March 2015 Draft - Sun City Country Club
“THE SCORE” Published by the Sun City Country Club 9433 N. 107th Avenue, Sun City, Arizona 85351 623-‐933-‐1353 (Pro Shop) 623-‐933-‐8401 (Office) 623-‐236-‐9857 (Restaurant/Lounge) March 2015 ________________________________________________________________________________________ From the General Manager… March arrives with much anticipation by all for better turf and fun-filled events. We have a very busy calendar and are excited to put on a good show for everyone this month. With a packed calendar and Bermuda grass in bloom, it is going to be a fun month for all. In February, we contracted a company to come in and help us get a handle on a few trees. My focus for them was around the clubhouse area, driving range and just across the street around #10 tee and #18 green. Creating curb appeal is important to me and I hope you like what you have seen done so far. We also tackled the large tree in front of #13 green so that it would make the hole more playable. Sun City Country Club is the home of many, many trees and bringing these trees back to an acceptable look comes with a high price tag. So over time, we will tackle a few trees at a time. For Sun City Country Club to continue to be successful, to cater to our local demographic, and for the health of the game as a whole, I feel it is important to demassify the game of golf and what the club offers. As a result, I am proud to announce the birth of the Ladies Putting League. This event will take place every Monday afternoon at 4:00 pm with Bob Blean, PGA Director of Instruction. It will include 5 to 10 minutes of putting instruction and a putting contest followed by some wine on the patio. It’s really meant to be a social event and a way for non-golfers to come out and compete with a putter and make new friends. This event is open to both members and non-members and we hope you choose to join us for some, wine, laughs, and a little fellowship with the ladies. As a reminder, please make sure you spend all of your credit book winnings by May 31, 2015. For your convenience, any winnings you earn in May will not be posted to your account until after May 31, 2015 so that you won’t have to rush and spend any last minute credit book winnings. If you are a person who uses Facebook, please take a moment to search for Sun City Country Club and “like” our page. When you do so, you will see that all of our weekly events and tournaments are posted there. Not only is Facebook a great way to reach out to our nonmember golfers, but it’s a great communication tool for us to deliver news and upcoming events to our members. If you see an event or a post that you enjoy on our Facebook page, please click the “share” button so that you can spread the word about our club. Our recent Valentine’s golf shop sale was very successful. Knowing that you need to use up your winnings by May 31, 2015, this is a good time to stop in and see what bargains we still have. We currently have a 50% off rack with some nice merchandise hanging on it. You always get 15% off all other merchandise as well (except for Ping clubs). If you don’t have any caps or shirts with our new logo on it, then it’s time to sport it! Lastly, if you have not had a moment to swing by and introduce yourself to Bob Blean, our new PGA Director of Instruction, I hope you can soon. On a personal level, I asked him to look at my swing and it would be an understatement to say that I am extremely excited about playing again. Bob knows his stuff and because of him, I can’t wait to tee it up again. If you are struggling or simply want to learn what you can do to take your game to the next level, Bob is your guy. Lastly, for those who are about to head back north to their summer homes, it’s been a pleasure to have you at the club this season. Upon your return, I know that you will be pleased with turf conditions and your playing experience next fall. We have some exciting plans for next season, “agronomically” speaking, and I look forward to delivering a stellar product to everyone next October. Thank you for your patience and participation this season. We will be better than ever very soon! Enjoy what is truly the best month for golf in the State of Arizona and as always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns. Jamey Lewis, PGA General Manager / Director of Golf [email protected] From the CEO… February has come and gone with good golf and memories made. Ray Madrid Golf Shop Manager Golf Course News… Warmer weather this month will promote rapid turf growth and increase mowing frequency. Sulfur and organic slow release fertilizer applied this winter has greatly improved the turf density on tees and fairways. This month we will begin our annual tree replacement program. We will plant twenty trees in place of dead trees we have removed. Pre-emergence herbicide has been applied to the course for control of Summer annual and perennial weeds. New distance markers have been installed on all the fairways. Mowing heights on greens, tee, and fairways will be reduced in preparation of spring and summer transition from cool season rye grass to Bermuda grass. Jim Trikoff Golf Course Superintendent th Our Golf Program in Schools will start March 9 at Peoria High School. If you have some extra clubs please drop them off at the pro shop. If you would like to help with this program or just want more information please stop in the office and let’s talk. Finally Rumor Central is very active. Chris Kennedy President Board of Governors… Among the duties of the Board of Governor’s we act as a liaison between members, management, the pro shop, and the club house. We’ve heard some rumors we’d like to address: There is NO sale pending and the Zendejases plan to keep the restaurant and bar opened for the summer months. The liquor license is held by the Board of Governors and it did expire however, this was through no fault of the restaurant or management. The expiration date was 1/31. The renewal was submitted 12/1. The Board of Liquor asked for supporting documentation three times between 12/1 and 1/31 which was promptly supplied. In February, we learned they were still unsatisfied with our submission. In mid February Tom Loegering and I personally visited the office of the Board of Liquor. After answering their questions it was discovered that the Board of Liquor was in error so they waived the late fee and issued us the license right there on the spot. All is good. Speaking of the liquor license, it has come to our attention that empty liquor bottles and beer cans of a brand not sold at the bar have been found on the premises. Just so we all know it is a violation of liquor laws to bring outside liquor to the bar. On Friday, March 13 , the Board of Governors, the Club House and the Pro Shop are having a Club House Beautification Golf Tournament. This date is a regular couples club Friday however it will be 18-holes of golf starting at 1:00 instead of 9-holes starting at 3:00. The format is yet to be determined but it will be fun and easy for those who prefer 9-holes. There will be mulligans for sale and a 50/50. You’ll be able to buy string by the foot to use for putts and other fun ruses to help you win the tournament. The Full House Band will be playing on the patio and Jack and Nanette will supply a Mexican buffet @ $7 a head with all proceeds going to the benefit. This is a real collaboration between all three facets. All we need now are the members. Proceeds from the event will go to fixing the fans in the restrooms at the club house. Granted, the issue is deeper than the fans but it will help until the real problem can be fixed. All it takes th is money. Please join us on March 13 for a fun event to help solve a problem that has bothered us all for years with no solution in sight. We are the solution and we can take pride in knowing that we pulled “together” to solve it. Thank you so much. Let’s just do it!!!
