In the last quarter of 2009, we opened our Providence Point campus with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception celebrating the occasion on September 12, 2009. More than 300 residents, contractors, vendors, neighbors and community leaders enjoyed an opportunity to meet their neighbors and an evening of music and delicious dining. Todd F. Swortzel, President & CEO Planning for events surrounding the 100th anniversary unfolded in earnest as the new year began. To kick off the year of celebration, a birthday open house was held on the Mt. Lebanon campus on Friday, March 26th. The Activity Room of Baptist Homes was transformed by festive decorations, balloons and birthday cake for more than 300 guests. The celebration continues at Providence Point on Saturday, September 18th with the 100th Anniversary Gala event to benefit the Samaritan Fund for Resident Assistance. It will feature the President’s reception, and dinner and dancing under the stars. Invitations have been mailed and we hope that you will join us to mark this historic milestone. The Providence Point Opening September 2009 w w w. b a p t i s t h o m e s . o r g In 2010, the Foundation has sponsored a number of charitable efforts that are uniting the residents, staff and Board members, and enabling the Foundation to respond to urgent community needs. As a sign of support for those devastated by the earthquake in Haiti, the Foundation made a donation on behalf of the Baptist Homes family to the American Red Cross. A team representing Baptist Homes was out early on Mother’s Day, Sunday, Residents, staff and family celebrated the 100th anniversary of Baptist Homes Society with a slice of birthday cake. Planning is well under way for the Gala at Providence Point on Saturday, September 18th. Proceeds from this event will help us to reach our $1,000,000 goal in honor of our 100th year. continued on page 2 489 Castle Shannon Boulevard ❘ Pittsburgh, PA 15234-1482 ❘ 412-563-6550 continued from page 1 May 9th, to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure (see accompanying article). And later this year, as in years past, Baptist Homes volunteers will walk in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk on Oct. 2nd at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium. In honor of our anniversary, we have set a goal to raise $1,000,000 this year to support the mission and ministry of Baptist Homes. Whether you donate to our year-end appeal for the Samaritan Fund for Resident Assistance, through the employee campaign, to our Golf Invitational or the Gala -- you are helping us to meet our goal. Providing benevolent care for residents in financial need is the cornerstone of our 100-year ministry. We cannot thank you enough for your support, and look forward to our next century of providing compassionate care to seniors. BAPTIST HOMES SOCIETY AND FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS David E. Along the Journey ❘ SUMMER 2010 5 Samaritan Fund for Resident Assistance: Fulfilling our Mission at Baptist Homes Society For 100 years Baptist Homes Society has been committed to providing benevolent care for residents in financial need through the Samaritan Fund for Resident Assistance. Our charitable care is funded through donations to the fund from individuals like you, churches, organizations, the proceeds of our annual Charity Golf Outing, and the investment income generated by bequests and other endowment gifts to the Baptist Homes Foundation. In 2009, Baptist Homes Society was able to provide over $1.4 million in charitable care to seniors of all faiths who are no longer able to cover their cost of health care. Not many places today are willing to serve these people, but extending assistance is the cornerstone of our 100-year ministry. The Mt. Lebanon campus currently serves over 300 adults of all faiths through assisted living residences, skilled nursing and 100 HUD subsidized apartments. With the opening of Providence Point in Scott Township in Spring of 2009, Baptist Homes Society has increased the number of individuals and families that we will serve nearly threefold. As part of our value statements, Baptist Homes Society is committed to providing an environment that encourages and supports the components of wellness, physical, emotional, spiritual, social, intellectual and community. We continuously strive to improve the quality of life of our residents. We have been able to gradually update the Mt. Lebanon campus over the last few years—adding a state of the art Wellness Center to encourage physical activity. Through the generosity of the B.K. Simon Family Charitable Foundation we were able to add a beautiful sunroom to give residents a room to enjoy the sunshine and outdoors year round. Through the generosity of the George H. Campbell, Lillian S. Campbell and Mary S. Campbell Foundation, we were able to replace furniture in our nursing center. As we continue in our mission to provide charitable care, opportunities abound for further improvement of our Mt. Lebanon campus and for expansion of activities and programs for our residents. All contributions large or small are greatly appreciated and will be put to good use to benefit all of our residents. On May 17th, we hosted our 17th Annual Baptist Homes Charity Golf Invitational at the Pittsburgh Field Club. Over 100 golfers participated along with over 45 sponsors. (Please see pages 6 and 7.) We were able to raise over $85,000 for which we are most grateful in these trying economic times. All proceeds from our Invitational benefit the Samaritan Fund for Resident Assistance. As we celebrate our 100th year anniversary, please continue to support our mission to provide benevolence and improve the quality of life of our residents. We and our residents thank you for your consideration and your loyal support. 6 www.bapt isthomes.org Baptist Homes in the Community On a chilly Sunday morning in May, a team of Baptist Homes Society employees, friends and family met in Schenley Park to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Some ambitious members ran the 5k, but most of the team enjoyed a leisurely walk with 35,000 other survivors and supporters. Recently, the Board of the Baptist Homes Foundation voted to support a variety of charitable efforts throughout the community as determined on an annual basis. In addition to the Race for the Cure, a donation on behalf of residents and staff was made to the American Red Cross to support relief efforts in Haiti. And this fall, a team will participate in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk that will take place at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 2 at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium. For more information about joining the Baptist Homes team please contact Carolyn Falk at 412.572.8302 or [email protected]. Team members at the Race for the Cure, Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 9, 2010. Survivor Pat McMullen (2nd on left) has participated in 17 of the 18 walks. Pat works in dining services at Providence Point. MISSION STATEMENT Building on our 100-year tradition of excellence, we offer a full continuum of enriched living, compassionate care, and benevolence to a broad spectrum of individuals. We promote a lifestyle of growth, creativity, and independence, while respecting the dignity and self-determination of those living and working in our Christian communities.
