dress responsibly - Fashion Fights Poverty
dressresponsibly.
The Dress Responsibly Look Book is the official style guide of
Fashion Fights Poverty, 2006. Lovingly hand-bound by a team
of volunteers, each book is one-of-a-kind and made from
100% recycled paper. Variations will occur and are intended.
Believing that at the center of FFP beats the stylish and sociallyresponsible consumer, the FFP team extends this modest but
sincere attempt to provide an eye-catching resource for those
interested in supporting community development through
ethical fashion. And in that spirit, FFP will donate all proceeds
of the sale of this book to BeadforLife, a poverty-eradication
project in Uganda and the FFP 2006 beneficiary.
Within the following pages are a global swatch of clothes,
accessories and home décor from designers who promote
responsible principles such as environmental sustainability,
equitable employment and fair trade; and non-profit, nongovernmental organizations which use fashion and design to
promote self-empowered micro-entrepreneurial projects as
vehicles for poverty eradication. The resulting accoutrement of
these endeavors, as you will see throughout the book, range
from sexy and chic to classic and cosmopolitan.
In the spirit of giving and creativity from which FFP was birthed,
we are proud to announce that all services by photographers,
models, stylists, designers and organizations were provided pro
bono in the production of this book. Talented artists from Bogotá,
Los Angeles, New York and Washington, DC contributed an
exhaustive number of hours of research and production to
develop visual masterpieces featuring a remarkably diverse
array of citizens: students and professionals, models and
entertainers, public officials and business leaders.
To all of those who donated their time, talent and energy, the
FFP team extends its most heartfelt gratitude. And to those
reading this simple introduction, we extend an invitation to
Fashion Fights Poverty on October 27, 2006 at the Carnegie
Library on 801 K Street, NW in Washington, DC.
Thank you for choosing to dress responsibly,
The Fashion Fights Poverty team

A Fashion Designer born in Medellín, Colombia. Fulfilling a childhood
dream, she graduated from “Les Ecoles De Chambre Syndicale De La
Haute Couture Parisienne” en 1993. During that four year period in
Paris, she trained at the workspaces of Christian Dior and Christian
Lacroix. There she was in the presence of the true magic of Haute
Couture.
In 1993, she won first prize in the “Dentelle de Calais” competition
and has continued to participate in shows throughout Latin America,
including Colombiamoda and Colombiatex in Colombia; the
“Intermoda Show 2002” in Guadalalara, Mexico; “Colombiamoda
in Ecuador 2002”, Quito, Ecuador; Fashion Week Mexico, 2003;
and in 2004, she went to “Milano Moda Donna” in Milan, Italy with
the project “Indentidad Colombia”.

Jump Suit by Maria Luisa Ortiz
In 1996, she started her career in Colombia in a small “Atelier”
dedicated to making Haute Couture bridal and formal gowns for
a select clientele who appreciated her meticulous work and her
sophisticated and feminine style. She later opened a boutique in 1999
and expanded her collection to one of “prêt a porter de luxe”. There,
she specialized in dressing her clientele with an international style in
a manner that was very elegant and sophisticated, for those special
occasions where it is most important to know how to emphasize the
best features for each individual woman. Since then, her collections
have been published in major fashion magazines throughout Latin
America.
Maria Luisa Ortiz has several projects coming up in the near future.
One of which is to fulfill her dream of “Identidad Colombia” and to
export artisan manufactured products of her design. In 2003, Maria
was part of a team of designers dedicated to the use of artesanal
works coming from different regions of Colombia in their collections,
thereby giving life to new artesanal fashions. Among the works
featured included clothes made of Guambianos textiles, from the
Wayúu community, the linen and cotton of the indigenous community
Arhuaca, and other manual arts.

For the fashion forward and style savvy, it’s not always easy being
green. But the couture-inspired creations of Deborah Lindquist are
changing all that. As one of LA’s most sought after environmentallyconscious designers, Deborah creates exquisite apparel out of a mix
of “reincarnated” and new Earth-friendly fabrics.
She has dressed trendsetters such as Sharon Stone, Gwen Stefani,
Keyshia Cole, Demi Moore, Hilary Duff, Jessica Simpson, Paris
Hilton, and Charlize Theron. Her designs have graced the runways
of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios and the
screens of primetime television. But for Deborah, it’s a passion for
the planet and the natural beauty of her West Coast surroundings
that inspire her.
Launched in 2004, Deborah’s eco-conscious clothing line combines
environmental responsibility with a cutting-edge aesthetic. Deborah
works her fashion magic with a mixture of environmentally-friendly
fabrications, including recycled cashmere, repurposed kimonos
and saris, vintage silk scarves, and sustainable materials such as
hemp, organic cotton, and organic wool. The resulting designs are
as striking as they are ecologically sensitive. As a trailblazer at the
forefront of the stylish green clothing movement, Deborah is making
an impact in the fashion world while remaining true to her love for
the environment.

the entire process is time-efficient, and we can respond faster to market
demand.

WORLDSTOCK (WWW.WORLDSTOCK.COM) - Artisans around the
world have trouble reaching their natural markets due to poverty, poor
information, and the disadvantage of being small-lot producers in an
age of high technology and mass distribution. Yet they are capable of

know how to make. We realized that Overstock could bridge this global
gap. The result is Worldstock, a store emphasizing sustainability, fairness,
and transparency while empowering artisans to achieve their dreams for
themselves and their families.
