I would like to thank Ville Karaila for planning the Casa de Fruta trip. I really taking these back road trips. I haven’t been on Hicks Road in years, but it was great taking the car though that part of the valley. It always seems to be a chocolate stop on these car runs. While I was a DeBrito’s, I ended up spending twenty-five dollars. During our stay at Casa de Fruta, I found myself spending another forty bucks on a train ride, mining for gold, and a really great lunch. There were twenty people and ten cars on this run and a great time had by all. I’m really looking forward to the club’s next adventure! Robert On the Upshift of Things. . . It is interesting to see how classic car collecting has evolved over the years. Traditionally, when most people acquire a classic car, the most common decision they make is whether they are creating a driver, a concourse competitor, or maybe something in between. Today, there is increased interest in owning preservation vehicles, or survivor cars. With these examples, the car is found in original condition and nothing is done to restore the car. These cars are basically frozen in time, with every possible original part and accessory left as they were found. In some cases, the original paint is left untouched, with all blemishes and bodywork imperfections left as when the car was discovered. In 2010, race car driver Bruce Canepa located and obtained the last produced Cobra CSX model (See Pages 9-10). Canepa’s goal was not to restore the car, but to preserve it. However, since the car was so well maintained by it’s previous owners, it was in amazing condition. Using every original part, including seat leather, nuts, bolts, chrome, and paint, Canepa’s team simply had some cleaning up to do on the Cobra. In the end, Canepa had a preserved car that, in effect, appeared new. Steve ! 1 PONY EXPRESS APRIL 2013 CAR RUN TO CASA DE FRUTA On March 23rd, VMOA member Ville Karaila led a car run to Casa de Fruta, a popular traveler’s destination along California’s Pacheco Pass in Hollister. Although the group was small, we were all anxious to take advantage of a fun drive during one of the first sunny and warm days of spring. The group met on a Saturday at a the local McDonalds in Los Gatos for a pre-drive cup of coffee and driving instructions. Ville was the best of hosts, making sure that everyone who signed up for the drive in attending were present before we started off on out trip. Ville meets with drives to discuss the route before heading out to Casa de Fruta Ville explained that the trip would take us though the mountains of south San Jose and along the country roads that border the small towns of Morgan Hill and Gilroy. The trip would continue along Highway 156, a common route for those traveling between the Bay Area and the central valley. The ride would end at the famous fresh and dried fruit emporium, Casa de Fruta. Although the Casa was our final destination, Ville had a few stops along the way to make the trip extra special. Meandering though the green hills of south San Jose, our cars passed by a series or reservoirs that are used to store surplus drinking water for the valley. In all, the Santa Clara County has ten reservoirs that supply water for local residents. In addition, these watersheds also provide recreational sites for fishing and water sports like boating and jet skiing. ! 2 PONY EXPRESS APRIL 2013 Uvas (Spanish for grapes) Reservoir, the fist scenic stop on our drive Uvas dam and reservoir are located on Uvas Creek about two miles upstream from the intersection of Watsonville and Uvas roads in southern Santa Clara County. The Spanish name for grapes, "uvas," is preserved in a number of place names, all apparently referring to the abundance of wild grapes. Uvas Creek got its name from the land grant Cañada de las Uvas (grape ravine) dated June 14, 1842. Uvas Dam was a part of the South Santa Clara Valley Water Conservation District. It was completed in 1957. The reservoir's capacity is 9,835 acre-feet of water. The surface area is 288 acres. ! Our next stop was DeBrito candy shop along Pacheco Pass. DeBrito’s is located at the end of a small dirt road just off Pacheco Pass Road. Be careful, because if you are not looking, you just might pass the entrance. That would be a shame really, since De Brito is known throughout the valley for their small batch gourmet chocolate confections. The brainchild of Alene DeBrito, the factory began small, as a way to supply friends and family with chocolate dipped apricots and other candied delicacies during the holiday season. Soon the demand became so great that Alene and her husband, Arnold built the factory and store we see today. While DeBrito carries the gourmet chocolates you would find in most shops, their real claim to fame lies in their Outrageous Caramel Apples, a true culinary work of art. According toDeBrito employee Lisa, the shop candy makers begin cooking the caramel at five o’clock in the morning and spend approximately forty-five minutes making one batch of caramel, which can coat about 140 apples. On an average day, DeBrito’s produces 840 caramel and candied apples a day around 5,000 per week. ! Famous DeBrito candied apples. 6 PONY EXPRESS VMOA rides displayed outside Casa de Fruta APRIL 2013 Leaving DeBrito’s, we steered out Mustangs towards the final destination, Casa de Fruta, in Hollister, California. For over one hundred years, Casa de Fruta has been a regular stop for travelers driving between the Bay Area and the Central Valley. Once a small fruit stand offering customers local produce, Casa de Fruta now sports a restaurant, candy shop, fruit stand, and gift shop offering a wide variety of jams, wines, and nuts. Visitors may also stroll though a collection of antique farm equipment dating back to the end of the nineteenth century. For the lids, Casa offers a small scale train that takes passengers on a tour of the whole ranch. Others may choose to take a ride on Casa’s very own carousel. Arriving at Casa de Fruta, we settled into the ranch’s restaurant to enjoy a relaxing lunch and share thoughts about the ride from Los Gatos. After lunch, some members headed home, while others spent time grabbing an ice cream, checking out the antique exhibits, or buying a souvenir or two. At the end of the day participants would agree that it was a beautiful day for a car run. Thank you to Ville for providing us with a great afternoon adventure! Some are in private collections around the world, rarely if ever seen by the public. Others are in museums, giving us a glimpse into the past of automotive history. One Cobra, # CSX 3360, resides in the collection of race car driver and automobile innovator, Bruce Canepa. Housed in his museum in Scotts Valley, California, this car is on public display, perfectly restored, and the last of an amazing line of race cars. The last 427 Cobra built by A.C. Cars was invoiced to Shelby American on 12/14/66 at a total cost of £1,002 (1534.96 US). A 427 engine, fitted with a single 4V carburetor, was in stalled by Shelby American, and the car was invoiced on 10/26/67 to John Grappone Ford in Concord, NH. At Grappone’s request the car was air freighted to JFK Airport in New York, where John Grappone and Stan Halllianan picked it up. Their drive added toughly 270 miles to the car’s odometer. On 3/23/68 a twenty one year old Erland F. Russell of Newton, MA walked into John Grappone Ford and purchased Chassis # CSX 3360. “I needed every dollar I had plus money borrowed to buy the car.” Erland drove the car on the back roads of New Hampshire and mostly at night: “lots of driving was at 2 and 3 in the morning.” He vividly remembers driving nearly 170 MPH with a friend. In order to do this, he “removed the wing windows, survivors, electric fans, and floor mats.” Erland purchased a pair of Hush Puppie shoes because they were narrow enough that he could drive the car heel-n-toe. The Stats Initially registered with MA plates, the car was given the Engine: 427 cubic inch V8 NH tag “86324H” in January 1973 when Russell moved to Induction: Single 4V Carburetor Hillsboro, NH, Russel drove the car only during the Power: 410 horsepower summer, and in 1977 he sold the car for ten thousand Torque: 480 lb-ft dollars. Subsequently, the car was sold to Tom Gannett, and eventually Mark McClintock of Ohio. THe last owner was Anthony Tomasi who stored the car at Mike McCluskey’s in Southern California for more than a decade with only 6,000 original miles. Suspension: Independent Front and Rear Transmission: 4 Speed Brakes: 4 Wheel Disc Steering: Rack and Pinion Curb Weight: 2355 lbs 0 to 60 MPH: 4.2 seconds Top Speed: 165 MPH Bruce Canepa learned of the car though Cobra guru, Lynn Park, and finalized its purchase in August 2010. He immediately charged his Canepa team to completely restore the original, rust free ca, while focusing on reusing all of its original components, hardware, wiring, vinyl, and leather. Down to the smallest nut and bolt, the result is a 100% mechanical and cosmetic restoration. The car was presented at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours de Elegance and received a tremendous response. ! 9 PONY EXPRESS APRIL 2013 Detail of CSX 3360’s original interior CSX 3360’s original forty-seven year old paint still shines like new ! 10 PONY EXPRESS APRIL 2013 VMOA president, Robert Wilson suggested at a recent meeting that members should take a morning drive from San Jose to Santa Cruz for Sunday brunch on the wharf. The run began at Mike Howard’s Garage Doors in Campbell on Sunday, April 7th at 8:30 in the morning, Twelve members and seven cars were in attendance for the run. Heading south, the club took Highway 17, a winding but picturesque road that travels though the Santa Cruz mountains. Arriving in Santa Cruz,VMOA parked at the municipal wharf and had breakfast at Gilda’s restaurant. Following breakfast, members enjoyed the pleasant weather and socialized around the cars or strolled around the wharf. At about noon, the club headed back to San Jose, Thanks to Robert for suggesting this wonderful spur of the moment activity for the club! Gilda’s (upper left).
