LONDON MARATHON RACE REPORTS
What an amazing, crazy, fabulous, surreal experience the London Marathon is!
Arriving at Greenwich, after a challenging training plan, is a magical moment. There was an
air of subdued calm around the start. Much queuing for the toilets and applications of Deep
Heat. I didn't see or hear the start way back in start pen 9 but Tim Peake, astronaut, got us
underway promptly at 10.
Having run the majority of my training solo it was a novel experience running in a pack of
over 39k people, including dinosaurs, rhinos and Jesus. The support was magnificent, all
along the roadside were people cheering; pubs had speaker systems out of windows; bands
played; the noise was almost claustrophobic at times but also gave much needed
encouragement.
My support team, Michael James and Joseph, were very mobile watching from miles 9, 14, 20
and finish, waving a Silson vest flag so I didn't miss them. Thank you
I also saw the Silson Supporters Group at mile 16 and was plied with jelly babies, a welcome
change to gels.
Quads started complaining around mile 21, but I chose to ignore them, same as I was ignoring
the pain in my knee. But my ankle, which held up training quite dramatically for two weeks
way back in January, kept very quiet.
It had taken me 12 minutes to cross the start line so when I saw/ heard Big Ben strike 3 o'clock
I knew I had to focus and push for The Mall if I wanted to finish sub 5 hours. All the training
really paid off as I pushed down Birdcage Walk and round into the finish straight. I did my
best impression of a sprint finish and crossed the line in 4:58:55.
Having been given my medal and had my photo taken I was scooped up by a lovely St John's
Ambulance man for a quick check up. The first aid tent was extremely well organised, like the
rest of the day, people, marshals and support team were fab.
Big question - would I do it again? I don't have unfinished business with the marathon as I was
happy with my time and performance, and training and running for a (sub) 5 hour finish is
hard. My body has had to cope with a lot. But, maybe!
The whole experience is taking a long time to come down from.
Enter the ballot - you might get as lucky as me.

LONDON MARATHON RACE REPORTS
Tit l e: 3 Hours, 47 Seconds and a Pee
I achieved one of my running ambitions last Sunday by running the London marathon. In
previous marathons I've hit the 'wall' and suffered cramp and to try and avoid these problems
this time I drank a bottle of water and some lucozade in the hour prior to the race. In the park
beforehand I was looking out for Silson Joggers, but the only person I spotted was Sue when I
was penned in the start zone. My memories of the actual race included:
-
-
Running close to a runner dressed as Braveheart for a mile or so and listening to him
amuse the crowds by regularly shouting out 'freedom'.
A water bottle top getting stuck in my shoe in mile 2 and remaining there throughout
the race.
Waving to the Silson supporters as they cheered me as I ran past.
Needing to stop and find a portaloo at mile 4 due to the pre-race drinking.
The amazing support and noise from the spectators.
Not hitting the wall or suffering from cramp.
Being deceived by my GPS that gave me a finishing time of 2.58:18. I think the problem
must have arose when we ran through a tunnel and it lost its signal. It gave me a time of
5 mins 10 seconds for that mile!
At times the need to concentrate to find road space to run due to the vast number of
runners. According to my 'dodgy' GPS I ran 26.41 miles
Running a PB time by taking 10 minutes of my previous best.
After the race I was extremely impressed by the logistics of the event as I maanged to get my
kit bag back instantly, despite the lorries carrying the baggage of 39,000 runners. The drama
continued for me in the train on the journey back to Bletchley. I went to the loo again and
when I came out I discovered that I missed my stop. Fortunately I was able to get off at Milton
Keynes before waiting to get another train back to Bletchley. Overall it was a great running
event that surpassed my expectations and if your lucky enough to get offered a place next
year you've got an invite to a special running occasion.

LONDON MARATHON RACE REPORTS
Publ ic urinat ion and f eel ing rough t he next day? Eit her a st andard
night out on t he t own or a t rip t o t he London Marat hon? .
So after a debut of 2:59 in my only other marathon I merrily skipped off at 2:50 pace and all
was well with the world until about 18 miles. At this point my left calf and right quad decided
they weren?t happy, which did at least mean the pain was fairly symmetric, but I had to slow
my pace to avoid a complete pull of either muscle. The last eight miles then became a game
of managing the legs whilst pushing whenever possible. There was no way that this could
possibly be considered to be a fun game.
Best bit was probably running over Tower Bridge in the knowledge that halfway was
approaching and with the psychological boost of actually being on the same side of the river
as the finish. Worst bit was the long stretch along the embankment with Big Ben never
seeming to get any closer.
Learning points? Probably not enough mileage in training, for which I completely blame this
nonsense of having to work for a living and would appreciate someone writing me a note for
next time.
Huge thanks to Richard for collecting my number and race pack for me and saving me a
logistical nightmare and Simon for his expertise on transport to and from. Thanks to all the
supporters that I completely failed to see!

FANTASY FOOTBALL
SuperMarie Leeds t he Tabl e; Heat her Foxed;
Tough at t he Bot t om!
The league tables were in the process of being
updated when I wrote this, but there is no
doubt that we have a new Championship
leader. Marie has had a spectacular month
scoring 375 points which is quite amazing, and
deposing Heather from her long held top spot.
I can see Cellino the Leeds Chairman getting in
touch to see if Marie is available to be their new
manager, as after all he hasn?t changed the
manager for a couple of weeks now! Heather
will be hoping her slip down the table is not a
portent of Leicester not winning the title
(unlikely I know, but at the time of writing
they?ve still not made it across the line).
Michael has hung on to his third place, and in
fact is now only 8 points behind Heather in
second. Tom has moved up to fourth after a
great month scoring 325 points. Andy, myself
and Jim are all close behind as we come into
the last few games of the season. The battle
for the honour of top Junior will also go right to
the wire with James just one point ahead of
Alfie. Meanwhile David & Ben are fighting out
for the honour of doing a ?Villa? and being the
worst team in the league ? David has held that
dubious distinction for a long time now but has
closed the gap on Ben and is only three points
behind, so the great escape might yet happen.
Meanwhile in the real world it?s huge
congratulations to the Cobblers for winning the
Division 2 Championship (that looked pretty
unlikely earlier in the season with all the
financial and stadium issues), and potentially
congratulations to 5,000 to 1 outsiders
Leicester for winning the Premier League. For
us Boro, Derby, and Hull fans the agony
continues, whether we are hoping for
automatic promotion or play-off glory ? I
know which I would prefer! And elsewhere
in the North-East one of, or possibly both,
Newcastle and Sunderland will be leaving
the Premier League, hopefully to be
replaced by the Boro!
Keep on playing to the end of the season ?
we are all on the Mall now sprinting or
limping to the finish line.
David
