THE 10k TIMES - Silson Joggers
THE 10k TIMES April 2016 TIME TO HIT THE ROADS As a fair weather runner it's always nice to welcome the start of the road racing season. There are plenty of events for you to get involved in and Heather has written a piece about the NRRL and the EMGP. Happy running! Paul Holmes 33rd Sil verst one Grand Prix 10k Race Wednesday 4t h May 2016 (Under UKA rules, Licence No 2016 - 19030) Vol unt eers Pl ease The 10K is the highlight of the Club events calendar and financially its success is essential so that we can fund Club activities for the coming year. The UKA requirements for race organisation are greater than ever before and we will be monitored by a UK Athletics scrutineer In order to make the event a continuing success, we will need at least 70 volunteers (almost the whole club) to help out on the evening of 4th May so we ask that members don?t enter the race but volunteer to help instead. The main tasks are Car Parking, Registration, Timing Chip Distribution and Collection, Circuit and Pit Lane Marshalling, Refreshments and of course Clearing Up afterwards. We have access to the circuit from 5.00pm, but the main help is needed from 6.00pm. School Years 9 and over train with seniors until the end of Summer Term. In September, children will be in new school year groups. Tuesday nights=Years 3-6, Wednesday night junior group = Years 7-9, Wednesday night older junior group training with adults = Years 9+ Juniors are expected to come to every training session unless it is their birthday or they are injured. We now have a waiting list in place for all age groups and we hate having to turn away enthusiastic runners. For safety reasons we limit numbers at training sessions as we often run in the dark. There is nothing more frustrating for coaches than running sessions when juniors didn?t attend because they simply didn?t fancy running that night. Junior Diary - April 2016 Urgent need of parent volunteers for upcoming sessions. Yes, voluntarily running a horrendously long (12k? ..madness!) cross country race I?m guaranteed to get a good kicking at. In Birmingham. Clearly I?m a glutton for punishment on many levels. Anyhoo, trundling up the motorway the morning fog lifted, the temperature rose and a funny yellow thing appeared in the sky. Having navigated to Longridge and successfully parked I pushed against the flow of junior athletes already done for the day and located first Cofton Park and then the Northamptonshire basecamp for the day. With my shiny new Northants vest on I went to dodge the hordes of spectators whilst pretending to warm up and have a recce. This was actually just an excuse to start this year?s tan. I found a slightly different course from the one I last ran on two years ago and Cofton Park seemed to have gained some new hills. Soon enough start time came around and I gathered with my team mates for the day to negotiate the theme park-like barriers to the starting pens. Since I didn?t indulge in any over-priced fast food after the race, this was the last time the day bore any resemblance to being at a theme park. A fast and frantic grassy downhill start led to a muddy bottleneck and a bit of elbow bumping. There was then the first of two long grassy climbs - the first looping round on itself to come straight back down via a lightening quick descent. The second ascent was slightly longer with a steep and muddy descent that required a bit of commitment and trust in the spikes. Earlier in the day someone had somehow needed to be extracted from this section by ambulance. From the bottom the remaining third of the course was as I remembered it from last time ? deep muddy sections then a fast grassy loop around some fields before a slight rise leading to the spectator-packed finishing straight. Laps two and three also featured a slight climb away from the finish line for good measure. The senior men were treated to three laps, which with the hills and the mud felt like a great opportunity for blowing up spectacularly. Despite starting a little too fast and attacking the first climb as hard as I dared I soon found myself going backwards, the tight twists of the course giving a good view of both the front and back of the field. Completing lap two without being lapped felt like an accomplishment. For a change I seemed to feel better as the race went on so I pushed as hard as I could for the last lap and even managed something resembling a sprint finish. In the end I was 203rd out of 261 finishers and third scorer from the Northants team of 7, a slight improvement on my 234th out of 276 in 2014. Well done to Katy for battling through a cold to claim her own county vest earlier in the day. Here endeth the season. After all the mud of the winter and cross country, it's now the time for our attention to turn to the road racing season! For Silson, the main focus over the coming few months is to have plenty of representation at all the races of the East Midlands Grand Prix series (EMGP), which also incorporates some the Northants Road Racing League events (NRRL). The EMGP series starts with the Silverstone 10km in May (Club members are expected to help by volunteering at this event-details to follow from our volunteer co-ordinator) and continues with mid-week races over 5/ 6 mile, or 10km distance for 8 events. Individual runners for Silson have done well over the years but it really is all due to team support-similarly to Cross country having your team mates there running alongside and cheering for you really helps! There is also a huge sense of personal pride at having completed a series of races! The NRRL is the team event for Northants Clubs which picks a selection of races, covering distances from 5km to half-marathon, taking place during the year. Previously Silson have won team titles in the competition, and individual placings too, but this can only be repeated with a coordinated team effort!! The first NRRL race is the Corby 5km on April 17th. Details can be found on the link below http:/ / www.northantsnet2012series.org.uk/ Please consider entering these events and helping support the club to really show off the results of all the exceptional training undertaken, the hard work and support from the coaches and volunteers is all worth it!! If this was a marathon we would be getting to the 20 mile mark, when the going starts to get really tough. So Heather is still at the top of the table this month, but with a much reduced lead as Marie?s Dirty Dirty Leeds, sorry, Mighty Leeds, have had a stellar month in March outscoring everyone, and closing the gap on Heather by 40 points, so this one is definitely going to go all the way to the wire. Also having a tremendous month is last season?s champion Jim, who scored the second highest total and moved up the table 4 places to 12 th. Michael still leads the Spencer collective, but has slipped one place to third, mainly because of Marie?s charge. After Leicester?s fabulous fairy-tale march to the summit, Andy is now following in their footsteps and has moved up 4 places to 4 th. Could it yet be a Kirk 1-2, and who will be number one??? Tom is another who has had a good month moving up to 5 th position just behind Andy. Top Junior by just 4 points is Joseph, with Alfie hot on his heels. At the wrong end of the table David is still there as he has been most of the season, but the gap is definitely closing on Ben, so he might just yet avoid the dreaded wooden spoon. Keep on making those transfers and substitutions and who knows where your team might end up.
