What is hereditary hair loss?
Hair is a part of our personality. It shows who we are and how we look.
That’s why it is also important that we are happy with our hair – regardless
of whether it is long or short, dark or blond.
Hereditary hair loss and thinning of the hair are common. Many consider
it a nightmare to lose their hair and become thin-haired. Self image suffers
and one begins to feel less attractive. Even your mood can be affected. This
goes for both women and men alike.
Many people do not realize that there is help you can get for this problem,
but there is. That’s why we’ve made this brochure. It’s about hair – and how
you can keep it.
Hereditary hair loss is not just about losing hair. Rather, it’s a slow process
in which your hair thins out over time.
Androgen alopeci, which is the Latin name for hereditary hair loss, is
caused by heredity, age, and hormones. In 95 percent of all cases, hair loss
is hereditary. You can inherit predisposition for hair loss from both parents.
Hereditary hair loss is most common in men but it also affects women.
About 280,000 women and 480,000 men in Sweden experience hereditary
hair loss.

Hereditary hair loss in men
Hereditary hair loss in men is seen in the form of
recessions at the temples and/or a patch in the
center part of the top of the head where the hair
thins out, while the sides most often remain. Thin
hair in men almost always begins with a hairline that moves slowly upward.
Afterwards the hairline becomes higher while the bare patch on top of the
head becomes larger and larger at the same time. Finally the two bare parts
meet. Many men begin losing their hair as early as in their twenties.
Thinning of the hair in women
For women, hereditary hair loss is a more
concealed problem. It begins later in life
and develops more slowly. For this reason
it is harder to notice.
Women do not get bare spots on their heads the way men do, but their
hair becomes gradually thinner. The thinning out of women’s hair happens
most commonly in the form of an oval on the front part of the top of the head.

Hair loss is clearly visible in men, and many become more or less bald-headed
over time. Women, on the other hand, can get help from their hair stylists
to conceal the problem. A talented hair stylist can use different methods to
give your hair more volume. New hair styles, as well as shampoo and styling
products, do not, however, solve the real problem: that you’re losing hair.
Today, effective treatment is available for the problem. Rogaine has a

Rogaine consists of a solution which stimulates hair growth in the areas
where treatment is desired. Rogaine contains the active ingredient minoxidil,
which penetrates the scalp and affects weak hair follicles so that they can
regain their strength and produce new strands of hair.
Rogaine delivers the best results if the area treated is less than 10 centimeters in diameter and if hair loss or thinning of the hair has been progressing for less than 10 years. That is why it is best to begin treatment as soon as
possible after hair loss has begun.
