“That’s Amazing!” Thirty years of Huell Howser

“Thirty years of Huell Howser and California’s Gold.” Huell donated
almost 8,000 videotape originals of more than 1000 episodes of his
various TV shows, his raw footage, production notes, still photos and
personal papers. He also bequeathed his impressive found-art
collection (collected on his travels around California), antique furniture,
memorabilia collection and his three homes. Inside the exhibit,
created with the collaboration of the Automobile Club of Southern
California, the walls, displaying photos and quotes, tell the story of
Howser’s life and career trajectory. Other parts of the exhibit
include a re-creation of his office, using his actual furniture, and a
display of memorabilia that he collected throughout his career. All
materials are housed within the “California Gold Archive within the
Chapman’s Leatherby Libraries. Lunch will be a Bubba Gumps with
free time in Old Town Orange. We will visit Watson’s Drug Store and
an Old Fashioned Soda Fountain for a treat. Includes admission, lunch,

Once again Bower Museum is presenting a special exhibit from China.
Before arriving at the museum we will lunch at our favorite buffet
“Café China”.
The Mystery of Sanxingdui will include objects from the discovery
termed “the ninth wonder of the world” by Chinese state-owned
television, CCTV and acknowledged by many scholars as one of the
greatest archaeological finds ever to be unearthed in China. During the
summer of 1986 construction workers accidentally uncovered an
astounding cache of more than 200 ancient jades, tools burned animal
bones, over 60 elephant tusks, monumental bronzes and a life-sized
statue of a nobleman at Sanxingdui, outside of the Sichuan Province
capital of Chengdu. The objects were dated to about 1300 BC, a time
when it was thought that the cradle of Chinese civilization was 1200
kilometers in the Northeast on the Yellow River in China’s central plain
region. The exhibits present over 120 of the most important
discoveries from both Sanxingdui and Jinsha and examine the great
mystery of where this 3500 year old culture could have come from and
where and why they abruptly vanished. Includes admission, docent

to Encinitas, the flower capital of San Diego County. We’ll spend
the morning at Weidner’s Gardens where the poinsettias line the
driveway & fill the greenhouses. A garden docent will join the group
for a demonstration & other information about growing poinsettias.

you can purchase fresh poinsettias to take home. After
Weidner’s, we’ll travel north to the Balboa Peninsula where you’ll be

stroll through the nursery to see the annual “Christmas Fantasy”
