We have contributed over $5.7million to music education since 1996. Over the course of JAS’ history we have had many successes but have also addressed many challenges, none of which compared to the headwinds met during the depth of the recent financial crisis. JAS’ survival was dependent on us redefining ourselves, and updating how we approached the fulfillment of our mission. The JAS Executive Committee, under the guidance of the De Vos Institute of Arts Management at the Kennedy Center, undertook the development of an extensive strategic plan that was completed and implemented in 2012. As a result, we emerged with a fresh image of ourselves and a laser focus on our MISSION. We made internal organizational changes; secured a new strategic partnership with Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) to assist in the programming and production of our Labor Day festival; and refined our annual operating budgets. As a result, we allocated a greater part of our financial resources to improving the quality of our Festival programming and towards funding our year round Jazz programming at our JAS Café at the Little Nell to a full winter and summer series. Our 2012 initiatives yielded outstanding results fiscally, artistically and educationally. We realized a $400,000+ operating surplus for the year with 29,200 people enjoying our Music Festivals, 4,000+ people attending our JAS Café performances and 1,065 music students benefitting from our JAS In-Schools music education programs. Our accomplishments would not have been possible without the support and guidance from our Board of Directors and dedicated staff. It has been an honor for me to serve as Chair and work with each of them. We commend and thank our individual and corporate donors for the investment that they have made in our mission and our community. The trust that they placed in our organization enabled us to realign ourselves and continue to achieve and grow our music performance and education MISSION objectives. We are excited about the many initiatives underway for the coming years. We look forward to introducing our audiences to the world’s greatest musical artists and providing educational programs that nurture tomorrow’s audiences and offer students the opportunity to discover and develop their musical talents. Marianne Elmasri Buchholz Chairman 2 0 1 2 an n u al re p ort »5« In 2012 JAS presented its most widely heard and critically acclaimed series of festival performances since 2008, when change brought on the economic downturn. JAS took its most aggressive steps since its inception to embrace its jazz roots in a permanent and sustainable way with a twice monthly series of winter and summer shows, re-branded as the “JAS Café Downstairs @ the Nell”. We all feel a sense of balance about JAS’ programming which had eluded us for years, as our June & Labor Day festivals with their large crowds and hugely popular stars are contrasted with the magic of world-class music in an intimate setting at the JAS Café. After years of nomadic presentations at diverse venues such as the old Silvertree Hotel Cabaret Room, the Ballroom of the Hotel Jerome, Belly Up, Harris Hall & The Wheeler Opera House, the expansion of the JAS Café to a year–round presenting status was nothing short of a sea change for the organization. The JAS Café quickly caught on with old friends of JAS, and earned us many new ones. Most importantly it has helped JAS to finally, and perhaps permanently, ensure that JAS has a sustainable venue in which to present jazz and related jazz influenced music to thousands of attendees throughout its annual season. This new home for jazz at the JAS Café has hosted magnificent vocalists and brilliant instrumentalists and brought an international musical element to our sophisticated town. Musicians from Cuba, Brazil, France, Italy and more brought unmistakably personal styles fusing America’s classical music, jazz, with their own musical traditions. Attentive and appreciative audiences continue to fill the JAS Café, which a noted local writer referred to as an “oasis of cosmopolitan cool.” At the JAS June Festival, where JAS was born in 1991, we made enormous strides, establishing a new Lawn Party where preconcert revelers could enjoy great sounds and artisan food, expanding the Benedict Tent into the hub of a festival. In 2012 the symmetry of being at the Benedict Tent, our birthplace, and settling into what feels like a permanent home for jazz at the JAS Café gave JAS an aha moment long overdue. At its annual season closing Labor Day weekend festival, JAS continued the second year of its most important new structural relationship in years with AEG. Programming the festival in collaboration with AEG, the concert industry giant who dominates concert bookings at Red Rocks in Denver, is an important factor in determining which major artists will play for JAS and when. We continued to make important strides in the regional marketplace of major concert talent, with Grammy winning emerging artists like Mumford & Sons headlining, further cementing JAS’ reputation as a festival venue for the newest stars, as well as iconic veterans. (Ed Note: Mumford & Sons’ recording Babel won the Grammy for “Album of the Year in 2012, and went #1 world-wide). In addition to our programming success JAS In-Schools music education programs further solidified and strengthened in 2012. Highlights include the addition of the new JAS Student Teacher Assistant Program which gives Music Directors more time to focus and provide one on one attention to students, as well as the integration of the Berklee City Music PULSE program an integral teaching resource which JAS has made available to our teachers and students for year-round use. Jazz Aspen Snowmass, at 22 years, is knocking on the door of real institutional status in Aspen/Snowmass, having weathered the storm of the economic downturn and emerged a more vital, sustainable, balanced and exciting presenting and educating organization. In 2012 JAS put great effort into a crucial updating of its Strategic Plan, and launching plans for our 25th Anniversary in 2015. We’ve set very high standards for ourselves: our best season ever, chocked full of great artists and new discoveries, and new thematic programming and initiatives which collectively will help ensure that JAS remains a vital and beloved member of the Roaring Fork Valley’s community of extraordinary Not for Profit Art organizations for years to come. On behalf of all of us here at JAS, our Board of Directors, our dedicated staff and volunteers, we want to thank each and every one of you who purchased a ticket, made a donation, sang along or laughed, danced or was moved to tears by someone you heard at a JAS event, THANK YOU FOR HELPING US KEEP THE MUSIC PLAYING! »6« ja z z a s p e n s nowma s s Best regards, Jim Horowitz Founder, President & CEO 2012 NATIONAL COUNCIL Gerhard & Jeanne Andlinger Chris & Paula Bank Geoff Barker Archer & Sandie Bishop Scott & Ella Brittingham Libby & Tim Brown Don & Marianne Buchholz Tony & Terri Caine Dennis Carey Caribou Club - Billy Stoltz & Richard Edwards Greg & Rhonda Casillas David Chazen Thomas J. & Linda Coates Michael Connolly Rick Crandall & Pamela Levy Steve & Nancy Crown Susan Crown & William Kunkler Laurie Crown & Rick Ortega Charles & Angela Cunniffe Lawrence F. (As of March 2013 attendance and earned revenues had doubled from the same point in the 2011/2012 season). The JAS Café has quickly become JAS’ most important Programming Initiative in years, enabling the organization to educate thousands of attendees annually about the wide influences of America’s classical music, jazz. JAS has quickly morphed into a year-round cultural presence while affirming its core Mission of broadening the appreciation of and audience for » 16 « ja z z a s p e n s nowma s s jazz. After 22 years of nomadically presenting jazz in the Roaring Fork Valley in locations as diverse as the Silvertree Hotel Cabaret Room, the Hotel Jerome Ballroom, The Wheeler, Harris Hall and L’Hostaria Ristorante, JAS has finally found a seemingly permanent home for world-class jazz on a year-round basis, that should only grow in audience and popularity with time. The series is called “Jazz Spoken Globally” as JAS has presented a majority of these concerts highlighting artists from around the world who create uniquely cross-cultural blends of their indigenous music through the language of jazz improvisation. Artists from countries including Brazil, France, Italy, Cuba and Jamaica have been seen side by side with American musicians. The international imprint of the JAS Café seems ideally suited to a community which boasts a disproportionately large number of international visitors and, whose perspective as a modern community has been heavily influenced by the stream of year-round visitors to its globally minded institutions like the Aspen Institute, Aspen Music Festival & School, Aspen Physics Institute, Aspen Art Museum and Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. The JAS Café is increasingly fielding inquiries from major agents and artists who have heard very positive feedback about the concerts and audiences, and are seeking performance opportunitites at the venue, a solid indication of the program’s growing national reputation. JAS anticipates that the JAS Café will play an increasingly important role in the future as a bridge to other important not for profit organizations and their constituencies, whom JAS believes will increasingly become Café attendees, opening the door to future productive collaborations between JAS and Aspen’s other leading not for profit organizations. 2012 JAS Café Performances Jan. 13-14: Jan. 27-28: Feb. 10-11: Feb. 24-25: Mar. 9-10: Mar. 30-31: June 29: June 30: July 5: July 6-7: July 27: Aug. 10-11: Dec. 14-15: Dec. 27-28: Cyrille Aimee & Diego Figueroa Tuck & Patti Curtis Stigers Jon Cleary Trio Jackie Ryan Chuchito Valdes Cyrille Aimee & Diego Figueiredo Hot Club of Detroit Wil Campa y su Gran Union Lucien Barbarin “New Orleans Rhythm Revue” Christian McBride Raul Midon and Russell Malone Tierney Sutton Allan Harris 2 0 1 2 an n u al re p ort » 17 « SPECIAL EVENTS The Band - February 2 In 2012 JAS created The Band, a membership to encourage philanthropy and social membership from young community members.
