPTION? NO Page 8 SIMPLY MADE STATS V78153 Bay Mare Trotter Registered Owner: Arthur W. Campbell, Hollis, ME INQUIRER-SIMPLY SUPERIOR-COLEMAN LOBELL Lifetime Mark: 1:54.4 at 9 years old (CalX) Lifetime Earnings: $207,558 Career Starts: 339 Win: 55 Place: 50 Show: 43 Born: May 1, 1999 in Beach City, OH SIMPLY MADE is nicknamed, “Simpleton” but don’t let the name fool you — she is anything but! Owner Arthur Campbell describes her as a very smart Classy Lassie. She has the heart of a race horse along with all the class. All she wants to do is go fast on the track and in training. She is an extraordinary mare, who has bankrolled a total of $207,558 over her 14 year racing career, with an average $612 per start. On the track, Simply Made loves to see other horses go by her then pass them on the back stretch for the big finish. “I bought her in 2012, my first race horse a trotting standardbred, to me there is no other race horse other than the trotter. It was a great idea to purchase her — with training and help from friends, it all paid off. She made $4,835 in 14 races with 2 wins. I raced her in 2013 but the speed of the other horses was way too fast for the big-hearted mare. So, I decided to bring her home and retire her. She was quick to become a great riding and trail horse with all the training that she had in her younger years under saddle. She made an appearance at Cornish Old Home Days in September, where I raced her under saddle. My wife and I are planning to breed her in 2015 with the hopes she can have a baby with all the class and heart that she has. Everyone who has owned her has loved her and they hated to lose her. What a great thing for me. It was meant to be for me and Simply Made. To me, Simply Made is simply the best.” UP FOR ADOPTION? NO Page 9 THE POWER OFWEALTH STATS VH7832 Bay Gelding Pacer FAKE LEFT-LUCK BE A LADY-HOLMES HANOVER Registered Owner: Nicole M. Hardy, North Attleboro, MA Lifetime Mark: 1:53.1 at 9 years old (Chst) Lifetime Earnings: $339,560 (both foreign and domestic) Career Starts: 216 Win: 39 Place: 33 Show: 24 Born: September 18, 1999 in New Zealand THE POWER OFWEALTH, owned by Nicole Hardy, is nicknamed, “Clarkie.” He is the first horse that Nicole ever officially owned. She says, in her own words, “I bought him off one of my dad’s (Jim Hardy) owners. His first start was at Scarborough — I rode up from the paddock to watch him race from the chute, shaking like a leaf, nervous as could be. Clarkie managed to finish 2nd for my first start as an owner — I was beyond excited! “After a few more awesome starts, Clarkie got hurt. Although he acted like his normal self, we took our time getting him healthy again. Nevertheless, for his first nerve-wracking start back at Plainridge Race Course, he won! He went on to exceed my expectations as a 14-year-old, time and time again. Clarkie is one of the most loving, humble and all around handsome horses I’ve ever been around. He has become a huge part of my heart and I couldn’t have asked for a better horse to call my own. I am so incredibly proud of everything he has accomplished and want to thank my dad, John Nason, and most importantly, Steve Nason for everything they’ve done for us this season. “Clarkie isn’t shy when it comes to snacks, but he goes nuts for jelly Munchkins from Dunkin Donuts. You can’t even walk in the barn with a Dunkin Donuts bag without h m starting to bounce his head up and down and talking to you until you give him some!” UP FOR ADOPTION? NO Page 10 URBANE STATS VC2176 Bay Gelding, Pacer ABERCROMBIE-POMPANO BELLE-BIG TOWNER Registered Owner: Roland B. Emerson, Hollis, ME Lifetime Mark: 1:54.1 at 5 years old (Nfld) Lifetime Earnings: $183,710 Career Starts: 254 Win: 36 Place: 34 Show: 34 Born: January 8, 1999 in Lexington, KY URBANE is owned by Roland Emerson of Hollis, ME. In his own words, he writes, “Urbane is a joy to have. He is the boss of the pasture but he will take a young horse under his wing and teach him respect and how to act, thus making them much better horses. He drives, works in draft and anyone can ride him. He is the classic example of the standardbred, in the prime of his life.” During his racing career, Urbane raced up and down the Eastern Seaboard, and throughout the Ohio racing circuit. His last win was in May of 2009 at Scarborough Downs. Roland bought him from Patty Switzer, but unfortunately, he never had a win with him but he enjoyed racing him. An injury sidelined Urbane so he officially retired from racing in November 2009. Urbane is one of the last offspring of the great pacing champion, Abercrombie, winner of more than $130 million. Of the 1700 Abercrombie foals, 403 have taken marks below 1:55, Urbane being one with his lifetime mark of 1:54.1. UP FOR ADOPTION? NO Page 11 VW BUG STATS VB0163 Bay Gelding Trotter STRIKING SAHBRA-ROCKETTE SAHBRA-FLAK BAIT Registered Owner: Paulette Brim, Gorham, ME Lifetime Mark: 1:57 as a 5 year old (Mea) Lifetime earnings: $121,108 Starts: 250 Wins:29 Place: 28 Show: 33 Born: February, 4, 1999, Streetsboro, OH VW BUG, whose current owner, Paulette Brim, nicknamed him “Bug,” retired from the race track in 2012 and entered the New England show ring as a Roadster under saddle. His first show was at Springfield, MA just months after his last race at Scarborough Downs. He entered the indoor arena like he owned it and received third place in a challenging class. VW Bug finished the show season as ASAM Standard bred Roadster under saddle Grand Champion and New England and Maine Horse Assoc. Reserve Champion in 2012. VW Bug in 2013 won every class in Roadster under saddle with his owner Paulette Brim in the irons! 2013 VW Bug won New England Horseman Council Roadster under saddle Champion, Maine Horse Association Roadster Champion and American Saddlebred Association Champion Roadster horse and Standardbred Roadster horse. 2014 VW Bug will enter the show ring under saddle as well as his first time to bike! VW Bug is enjoying his show ring career and the perks that go with it at Onwego Farm in Gorham, Maine. VW Bug was formerly owned and cared for by Cassandra Gasbarro, and Casey says, in her own words, “Herbie was the best, and you could do anything with him. He is wonderful around kids and he always knew when was a kid on his back, he was always a gentleman with them. “Herbie’s blacksmith, Clarke McDonald, would always love to shoe Herbie because before Clarke would even get to this next foot, Herbie would already have the next hoof up for him to work on. He is a very smart horse and loves attention, especially if you have treats. He has a wonderful new home with Paulette Brim only a few minutes from the track. He has his own pasture and enjoys his new life as a show horse. He loves what he does and does a wonderful job at it. He’s a fast learner: when I broke him to ride I rode him for three days then put in a horse show. He just does what ever you ask of him. He’s a one-of-akind horse.” UP FOR ADOPTION? NO Page 12 WOODMERE FULATRIX STATS V61597 Bay Horse Pacer DROP-OFF-TRICK OF THE NIGHT-SANSOM Registered Owner: Wilbur Cluff, Sr., Arundel, ME Lifetime Mark: 1:55.3 as a 5 year old (PRc) Lifetime earnings: $95,942 Starts: 150 Wins:30 Place: 29 Show: 26 Born: May 26, 1999 in Charlottetown, PEI WOODMERE FULATRIX, or “Woody” was born in Charlottetown, P.E.I., where he raced as one of the top contenders in the Sire Stakes. Wlbur “Wib” Cluff Sr. became his proud owner in 2003 after picking him out of a sale catalog. Along with Woody, came a bag of carrots and instructions from the previous owner. “He loves carrots, doesn’t like a head pole, and don’t ever try to put a stud support on this horse”. Woody raced in the Open classes at Scarborough and Plainridge. In 2004, he was voted Hot Hooves of the Year by MEHarness.com’s Year-End Honors. He got his lifetime mark of 155.3 in May of 2004, beating it three races later finishing in 153.3, getting nosed out in a photo finish. Being invited to participate in the Paul Bunyon Invitational, Walter H. Hight Memorial Pace, Mount Skipper Invitational and winning the Open Preferred Home Builders Invitational Pace at his home track in Cumberland were exciting highlights. With a big smile on Wib’s face, you could always hear him and daughter Polly cheering Woody on. Due to a recurring injury, Woody was forced to retire from racing in 2010. This stallion is a gentle soul with a wonderful personality. Now under saddle, he gets a kick out of being in the riding ring at Cumberland when there are horses training. He keeps an eye on them, watching, waiting for them to come around the turn and then try to race them the length of the ring. You can take the horse out of racing but you can’t take racing out of this horse! Having much love and respect for Woody, Wib made arrangements for him to be cared for, along with Polly’s promise of watching over him, the rest of his life. Woody remains at the Watson Stable where he is loved and gets wonderful care. Being formally retired the same year his beloved owner passed away is bittersweet. Looking forward to today’s ceremony, Wib had told Polly, “Woody raced his heart out, he deserves this. I will be at the fence, crying like baby when you lead him out.” UP FOR ADOPTION? He would be free to anyone who can provide him with a good, stable home. His owner said based on his sweet temperament, and what a pleasure he is to be around, he could probably be taught to ride under saddle in a day or two.
